This was my first flash and here is my noob story. I flashed a custom rom last night and didn't like it. When I went to flash it back to stock I did not properly disable voodoo lagfix and it froze on odin. I pulled the battery and ended up with the triangle and computer signs. It is a 1008 series so 3 button doesn't work although I can access download mode with a Jig. According to the Voodoo site this can be repaired by "Re-installing Voodoo by flashing the Kernel with Odin: Your ext4 data will be back if the previous procedure didn’t format DATA partition, or Starting into recovery and wipe data. Warning, like it says, you’ll loose your personal data. If you don’t have backup, use this option in last resort." My question is how do I flash just the kernel with Odin? I currently have Odin 1 click and realize this isn't the proper program. Any help would be appreciated.

If its Odin one click then you don't need to disable voodoo. Try again? How long did you wait?
Don't do all that kernel stuff... u probably lost some data when you unplugged the phone... just re-do the whole flash with a ROM

Is there a way I can just reflash the custom rom I had installed without having to go back to stock then use CWM to do it? Is there a way to get into recovery mode instead of download mode? ADB says there is no device connected so i cant use that.
If you still have the rom zip on your internal sd you can reflash that in clockwork recovery and see if it works.

I bought a captivate 3 days ago (in Canada), and I had previously an HTC magic and did tons of tinkering (G1/MT3G have serious development.. kinda dying down sadly.. )
Obviously, I started looking into rooting captivate as well, and other stuff. Just wanted to ask people stuff if I can get them answered.
What is the purpose of ODIN other than flashing your phone back to stock? It is a great program, but I am used to just wiping data and flashing a new update.zip from recovery to get a flash a new ROM. Not wiping from 2.1 eclair to get to cognition kind of threw me off. Can I not use ODIN and go the traditional way and flash the update.zip's?
Also, from ODIN, what exactly is master clear? Does it wipe off everything in the phone? Why would this be preferred over a factory reset from recovery?
I tried googling/looking through captivate dev and couldn't find the answers. Thank you!!

Odin is a windows program leaked from samsung for flashing the galaxy s phone - can be used to flash kernel, firmware or modem or all three at once - NOT used to flash update.zip
Odin 3 one click is for flashing back to stock was made available by dg as a simple recovery method in case of a soft bricked phone or if you flashed your phone and wanted to get back to stock.
Master clear in odin wipes all or most all the data from your internal sd card - I believe factory reset just wipes user settings, cache and account info
with samsung update.zip are flashed via recovery as I am guessing is nearly the same way you have done on other phones
As you can tell there are multiple methods for flashing, spend time reading and learning about them until you have a good understanding about what you are doing with each
Of by the way there is also rom manager clockwork recovery (can get rom manager from the market and install once you are rooted) - don't get this confused with stock recovery

So I'm understanding master clear doesn't wipe the actual ROM? Wouldn't master clear just be the same as just deleting all the stuff from the internal sd card via my laptop?
And thanks for your answers I never used clockwork till now, was using amon_RA recovery cuz it gave some problems to G1/MT3G users but it seems to work wonders on captivate.
Hi,
I recently flashed a new rom (ultimate galaxy s v.7) from xda, and I flashed it via clockwork.
clockwork installed it and I rebooted, and it seemed to hang on the lockscreen for an abnormally long amount of time.
when i take the battery out and try to boot into recovery mode, it flashes to black then shows the galaxy s boot again.
previous to flashing this rom i have cleared the cache and all data on the phone. i have a nandroid backup so if i could get back to clockwork recovery this would be helpful.
also previous to flashing this rom i had a 3 UK rom which i installed by accident via kies, running 2.1...this rom seemed to be quite resistant to installing another rom from kies.
help would be MUCH appreciated...
thanks in advance
so recovery mode isnt an option then ?
What about Download mode ?
Hi,
Download mode worked before.
I have now managed by some miracle to get into recovery mode and now have gained options about a speedmod universal lagfix.
Is this associated with clockwork / ultimate 7.0 rom / a sign that the rom has installed in some form, and should i reboot, or should i now do a nandroid back to the rom i had before?
I believe speedmod uses CWM, so you can just do the rollback to your previous rom

however would it be safe to reboot, as i'm currently in recovery mode and considering to do a nandroid OR alternatively reboot and see if the new rom starts up..
well u cant leave it in recovery mode forever lol, reboot it, if it doesnt come on, try recovery mode again or just flash another ROM thru ODIN
ok. how long do you think is a reasonable time to wait before concluding that the rom doesn't work and I should nandroid back to my old rom...?
Half an hour gives plenty of time .
jje
what would be the reason that it hangs on the galaxy s bootscreen?
could be anything.... installing process not completed properly. best to just re flash .

do you mean recover via nandroid or reflash the same rom, then leave it?
choice is yours, ive never restored using nandroid so dunno what its like. but try it first, if no success re flash using odin. u will lose all your data
hello, I installed [ROM][ICS] KingDroid ICS NoteMania Edition v2.0 and it worked, then I did a nandroid backup and after I installed the S3 optional MOD.
The phone worked fine for some days, then I wanted to delete the S3 MOD so I did a nandroid restore from the previous backup, something went wrong during restoring. So I tried to flash the ROM again from SDcard, I did a dalvik cache wipe and a cache wipe and after I tried to reflash the kingdroid rom from recovery, it flashed the kernel and hung during MODEM flashing.
Now when I turn on the phone it hangs on galaxy note logo.
How can I solve this situation? Go back to GB? How? PC ODIN?
Thanks
Please read the thread before doing anything. NEVER EVER RESTORE A NANDROID BACKUP FROM ICS KERNELS. I think you just did that and now you are a part of Superbrick family. I think just read threads about how to revive your bricked note and follow the procedure or Samsung service is the only way out
Check if your phone enters download mode ( power+home+volume down ). If so - you're not bricked and can flash GB stock rom with ODIN.

It enters in download mode after warning me about the danger of flashign a custom os. So I canm proceed to flash a stock GB rom? N7000XILB1 ?
As you said your phone hangs on Samsung screen. When this thing happened first time with me i was too scared.
Dont panic. So you can go to download/Recovery mode. Flash a stok GB ROM. It worked for me. Dont worry about warning.
See Dr. Ketan's Thread for step by step guide. Carefully follow his instructions.
Best of luck..

Do I need to replace the pit first? I think the kingdroid rom replaced the pit and created new different partitions, so if I put the stock rom won't it need the original pit? I'm lost on that.
..To be honest I go back and forth from GB to ICS to CM9 without any problems (maybe I'm one of the lucky guy and maybe at certain point I will brick as well!)...BUT what I do (when from ICS I move to GB) is to pass ALWAYS through AbyssNote Kernel 4.2.
So hoping you have a GB previous nandroid backup AND you can still enter in recovery modified mode, I would suggest the following steps
1. enter in recovery mode
2. flash the Abyss Kernel by choosing the zip
3. WITHOUT reboot the phone > go Advanced
4. re-boot recovery
5. once in Abyss kernel> factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache
6. restore
7. choose GB backup
8. start restoring
Before learning about Abyss, I had very similar soft-brick like your one....but I easly managed it with the above method
Hope it helps
so, it was not super bricked. I flashed the pit and then Gb without any problem. now it's working.
Good deal, just make sure you read the stickies next time and don't restore nandroid backups in CWM (Use abyss kernel).
There's plenty of safe kernels now that have disabled the brick bug as a workaround though. If you want stock ICS, flash Franco or Speedmod kernels. If you want a CM9 rom, there's plenty of variations. There's also an aokp rom.

Phone won't boot past Galaxy Note Boot image
Phone will go in download mode by pressing Vol-Home Power buttons
Phone will go in recovery menu by pressing Vol+Home Power buttons but if i try to flash anything it shows verification error.
Anything flashed with Odin, goes successfully without any errors, but phone still won't boot past Galaxy Note boot image. When connected to PC in Odin mode USB recognised, when connected to PC with Galaxy Note boot image, USB not recognised (malfunctioning error appears)
I tried flashing ics/gb stock roms, kernels, pit files, and nothing helps

actually was on the stock ics and tried to install kingdroid by CWM.zip
and wiped data and cache from touch/temporary cwm..
then after install it got stuck on the first screen...
since then have tried to flash stock ics / gb firmwares but not getting past the first screen
first of all, make sure you don't make some foolish steps in wiping your phone., secondly, try to uninstall cmpletely PC kies and reinstall it again after. Once you've reinstalled that, don't open it, just open PC ODIN and try to boot back your phone in download mode. Make sure you have a yellow box on COM:1 in ODIN and use an extracted stock GB tar file and start flashing again.
EDIT: Since you've just mentioned you already wipe data in stock ICS.. are you using a safe kernel when you did the wiped?
if not, you may have toasted your Note.. imho...
it can take 5 to 10 mins after install to start however if it still goes no further and you can get into recovery can you flash any custom kernal,if you can do so then wipe and try to reflash if not i would ask dr ketan as he is awesome and may be able to help
^ No need to wait for that, as OP has already done a stupid thing of wiping on a touch CWM.. something that shouldn't be done at all....
only thing he can do is go to the section for the pit method partition to revive his phone... that's it!

since i do have warranty on my phone left for another 2 months should i give it to the samsung repair center ?? what will they repair and how much time is expected it to repair ??
I suggest you ran first the partition scanner from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823918, see if your partition don't have one of those bricked blocks....(courtesy of hg42)
Also consider this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886 for the pit file method

but sadly the stock recovery is not accessing my memory card files and only internal sd and it has no option to mount storage ..
how to access the files i put in my memory card.. or should i flash some other ics stock rom as they have more options in stock recovery ??
no need to aggravate the problem by flashing another ICS... your Note's been bitten already.. don't let it bite twice...
Your last rom flashed is KL3 then have you wipe cache and data from recovery?
If not then do it, it should boot then.
Make sure last rom was flashed correctly and u are currently on KL3
If you have to press home button in recovery to enter your choice then it should be gb (kl3)rom (on ics you need to press power to select)
If wiping cache and data also not work, then flash wipe version of gb rom. If it stuck at data.img then yu have got damaged and should send to service Centre, without doing anything

Hey there, ive got a Galaxy Note that was attemped to wipe data from with cwm.zip and that caused it too reboot and the original rom was wrecked, my situation now is that i cant access CWM anymore, if boot phone with power button only i get the recovery mode telling me to connect to Kies.
But Kies doesnt see that the phone is in recovery mode and just keeps on saying "Connecting" in the top left panel.
When i boot into download mode and try to flash an original rom and .pit 16gb file, it sticks at "factoryfs.img"
I am out of ideas and desperate as its not my phone, i have googled and tried different solutions for hours but to no avail.
Thanks in advance.
If you have tried to wipe data using temp cwm them most probably it's bricked. Check hg42 repartition method. You will loose some GB of memory but the phone may boot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886
But always first try to install a GB rom first, incase that works. Most probably a 3 file rom.

I honestly dont care if i lose GBs, i use a 64gb SD card, but anyhow, could you link me the 3 file GB rom i need? phone is from sweden so i guess any european one should do, i just dont want to mess up things more, would be eternally grateful if you could link me what i need.
i cant do the "find brick" since im on the connect to kies recovery, not the standard recovery where i can flash stuff, either that or download mode.
thanks

Here is how to get into recovery if only download mode and check for bad blocks. use this only if you dont have warranty and flashing GB fails as well a factoryfs.img.. also make sure you reboot into download mode if the flash is not successful. dont continue from there itself..

EDIT: Got it working on GB, thank you sooo much!!!!
Good. Boot into recovery and do a factory reset.
