Wifi GPS issue - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I'm home and my phone is connected to my wifi. The GPS locks very fast to accurate to 20 meters. That's where the problem is.
It shows the little triangle and the blue circle on Google maps. But I'm not in that blue circle!! I'm like 10 meters away from the edge of the blue circle. Anyone know how to fix this??

You can use wireless networks, gps satellites, or assisted gps for location. Each im sure has a different amount of accuracy. It might not hurt to calibrate your compass either. I think the wireless setting is for showing your location in maps and at street level. If you go to settings>location and security, you can try switching to one of the other settings but you need a sky view for the satellite setting. Only check one.

Well that's not the problem... I'm not even in the blue circle that it indicates..

Wifi location not accurate

Not really a phone issue, I know that it's with either my router or my modem (not sure how it works exactly). When I disable my GPS and put my phone on Airplane Mode (but leave Wifi on) and go into Maps, my location is incorrect. It is showing me at my old house (a few hundred miles away from where I live now). How do I go about telling whatever tracks where my router is, that it's not there anymore?
You said you turned the gps off? You have to have gps ON..lol. It is probably showing you the last location it was turned off. So turn the gps on and make sure it is receiving a signal from the birds(satellites). You cannot get a gps signal with gps off and it will not show a correct location. Wifi is for downloading the maps to show where your gps location is.

Wifi is also for location. Hence, Wifi Location. Go away until you understand the actual question.
Its not an accurate location tool, GPS is accurate the other is not.
If I turn GPS off I am usually in the middle of a field quite a way from my house, it uses the network, not WiFi (IIRC)

Google Maps not accurate

As above, I have already turned on GPS but it's still few streets away.
Any help on this?
are you out doors? also what rom are u using, some of them have broken/messed up gps
Is the GPS icon solid or blinking?
If it is blinking, then the GPS has NOT LOCKED ON!!! Means that your location is based on the CELL TOWER you are connected to!
Just wanted to throw this in...
People often have the gps off but the "Use wireless networks for my location" feature turned on....which will give you the location of the nearest cell tower to you....
If you enable gps from location...you will get your exact position...unless you are using a custom rom with buggy gps...and there are a few of them out there.

Wifi and 3g icons at the same time?

I noticed that my captivate will often show both the wifi icon and 3g icon in my screen at the same time. I am using wifi to post this but 3g still shows up. This never happened in my nexus one or milestone. This also happens on multiple wifi networks for me. Any ideas?

Some apps use your 3G connection to get a rough fix on your location (Beautiful widgets "Beautiful home" or weather bug) there's a lot more. You can usually turn that off and just put in your zipcode. I could be wrong, just a shot in the dark.
I get this too

This doesn't seem right to me. I don't get why it would have both, there is no reason for it. If I reboot my phone, it will just show one or the other but over time it creeps back to showing both. I think its a software problem.
I am also wondering about the wifi. How do you know it's using wifi instead of 3g? Does it automatically switch over to wifi whenever it connects to one?

Thats the thing, I have seen it say I am on wifi but it still shows the 3G indicator and will show 3G activity (the activity arrows on the 3G icon light up).

It might be because you have no apps trying to find your location all the time. That's why some people have 3g on sometimes with their wifi on and some don't.

Well I wish I knew what that was then, because I do have Beautiful Widgets but I also have always had geolocation disabled and have my zip code set in it.
My husband's captivate will show both wifi and 3G when he opens google maps and the only way to get ride of the 3G is to restart the phone.
I'm having the same issue and using "my settings" to disable 3G use while using wifi. Being that I'm on the very limited data plan, I'd rather not have 3G being used when it doesn't have to be. So, if there are some programs that are forcing access to 3G when I'm on wireless, I'd like to know if there's an app or somesuch that will track which programs are accessing this so I don't have to worry about changing settings all of the time?
Hello everyyone. Ive only been using this phone and android since yesterday afternoon. I played with the phone very extensively yesterday and never saw the 3g while i was on wifi and then last night i applied the gps "fix" do you think that could of caused it to show. did all who is having this problem apply the gps fix ?
I believe using a push syncing service like exchange will cause this. on my windows mobile phones exchange wouldn't work over wifi.
Hmm is the default mail app an exchange like server ? So I should pull my info from that one and soley use the gmail app?

My problem showed up after this as well, but I can't imagine that would be the cause of it...
I'm seeing both Wifi and 3G on as well. Oddly enough, only Wifi seems to be on after it sits for a night (both charging and just unplugged). As soon as I disabled Wifi, 3G came back on, but after reenabling Wifi, the 3G stayed on.
As far as I can tell with 3G Watchdog, it's not using 3G when they're both on, but I'm worried that battery life is impacted by having them both on. I'm assuming this isn't normal behavior then.
FYI, I also applied the GPS fix, but I think I was seeing them both on even before I did that.
I get this as well, even when not using maps. I noticed it before I did the gps fix.
I do use gmail app which uses push, but still WIFI should always take over once connected. I noticed though that on the 3G icon the upload/download arrows are grey, not white or red (the transmit/receive colors).
I was concerned at first but I installed the AT&T app and I don't have a lot of data usage. I think its a bug.
I had both icons as well for a couple of days while in a wifi area. Messed with the gps settings again today and I'm back to wifi only icon. Didn't even reboot.

[Q] Bluetooth GPS and Galaxy Tab 2 7"

Hi Everyone.
Does anyone tried to use external bluetooth GPS reciever with Galxy Tab 2 7" (P3110) with Bluetooth GPS App from Android market?
Also, do I need root for this app to run?
Marek.
Why use an external GPS when it has GPS built in?
As far as I know it has A-GPS.
Or maybe I'm wrong...

A-GPS is better than GPS. It means GPS plus the ability to lock on quicker using Wifi and cell tower positioning.

"Reliability: Location determined via A-GPS are slightly less accurate than GPS GPS devices can determine location coordinates to within 1 meter accuracy
Cost: It costs money to use A-GPS devices on an ongoing basis because they use mobile network resources. GPS devices communicate directly with satellites for free. There is no cost of operation once the device is paid for."
Checkout last 2 points about Reliability and Costs. As a wifi-only p3113 user, having the ability to connect to GPS sat (even with no internet) would be a HUGE plus. So I would love to know how this bluetooth workaround works!

Have you tried? With wifi off I lock on to GPS in 2 seconds. Offline maps navigation works perfect... what more do you want?

Oh and from Wikipedia...
Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS or aGPS, is a system which can, under certain conditions, improve the startup performance, or time-to-first-fix (TTFF) of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.

I love it when people are always confused about A-GPS.
A-GPS is BETTER than just GPS.
Assisted GPS means, that instead of just relying on the GPS satllites, it helps setting the position from WIFI and cell network.
It does NOT cost any money.
It is also handy, when you are indoors, so your device does not get a position fix from GPS satellites.
Besides, this samsung receives the Russian GLONASS satellites in addition to the American GPS, so its very precise.
My 10.1 tab2 (has the same receiver) sees 15+ satellites indoors!
GPS test shows precision down to 1m.

A-GPS need data connection
Hi, these posts are great to explain the difference between the A-GPS and regular GPS, but what happens if you do not have a data plan on your tablet and you are not in a wireless range. There is no way to activate the GPS.
The only way I have been able to use my no data Samsung 10.1 is to activate the GPS while in a wireless area then I can go for a drive (will always stay connected). If I would try to activiate the GPS on the road, I am out of luck.
Any work arounds?
Tether your phone to it....or. ... dont use a tablet for directions use your smart phone....and if you tell, e you dont have one then go return your tablet and get a real phone...

I have a Tab-2 7 inch with no G-whatever. The GPS is real and doesn't need anything other than to turn it on. It works fine. Try "GPS Test" it will tell you what is going on.
Just a point, an external GPS module will have about 1/2 the positional error of the built in GPS if you have WAAS or equivalent DGPS coverage. I get about 30 feet peak to peak error with the built in GPS and about 15 feet with my external Qstarz unit.
Tethering
Tethering your phone for GPS use will eat up your data plan. T-Mobile for example will limit your roaming data bucket if your phone is not within their network. The GPS feature of tablets is nice and the maps are large but I use a separate GPS unit for long distance driving and there's no extra charges. I bought a unit from Costco with free map updates for life! I would rather tether my tablet for internet use while on the road, it breaks the boredom with your passengers and they can watch Netflix too, depending on the signal. I do find that there is a lag connecting to the internet because the signal has to refresh with new tower signals.
Do you have to have a WiFi signal to use the Gaps? I lobe using my tablet in my truck but don't always want to connect my tablet to my phone

Assuming you mean A-GPS, no, the A- bit (assisted) needs data but that's just to speed up the initial fix time.
However, if you want to do something useful with the information about where you are, you may need a data connection; Google maps for example needs a data connection to get the maps, unless you have pre-cached them for the area you are in.

i dont like this either because every other phone ive had that hides 3g 4g the wifi goes in the place of it but thats the only thing so far ive found that i dont like
2 from me,
1. Battery life is tough. I must have this phone charging whenever I am at my desk or It will be dead by 8pm. I would consider myself to be a power user. I'm coming from an Atrix 2 and would make it through the day with only charging in the car dock.
2. No true gps toggle. I use the toggle switchs all the time, all others work but GPS.
Otherwise I love the phone it's very quick and I'm loving ICS

The only problem I've had was with the screen sensitivity. It's no longer a problem. I fixed it with a Moshi Screen protector.
It's thick enough to balance out the touch screen and it covers up all the Logos on the phone.
Juice Defender can also cause wacky wifi performance issues. You can adjust the custom settings in Juice Defender to leave wifi alone.
Smart Actions hasn't caused any problems with waking up any of the radios or wifi.
Wifi works best if you disable anything that has to do with automatically connecting.
When you connect to your wireless point, just click "remember" when it asks you to save settings. That way it should connect/reconnect faster when you are within range because it's not scanning. It'll just connect.
Anyways, from a security stand point you do not want it to automatically connect to any open network. Wireless SSID can be spoofed with a name change, and connecting to open networks is asking for someone to record your activity, or even launch SSL strip to fish out information on the secure sites you visit. Packet sniffing at a Starbucks free WiFi is easier than using 'One-Click-Root.'
So just avoid open networks and disable anything to do with auto connecting. It'll speed up waking up WiFi and it'll make you much more secure.
If you still have wifi issues just toggle airplane mode on and off.

There's 8GB of space; how did 2 apps fill that? Go into setting>Storage and see what's really eating up your internal storage. I found that the camera by default saves pics/vids to the SDCard and I would bet that's what's killing your space. If so you can change the setting in the camera app and use the "Manage Internal Storage" to move over pics/vids that are currently on internal storage.
I've not had any wifi issues.
Having had this only 2 days, the only problem I've noticed is that there is noise when listening to music. Specifically using the standard Apple earphones and listening to Pandora. I also tried some other cheapo earphones and the same thing. I tried both earphones on my old 3g ipod and it was crystal clear. But this is really a nit-picky thing and I can only hear it on the lowest volume setting.
I get this notification asking for what keyboard input I want to use sometimes when I have the keyboard opened. I click it and it asks me what keyboard input I want to use. I have never installed any other keyboards and this has been happening ever since I got my phone a few days aho
