[Q] audio lag (non video player related) - Nook Color General

My NC was upgraded to 1.0 and rooted with Auto-Nooter 2.12.25.
I have no issues with audio lag when playing properly converted movie files in Rock Player (using hardware decoding) or the System Player.
However, I have noticed audio lag in the following situations:
1) The page-turning sound when unlocking the screen (comes about a second after the screen has already unlocked);
2) When typing (the keyboard click sounds lag significantly behind my actual keystrokes);
3) In games - both Android OS games and games through various emulators (sound effects lag behind the respective onscreen action).
Anyone else notice this kind of lag with their NC?

Screen Unlock - Yes I do have delay
Keyboard Click - I never heard my keys click now that you mention it.
Games - No lag at all

I also have the 1/2-1 second delay in audio for most games.

Same experience in angry birds and videos using rockplayer. Using arcmedia the video quality is slightly degraded but the audio is much more in sync. I do the 10 sec buffering.

WOW, I am going to have to really check mine out again and see if I just didn't notice the delay, but I can't recall any trouble with Angry Birds.
If there is a delay in games, I wonder how it could be corrected?

Angry Birds was one of the first games I noticed it in. When a bird hits an object, you don't hear the crash sound until a second or so later.
Hopefully, there will be a simple fix for this . . .

Question for 2.1 testers

I have a question for those of you have been testing the 2.1 builds that are available here on xda. How is the video playback compared to 1.5? Is it any better, worse, or the same. I am referring to mp4 video and not online flash videos. Right now I have several movies on my sd card most of the time there are no sync or stuttering issues. Other times I have to reboot the phone to stop the sync issues. Also is the FFWD and REW functions still as slow as they are on 1.5?
I never got any videos to work on 1.5
Havn't tried it on 2.1.
In 1.5 video played great using meridian video player. im using the cyanogen 2.01 now and mp4's are not playing at all. Maybe due to no OpenGL.

What are you useing to convert your videos??
I use format factory. It is the best one that I have found. I usually have no stutters or sync issues as long as I have at least 60MB of RAM free when I start the movie. I use Act1 player.
I use DVD Fab Platinum to convert my DVDs. It will convert to any format you desire. I was testing 2.1, but I didn't try video (I figured it wasn't working until OpenGL was figured out).
With 1.5 I have successfully played eight different (full) movies using the "Video Player" app. This app is free on Market. I also use Auto Memory Manager by Mad Squirrel to keep enough memory free to eliminate any skipping.
I wasn't sure if it relied on OpenGL or not. I am not that familiar with android yet.
Any word on when the real 2.1 update is coming out? We're alway the last to get this kind of thing.

What ROM do you use?
I am able to play the Bond trailer (.mp4) without problems, with WMP and TCPMP.
Link to TCPMP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634951
im using the pheonix rom build 56502 WWE. is this tcpmp any better than the latest coreplayer? because so far coreplayer played videos better than wmp and tcpmp although it was still laggy maybe it's my drivers but im using the omina driver and get a better benchmark than the rest with sktools 792 to be exact
i've been using the video encoder provided in the sticky and it has by far surpassed all other video encoders that i've used. it takes advantage of the hardware acceleration in the X1 but the only video app that uses it is WMP and the Media Panel.

I don't know bout you but using that encoder takes 6 to 7 hours and sometimes it freezes, I don't have the time and patience for that. @ Zeyn Karim I have a collection of video drivers that might maybe improve your performance. Not 100% sure it will but I guess it won't hurt to try.
tried and failed with that converter lol even waited a whole night to encode only to be dissapointed the next morning.
anyway thanks guys for the support and drivers will run couple tests and let ya know the results hopefully this will solve my problem not sure why but my media player doesn't seem to run as good as everyone claims it does, i should remove the omina driver lets hope that's the problem
tried every driver and no luck! looks like i'll never be able to watch anything on my xperia! so i give up! stupid coreplayer! what's taking them so long! been reading up and looks like they rather work on the stupid UI instead of focus on HW support! i don't care if coreplayer looks crap! only thing i want is a smooth crisp video is that too much to ask! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Yeah I'm kinda disappointed as well. I was watching a lot of videos on my old wm 5.0 smartphone but the Xperia fails. I activated "Raw FrameBuffer" and videos got smoother - still don't think thats what you are looking for...(only tried out fairly low quality movies...)

This version of TCMP I get video playback in GDI mode very smooth I watched Shutter Island on it with no lag.
Yeah,my old tytn may not have been the best phone in the world but atleast i could watch some of my favourite shows whenever i felt like.
thanks viper89 will test out the tcpmp, glad to see youve been watching something on your x1,can you please state which encoder you used and are you also using the omina driver?

I actually didn't encode the video, I don't watch movies that much so I really don't bother with encoding and the one that is stickied takes ages to encode . The video drivers that are installed in my phone are:Chainfire-HD2-3D-Driver-Patch-2.0( not sure if this has any effect in are phones),Chainfire-TG01-D3DM( not sure if this any effect either lol),Driver_Ati d3d, SJ SamsungOmnia_Driver_D3D and optxperiabeta02( It makes the sound in the X1 louder but it also said that it changes the video driver to.)
Wow you installed all of them! what's your benchmark with sktools? and does the "optxperiabeta02" damage your speaker in any way? if not could you please post it thanks,Is it a noticable difference?

My Sktool benchmark is: Integer 331, Floating Point 7.71, Draw Bitmaps 656. Also a important fact is it also depends on your rom Stock or none Stock and if it's 6.1 or 6.5 and if your running Sense 2.5 in your rom(which I am), so my stats most likely would be higher in a stock 6.1 rom. I've had my phone for 8 month and been using optxperiabeta02 for 7 month and no speaker damage. And it makes a hell of a noticeable difference lol.
my benchmark is integer 331, floating point 7.47 ,ram access 1519 , draw bitmaps 800 , main write 11070 ,main read 17066 still have no idea why im having video problems.by the way im running 6.1 with manilla 2.5 sense

Hmm draw bitmaps 800 nice. It might because your on 6.1 oppose to my 6.5. Your still having videos problems playing videos in GDI mode in TCMP?

showthread.php?t=684106 havnt got a chance to test yet but will try as soon as i get time did you try kinoma play? im interested to find out hows the playback. damn coreplayer if only they would support our HW id would be so awesome!
Guys there is really a simple answer to this thread: There is only one solution for decent video playback on Xperia X1. Convert your movies to mp4 (h264 avc codec, max. resolution 800 * 480, bitrate 600 kbps) and play them in WMP or Media Xperience Panel (I prefer the latter). You can either use the converter provided by xda (projection) or any other software that supports this codec. There might be some differences in duration of a convertion and it is definitely dependant on your computer's specs (processor) but generally converting videos is a time consuming task and 6 - 7 hours isn't really inappropriate for entire movies (2-3 hours). Everything else won't work. Coreplayer, Pocketplayer, Kinoma etc. do not support hw acceleration and thus 480 * 320 is the maximum resolution that can be played back using those players. If you want high quality movies (what is definitely possible on the Xperia X1) you will have to face convertion to the right format. There aren't any drivers that do miracles and there aren't any insider tips. Only convertion will do the trick.
thank you altae for those bad/good news
Maybe I'm missing something. I've never had any problems playing videos or movies on my X1. Just rewatched Princess Blade on it the other day, in fact.
The truth can sometimes be hard But let's stay serious: It's a pity that WMP or Media Xperience Panel do not support more codecs especially the very widely used xvid/dvix codecs.
But the positive news are: It's definitely possible to play high quality movies as long as they are in the right format. And for all the short videos you would like to show a friend you have always the possibility to play divx/xvid movies in 480 * 320 which isn't that bad for this purpose.

Degraded Video Playback After 1.2 Update

The developer of DVD Catalyst 4 is reporting a serious degradation in video playback with the 1.2 update. Anyone else experience this?
http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...-2-FAIL/m-p/981754/message-uid/981754#U981754
If this is the case, and the methods discussed for blocking OTA don't work, looks like I'll be joining the legions of CM7 users. Video playback on the NC is a huge draw for me.
Unfortunately looks like I'll need a crash course. Doing some cross country traveling on May 7 and want to have a fully functional, video playback capable NC on that date.

Its not really a quality issue, the smoothness of the video playback is affected.
After updating, the videos I already had on my NOOKcolor just looked like frames were being skipped or doubled. Its hard to describe, but they just look "off"
I tried a bunch of different conversion tools and a collection of different settings, and all resulted in similar playback issues, which basically points to an issue with the update rather than the conversion tool used.
I managed to play 3000Kbps h264 video on the NOOKcolor before the update, but now 800Kbps files have playback issues.
Testing youtube produces similar results. While I only played a few trailers from youtube, it appears quality is locked to 360, and even then I get audio sync issues.
I haven't tried the 1.2 update but I did integrate the hardware codecs from 1.2 into to CM7 and saw the same thing. For now I'm sticking with our existing codecs as they perform better.

The developer of DVD Catalyst 4 conversion software has posted sample video files that demonstrate the degraded video quality. So I don't think a simple reboot will fix things. If it were that simple, I think he'd have figured it out, since his paychek in part depends upon the Nook Color being a decent platform for watching movies.
Sorry : Wrong Thread.
Mine worked but the selection method is key
My MP4's worked flawlessly with the new update - I ripped them from my own DVD's using DVD Catalyst 4.0 and the setting for Nook Color. BUT, they didn't work using the gallery - I had to select them using the My Files folder in the library app (I have two full length videos on emmc and two on my 8 Gb SD Card (a Transcend Class 6) - either choice worked.
I was looking at the new build.prop just now, and it's specifying a heapsize of 64M.
That seems to be very high to me. If someone's got a rooted 1.2, it might be interesting to see what manipulating the heap does for video playback. I'm still holding off on updating mine.

[Q] Lag Help

So I have an HTC Hero CDMA with Cyanogen Mod 7 rom in it. The rom improved my phone speed but I I have a few questions on how I cold fix the lag that occurs when playing high end games like Angry Birds or other games like that. Whenever I play a high end game, I experience lag, which makes it almost impossible to enjoy playing the game; so I'm wondering if anyone knows on how to fix the lag that occurs when playing a high end game.
Also is there a way to play HQ videos on youtube? I already downloaded the new youtube app when I flashed Cyanogen Mod 7 on my phone but when I try to play a HQ video, the video keeps playing the audio but not the video itself, so again, is there anyway to fix this?
I really appreciate all the help I can get, Thanks.
Sorry about the double post of the thread, ne to xda forums...
Your questions have already been answered before. Search the forum.
No and no. The Hero is old and those games are high end memory hog games. HQ on YouTube won't ever work.

[Q] HD+: Google movies quality issue on 10.2.1

Hello,
I recently installed cyanogenmod 10,2 on my NookHD+.
Everything is very good--better than stock--apart from the following: the quality of Google play movies is noticeably worse. It's not dreadful, but it's like watching 70s tv: there's ghosting, some haloing, occasionally artefacts. I've restored stock to check, and it's definitely not my imagination. Under stock, the image is extremely sharp and clear.
Any ideas why this might be? Battery life and behaviour is far better under 10.2 than stock. Indeed, when watching films on google play, the device doesn't even get warm. However, it would get quite warm under stock. Is this a clue to the problem?
I tried experimenting with some of the developer options--I changed cpu governor to performance and mucked about with some `force hardware' options, but they made no difference.
Video playback on youtube looked pretty good, by contrast.
I'm pretty ignorant about this kind of thing, but any suggestions would be welcome. 10.2 generally worked very well and, as an environment, it was smoother and more pleasant to work in.
Thanks in advance
Yossell.

Thanks, i did install mx player but it made no difference to Google movies. However I may have been doing it wrong. No videos showed up in mx player even though i had downloaded the google movie. Do you know if it's possible to play a downloaded Google movie through another player?
Thanks for your suggestion though.
oh I didn't know you meant movies downloaded from play store.
probably have drm and won't work with mx.
