When using Aldiko on the NC the pages don't seem to be formatted correctly. It turns the page too far and after a few pages into the chapter you have a quarter of the next page invading the right side of the screen. I prefer the app with the night view but can't use it like this as its unusable. Anyone else have this problem?
Have you changed the LCD density at all? Moving away from the default could mess up the formatting of Aldiko books...

Aldiko won't remember last page read
I'm having a different problem with Aldiko on the NC. The program cannot remember the specific page-read location when re-staring. Instead, it returns to the first page of the most recent chapter. This also happens if I switch between portrait and landscape -- It jumps to the first page of the current chapter.
I bought 2.0 today for $3……It has worked perfect for me. A side note,,.I like it much better than the stock NC reader. You can set the brightness down much dimmer. More comfortable onn the eyes.,and the paid version supports drm epubs.

Thanks for recommending the paid version. It has none of the issues I described earlier.

+1 for the 2.0 paid version. I no longer use the stock reader and library.
Add me to the list of those who think Aldiko Pro is worth the dough. None of the bugs (had the one you mentioned, plus formatting quirks, plus it would never remember my spot, dropping me to the start of the chapter every time I left the book (even to the Aldiko menu). And it has terrific epub support, and nice customizability.
For free (non-library) book reader, I'd go with Cool Reader.
Another vote for 2.0 paid version. Plus it's a whole lot easier to import books.
I would recommend moon+ as a better reader than aldiko. Moon+ offers a wide range of customizations, including my favorite real page turning effect, and syncs up with my Calibre server flawlessly.
Works 95% on NC, only has a few issues with some menu text colors that look invisible, and the app will restart when you create a bookmark, but it still makes the bookmark and returns you to the last place you left off.

I guess I'll be the dissenting voice on Aldiko Paid. Based on the recommendations here, I went ahead and bought it. I think this is the first program I've ever bought (any platform!) that has LESS features and options than the free version. For instance, I had set the free version to turn to the next page regardless of whether I tap on the left or right side of the screen. That option is GONE from the paid version. The free version was remembering my place when I closed a book or the app and then later returned to it. The paid version opens to the cover (page 1) everytime I open it. I created a bookmark, but when I go to navigate to it, the program tells me there are no bookmarks.
Very frustrating!

I also recommend Moon+. very good bookmarking too and lots of views and auto scrolling
Moon+ looks interesting.
I tried Moon+ today. It's pretty descent for a free app. There are a few bugs and it could use some refining, but it definitely has some nice features. The biggest shortcoming for me is the lack of font choices. Something is not quite right with the ones available. On the plus side, the highlight and note features rock! Aldiko 2.0 should offer this.
I like aldiko but the new version has unbelievably slow page turning which I dislike. I'm gonna try moon now.

I was wondering if there was some other eReader out there that I could install on my rooted NC. The one that comes with the NC is pretty basic I was also hoping that I could find one that has text-to-voice.
Any advice ?
The only one I know that can do text to voice is called Wordplayer but it's a pretty clunky app.
You can try Moon Reader which is pretty good and has a fancy 3d page turning affect.
But my ultimate recommendation is to stick to the build in app since no other app will have access to B&N purchased stuff. And if you don't use B&N, you should return your nook.

Thanks for the recommendations I will look those apps up. I would never return my NC. Even tho I don't use the B&N store I have 100's of books that are ePub and work perfectly well on my Nook. B&N is not the only source for books.
Cheers
FBReader is what I use.. I didn't like Moon+ because it's WAY too easy to flick when I want to turn; and I don't like flicking to scroll personally.. I like to just tap and let it change the page..
I've found the B&N Book app is slow as balls, has anyone else noticed that? I have some epub's that load fine on my computer, Moon+, FBReader... but they take 2+ minutes to open in the B&N reader app.
I'll just keep using FBReader. If I actually have some B&N books (buy or borrow from wife) I'll use the built-in but otherwise.. Oh, and for night reading, I like white on BLACK with the brightness down, TYVM. No more white on grey.
FYI, this is how I set up FBReader:
First off, you gotta have Softkeys working so you can hit the menu button as the notification/status bar is hidden by default. I personally set the Softkeys tool to Double-click home button and launch Softkeys, works pretty well when I need to access it.
So then hit the Menu, pick the More option, then the Settings option. Fiirst thing I do is to make it easier to get to settings and such, I go into Appearance and check Show status bar. Then in the Scrolling options, I uncheck everything. That makes it scroll on tap, and scrolls "up down", ie: you tap the bottom half of the screen anywhere, and it scrolls down. top half anyway, scrolls up. If you like the left/right (like the Nook app does), leave the "Horizontal Scrolling" option checked.
As for book locations, you guys might have a place you put them.. I left it /sdcard/Books and just put my epubs there for now. I might revise this later so the Nook app and FBReader are looking in the same place.

Well, of you have a source of free ebooks then that's cool. But if you are buying books, B&N should be your first stop. They built the awesome tablet and some suspect that he hardware is subsidized by book sales. Just a recommendation. I mean if you can find book cheaper somewhere else, I guess the choice is obvious.

Forget using the B&N store. If your going to buy a book i'd recommend Amazon solely based on their whispersync.
As far as ereaders apps, i have tried most of them. FYI the smoothest browser i've found so far has been Opera 10. With skyfire being second and dolphin HD third although its pretty slow. My current favorites ereaders are Aldiko, and the Amazon Kindle reader. Both run much smoother on the nook than the stock app.
Aldiko: It will read several different types and will allow you to import epub files directly which is great if your have a lot of epub books. I like the layout of the books a little bit better than fbreader but thats a personal preferance. Fb reader has a lot of the same features. They both allow you to change the brighness of the screen on the fly but sliding your finger vertically along the left side of the page. I think thats a great feature that i wish more apps would incoporate.
Amazon Kindle:
I use this a little bit differently. If you have an account with them it allows you to use their whispersync. This basically syncs up the page number you are on across different devices, this works for books you already have not just ones you buy from them. This allows me to read things on my nook and on my phone without having to chase down my current position in the book on each device. I also like that it offers a sepia background option.
Importing books you already have or books from other sources is a little more involved with the kindle app. I use a free program called calibre to convert my ebooks, any format, to a .mobi format. Then you have to copy them onto the sd card of each device you want to read them on. Dropbox is your friend with this.
If you buy the book off amazon you don't have to go through this as you can just download them from amazon. But i'm not one to buy books really so i have to go through all the steps.
Anyway good luck, this post got long quickly.
A side note, sightly off topic: The NC can view any epub or txt file uploaded to your SD card., so even if you don't get your material from B&N you can still use the NC very well.

Aldiko is my personal favorite. (epub format)
I've taken in creating PDFs of my school textbooks from the eBooks I purchase from the publisher. It simply more convenient to carry my GTab with four or five textbooks, rather than the books themselves. Unfortunately, the PDF reader supplied by Adobe really basically sucks. Specifically, there doesn't seem to be a way to go to specific pages, expect by a slider bar (rather than typing a page), and worse still, does allow the use of bookmarks and chapter labels that I put in the book.
Can anyone recommend a PDF reader that works well on the GTab, that allows me to directly reference page numbers, bookmarks, chapters, search functions, etc.? Free is better than not, but I'll don't mind paying for an actually useful app.
Please help.

I use my g tab for the exact same purposes. Am in university and the new semester starts on Monday in this part of the globe.
Just bought repligo for 2.99. USD today. Very happy - does highlighting and bookmarks and notes for my notes and etextbooks.
(Btw I'm in Singapore (not a part of China xD ) - got a friend to bring it back for me last month, probably the first in Asia to have the g tab?)

Aldiko Premium on the market is version 2.0: http://www.appbrain.com/app/aldiko-book-reader-premium/com.android.aldiko
I assume the free version will be updated to 2.0 eventually.
What's wrong with Acrobat Reader X? It's Robust, does searching, supported by Adobe, available free...
Just go to Adobe.com, get Acrobat reader, pick "other operating system" and select Android. Works great on every build and kernel I've tried so far.
What's the best Google Reader app that will work for the VG?
Well...have you tried the, uh, Google Reader app?
Of course. But I am unable to get my account to connect to it I get a no accounts message and hitting "add accojnt" gets me an unableto sign in message.
I use Pulse:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alphonso.pulse&feature=search_result
works awesome, syncs with my google reader account perfectly and works great on a large screen.
I tried it a long time ago on my phone and I didn't like it, mostly because it didn't seem to fit well on the phone, but on the gTablet it's all kinds of awesome.
No issues whatsoever on vegan gingerbread rc1
I have used a bunch of the available options. If you want a fancy GUI and don't follow a ton of feeds there is pulse or feedly. A quicker/more pro type reader would be newsrob, g_reader, feedr or goodnews. Rssdemon is good, but doesn't 2 way sunc with Google reader. I think newrob might be the best of these right now, but this is very subjective and changes with releases.
I have been pleased with the features and flexibility of gReader. Works in conjunction with Google Reader feeds, and great for offline downloading and reading of RSS feeds. As I have a long commute without wireless access, the offline reading works well on the gTablet.
FeedR is the best out there. I have pulse, but just to show off. Pulse is rather pointless if you follow more than 10 feeds.
I have a problem with Google Reader and that when I click on an article it gives me a small window, about the size of a mobile phone screen to read the article and when I go back one level, it goes full screen again.

Did you email Google for support? If you do and enough people mention it they will incorporate it into their next build.
It's apparently a version problem, in 0.9.3....0.9.2 didn't have that problem. If I could find the 9.2 .apk file, I'd go back one version.
From my experience the "tiny window" issue is a result of the DPI setting on Vegan Tab. In order to correct an issue with the market not displaying correctly the DPI has to be set to 161, but that throws off other apps. Mainly Google Reader it seams.

I have used a lot of the readers out there. My current favorite is GoodNews. I use a lot of feeds (200+) and it seems to be the only one that can handle this load. The dev is doing a lot of new stuff and improvements.
I just recently found D7 and I'm a pretty big fan. Pretty fully featured with a nice interface. Fast too!
Hi people,
Just wondering if you guys tried other readers?
I guess not all of them will work fine due to turn page animations and stuff (I didn't root mine yet).
The kobo one looks pretty slick, and you can import books into their library (though I'd prefer it to work with Calibre).
Well, just to gather some advices!
I find the stock reader to have the best contrast, so I usually use it. Aldiko works fine, but the black of the letters seems more washed out and the background is more white than the "grey" of e-ink.
Success so far with Ezpdf to read pdf (duh) and repligo.
I guess someone commented before that you can't get zoom and orientation change via software. Ezpdf changes orientation and repligo gets zoom.
I want both!!!
Will try epub this afternoon, and comics later on...
Great, thanks for the hints.
Could someone try Kobo? Looks really slick on my Nook Color, I wonder how it rates on the Touch.
Moonreader+ and Coolreader work well and page turns can be made with the hardware buttons. Kindle reader works well too.
I use Calibre and Calibre Library to get books onto the device. Mostly read with the 'stock' reader though.
disabling touch page turns
Do any of the alternative reader apps have the option to disable touch screen page turns, using only the hardware keys? I'm open to non-app software suggestions as well, but I can't really change my reading habits to stop using my finger.
I'm looking for a better reader me too.
After some weeks, what reader you recommend for epub?
Is there one that can read also lit files?
And for pdf?
Many thanks
I've tried a bunch of readers and went with Mantano Reader, available through the droid market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mantano.reader.android.trial&feature=search_result. This is for a 7 day trial. I like being able to pick the dictionary the program uses and the app is nice. I've been talking with the company about adding touch key support for our Nooks and I believe they might do it with the next update. It's not cheap, it's $8.00 but displays book info and IMHO worth the purchase price.
There is no player that is compatible with the lit format?
Both repligo and ezpdf accept hardware button, and have zoom and orientation change via menus (even though some of them need some guessing, as menus wording is white or missing - I don't know which). Droid comic viewer is a winner too, light and fast (with cbz - as cbr tend to be quite slow).
best reader
Hi, after some testing, I would highly recomend coolreader, due to a few functionalities that other readers lack:
- it's aware you are using nook touch so:
- it has screen refresh options, with the configurable number of refreshes before the full refresh. No more black screen during refresh, refresh is even better that in original B&N reader. No other reader can do that !
- it knows you have four hardware keys, and, it can remap them to anything ! also double and long click, so you can have up to 12 actions assiociated with the hardware buttons.
- screen has 9 tap zones, also configurable, including touch and long touch
- a nice small title bar, you can have some useful info as clock here
- current reading book screensaver buid in. Just have to choose it as any other nook screensaver. Curren book cover copied automatically to the csreensaver directory after opening a book. Simple, but lot of fun.
- registers itself to the android as the EPUB reader, so you can open book directly from B&N library, which is still the best library for nook touch I think.
- plus all other functions as fonts, dictionaries etc..
it's not perfect of course - little slow book opening, no DRM and PDF support. But can still read a lot of formats, as rtf, and doc. even docx.

I never thought of this! I agree the B&N library has the best "browseability". I don't really mind CoolReader's book list/browser, but two things annoyed me right from the start:
1. I had to open EACH book individually to get the covers to show up in the CoolReader library browser.
2. The CoolReader library listings would simply NOT hold the sort order I had given them (e.g., by author, title, etc.).
Other than that, though, I agree with your conclusion. And the HUGE selling point for me is the CoolReader has -- as you stated -- the refresh control. I don't like the slowness of having every page blink BLACK on each turn. It might be a total refresh and won't allow ghosting, but it simply doesn't look good to me.
Thanks again for your thoughts!
Nomad Reader is also very good.
It supports partial refresh, Nook's page turn buttons and you can adjust the contrast.

I have installed CoolReader on my rooted NTR, but the default reader that opens when selecting book from Nook library is still Nook reader. And screen saver is still taking from the current book opened in Nook reader. Is there any other step I have to do to achieve what you told above? Thank you.
The main reason that I use the stock reader is the page numbering - it seems like all of the other readers change the "number of pages" and "what page am i on" based on the current font selection. Stock reader must be able to determine what the "true" page number is so it feels more like a printed book.
I tried CoolReader but there were too many options - and besides the aforementioned page number issue, I didn't like the status bar at the top.
I really have no complaints with the stock reader...

In my case nook asks me which application should open the book chosen in Library application. Maybe you have selected "Always use this app" in this dialog earlier. Try to install another reader or remove and install cool reader again.
Regarding the screensaver, cool reader stores the book cover in a screensaver directory. Just open nook settings and select Current book screensaver.

Hey guys, can anyone recommend a good ebook reader that I can use to read downloaded books and PDFs?
Moon reader is my new favorite. Have used aldiko and nook before.
My life for Aiur
Moon+ looks to be pretty good, what I'm wondering is if the pro version is worth forking over 5 bucks for?
Moon + pro its the only one that has both text to speech and can synch across devices (using dropbox). Its the only one I use. (Use calibre on your PC with dedrm plugins to convert to epub and you can buy books from anywhere.)
You just have to wait for the upcoming update, because the current version doesn't work with jelly bean. However the update should be released any time now, since the developer has a version that fixed the disappearing text in jelly bean. If you email the developer I'm sure he would send you a link. I would post it, but I'm not sure its OK with him. I think the free version doesn't have text to speech, otherwise it seems the same. When you upgrade, make sure to try it with ivona voice to read to you, all other voices are way too robotic. Ivona is good enough to use on long drives, out during mindless chores.
Thanks for the tips, gonna check out Aldiko and Moon. Seems like Moon for jelly bean is out on market now!
I actually Like the Kindle App... But I'm a little Biased... I have a eInk kindle that I read on and all my books are stored on the amazon cloud (I just convert ePub to Mobi) also I love that my Spot in books is synced across my kindle iPhone and Nexus 7 (yes I have a little bit of everything)
Mantano is my reader of choice at the moment. I was previously using Aldiko. Can't stand Kindle or Nook apps, margins are way too wide and pointless book titles at the top of every page.

I think you may have just helped me decide what to spend some of the $25 on . The dropbox sync alone is worth it. I've been using aldiko premium, but moon+ seems to have a lot more options.
For anyone else looking for solutions,
i tried aldiko and moon and they were great but I had a ton of .mobi files from my OG kindle days and it seems like FB reader is the best one that supports the most formats.
I noticed these programs do not have the page turner smooth animation like Google Play (Books) blue icon. Any app that has this smooth animation?
Is google books nice to? cant install it on my nexus one
is there a way to import books into google books?

You can try Kindle, it has plenty of reading options and text spacing etc.

Moon Reader has page transitions. What's more, they are even better than Google Books' transitions, because they vary based on the direction of your swipe, and from what position, if you pull from the bottom right hand corner, the page "turns" from the bottom right hand corner.
Just dig around in the settings, the page animation is there.

Alkido or whatever it's called sucks. They haven't updated it since march, and all 7" tablets revert to phone interface, which makes the menu button inaccessible. They haven't released a fix for this, despite 2 very high quality 7" tablets being released in this timeframe (Gtab 2 7.0 and the Nexus 7).
I would refrain from buying Alkido until the fix this problem.
Moon Reader all the way.
I've been using moon for awhile now too. You have several types of page turning animations if that your thing and in landscape you can set it up for dual pages like a regular book. Just play around with all the options there's tons. Since I have a kindle also dropbox is what really won me over so I can just convert everything or I even like the kindle app but more out of convenience, but since they've updated it alot lately you can mail yourself pdfs or other docs which will be converted for you and look perfect, which was a feature I missed from the actual kindle.
Any reader app out there (besides Moon) that supports syncing page positions? That's the only thing I miss from iBooks
