[GUIDE]Backup Swype dictionary without Swype app (for upgrade) - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, as many of us know, most ROMs include different, whether entirely or only slightly, versions of swype. In my experience, I have far fewer swype glitches when I don't install my previous version of swype over the ROMs native w/ Titanium.
But, if I don't install it with Titanium, I lose my User Dictionary!!!!
Well, there are two ways about it: With Titanium Backup, or manually
Titanium
With Titanium backup, the backup procedure resumes as normal.
But, when you restore all apps and system data, make sure to uncheck swype, then proceed.
Once the restoration process is completed, once more go to Batch>restore apps and system data
At the top of this screen, you'll see 3 radio buttons : All Apps +Data, All Apps No data, All Data no Apps
Select All Data no Apps
Restore all, with swype checked.
User dictionary should now be in place and work with the installed version of swype
Manually (my preferred method, but more advanced):
Be familiar with ABD commands and using ADB!!! If you are not, I would recommend the Titanium method.
In command prompt, type the following : adb shell
Within shell, type the following: su
Then: cp -r /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod/ /sdcard/
Your swype dictionary is now backed up to your SD card in folder /com.swype.android.inputmethod
To restore, make sure all of your Titanium backups have ran (Except for, obviously, don't install swype over the version included in the ROM)
In command prompt type: adb shell
Then: su
Then: cp -r /sdcard/com.swype.android.inputmethod /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod
Kill swype (select different input method) then relaunch it and your User Dictionary should be loaded.

Smith

Thanks, this has been driving me nuts.
[No thanks button, so I posted it]

thanks for this useful info...

Thank you so much .... this is gonna be really helpful...

are there any commands that you could do this with an installer script for a ROM? such as copy the user dictionary to the SDcard with the installer script then maybe an if doesnt exist statement in init.d to copy the backup version on boot

where can i find that path for swype beta? its because i would like to use my old swype personal dictionary and move it to swype beta.
thx

You can't use your old Swype dictionary for the new Swype beta. You have to start over. (According to the Swype website)
Edit: unless some clever individual has come up with a workaround that I'm not aware of.

Backup of Swype dictionary for Un-rooted SGS2 T-Mobile
Pardon my ignorance but is there a way to backup the Swype dictionary and potentially be able to restore it back to my SGS2 if I do a factory reset?
Am avoiding having to root my phone if all possible since I really have no need for a rooted phone.
Thanks on advance for any feedbacks.
Regards.

Any particular permissions required on the directory for this to work? I've restored the folder successfully, but it's not restoring my dictionary.

Market and installed apps

Hello,
There is a way for Market to recognize the reinstalled app from a backup?
I've upgrade my dream to CM5.0.7 and reinstalled the app that i had previously backupped, but Market don't recognized the app, why?
Any idea before i re-dowloading my 100 apps....
TIA
Idk
Its to do with the markek's database file not having your apps on it.
If you didn't back it up then you have a problem.
You could try Titanium Backup, as if you have donated you get something called market doctor which might help you, I suggest you email the developer and ask if titanium backup will restore market links without the original market.db file.
Or if you have a nandroid/BART of your old ROM, then it makes things easier.
Make a new nandroid/BART (I prefer BART on Amon's 1.7.0 in terminal, by typing utility in the recovery terminal) of CM5.0.7.
Then restore the backup of your previous ROM.
Then install either Titanium Backup, or Backup For Root Users, or you could do it manually.
With Titanium Backup do a full backup including system, deselect stuff that is red, as you don't need it and it might interfere with CM5.0.7
With Backup For Root select what you need and the one that says market links, or something like that.
Or to do it manually, you will need to either use terminal or ADB to copy/pull the market database file, I don't know what file it is, but I think its
/data/data/com.android.vending/databases\assets.db
then just paste it back when you restore CM.

[HowTo] Remove preinstalled apps - no need to flash custom roms or gold card root!

I know there are some people like myself who actually like Sense and doing a 'full' root can be daunting, especailly if all you want to do is remove the crud that Vodafone or your Telco install on your branded Legend. But there is no reason this can't be used to remove apps that are in a custom ROM - as far as I am aware! If someone with a custom ROM could confirm this, that would be great!
Righto, as per usual here is the disclaimer - doing this is risky and you do so at your own peril! Don't come crying to me or Paul @ MoDaCo if it bricks your phone (it shouldn't but this is just a warning)
Enough of that you get the idea Now for the fun bit!
First if you are not you'll need VISIONary+ from MoDaCo, at the time of this writing r13 is the latest and is available on page 7.
Please read and check the original post as there may be an updated version. If you are rooted skip to the next step.
This is Paul's guide he done quickly on his G2, it's more of a pictorial guide (same rules apply to the Legend as G2 in this case).
Once installed use the Temproot option, this can take 15 seconds or so to complete, use a Terminal Emulator and type su then return/enter and your $ should change to a # - this means you have temproot.
Go to the market and install SuperUser, Titanium Backup, BusyBox.
Open Titanium Backup allowing it root access when prompted, go to Backup/Restore and scroll to find one of the preinstalled bloatware apps, I chose the Vodafone Music app and the Vodafone Web app.
Long hold on the app you want to remove and scroll down a bit and choose the option "Force remove app (by recovery exploit)"
This will reboot your phone TWICE, you will get the recovery screen up - LET IT RUN IT's COURSE! DO NOT INTERRUPT THIS.
Once it boots back into your normal check that the app is no longer in your App drawer
Repeat for all the Apps that came preinstalled that you don't want, just be careful you don't remove anything that may still be needed!
A huge thanks to Paul at MoDaCo for this ingenious hack and the Titanium Backup, BusyBox and SuperUser developers for their hard work in writing their apps which also allow us to easy do this
Oh and you can use the Temproot on boot to have a sortof but not fully permaroot
Great work. I'll try on CM 6.1 RC1. One thing though...If I'm rooted I presume I need only the Titanium backup not VISIONary or other tools, right?
Yes you need the other apps, but you can remove them afterwards if you want. You'll need SuperUser to be able to grant Titanium Backup access, and Titanium Backup requires BusyBox to be installed - Titanium Backup gives you the option to install BusyBox if you press the 'Problems?' button under the Overview tab.
PS: you can use the free version of Titanium Backup for this exercise.
Yes, thank you. I knew about busybox and the option to install it from Titanium. SuperUser I have it already since I'm using CyanogenMod RC1 and it is included in the ROM (I think it is OK like this). So only Titanium (+busybox) needs to be installed.
I'll give it a try and let you know the results. I'll try to remove a rather large application (for ex Google Maps) and I'll install it afterward on the sdcard (since it is system appl, it cannot be moved directly to sdcard)
Later edit: IT WORKS! So I've tried to (and succeeded) remove 2 "system" applications: Google Maps and Calculator. Both were removed and the free space is now available (before 80 Mb free, after 91.2 Mb free).
There was only one issue with Maps, the icon still showed up in the application drawer and it was working (even after going through all above). After several checks I found the reason. The Maps were installed twice...the version included in the CM ROM (that was deleted by this procedure) AND the updated Maps (it once asked for upgrading the application from the market and I did that). After removing the "system installed" version of Google Maps, the "updates" remained. I went to Settings-Applications-Manage Applications and I found Maps there. I've uninstalled the updates then rebooted the phone. After that the icon was gone completely.
To conclude, for CM ROMS (or for all phones that are already rooted and have already the SU application), the steps to be performed for removing a system appl are:
1. Install Titanium Backup
2. Press (as instructed) "Problems" button. This will install a working version of busybox.
3. Check if the application you want to remove, has also updates (from Market or some other places) installed. If YES, go to Settings-Applications-Manage Applications and uninstall all the updates.
4. Start Titanium Backup and perform the steps indicated in the first post by TheLegendaryJay.
So it is working on custom ROM's as well and you don't need VISIONary or other application/tools.
All credits go to Paul, CM team and this whole community, the ones which made such things possible for our phones. TheLegendaryJay, thank you also for sharing this with us. Perhaps for rooted phones it is easier to remove applications with adb commands, but some are maybe not so technical to install the SDK or know how to use it (I can be counted as one of them), or they just might want to remove an application when they don't have a pc with SDK nearby.
yap, can confirm this. works great on cm 6.1 rc1. thanks for the hint
For you guys who are rooted - why not just flash the overlay filesystem patch, enable it, and then use any file explorer and go to /system/app/ and delete the apps you dont want? just a tip, it's much easier.. (and takes less time)
Because one of the reasons for which I wanted to rip out an application from the ROM is to gain some more space... By using overlay system, as I understood, you're practically duplicate the whole system to make it accessible for writing so I don't know if you gain some more space. Eventually you'll have less. Or, if that space is on the sdcard, that does not suit me also cause as I know, is working slower from there. Anyhow, I don't want to detail this here cause we'll be off-topic.

As I understand it, the system folder is only linked so the phone believes it's on the SD-card. This should mean, no extra space is taken (except for the few kB that makes this possible). i could be wrong, but I use system overlay and I see no whatsoever decrease in performance. Not in benchmarks nor in usage.
If you are rooted - and dont want system overlay, I still think there is a better wway - ADB! just mount system, cd to system/app, ls it and rm whatever apps ypu dont want.. no need for multiple reboots - quick and effective
adb way might be quicker but it might prove to be ineffective (at least for me it was). In order to remove an application, you must check its filename (with ls command). I've tried to remove Facebook and Twitter applications using adb remove and guess what...they're still there. I admit I might have done something wrong, what I'm saying is that through this new method described above, someone is able to remove an appl by chosing it from a list. For the ones that don't feel so confortable using adb, this is an alternative

When it comes to ADB, you must write the filename exactly as it is, if you want to remove Facebook.apk you must rm Facebook.apk, not facebook.apk or just rm Facebook*
What I do, I ls all files, copy the filenames I want to remove into into a txt file. ex. "rm facebook.apk Torch.apk voiceDialer.apk AndroidTerm.apk" and so on. When I flash a new rom, i just copy that file string and remove em all with that one command ofc. I ls it after and check if there is anything new I want to remove, but I get rid of most of it in a few seconds. (good tip!)
I understood that. Now I've checked again and I know what happened...the same thing I said above. The appl was removed also with adb command but the updates of that appl were not. I've removed the updates from Settings and after that the whole appl was gone (Facebook in this case). So both metods work, everyone can choose what he likes more
Anyway this was much more to test if it's working on custom ROMs as was asked by TheLegendaryJay and less as of providing an alternate way for rooted owners.

You both are wrong. Overlay is just an overlay... it uses several file systems or parts of file systems (directories, files), merge them and show them to us as one new merged file system. The principle is such that if U have one read-only and one read-write file system merged together, all writes are then performed to that read-write one. If you'd like to delete one file from read-only portion, that action is noted on read-write portion and your system doesn't t see that file again through merged file system whereas it is in fact still there...

thanks for this, great info. Now I'm glad I use adb and not file overlay for removing files
Why's that? Overlay is really handy thing for testing... U can make the system think that the file is not there but in fact is. If something goes wrong (boot loop) because of that, U just disable overlay and U R back on with origial state. After U are satisfied with changes, U can merge those changes into read-only file system via recovery mode.
Sent from my HTC Legend
BlaY0, you're totally right. Overlay is a great thing for testing (and by the way many thanks you for what you did). But if you're not a tester, just an enthusiast who look for new stuff for his phone, overlay could be much more than he needs.
I'm looking for example to have as much free space in memory as possible. REAL free space. If I'm using overlay, that will not be gained right? The read only files will still be there, only the overlay will show them "deleted". So...what I'm doing instead is that I'm flashing one of the existing ROMs (as per my preferences - CM 6.1 RC1 for ex.) that will not "brick" my phone, I customize it with widgets and applications as I like, than I start deleting what I don't need. For sure I can use overlay for that, but I can do it also without it. This topic presented an alternative for doing that, to the known adb commands. Also from what I've understood, the method in this topic is more aimed to the ones that are not (or don't want to be) rooted. And for those, the adb method doesn't work
You sure are totally right, but then again if you deleted some apk from /system/app that is needed for some other apk and U didn't know about that, you could end up with a so called boot loop. And if this is done by some noob, the simplest way for him to restore would be to wipe and reflash the original ROM. Overay can prevent such accidents. Actually even with overlay you can save space especially where is needed the most, that's on data partition - there's no need for dex in dalvik-cache any more etc. and surely you get more free ram as that app isn't loading any more. For the system partition it actually doesn't matter if it is full in fact why it shouldn't be full. When we get our S-OFF the first thing I will do is to rearange mtd partitions shrinking system and extending data coz now I have like nearly 50 MB free on system partition that I can not use wisely.

Thanks, VF music and web app not banished from my Legend
Okay, I must be doing something wrong, but I have no idea what. I have the same ROM as Rapier on my Desire, I have Titanium Backup and I did everything he said above. The pre-installed apps are uninstalled with TB (Car app, News and Weather, Facebook, Twitter, Google Voice, Maps, Quickoffice 2.0 which I have no idea what really is), I clear the Dalvik cache and many mega are freed. Then if I reboot, they're back. Like nothing happened.
Do you have any idea or should I give more details? Thanks for the help, guys.
Have you checked also if those applications you're removing do not have some updates installed? Because if they do, you'll get them back on the phone. First remove the updates from each application (from normal "Application" management), then remove the application residing in system with TB.
PS. QuickOffice is a suite program similar with MS Office, that allows you to read (and in the paid version also to write) office documents (.doc, .xls, .ppt...etc)
Thank you for your quick reply.
Yes, I have checked and uninstalled all updates. They are all with the basic version.
About Quickoffice, I know what it is It's just that the one that came with CM 6.1.0 RC1 cannot be accessed, it can only be used to open supported file formats (I just found out after posting here ). I'd prefer the normal Quickoffice with which I can access my dropbox and Google docs too, that's why I wanted to uninstall this in the first place.

You will have to remove it via Titanium Backup. If it still fails to install the APK you'll have to manually log into via adb (or use a terminal emulator) and remove the following:
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
That should do the trick. I've just installed a 2.6.x today on my Cappy and it's very nice.
Hi:
I tried to remove via Titanium, that did not work. So, I used Root Explorer and deleted the 2 files. Install was still unsuccessful. So, I used ADB to try to remove, and it says No such file or directory.
Even though I had Swype backed up with Titanium, it will not allow me to restore it, and I am completely unable to install a newer version.
I have searched and can't seem to find the stock Captivate Swype to try to reinstall it.
Any suggestions? I am desperate.
Thanks!

Not a problem...glad it worked. Sometimes people make things more difficult than they need be.
Could somebody post a short step-by-step on how to do this?
I need some help.
I used root explorer to look for the
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
files.
I found the libSwypecore file, but i didn't have any Swype files in /system/apps.
I deleted that file after uninstalling Swype using Titanium Backup. No success and I'm confused about what you mean by copying over the files using with root explorer. When I try to install my new version of swype, it asks if I would like to still install it since it's a system app (I'm guessing Swype is still recognized as part of the system). Then...it says it's unsuccessful.
Also, I can't restore for some reason since Titanium Backup doesn't have the option anymore
Where do you go to download the new Swype?
I have 2.4 currently.

I believe the beta is 2.10. I haven't found an easy way to download 2.10 as it is only made available to Sywpe beta users and they aren't taking any more applicants at the moment.

I've downloaded a modified version somewhere and I deleted system/lib/libSwypeCore.so and also deleted the other two swype components via TiBu. Rebooted and installed the 2.10 apk fine
Also di11igaf's 2.0.1 rom has swype 2.10 in it
So, I uninstalled with Titanium Backup, deleted /system/lib/Swypecore.so. Rebooted my phone
Now, when i try to install the new Swype version, it initially says
"Replace application
The application you are installing will replace another application. All previous user data will be saved."
Ok and Cancel are my two options
I choose Ok of course, try installing and it says Application not installed.
From what I can tell, it seems like the stock Swype is somehow still recognized?
Edit: Nevermind, I got it working. I pushed/copied the files over.
Installed swype 1.60 version (many language packs including Dutch that I needed) by using the copy paste method. Uninstalling via titanium and removing any swype trace and then trying to install it by tapping the .apk didn't work, it just said install not succesful. Sideloading it via Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine gave me an error stating I did not have enough space (i have more than enough), oh well, at least the copy paste method worked. Renamed the 1.60 swype file to Swype.apk and put it in system/app/ and rebooted and worked... Thanks for the help, can finally (looked for a long time) now swype in dutch!
I tried to install and failed
Everybody here talks about "I copied over and it worked"
What do you copy and over what? Could you be more specific?
Just google swype beta and sign up for it and follow the instructions there.
Hi:
Does anyone have the original swype version found on the captivate? I updated it to a newer version some time ago, with help from this thread, but now (starting today) I am getting a message saying that my trial is over, and the "swype" feature is no longer working.
Please help.
Thanks!
UPDATE: I have found several other versions of swype, and uninstalled, and installed several. I seem to be having the same results. They all install, but the"swype" feature doesn't work, only regular typing works. I still have not found the original Captivate version.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again!
UPDATE: Okay, so I uninstalled all Swype using Titanium, then I went to the Swype website, signed up for the beta, and installed. Voila, it's working perfectly now I just hope this version doesn't eventually give the trial is exipred version eventually.

Ok, I managed to get rid of the built in Swype and replaced with the latest Swype beta.
Currently it's version Swype v2.10.52.13753 iirc. You should be able to find it with Google.
Also, u need Titanium Backup or SystemApp Remover, or whatever app you know can uninstall system apps. A filemanager that can delete system files is also needed, like Root Explorer.
I'm using Titanium Backup (the free version should be work fine).
1) First change to another keyboard to be safe.
2) Press the Backup/Restore tab at the top, scroll to Swype. Click on it.
3) To be safe, make a backup of Swype. Then Wipe Data and Delete it. It should be dimmed and marked out after deletion.
4) Using Root Explorer, delete \system\lib\libSwypeCore.so. To be safe, make a copy of it to ur sdcard in case anything goes south.
5) Reboot.
6) Now you should be able to install the latest Swype beta without any problems, you will need to enable it in settings after that to use it.
Did not experience any force closes or quirks so far....hope it works for u guys too. In case of any problems, going backwards to restore libSwypeCore.so and Swype via Titanium Backup shouldn't be too hard.

Your method worked perfectly for me! Thanks a lot! Im using it on a i9003 btw...
Seems good to use, like the voice input on this though! Comes in so handy, the pre-installed one didn't have this feature... So far so good, Only I prefered the darker color of the original one, Can this be themed?
another way good for noobs like me....
I managed to get the most current release version working in a more elementary fashion:
1. Uninstall swype as described in previous posts
2. Go to beta.swype.com
3. Register for the download
4. Follow the install guide beta.swype.com/android/welcome/detailed/
Note: make sure you have the standard android internet browser set as your default before following the email link, if it isn't, the download won't work and you will have to delete/uninstall all swype related files again. To set the browser default, go to settings/applications/manage apps/ then scroll to your current browser (for me skyfire), click on it and then select 'clear default'
And after completing all the prompts in the install guide, all should be good! Latest version 3.6.84.26668.t100.26701 just installed and working great for me. Hope this helps, and enjoy not having that freakin irritational "hidden word" tip ever again!

[Q] Swype Update for Galaxy S

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if this will make sense, but I am planning to remove the default swype keyboard on my SGS i9000 and install a beta one since Swype has opened up their doors for new beta testers. However, after registering and running SwypeInstaller, I was told by it that I need to remove the Swype first on my SGS--which I can't since it's a system application. So I installed Titanium Backup Pro and froze it then re-ran the Swype Installer. And of course it doesn't install since I cannot overwrite system apps.
In short, I'm now under the dilemma of removing the default Samsung Swype which I couldn't get back unless I reflash a stock firmware or keeping it and not installing the Beta Swype. I think the beta swype is more updated (I've ran it on my x10).
Is there any other way to update the Swype in our SGS?
Thanks.
you need to be rooted, connect with adb and do
rm /system/app/Swype.apk
rm /system/app/Swype.odex
rm /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
reboot
Thanks. My SGS is rooted and all, but i'm not sure I'm up for some ADB action yet. In case I use Titanium Backup to remove it or use Root Explorer, will it work?
titanium won't remove the lib, in root explorer you can delete the 3 files. but honestly adb is a lot quicker imho
Hey, should I back up those files first before deleting them? Thanks.
I installed the new beta on my Galaxy S, but it just forced closed. This may be due to the fact that I couldn't remove the lib file though.
Also I restarted after remove the old one by using Titanium Backup, but when ever an application got focus it force closed. After restarting that fixed up.
I couldn't restore the old version of Swype, so I had to reflash to get it back.
Hopefully we'll get the self updating Swype soon .

Can you tell me how to mount /system as RW in adb?
I am only able to access in RO
EDIT: i managed to get to system in RW mode after rebooting to CWM recovery. I guess this is the only way?
Use sgs tools to remove it, you can find it in the market.

Ahh good tip - worked nicely!
However - now I can't get Swype to install!
I'm officially on the beta, so am using the installer rather than trying to sideload an apk.
But at some point it prompts me to authorise its installation, saying "this is a system application - are you sure you want to replace it?" - although I've removed (in theory) the system version of swype.
Any ideas?
I'm having the same issue... tried deleting all the files associated with swype using root explorer, no luck...

This really sucks.
I'm a new SGS user and all this rooting and ADB stuff is quite beyond me. All I want is a simple way to update Swype that came pre-installed and apparently that is not possible.
