Switching to the Captivate. Have all my contacts backed up on my Live/Hotmail account. Anyway way to just back those up and switch it to the Cap?
The only way I can think of at the moment would be to open your internet browser and login to your hotmail account, then export your contacts to your computer which should give you a save file. Then make a gmail account (which you're going to have to do anyways to use the android market) and import your contacts to that, then you can sync them to your phone. Another step would be to setup in the Contacts app setting to automatically make any new contact save to your gmail account instead of the phone.
Sweet, just did that. Just had to export CSV from Hotmail and import the CSV to my Gmail.
Thanks!
Glad I could help

Once upon a time (before having my kick ass Hero...) I had an exchange email address set up with my gmail fwd'ed to that exchange server (mail2web).
Well, I am curious if anyone has a ny suggestions on how I should go about taking all my contacts I had sync'd through the exchange server, and adding them to my gmail account, or whatever else may be a good solution? I only get spam on my mail2web email address anymore. Just want to take it off my phone.
Hope this makes sense to everyone... And if need be, I have a rooted hero w/ the unofficial modaco (obelisk79) updated rom.
Once again, thanks in advance, everyone!

In Outlook:
go to File, Import/Export
choose "Export to a file"
choose "Comma Separated Values (Windows)"
in the "Select folder to export from:" screen, choose Contacts
choose a path to save the csv file
From there, go into your GMail contacts and select "Import".. feed it the CSV file and you're all set
The above is good for a one-time sync. I know there are programs out there that will keep the two synced up, but I've only used one (and it was a while ago and had some issues), so I don't want to recommend any...
Anyone else have good experience with a contacts sync app between Outlook and GMail and want to share?
If your Exchange contacts have phone numbers, be careful. I had this issue syncing my friends Verizon Voyager contacts to Gmail. The phone numbers would show up in the Notes field in Gmail because Gmail did not like the table structure. Gmail might work well with an exchange.csv but this wasn't the case with me and my friends Verizon contacts. When you get your *.csv file, you may have to modify the tables in Excel. Create a sample contact list in Gmail with phone numbers and all the neccessary data, then export the Gmail contacts to csv using exchange format. The table structure between the Exchange server and Gmail may be slightly different. Again, in Excel make sure that your exchange.csv table names are similar to your exported gmail.csv file. Once the exchange.csv uses table names that Gmail likes, you will easily be able to import it to Gmail and all the correct data will be in it's proper place. It is okay to delete empty tables.
hello, I'm switching from my beloved touch pro to the nexus one, but don't want to manually put all of my contacts to my new phone. is there a way for me to export all my contacts from windows myphone contacts to google and to the nexus. i tried just importing my contacts through my live account, but that only pulled the email contacts and not all of my phone contacts. I'll take forever to do it manually, and if I save them to my sim, I'll lose a lot of info. any help? I'm lost at this point.
I looked for a solution to this for a days. The best solution is http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/migrate/how-does-it-work- up to now.
thanks. looks like exactly what I was looking for. I'll give it a try and report back.
I found that installing Google Mobile App on my Touch Diamond2 synced all my contacts to my Google Account and therefore automatically appeared on my N1.

There's many ways of doing this....
If any of these apply you can try any of these...
First you can just import them using bluetooth I'm sure. You could just 'mark all' or select all your contacts in your phone book on your phone and just send them using bluetooth to the nexus.
You could also import them into Outlook express and save them as a file and import them into gmail under contacts in gmail.
Or you could set up an extra gmail account and sync your phone's contacts to that account using Google sync and then export those contacts as a file and import them back into your main gmail account or keep them there and use that account to sync with your nexus.
Sorry for making it sound confusing but I'm coming off a symbian S60 V5... I know there's many ways of doing this
I dropped my HTC Touch Diamond down a storm drain, so I'm replacing it with the HTC EVO. My phone synced a day or 2 before, so I have all of my contacts online with Microsoft My Phone. I see no "export" option anywhere on the page. Any help/suggestions for retrieving and importing into the new phone?
I think the easiest way is to set up your gmail account as an exchange account on your Windows Mobile phone and set it to sync mail and contacts.
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
Then once you set up your N1, your contacts will sync automatically. I love this feature from Google as much as any other. You will never lose your contacts again, no matter what happens to your phone. Also, you can edit and add contacts in your gmail account online and they automatically appear on your phone.
DejaOffice will sync your Nexus contacts to Outlook via USB without going through the google cloud.
Is there a solution for exporting contacts from myPhone? I have broken my TD2 and my TD1 so I can't use that to sync the contacts to the phone and export them. If I could I would probably sync all my old text messages as well.
I am embarking on an approx 30 min task of copying and pasting all my 400 contacts from MyPhone to excel then I can import them. At least I get to tidy up my contacts and remove any duplicates.

This was great.. man u really helped me out..
I have a little problem. I just found out my contacts are corrupted after I tested a contact management application. Unfortunately, I only found out after some days, and after the contacts had been synchronized back to google.
The good news - I have a couple of nandroids and some titanium backups made before the contacts got corrupted. I can get back to the correct version.
The bad news - as soon as the phone syncs with google, the contacts get overwritten with the corrupted ones. I even tried clearing google contacts, and syncing, and all that got me was a empty contacts list both in google and the phone.
What I need - a way to force overwriting google contacts with the restored backup. I know I probably could go opening and updating each contact one by one (adding a space on the name or something like it) and that could work, tricking the synchronization engine to prefer the phone contacts to the google version, but I have over 600 contacts, with 150 with phone numbers; I'd rather not do that by hand.
Any suggestion?
Thanks!
Try this, Get all your contacts back from the Nandroid. Don't connect the nexus to your Google account just yet, goto the contacts in N1 & click on menu button choose to export to .vcf after that copy the .vcf file to your computer. Log into your Gmail account on the computer and delete all the Gmail contacts, then choose to import .vcf file from your computer to your Gmail account, once you've managed to get the contacts imported to Gmail setup your N1 to Sync to the Gmail account. That should do it. Cheers.
Thanks, but I had already tried that - and ended doing exactly that. The problem with that solution is that you lose all your groups, favourites, and starred contacts. Now I'm backing up contacts in gmail a group at a time, so I won't have this problem again.

Bit of a pita I know but as far as I can see there's really no other way if you use Groups.

Actually, I'd try deleting all contacts off the phone once it's synched with Google (then sync again, obviously), THEN restoring the .vcf
while syncing my phone contacts with my google account, i want to keep changes made in my phone directory and over write these changes in my google account. currently it is other way round. my old contact details keep on copying in my phone when ever i sync. specially if any one has changed his address, i make this change in my phone and i want it to happen to my contacts google accounts also when i sync. but it is not happening. seek your help
After continuosly flashing my device smt I have to format so all contacs are lost,
Ususally I use the export to sd card feature to restore contacs,
I`ve tried the outlook and Kies Sync, also Google sync,
but it seems none of them is perfect, because many joined contacts and icons are lost,
Which is the best way, without using any back up Apk?
u can export ur all contacts from contacts menu...u can backup them in ur sd or sd card and copy them in ur pc and then after flashing import back the contacts......this is the best way i do.......coz in this contacts remain as same as last time.......nothing is change no pic and associated contacts of gmail and other remove.
The best was is move your contacts to your Gmail account and let them sync.
Then if you have to wipe your device you can get everything back by just entering your Gmail email address and password.

I only sync my contacts and calendar to google. Don't technically use the phone or sim at all. Every flash I add my google account again and it's all back!
That's the way to do it.
Sorry for being stupid but how do I sync my contacts to gmail

The export as stated in the second post is my way to go.

What about the joined contacts with facebook, do they come back after restore?

I use both local back up (SD ) and google sync
I prefer Google Sync .
Google sync is good, it actually can restore your contacts to early time , I backed back to SD card too but till now , I haven't use it .
Google all the way, so easy! I really can't see what the problem is!

They do in my case. Or you could try an add-on contact manager app like GOcontacts which has the capability to search for duplicate contacts and then merge.

Me too, never lost any contacts or calendar entries...
i backup phone numbers in sim and all of them in google and facebook contacts stays there as it will synch back
backup contacts to sd card.... move them to PC then export them to your gmail contacts... gmail will join same contacts.
thats it... never lose your contacts again
vCards
I often us the share option and send the contacts a vCard to my gmail, and after flashing i just go to that email and download the vCard and all my contacts are restored. The other plus in that way is that i can choose which one to sand as vCard
MyPhoneExplorer has always done it for me
1. Backup Contacts, SMS, Events
2. Installs APKs
3. File Explorer and lots more
Have never touched Kies....
I save my contacts to ext sd card

Same here, Google sync is most reliable !
try Uia backup contact
synchronising your contacts either with your google acc. or an exchange account is a very reliable solution to protect your contacts. if you setup your fon from scratch you just have to hook up to the network and get connected to your 'cloud service' - the sync function installed on your fon will do the rest in seconds / minutes.
Good day folks!
Is there any app available for importing contacts saved in a CSV file?
I recently exported my contacts to Outlook using HTC sync prior to S-OFFing.
I had also used a crappy backup tool which completely failed to restore anything
(in case you wanto know the fauly app was Backup Master, stay away)
Well, now i have the contacts in a CSV file on my SD card and i want to import the contacts to my phone book.
Tried the import through Gmail option (which i am not very keen on doing.. for obvious reasons), but even having that as a last option does not hyelp as the 'import' button does not appear in my gmail account on the mobile.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks
You could log into you gmail account on a pc, then import the contacts csv, then sync your phone contacts with your gmail account
Doing it through GMail would really be the best option
well, i did not wanto use google...
not sure if i want to voluntarily give up all my contacts...
though am quite certain they have it anyways
for anyone who may have this issue, this is what i did...
the contacts were saved in outlook...
i exported all the contacts in .vcf format to a directory on the SD card.
the stock contacts app provides an option to import contacts from memory card...
that's about it...
