Hello all,
I just got home from work, and to my surprise my NC wouldn't wake up, and pressing the power button did nothing. This was extra surprising since it was fully charged when I went to bed last night...
After plugging in the AC adaptor I got a message on the screen saying "Battery too low to power ON. Wait 15 minutes and try again". After about 10 minutes it powered on, and the battery widget said 12%.
Any thoughts on what the heck happened?? Up to this point, it's been working pretty much flawlessly, and only losing a few %s of battery each night.
BTW, it's a rooted 1.0.0 version.
My guess is that you had some process that was sucking up the CPU. I had this happen once with a turn by turn Navigator (obviously not your issue). Of course the power down killed the process and it did not happen again until days later.
What were you running last night? Did you install anything new?

A few apps updated but I didn't install anything new. I'll be keeping a closer eye on it tonight and tomorrow, though.

Do you have a task killer installed? They can sometimes result in strange kill/restart scenarios.
Wallswitcher for me twice has had an error switching wallpapers, and when this happens it pops up a dialog informing me and then proceeds to sit there forever with the screen on. However, in this case I see around 4%/hr usage.
Maybe something similar happened, except with heavier CPU, higher backlight, etc.
I was playing around trying to see what still worked of the original B&N stuff after I rooted and I started the app that reads a book to kids. That app did not turn off when I killed the screen. It drained my battery fast. I don't know if this is just on my NC or others, but it's worth looking at. Check Nook Color Tools/Settings/Battery Use.

Are you referring to the Fava Book Reader or something? Mine doesn't die either. I have to manually kill it and yes, it drains my battery.

Yep! I could not remember the name of the app, but that's it.

Hi, I've had my wizard for about 6 months, and I've used 3-4 different roms. The one I'm currently using is:
Rom 2.24.10.2
Extrom 2.25.11.102
It's from the summiter rom with the installer, I've been using it for about two weeks.
For some reason, once I switched to this rom, I've have really terrible life, and for some reason, whenever it's left alone, for a long period of time, it won't wake up from a sleep state. For example, last night I had charged it to 100%, used it for about a 10 minute conversation, then went to sleep and left it on my desk, right by my bed. This was at about 1am. When I woke up at 9am, it was asleep, flashing a red led, and wouldn't wake up. I had to remove the battery and put it back on to get it to reset. What's more, when I got it restarted it 1) Gave me the very low battery warning, as the battery was showing 4% and 2) Started to perform a backup, which means it screwed up before 4am, as that's when I have it set to backup.
Any ideas? I'm about to flash to a new rom I guess, but I'm getting tired of installing and reinstalling everything. I'm not using any new software, I'm using the same programs I've been running for months.
It just did it again

Use Sprite Backup - it will most probably able to restore your backup made under a different ROM version in Device Upgrade mode. Please see the Backup Bible ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1270&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ) for more info.
I have the same thing happening and I almost want to go back to my Treo. I love this phone but I need to figure out this problem. As far as I can tell, the screen back light goes off but the phone stays on. This kills the battery over night. A quick glance at the phone in passing and it *looks* like the screen is off, but it's not. I have checked all the settings and they say the phone should power off after 2 min. Sometimes it does, and somtimes it dosen't. Under the power settings I have it set to turn off device if not used for 2 minutes.
I'm on ROM 2.17.7.2 WWE if that helps anyone.

Yeah, I know it's possible, but I've also tried it before and had it lock my phone and I had to manually put it in bootloader and redo the ROM install. I'd rather not take a chance again.

Yeah, that's what it seems like, the screen will go off, but something is draining the battery really rapidly.
For me, it is only the back light going off. The screen is still on. Turn it at the right angle and you can see it is still on. A quick glance and it looks to be off. That is what kills the battery over night for me. I just can't stop it from happening.

You should be able to change that under the battery settings.
I tried that. Under advanced I have it set to turn off if not used for 2 min.
I think it may have something to do with Mortplayer. That is the one app I use almost daily that turns off the back light but keeps running.

Strange. My screen is going completely off, but the battery is going down like I've got Wifi and bluetooth on and I'm watching a movie.
Hello all.
I bought a Nexus One in at the beginning of the year. It's not rooted and I've had no problems from it till this month. I can not say the timing is exactly this, but it seems the battery issues started just after the FRG83D upgrade. I am accustomed to using my phone for most of the day before it needs to be charged. 12 hours or more with moderate use. Since around the FRG83D update my battery is about dead in around 4 or 5 hours. I haven't changed any settings or gotten any new apps or anything for quite some time.
For example, Friday night I charged my phone to 100% and then unplugged it (to plug in my girlfriends phone) and went to bed (about midnight). At 5:15am my alarm went off, i glanced at my phone and found the batter was at 10%!! the phone had been sitting there doing nothing all night with the screen off. I checked the battery use screen and it showed cell standby and AKMD taking up all the battery (55% and 35% respectively). I should mention that I have full signal where I am and have never had an issue. I cut off the screen rotate in the settings just in case that was part of it (AKMD being the gsensor i believe).
At next full charge that day i noticed the same problem, after being at 100% my battery was down to 10% after about 5 hours, almost the entire time I didn't use the phone. This time "display" was the largest percent by far (followed by cell standby), but clicking it showed only 15 minutes of use time for the display as I had purposefully not messed with the phone much.
Last night I had to be out and a bout so I decided to test things again. Charged full and cut airplane mode on. about 4 hours later my phone was down to 20ish percent, the only use of the phone being me looking at the charge level a couple times through the night.
I installed "spare parts" app and it shows my battery as being in good health and such but who knows how reliable that is.
Anyone else having similar issues? Any suggested remediation measures? I'm considering flashing the phone and reinstalling apps and such but would rather avoid that having never done that before and not having a desire to deal with setting everything back the way I have it.
Don't know if it matters but I run LauncherPRO and I do use the friends widget but it's never seemed to really cause battery issues before. I also run the news/weather widget, but again, no previous problems.
Any help would be great
Thanks!
In the spare parts app check partial wake usage. See if any apps are not letting your phone sleep.
nothing stands out other than UID 10073 which is handcent. currently my phone is charging but I'll pop it off the charger soon and watch the battery drop time again. I should note that inbetween all the tests so far i've rebooted the device so hanging apps of any kind should be killed off...
What ROM are you using?
Are you using Extended Controls? There is an issue with that and FRG83D. Uninstall it until the dev sorts it out.
yeah i am using extended controls. i'll take it off and see what happens.
Me too
I Have exactly the same issue, also have extended controls. Uninstalled and waiting to see if that works.
Cheers for the suggestion.
That did the trick! Loss like extended controls was the problem. A shame as i really like that app. Will hope they update and fix soon. Thanks!

I think it was updated again today. Now v5.03, and it seems to work properly.
So nobody saw Extended Controls showing up in Spare Parts, System Panel or other such programs?
So, the title says it all. All of you guys using your Nook as a "Tablet" what kind of battery life are you getting?
The draw for the Nook for me was as a reader. I travel a good bit for work and carrying books sucks. But, I'm an android fanboy and the more I look into this device the more I like it as a "cheap" tablet.
But, in the end, I'll use it a LOT for reading and battery life is an issue to be concerned about. So, what are you guys experiencing?
I use mine all day at work for music/web (8+ hours)
then at home for another couple hours.
So probably 10+ hours on a charge. I turn down the brightness because it doesn't need much.
Jason
Yeah, easily lots of usage all day, moderate usage for two days. Probably longer, but I'm playing with it a lot.. also I'm figuring out something weird, I keep finding mine ON for no reason... I think I have an errant program. I've been installing a lot of crap on it, so no surprise..
It does bug me a bit that "Cellular" and "Dialer" show up high in the list for CPU and Battery usage. I should look to see if that's something that can be disabled, it must be using some battery if it's BY FAR the top in the list on Spare Parts and always the top CPU user in System Panel.
Until we get an overclocked kernel the battery life will be roughly the same as stock...

Ack, yeah, I forgot about that. Way back when I had a Pandigitial Novel (four days ago), I had found a remedy for the non-existent cellular service eating up battery -- remove the TelephonyProvider.apk from /system/app. They did that when Cyanogen came out for the G-Tablet. (source: http://um1nex.nl/?p=14666)
Removing the "Phone.apk" freaks out the log, though...so something seems to depend on that.
I just renamed/removed TelophonyProvider.apk on my Nook Color so I can see what happens. It rebooted ok. So far, so good...

Standby is amazing. Went from 99% to 96% in 8 hours!
So far with heavy usage and full brightness i say around 8 hours. I can't stop fiddling with this thing!
Te best part is that you rarely need the screen at more than half because it is so bright!
I have been able to get two days of decent use out of a charge, and that ha been a few angry birds sessions in there, too.

Sweet. I did this last night and today the NC has been mainly idle, poked into it a dozen or so times doing misc stuff but mostly unused.. Cleaning up before the holidays... Anywho, in 5 hours it lost 2% of battery, and no more Dialer wake lock. Highest is Android System now, which could be anything.. but it doesn't appear to be TOO big a deal. Uptime Widget has a "wake time" and "wake percent" mode, and it's reporting 15-20% wake percent (which does include the time I've actually been using it), so that's not too bad... Compared to like 70-80% before anyway.
I have yet to see any problems, but again, I haven't used it much today.. I'm going to bang around later today to make sure I don't see any weirdness.
Sorry guys, but I'm new.
When I try to rename TelephonyProvider.apk or Phone.apk, it says <Insufficient priveleges or rights>, something like that.
What do I need to do to get in there?

You just need to have root access. You may need to "su" (super user) first.
Mine is root by default, but I used autonooter. If you don't have su, perhaps the z4root app is in your future...

I've found my Nook Color three times awake when it shouldn't be... At least two of those times I had unplugged it from the charger and hadn't opened it up at all, just basically unplugged it and took it with me to work. The third time I'm not sure, but seems like it just happened in the middle of the day for no reason.
I've also found my wifes NC doing this, except hers I found the battery was dead.
Anyone else seeing this happen?

Yes, I had the same problem which caused mine to completely run down the battery this past weekend and as luck would have it I did not have my charger with me for the entire weekend.
But I had seen it on before when taking it out of my bag after traveling and knew that it was being caused by the fact that I had changed the wifi sleep in "spare parts" from Android default to Never.
Not sure if that is what is causing this issue for you, but you may want to take a look and see what your current wifi sleep setting are.
I changed it back and have not had that problem for that past couple of days.
I've had this happen a few times. My defense against this is to manually lock it before putting it down, or into a bag.

Yeah, this seems to be a workaround.. Open the cover (mine lives in its cover), unplug, unlock, then turn off the screen. Seems good then. Just seems like that initial screen on when power is unplugged makes it stay awake sometimes.
I've also noticed something, although unrelated to this I think... When plugged in the device is always awake, even with the screen off. The Uptime widget has a "Wake on" or "Wake Percent" widget as well, and it's awake the entire time it's plugged in. Ah well.
Well I finally realized what was causing my Nook to wake up in the middle of the night sometimes and not go back to sleep; Titanium Backup! I had scheduled it to back up Wed/Sun at 3am, and sure enough the last two times it woke up and subsequently died overnight was at that time.
There is a preference to change the behavior of sleep during operations called WakeLocks Mode, so I've tried the "CPU Awake" vs "Screen awake" option just to see what happens.
So hopefully that helps, and at least I know what the deal is now. If the options in Ti Backup won't fix the issue I'll ask the developer, he might be able to to do something.
EDIT: Yep, this did fix the problem. No waking up to dead Nook Colors in the house anymore now.
The battery life on my NC is absolutely horrible. I average 3 hours unplugged, 1 hour if I'm using it. It doesn't seem to charge up all the way -- after plugging it in the light on the Nook cord is orange for about 10 minutes then goes green even though the screen still stays "Not enough power to turn on - Try again in 15 minutes".
I've tried using software like juicedefender and other battery mon apps that are supposed to be able to predict when you're going to lose your power -- but they appear to be useless. Often I'll get the "Your Battery is Getting Low" message at the very same time as the "Shutting Down" dialog appears -- almost like there was a very sudden dramatic drop in available power.
I am beginning to wonder if it's the result of faulty hardware.
Has anyone else experienced problems like these? Or should I restore back to stock and send it in for warranty?
That definitely sounds abnormal. I'd probably restore it back to factory and if it's still acting like that, you'll know it's not due to any modifications.
Yeah, I second that. Mine drains pretty quickly, I go from 100% to about 60% in a day with normal usage. I use Wifi Auto Toggle to turn Wifi off when the screen turns off. So far I have to recharge every other day or so. But what the OP has going on sounds pretty extreme.
What ROM are you using?
What programs have 'keep screen alive' do you run?
How bright is your screen?
Screen/wifi burn most of the power in this - so minimizing them helps battery life considerably.
I had one game (HexDefense) that prefers to run in maximum brightness and burned through the battery very quickly. Nook was the warmest I've ever seen it and the temperature on my battery monitor actually moved for the first time ever.
SO if you're getting 3 hours doing nothing, that's bad. If you're getting 3 hours running a really processor/graphic intensive game, that's good.
If you can get it back to stock and still have low battery life, consider talking to the manufacturers about it.
