How to get Google talk or call to work in other places apart from the US?
Sent from my X10i
I think you mean google voice? there's no such thing as 'call', and Gtalk is their IM service which is available world-wide. There are some methods available, but judging by people's comments they are extremely unreliable. I'd like to think that when someone contacts me via phone or SMS, *they will be able to contact me*, for me it's not worth messing with even though I'd really like to use GV.
Well if the a person studies abroad and has to call back home its gonna be pretty expensive. I installed skype but it has. Horrible voice quality.

There was an app in the market place via which one can make video caller rather phone calls for free via ggoogle voice. But they mentioned that its available only to US customrrs
I think this is only available to US customers, you can only call through gtalk to gtalk just like Skype. Gtalk call is very limited.

maybe soon Gtalk will release a better version but right now we have to deal with it. You can just use Skype for the meantime.

Hardly, I've using video calling on Gtalk via iChat, it works very well.
You can't call a service crap just because it doesn't offer a feature that you want (which it never advertised).
Well Google voice only runs in America.

Huh? I have perfect call quality with both google talk voice, and skype. You prob had bad internet at that moment. Maybe something updating.
If it's a girl, calling would be the classical way of doing it, but video chatting might be a little better... I don't know.
Yeah I guess

Does anyone know if there is an app that allows voice changing?
or if some one is currently making one?
paid or free
SpoofApp does that, and there is another one similar. They both have the ability to record the call as well, with the voice change.

there's one called 123spoof for g1, they came out with i am t-pain for the iphone which is a autotune app.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btN5yuVcRes - i am t-pain.
Yes i have used bluffmycall and spoof, but neither of them have many options on voice changing.
i was thinking more a voice changing application that allowed you to chose your pitch and other factors. not really a app that sends you to a third party.
if any developer is interesting in making one PM me
For some reason I can't see it in my Canadian 1.6 donut market on my G1
I want to be able to use skype to talk to people over data.
search google for "android market enabler". Use it to set your properties to tmobileUS.
I did. It's not showing skype. I see other apps that were not there but Skype's not one of them.

You can't talk through data with skype, it's useless app.
I think that app has been taken down because I can't find it on the market either.
Here is skype. I found it on 4shared:

Skype will be releasing a true data client shortly, just wait for it.
If you absolutely need to use Skype right now and you already have a Gizmo5 account, you can install Sipdroid and use Gizmo5's Skype connector service. Obviously this is not as practical a solution as a native Skype client.
Is there any way to do international texting relatively cheap / free other than skype too?

Try Fring. It supports Skype with Voip. Can make Skype and Skype-out calls.

for text try voipcheap.com and eventually using it with and after use the sbmessj as a software on your android phone to manage everything. Of course you need a connection data too.

Why doesn't Google implement video chat into Gtalk or Google voice? I think that would be the next logical step in the evolution of those two apps what do you guys here think?
Skpe is good but I don't use it and I would rather use a app that I already use on my desktop that I am familiar with that I can use on my mobile device.
(Nexus One) plus it would give me a choice.
I know that the Nexus One does not have a front facing camera, but a native video chat app for the android os would be best. plus it simple to make a mirror for the camera so that it can be use for video chat.
What makes you think they're not working on it for Android already?
http://www.google.com/chat/video
I know that they have the plug in for the desktop which i use, i do hope that it will be implemented ,maybe the next update (gingerbread).
Won't do us much good without a front facing camera. Maybe once the hardware becomes more common they will add it.
I remember when video phones were all the rage many years back. The plans were ridiculous, the quality was piss poor, and no one used it. Now that mobile networks are getting faster it might start to make sense finally.
well once a long time ago i had a iphone (god forgive for i have sin) and some guy had written a video chat program for it which never was release but i copy the mirror setup to use the camera on the iphone which did not have a front facing camera. so nexus one could use it .
You don't have to have a front facing camera for video chat.
Imagine you're talking to someone and see something cool. "Hey, check this out" / turn on video chat for a few seconds and point at whatever / turn video chat off.
As video chat becomes more and more popular, I bet that's what it'll be used for rather than looking at someone's face for 30 minutes.

I certainly hope they do but I don't think they're in much of a hurry because alternative services like Fring and Skype already have it covered.
However [and this may be a little off the rails] I hope that MMS is high on their Google Voice priority list because people send me pictures and not only can I not see them, it doesn't even tell me that I got it. Very annoying.
Whats the point to use video chat to show someone something, just record a video and mms it. I don't think video chat will catch on anyways, its been tried before with landlines. People just don't like to be seen when talking on the phone. They wouldn't mind seeing you but they don't want to be seen. Plus I see schools getting pissy about new types of "sexting."

for one its real time ,i won't have to open another app to send a mms, i can just point and show and im done.
I guess it's a question of time that Google will bless us with a full blown video app (mobile or not). The recent acquisition of Gips gives us a hint.
As voice and video is however only marginally close to Google's mission (and possibly, core competence) of making the world's information universally accessible, they are dragging their feet. And, they make internet-enabling all sorts of devices a priority.
But I can't wait for an integration of Google voice with gizmo5, which would make the talk/chat client more Skype-like.

Doesn't that only activate if she opens the Maps app?
Video chat should be made standard into android and smartphones in general. Its of great use for people that communicate thru sign language. I know it would help friends of mine and their families.

I have a friend in the UK and I'm in Canada. We had Google Voice but hers got hacked and it's a nasty situation but anyway we want to be able to text, or do something similar to text. We go on ebuddy now but it's obviously not as nice as texting or alike. We can't text because we don't have international plans and a lot of apps like textplus aren't available in the Uk market.
Can anyone please help?
PingChat! check it out here http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.enflick.android.ping
Plus it works cross-platform incase you have any friends with iPhones / Blackberries

Seriously?
Just use google talk, which is also cross-platform (even more so than pingchat!)
But I can't set up google talk as a push service like I could with Google Voice. It's not the same.
PingChat isn't available for my friend in the UK, she's on tmob.

strange... I have it on my Nexus One, but I don't see anything about device restrictions anywhere.
direct link if it helps at all -

Why not use email?
use Kik messenger. it's whole point is to emulate BBM type chats, it's in beta, and pretty basic, but it looks gorgeous and they're adding features.
nimbuzz , fring for voip or chatting .
pingchat works fine too and there's an unreleased beta version of whatsapp it will be released soon.
cheers
KiK and pingchat don't show up for her. Any direct APK?
Try textplus.
Free messaging to anyone in the US. If you're not in the US or the recipient isn't, its free as long as they have the app installed.
kinda odd that she cant see most of these apps we r mentioning that most if not all of us can access to. is she rooted? n like someone stated, email is probably your best choice if everything else isn't working

As far as I know, it is not supported by the skype software. Fring used to be able to do it, but skype blocked their client.

Thank you for the reply, I'm using Tango now, tested and works. Too bad Skype doesn't work, wondering why actually.
Would be nice to know if those providers having a contract with Skype actually do enable video...

That is the one thing that is driving me nuts. Having features that should be able to run on any carrier being exclusive.
Figured out a way, not the best but it works:
Download IP Webcam and configure properly, it will work with skype, but higher than 320x240 size it will most probably crash.

F**** skype, use oovoo. It's at the moment the onliest software where you can do videocalls between the tab and a pc (it can do other devices as well)
Hope skype looses enough users, it's really anoying that they still have not solved it. So give oovoo a chance...

Hmm... currently checkin out a couple of SIP clients with Video support, stating that its possible to connect with skype, just waiting for my account and then I'll let you know.
Edit: If there's really no solution, I might open a thread and see if a few dudes can come up with something ,I use to code TCP/IP stuff on Unix, but not (yet) familiar with the Java crap, as I'm not a fan of that language. Will checkout NDSK tonight, any developer reading this, feel free to contact me in case you'd like to do something together, alone I will not start, I'm stuffed with work as a freelancer.
