Has anyone seen this before? I am getting a -0.00 results in SpeedTest.net in my N1. Actually, all the tests that I ran appear to be very inconsistent, going from 3.5Mbps to the -0.00, from one test to the next, so I don't know if it is my phone or the t-mobile network. I did a couple of test over wifi and those were very consistent results.
I started having this problem after flashing Rod's MIUI mod, and then going back to CM 6.1.1. I did a complete reinstall of CM and flashed the radio and no changes. I am not really aggravated by this problem, but it is kind of annoying, as my data transfer is very slow some times.
Any comments will be highly appreciated.
I get that sometimes if I have the app open and switch between wifi and cell network, or vise versa. I just close the app and then reopen and it works fine.
You might want to flash your old radio back (if you changed it).
You can also try flashing the radio prior to install of new rom.
It's tmobile network. Cuz you gotta watch the data connection indicator on the status bar. If theres no arrows go up and down the connection is weak, very weak or mostly no connections at all.

how long can you browse or stream on 3g before the connection dies when you have full signal?
I'm getting three or four pages, then I have to enable airplane mode to reset the connection. actual speed is great, and signal strength good, but connection time is never over five minutes. does froyo contribute to this?
i'm using the default (no root, nothing special) froyo with the included radio on a stock non-root n1.
So far, I don't see an upper limit on how long my connection will last. It has never cut out on me. So I say I can load an infinite amount of pages before it cuts out...
What Radio/Software are you using?
I'm on stock rom, stock browser on Fido. Latest Radio.

i should have input my current config... updating original post
it doesn't matter if i use the default browser, or dolphin, or any other application. after 4-5 views/pages/whatever it will end up with a non working connection. it appears that the is UP travel, for 30 seconds to a minute or more, but no DOWN travel at all. during this time pages will disply "No Connection at this time, try again later" or a similar message.
I'm using my n1 on tmobile, with 3-4 bars of 3G coverage, while stationary. doesn't seem to matter if i'm on a tower i usually use @ my home, or at work, or where. it's a pretty consistant failure of traffic.
I can go hours. In fact I've never had this issue I've read about.
It sounds like you've eliminated all other options. i.e. does the same thing no matter where you are or what the signal strength is.
Which normally should mean it is on your end. Do you have any apps installed that could interfere? Maybe some data transfer meter, or some apps that are auto syncing?
Ive had this same problem no matter what rom or radio im using. My phone shows a 3g connection with full signal but pages wont load.

none nope
hmmm
My connection could get stuck some times, but that was before I updated to Froyo. What would happen was that it would seem to be constantly uploading and I couldn't use the connection for anything so I had to go airplane-mode and back.
Don't really know what the issue you have is though, especially since mine went away with Froyo. I've been browsing for _long_ periods of time after I got Froyo without any issues so...
After flashing CM6RC2 I can see that the data connection keeps switching between 3G and H, while it does this, my connection goes on and off, and I believe it's killing my battery as well.
I'm pretty sure it's not the ROM because the connection goes on and off while I was on stock. The ROM just made the difference of showing the data changing.
Is there a way I can make it go between only Edge and 3G, or just Edge and H? Like to try it that way for a few days and see how it goes.

No and no. Your connection does nothing wrong, you have data streaming - that's why you see H coming on. If you want to save your battery - look for the application that pulls the data constantly. HSDPA is extension of UMTS (3G), it works when you're connected 3G.

Can you give me an example of "pulling data constantly"? Like setting up Twitter to check for updates every 15 min?
Everytime my battery goes low and I check usage, the top two are Display and Cell Standby, with Display having a huge lead.
That's what you're going to have. Your battery status looks ok.
Example - setting a widget to update every minute, or setting a widget to update when it can't access whatever it needs to access. Also, if I'm not mistaken, data usage shows as a part of "Voice calls" or "Phone idle", and not as a part of "Cell standby" or "Display". I'll try to verify it later today.
Now this is curious to me, I just recently unlocked/rooted and flashed to CM6 RC1, on a Nexus One. I'm on a ATT Microcell and previous to root always had 3G at pretty constant speeds around 1.5/1.6 Mbps. Since flashing I see the H i'm guessing probably 60/70% of the time and after looking at the DalviK Debug Monitor Logs i'm pretty sure I know what widgets/apps are keeping the data connection alive. The thing is though when the H is displayed the highest speeds I see using the Speedtest app are around 0.2/0.3 Mbps which seems pretty lousy. If I go to *#*#info#*#* and click WCDMA only I seem to lose my connection altogether, although I didn't leave it there long. I'd like to go back to 3G only but not sure how to go about this, it was never an issue before root/flash, and I really like The Cyanogen Mod, my device is more stable now then when I was running stock 2.2 FRF91. Any ideas? or am I stuck with this situation until I flash something else, or go back to stock (ain't gonna happen, the stock thing).
Cyan ROMs automatically set your build prop file hsxpa to 1, but stock value is 2. This probably is limiting your speed. I know it caps my upload speed to 0.3 Mbps so I edit the value back to stock of 2.
BTW, if this thread is still up - I've checked, and the data (at least when I tether) falls under "Voice calls" category.
Is it possible to adjust build.prop to only use H and Edge?

what you are seeing is the way the microcell works, i think it only operates at a certain frequency and registers with the phone at whatever rate is displayed when the cyanogen icon is displayed for 3g, the slower data speed is because the microcell uses your own internet pipe when you use data from the cell
nope to both!
I run CM7 nightlies on my Tmobile N1. Recently I killed my cable Internet/TV connection at home and have been using the built in WiFi tether for my home devices.
While it typically works great (for free), the data on my N1 will lock up. I have full 3G/HSDPA at my house. Using #*#*4636*#*# it states I am connected but fails to ping or load up any data on the phone or through its shared connection.
The only way to fix the problem is to toggle airplane mode and re-enable the WiFi Tether or sometimes a reset is required.
I've changed to several Gingerbread roms, flashed various radios, and even exchanged SIM cards.
Is this behavior normal or not? For regular web surfing I can live with it, but the main problem is that I cannot download anything without it getting interrupted (like updated nightlies or 50mb+ files).
Bumpity
No one has any problems with their WiFi sharing?
i used my phones internet as my regular home internet for a month. i used up about 25 gigs. i streamed videos, downloaded videos and podcasts with no interruptions. don't know what your problem could be. i was using cyan 6.1.1
I occasionally have experienced that issue, but it seems as if you have it much more frequently than I ever did. I would mainly get it when I tethered from areas with bad reception.
You state that you have full 3G/HSPA at your house. I am wondering how many bars of reception you happen to have. Also, try setting your phone to WCDMA Only in that 4636 menu. That seemed to decrease the frequency at which it happened for me.
I also found that once in a while, I could get tethered data working again by simply using the phone's native web browser to access any data. Good luck with the issue.

I typically have full bars of signal usually reading around -100dbm. When the internet drops, it drops completely; maps, browser, apps, etc all fail and I can't "jump start" it other then toggling airplane mode or resetting the phone. Typically a reset is best.
Perhaps I'll flash back to CM 6.1 and test it over the weekend. I'll do a backup of my current setup if things aren't fixed.
The purpose of this thread was simply to see if others have experienced the same issues and if it was worth "trying" to fix.
It might be a case of overheating device - it'll be good to test different ROMs and kernels.
I don't think the device is over heating at all rather then just a carrier issue. I flashed to CM 6.1.1 over the weekend and immediately found I was still having data issues (where it would work for like 5 minutes then drop out).
I did find that EDGE was a solid connection and stayed connected while I downloaded CM7 and GAPPS. I put a call into Tmobile and yacked at them for several hours. They escalated it up several times in their engineering department and so we'll see. I spoke to HTC a few times in there and they didn't think it was a handset problem either.
I guess we can close this thread as it doesn't seem to be a wide spread problem. I am running a stable version of CM7 now and we'll see.
@above: I have tested different radios, roms, and kernels. This thread started out as a issue with WiFi Tethering but ended up being the phone simply dropping its data connection. I originally was curious if this wifi sharing behavior was normal or not.

Well i use my phone for work alot and it requires internet. I'm currently using the MilkyS ROM and the first time I flashed it my phone was probably slower than the stock 2.1 but internet was working fine. So i eventually got sick of the speed because games would lag and even general navigating. When I reflashed it the speed was fine it was great infact however my 3g started playing up it shows the 3g symbol, the APN is fine but the data connection is very unstable it might work for 2 minutes then drop out and stop working for 10 and the 3g symbol sometimes disappears when this happens! I'm becoming extremely frustrated please throw all your ideas at me. is it the modem i have to install with milkyS? will it solve the problem if i don't flash with the modem? thanks!!

Well buddy i think the problem is with the carrier !!
My SGS also have the same problem ,i found it out that some places couldn't get perfect 3G coverage that makes our signal reception to stutter,I changed the option to GSM only from GSM auto(PRL)in Jetpack v5.1 JVS this made the signal stable but my 3G is gone....
its even the same in JVQ too and my friend's SGS also does the same,it even did happen to my old MotoDroid/Milestone.So i think its a carrier issue...!
I don't think it is I think it has something to do with modem compatibility because I get the 3g symbol and every so often internet works for a bit of time but then cuts out and it just shows 3g sending but not receiving and sometimes the 3g symbol will disappear. I only had this problem when I tried to reflash the ROM. My reason for reflashing was slow phone speed for some reason but internet worked flawlessly. I had the same issue with the internet with the darky's rom too so I'm not sure of the issue but it's bugging me!!

If you are confident that its a modem issue then try CM7 and these threads maybe useful!

Try these.
As a quick and temporary solution, you can always return back to your stock firmware.
Go to samfirmware.com and download the original one.
Wifi works perfectly, but mobile internet has been very sketchy and now does not seem to connect at all, even after disabling wifi and changing the settings. I get both the "H" and "G" symbols, but the arrows below them show that no data is being sent or received. I notice there is a thread on here regarding the same issue on Virtuos Unity, and radios are mentioned quite a bit, but I have a GB 2.3 radio and am not radio S OFF, so not confident about flashing a new radio. Also, it has worked in the past and only stopped working in the last few days. Any ideas? Is it the radio?
Thanks.
