i have the DX and somewhat knowledgeable about ROMs and perks of each. unfortunately i am not too sure how the D1 and different ROMS would work since the radio is on Metro vs the standard Verizon that this phone is built on.
so my question is, which ROMs will work for her phone. also, will i be able to install any ROM i want without loosing the flash to Metro that i had to pay for and drive an hour out of town to get done?
this is my only concern is that whatever i install will break the flash and i do NOT want to screw this up.
i am seeing a lot of Camera application freezes and becoming a nucence. would it be just as easy to reinstall the Camera apk or is installing a different ROM even an option?
thanks for your support guys and gals. . . cheers
i say still try and root, flash a rom. i just flashed cy 6.1.2 stable. and i am going tomorrow to get metro flashed. but i say flash it cause you can allways re flash the stock .sbf and move on wit no problems.
but also did u flash metro or did you go pay to get it done. cause im tryna figure out how to do it myself. cause those guys had to learn it somewhere you feel me. so if you kno how please shoot me the steps so i can do mine. thanks in advance bro and hope you get it flashed.
i paid 50 bucks to get it done. at that price, why not. plus i have no time with a 5 month old baby. seems to be running ok though.
here is a link someone sent me that might help you out...
just asking, why do you think you can sbf it and re root and install custom ROM and it will still work on Metro? when you flash a phone to work on this provider, dont you change a bunch of things on the phone in order to make it work? i dont know how to do any of that and if i screwed up this phone and the wife was without it, she would flip out. i am sure you can appreciate that.
with that said, i would like to know if reinstalling the camera.apk would fix any problems.
maybe i will install Launcher Pro tonight for her vs ADW and see what happens. this isnt going to change the way the phone works.. only the way it looks.
just called some random person on Craigslist and they said there is only a few ROM's out there that will work with the Metro PCS.
is this true?
i would love to get her off this ROM, she has called me 3 times today complaining about the freezing and rebooting randomly. i would be upset too..
a little help please.

I'm new to the PPC world, my 8125 gets here today or tomorrow and I've been looking into programs and all that I can do to optimize my experience with it. But given I don't have the phone yet and am a total newb regarding this, I was wondering, what are the first things I need to do to improve my PPC and get software/freeware onto it? Like can I just download the apps onto the device or storage card and install them or is there something I overlooked? Just tryna figure out what to do and what NOT to do... an overall list of must-have apps (freeware or not) would be nice to have too if someone's kind enough.
Anyways, thanks a lot and I'm pretty hyped about getting the phone and playing around with it
This could be a starting point, pretty comprehensive and well organised:

Rest you will figure out once you start using it. All the best.
cool, thanks for the help but i dont just want an app list, i want to know like what are the first things you should do to get ready for smooth operation, like (i still havent got this) wt is a/the ROM? is it something that doesnt come with the ppc and i gotta get it to be able to use something else? or does a stock one come with the ppc and im supposed to get a better one? stuff like that, cuz im like TOTALLY new to ppc, like i'll probably figure out most the stuff but I want to be safe first
I think you have been reading a lot about ROMS on this forum! Well ROM is nothing but the basic operating system on which the PPC runs most of the times these are customised by the operator you buy the phone from. So basic settings are there like GPRS, MMS, Homepage etc. You really don't need to worry about ROMs right now, first get the phone, play around, install 3rd party softwares and slowly you will figure out what is what. Keep reading the threads here, you will find a lot of knowledge from Gurus, but you gotta to be patient and read as much as you can. Because anything you try with ROM can be dangerous for the phone. You could even 'brick' it. You could even lose your warranty. So right now after you get the phone just toy around and have fun, forget ROM right now. And don't worry your phone is ready to run smoothly as it is.

YUP !!!
Very wise advise by Kull, the phone already comes with pre-installed OS (Rom) by the operator, you don't have to install it separately,it may be installed with the latest OS wm6,but even if it comes with a wm5 OS version Rom ,just use and enjoy it,get a grip of all the functions,it's hell of a device.
The Roms discussed here are mainly upgrades to wm6,which was launched later by Microsoft and the phones earlier came with wm5 Roms, therefore, people like to upgrade to wm6.It requires some procedures to unlock and upgrade with a risk of getting it Bricked,so it;s not advisable for you to consider it,as yet.ok
And ,of course, CONGRATS !!!
yh id rather stick with the OS it comes with for now but i was just wondering if i needed to upgrade anything to get some nice apps on it but nvm thnx a lot i think i might be gettin it today hopefully
Ive been a loving owner of a Tilt for quite a few months now, and have modded, changed, and added to it as much as i can. Recently ive been having a few troubles with the phone keeping a connection, so i figured i would backup things, and do a hard reset to get back to square one.
But i started looking and saw sakajati's new Hyperdragon ROM, and am now seriously tempted to flash this rom instead of just sticking with the WM 6.1 stock AT&T rom i have now. So far ive got everything i apparently need downloaded, and have read and re read the directions, faqs, and every guide on doing it to death.
My problem is i can't see to go through with the first step, i am just so worried about breaking my phone. I don't have the money to get a new one, and this one wasn't exactly cheap since i bought it out of contract. Am i just being overly paranoid?
Well, Its been said that its hard to brick your phone, but if you arent too confident you should have a techy friend handle it for you
Flashing in itself is pretty simple and easy to figure out from the wikis. Just be sure to follow all of the directions to the T. Also, to change roms, you have to use Jump-SPL to flash the Hard-SPL. Once thats on your phone it will be nearly impossible to "Brick"
haha i am the techie of all my friends. I know about using jump-spl to put on a hard-spl. Ive already got the jump-spl program on my phone, i keep getting nervous when i go to run it.
Guess i just wanted someone else to slap me in the face more or less and tell me its ok to do, even with all ive already read.
Well, i took the plunge. Already got HardSPL v3.56 on my phone, and am already more then half way through flashing the new rom. Im still rather nervous, but all is going well so far, so my hopes are high. i really can't wait to see my phone with this new rom, even if i gotta go through and get all the at&t connection settings done. Thankfully theres cabs for that
Thanks for the fast reply by the way
Well it went well I am so far fairly happy with the new rom. Only problem im having now is for some reason my phone wont get a data connection going. I have tried using the rr att settings cab, using the connection wizard, entering in the settings myself, everything i can think of. I hope that doesn't kill this rom for me.
make sure proxy is disabled
That did partially work Thanks for the advice though. Ive now moved on to try another rom. Now that i know how to do it its gettings addictive to try more of em. Onto duttys right now Already tried the new offical AT&T rom and Garmins. Hoping to find that perfect one i like the most
Way its going though i might be cooking my own since i can't find one just perfect for me.
would you mind to upload the att settings .cab mine are messed up and there site to send it is under going maintenance
DO IT! it was nervewracking at first for me (i voided my warrranty with all this good stuff just 2 hours after i got the phone xD)
i cant even tell you how many different roms i have flashed, only problems i have ever had were because of the radio, i can see the paranoia but just do it, and if you mess anything up you can always revert to the stock rom, which you can find on xda somewhere
the way i look at it is the tilt is a little old now, i got mine last december, so if i break it ill get another phone, which i am already saving up for now anyways
Sorry for the n00by question guys! I had a g1 at first and i thought it was broken so I had to get a cliq from tmobile. but i found a way to fix the g1 but i rooted it to use as my experiment phone since i got the cliq. well, after 2 weeks the cliq is starting to be a nuisance. there's "dead spots" in the touch screen because of calibration issues, it's very buggy and i just don't really like it.
sorry for the tangent, i just wanted to share the background of why i was going back to my g1 that i rooted.
so, will a tmobile rooted g1 work with the android data plan? If anyone is wondering I have the MLIGN Hero 3.3 rom on the phone, that won't affect anything will it?
p.s.
thanks so much for the help, i know that this is a very n00b question, but i greatly appreciate the help that will come from you guys.
Nope. Im pretty sure everything will stay the same.
Been switching roms for months now and havent seen any changes to my data plan
NOTHING WILL HAPPEN IF YOU SWITCH ROMS. I been switching ROMs like I will try 3 ROMs a day then use a backup to go to a stable ROM.
With some ROMs to get data you need to put in the correct APN settings so don't freak out if a ROM doesn't support t-mobile's apn for some reason.
wow thanks for quickly replying guys! i didn't check till now because i didn't think i was gonna get anything so soon. I appreciate it :] and thanks for toning down my paranoia haha.
@AndroidNoobie: thanks for letting me know about the whole APNs thing. I would ask you about it right now but i'll use the search tab first if anything pops up, thanks again!
np dude glad to help.
Hello folks, I know ill have no problems flashing the phone to a new rom (not worried about bricking it) but one thing after searching these forums I havnt found is how hard is it to go back to stock if you dont like said rom
I dont even know why I am flashing it, my phone works great, seems snappy enough but im one of those types of people that just has to toy with things.
So id just like some information for you guys first what i asked above but also why do you use custom roms does the phone work better, all I read about is apps not working? is there an added benefit to flashing?
Most important to me though is how hard and the steps to revert back to stock
Thanks alot

Well, all you need to do is download the stock RUU which will return your phone to it's original factory settings. There have been a few people who've encountered an error running this utility to retorn to stock but it has been very rare and has only affected a small percentage of the population of hero owners. Worse-case scenario, you can try and get a warranty replacement or use your TEP plan if you are enrolled in it.
I find I enjoy the phone more with a custom rom for several reasons. It feels more responsive and usable, also I am a true gadget-head and tweaking customizing and playing around with my phone is just in my nature. Android as a platform is well suited to this kind of mentality and is even encouraged.
Of course there is also the current situation we are in that we are able to run a newer version of android than what is available from the manufacturer at this time.
Then you can get into custom themes etc etc.
I have done it this time, I tried flashing a custom rom (Cynogen 10.1) and Ended up bricking it, I can get it into CWM but when I try to select anything the screen goes blank with just the image of the rom manager that is in the background and does nothing. It corrupted my SD card so recovery is not an option and Fastboot doesnt really work either. Kies doesnt recognize it neither does ODIN. I have tried just about every way to fix it that I have found and all it does is piss me off. CMD in windows does nothing. Anyone have any suggestions? Or can I just run it over with my car, I am totally sick of nexus, and the sidekick sucks just as much. So what are my options?
How about selecting with a different button? Like trackball instead of power, for example?
Nexus is super-easy to deal with and it's very hard to brick one. However, I suggest you read more to get the idea how to work with it. Fastboot is always an option, if you unlock the phone (and there is no reason to keep it locked).

Holy mother of god you make me feel like such a tard lol.... I don't really know why I didn't think of the trackball. I actually like the Nexus I was just incredibly pissed at it. But I used to track ball to flash the stock rom onto it, Now time to re-root it this time with the boot loader unlocked, and try once again. So erm it works again..... Thanks for the option that was just about the easiest one there is. Definitively going to read up on this phone. I need to for my own sanity and the knowledge of how to do things the easy way lol.
I seriously spent the last 4 hours googling and reading how to fix it and nothing worked.... Then you provided a fix that I should have caught after reading so many pages on google about it :/
You know Kies and Odin are for Samsung phones, right?
I should just stop before I get to far ahead of myself. But the posts I read about fixing this thing. A lot of them said something about using Odin. I can't figure out how to flash roms or anything on this phone. All I have accomplished is unlocking it and rooting it.
Otherwise I just don't understand hboot, blackrose, the s-off thing and or why or how I have to partition anything to install a damned custom rom. I have never had this much of a problem with any other phone than the nexus. Can't get cwm to stick and am considering buying 4ext since there is no free version I don't really have a choice. There used to be a free version but not anymore apparently.
But I have tried to flash a 250mb hboot. Which didn't work, tried to flash cm10.1 which also didn't work. I can't figure it out. I had a friend with a note that wasn't this much of a hassle either. So I am just about ready to give up. I am waiting for the iPhone to come out on T-Mobile late march and I think I'm just going to ditch android. Mainly cause it now is starting to cost money to customize these Androids cause cwm sucks and everything else you have to pay for it seems. Or stay current with the new nexus 7 or whatever. Then when you have a newer phone there is absolutely no point to rooting or flashing roms on it because the only reason for it in the first place is to increase proformance and or upgrade from the crappiest OS's like gingerbread and froyo to jellybean or ICS.
Its whatever I guess. Just too phone illiterate to be able to cope with new technologies I guess.
Hell even pulling a galaxy noteII out of a hard brick is easier than rooting and customizing these phones.

@kitsuKun, A lot of members here enjoy tinkering with their phone, including me to get the latest version of the Android OS on an old phone. It's not that we can't afford a new phone. So if you have questions, feel free to ask and don't whine

I am not trying to whine. All I am saying is I don't get the HTC. Can't figure it out. If I have questions I will ask but right now I dont, I have understood what I have read.
