Droid 1 not recognizing being connected to laptop? Laptop not recognizing droid, will charge but that's it. Stock 2.2 FRG83D build. I know my data cable isn't the one that came with my phone, could that make a difference? Also my operating os on my laptop is windows 7 64 bit. Anyone have this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I checked out some threads but i wasn't able to find anything. I had a windows machine and was wire tethering just fine with my rooted htc hero but now i have a mac and i am wondering if there is anyway to wire tether to my mac as well? I have wireless tether for root users on my phone version 1.60 i could just use that but when i enable wi-fi encryption it still is an unsecured wireless network when i try and connect to it, i am not sure what to do? Any help would be great.
I know PDA net free works good on macs my brother has been using it on his older MacBook for a couple of months now just fine

Wifi tethering. If you need to charge too, you can use USB for that and still use wifi for the data.
My desktop doesn't have wireless. So I need to use usb tethering

Well... a driver is a peice of software that lets any device and computer communicate... im gonna go out on a limb and say that you proabably need drivers to tether.

You have to have a rom that has tethering enabled. On fusion I went to wireless network. There is a selection for Tethering select that and you should see a check box. You need to check that.
As long as you have the usb drivers installed for the captivate windows will see the phone as a network connection in the network connections section of control panel. Select the android connection and you should be on the internet.
BTW this is all on Windows 7 64bit pro. I would hazard a guess that all flavors of Win 7 will be the same and Vista would be similar. As for XP not sure its pretty old.
Thanks for the help everyone, I actually got it working with the Captivate drivers yesterday thanks to studacris' link. It's really irritating trying to find stuff like that from mobile haha. Thanks for the help though
(Not to hijack, but just because it relates to drivers and tethering.) A few months ago, I was able to tether to a wifi router over a usb cable through the captivate using a right-out-of-the-gate ubuntu 10.10 install (diagram that sentence - I dare you). In other words, ubuntu pc-usb-captivate tethering-wifi.
So if you have an ubuntu install with no wifi access, the captivate should be able to do it for you. I realize this isn't the op's situation, but it might be a good thing for someone to keep in kind if they don't have a wireless card yet.
drivers
I just got a new Win7 64bit laptop, had to install Both the Samsung USB Drivers, AND Kies Mini to get tethering to work.
Just the Samsung USB drivers were not enough.
What i did i went to walmart and bought bluetooth chip for 20$ installed the solfware and simply paired them it work fine it was slightly slow for you tube but none the less it was like carring a modum in my pocket

Ive tried 3rd party apps and wiping all data nothing works, please help!
What kind of USB wire are you using? Is it Verizon branded or a different brand? With some Androids on Verizon, you have to use a Verizon branded USB wire or it won't connect. Its there way of making you overpay for a charger.

Can't get this to work and its mildly annoying. I can adb sideload ROMS and whatnot but need to boot into windows to get any real file transfers done.
Strange this is the only phone (tried lg g2, and gal nex) that I have an issue with.
in b4 no replies.
I sympathize with you. Specific to your question I have no answer. Go to the Android website and it talks about Windows and Mac. No Linux.
BUT, I use wifi file transfer pro.... From play store. And also AirDroid. Gets it done through wifi on common network. And it's very fast for me. Hope that helps.

Ugh... I'll see if I can hack it together.
I was hoping a developer would stop by to enlighten me.
I don't have WiFi for the desktop it's always plugged in.

no dev here but i dual boot linux and win7 and i would recommend Google android MTP on linux and read and see what everyone says. i will be booting back into linux tomorrow and i will see what you need to do my self, but right now i have some clients idevices to work on and iTunes and most of my modding software is windows only
Doesn't have to be actually through wireless wifi to work. One of my computers is directly connected to the router. But if no router is used at all then it would not be an option for you

I just got a Moto X and I'm also running Ubuntu 13.10 on a desktop. When I get home this evening I will test this out and see if I can get it to work in any way. I haven't been on Ubuntu recently since I've been doing the rooting process through Windows.
just installed ubuntu gnome's new lts and its working out of the box
