Hey guys I'm a noob and sprint decided to give me a hero do to my defective noment I took it over the intercept because of the support here on XDA and I've been lookin around and I like but my question remains what's the best rom for the cdma hero that will still allow the flasplayer to work any ideas or ways to keep makin it work. THANX
Unfortunately, full flash support can not be achieved. There's a light version out there, but I don't know how well it works.

I believe Nfinite's Roms have Flash Lite, and then using a browser like Skyfire gives additional flash support as it deals with it server side.
Use Nfinites rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849024 there and then do a search for Zen's Any Kernal with no Perflock. It makes it an extremely snappy Sense Rom. Only Sense has the Flash working, none of the AOSP roms do I believe.
Only downside is Nfinite is on Hiatus due to some personal stuff but he has popped back in and said he isn't gone, just dealing with it and plans to update again soon.
my replyo
ok thanx so fo example even I port the flash light apk (htc flash player) can I at least use that on the aosp rom or the cm 6 or does they need the sense to even aollow it to work ? I just want to be ready to root asap when the hero arrives tomorow
You cannot use those functions in an AOSP rom, has to be with sense.
Ok one last thing before I do this once I get my recovery going and I'm rooted of course I do a data wipe then apply a zip (rom) file correct and if I want to try other roms repeat the proscces. Right just want to make sure. That's how I would do it on my moment

Yes you would go to recovery, do a factory reset, wipe Dalvik, Cache, etc and then you can flash the new zip for the rom you wish to try.
Most roms will have a sort of guide or instructions, some have things specific to the rom being flashed, so make sure and read the full post, and maybe browse the thread for tidbits that users have had to say about the rom.

Is it worth it to wait for 2.1 for my CDMA Hero or should I just flash a custom rom?
If so what is the best ROM for the Hero thats out right now?
And if I do flash a custom rom can I then upgrade to 2.1 when it is officially released?

There is no reason to wait for Sprint to release 2.1. Go ahead and flash a 2.1 custom ROM, as for what ROM... I can't suggest a good one they are all pretty great. I suppose to start you off I would suggest flashing the latest Damageless or a Fresh ROM, a lot of ROMs are based of their work.
Once Sprint releases the official 2.1 don't upgrade. There is a possibility you may lose your root access, besides that someone will have a optimized version readily available soon after release.
Alright, will do.
For some reason I was forgetting they would optimize sprint's 2.1 for Hero after it came out.
Now to pick...
1 more question... I'm pretty sure the answer to this is yes and I know its a stupid question but...
I'll still be able to use my phone as a phone right? Wiping the data before I load a rom won't wipe the phone number linked to my account right?

Of course!
As long as you sign into Google at the startup, all your contacts should sync. You will still have your own number. Your own number is linked to your Sprint account anyway.

Once I have the new ROM to apply an espresso bar mod I just flash that with the normal filename then?

Im very new to rooting and rom switching so please go easy
I just tried the cyanogen mod 6 for my nexus 1 and i have a few questions about it.
First, i cant really see anything new accept a few things in the cyanogen menu under "settings". Second, i cant see a speed increase either. Stock is actually working faster!
After all the amazing stuff i keep hearing about cyanogen, i just wanna know, what is it about this one (cm6) that im missing??? I just wanna appreciate it like everyone else
I have no clue.. i went back to Geo411m's ROM..
Personally i want a ROM that is more closer to stock as possible, and i really have no need for certain tweaks really. I used the 5.0.8 N1 quite abit before i went over to Froyo. It was allright for me but later on i really like stock based ROM's.
i agree. its seems as though the stock roms work best with froyo (for now anyway) i have been using a rom called "frf_blackbar_v3_signed" and its working great.
Since im new to this stuff (coming from an iphone!) i just figured i was missing out on something right under my eyes! I know its a new rom and it will get better too.
Have faith and give CM some time
They've been working on it for two weeks and its only their first official froyo release(RC1). Im sure things will pick up and get more exciting soon.
I also tested the performance of stock vs cm, and they didn't differ by that much...
Cyanogen has tons of additional features. What I recommended you do is look at his changelog.
He has listed all the new goodies.
Personally I like the kernal which allows overclocking, the music app which has support for flac right out the box, and the renderer which switches the screen color to save you battery.
I will pay attention to Cyanogen ROM for sure..
yea il be keeping an eye on it as well. Can i ask...
What is a kernel?
What is a online kitchen?
why do we have to flash different radios? (do they mean TMO and AT&T radios?)

Exact same here. Went from CM6 to Geo411m's ROM yesterday. Its fast, I know what I have, and battery life is good. Tried LeoFroYo this morning but there was just too much there for what I need. A quick Nandroid restore to Geo411m and that's where I'm staying for now

kernel is the guts of your system
online kitchen is where users can create their own roms
new radios add new features that some roms depend on
i don't recommend you messing with any of these things until you do a lot of reading
from what i understand the only way to truly screw up is if i DONT do a nandroid backup. If i do a nandroid backup once when i just rooted and unlocked the bootloader do i still have to do them every time i wanna put on a new rom to fully ensure that i dont brick or badly screw up my phone?
not necesarily, i nandroid before i do any mods to my system just in case i trash it i can boot it right back up just like it was 5 mins prior
If you truly brick your phone, you won't be able to boot into recovery to restore. You do a nandroid once you have your rom setup the way you want, so when you restore you go back to that point. Cyanogen is one of the best, if not the best. The man went through it with Google, just to bless us with his gift, show some RESPECT!!!!! I just flashed his latest & greatest, and I love it. Although im not a fan of white status bar. I like nothing stock, but I flashed black status bar, and pushed black goggle search box, and rm the apps I didn't want, like twitter and gmail. It's a keeper, and will only get better. The more ability to customize the better. That's why I root in the first place. Options, options, options, I love it.

You don't brick your phone by flashing a new ROM that doesn't contain radio. You don't brick your phone with almost anything that you do, in the worst case - you're left with a phone that doesn't load OS and needs wipe+reflash, and you lose all your settings and data.
But:
You DO brick your phone by flashing the wrong radio / interrupting radio flash before it finishes.
As with the rest of your questions: I suggest you use this forum and Google and read a lot. That would answer your questions.
Also, I was a user of CyanogenMod on 2.1, kept it until LeoFroyo hit 1.2-beta, flashed, liked, and now I'm with Enomther, who has a fast, stable ROM with most of the features Cyanogen has, and it covers everything I want/need. I'll wait for CyanogenMod to integrate Apps2SDExt into framework, and then compare it again.
Hey gang,
I just bought a used HERO for my mother and would like to root it and load a custom rom. I will follow this guide to root it : Step By Step Way to root Using Flashrec(Updated 4/5)
I need some advice on a good clean rom though.
Below are my 'wanted features' in a rom.
Android 2.1
HTC Sense
stable (no need for constant reboots)
App2SD
good battery life
NOT overclocked
NOT themed (she just wants what she sees in the commercials. Stock look and colors)
keyboard with voice input (she sucks at typing and just wants to "talk to text")
LWP (optional but she probably won't use)
I looked at the rom area... and got lost with all of the choices.
She will never change a single setting once it is configured for her.
she just wants an "Android".
Thnx!
Everything except that stupid Blue Echo Rom, that thing is horrible

I don't follow you...
Please link me to a ROM that fits her needs (if that exists)
Try nfinitiefx45 stock 2.1 deodexed or damage control 2.09.01
Sorry I can't link from the xda app.
Also, if the phone already has 2.1 on it, there is a new rooting method. If it has 1.5, flashrec should work fine.

+1 for nfinitefx45's stock ROM. but get the odex version since you won't be using themes
Fresh is also a good option with slight visual tweaks (uses HTC Espresso launcher + vanilla lock screen)
of the 2 i'd guess the nfinitefx ROM is more stable since it's closer to stock, but I honestly haven't tried fresh.

My sig says it all....
(although DD is on a new version now... and does not have sense, but with a few simple flashes, who needs it?)
(PS, LWP sux, will not work on most roms (ie, not sticking on standby), and a batt drain, and slows sys down. dont bother.)
(PPS, after re-reading your OP, I am wondering why you are looking for a custom rom at all? b-sides the lwp thang, stock has all that, no theme, stable. root is good for a few extra things and I recommend it, but perhaps use a stock rom for stability and consistency....?)

ah yes, unless you go for a cyan rom, or some other 2.2 build, which I dont recommend personally, yet.
and make sure you have a class 6 card at least for a2sd...
I think you just want another Hero to play with lol. If you really want a custom rom, the odex version of Nfinite's stock rom has gobs of internal memory and is snappier than any deodexed rom.

well, I have been told by countless ppl here that anything less than a C6 "does not work well", frankly not knowing what that exactly means, but apparently causes instability/data corruption? whateva.

+1 for odexed version of nifinite stock rom. i think that wold be perfect, and easiest to "suport" if needed.
Thank you all for the help!
Here is what I did.
Rooted using this 2.1 guide:
[GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero
Flashed the following ROM:
[ROM] Sprint 2.27.651.6 STOCK Deoxed w/A2SD 2.7.5_pf4a |7/31/2010|
(i have not tried JIT just yet...)
All seems perfect! I believe my Ma will love this. Who knows... maybe Pop will want one too =)
Thnx again!

Then u haven't used the new jit. Cause the one nfinite and I are using is very stable and very fast. There will be an update out soon for it.
I am looking for stock 2.1 to put back on a Hero so that it can be programmed for a new user. (it currently has Fresh, and the programming - ##3282# does not work!)
So where can I find a flashable (not the RUU) 2.1?
Thanks for any help you can provide - a link would be great!
Look for liquid sense or nifinity stock based roms it's like 3 or 4 of them or look for the engery rom by pmgrands all of these are all sense based roms you can find in the hero/dev forum. Good luck
Yea it's Me Again With the
Modified Hero
Thanks - the problem is that Fresh is Sense-based too, and the ##3282# programming does not work on it.
Do you know is this works with the above mentioned ROMs?
Thx again.
Why don't you just run the RUU, activate the phone, and then root it again? Don't take it the wrong way, it's just a suggestion. I know I had a heck of a time trying to root my phone for the first time, but now that I have done it, I don't think I would have any problems doing it over again.

Should work with no problem is what I wanna say but the only way to make sure is to flash them for yourself. They should work though as they are newer builds. Good luck

You don't even have to unroot to activate the phone. Just flash any Sense rom and call Sprint. Cake and pie.

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!
The problem is that the person with the phone is a newbie, and RUU is not working for some reason. Anyway I talked them through flashing the NFX-Sprint ROM so they got the damn thing programmed, and now they are back to Fresh.
(and to respond to laie1472, as I said above, the issue was that not every Sense ROM allows the programming, thus the question as to which work and whick do not...)
Thanks one and all.

No problem to fix and go back off course but still...
Can anyone tell me how to get it to work?
I tried flashing CoreDroid. It looks very nice and have many of the things i want. But i want it in the stock ROM.
Anyone can give my a kind of idiot guide to emplement some 3.0 stuff in my IS?
Me too, I'm new to customising Android. I have done iphones and psp in the past but the information is not clear on this topic and seems to be all over the place and spread accross many topics.
I currenty have flashed the standard virgin Rom to debrand my IS and I have made it s-off and its now rooted with clockwork mod recovery installed. I would like to install some Denver 3 stuff to the standard Rom but being a noob I'm reluctant to try with out a better understanding.
Could someone please give us noobs a straight forward guide in doing this.

It works very well for people who like sense!
Yeah just downloaded it and about to give it a shot. I hope I dont screw up my phone. Never done this before.
I just figured it would be easier to add the stuff to an existing rom rather than flash a complete custom one.
Cheers
Pat
I personaly don't like the Sense 3.0 to much animation which gets kind of boaring after some time and sucks performance and battery!
Just my oppinion
well, with a Nabdroid Backup you should ot be worried to try a new ROM as you can always go back!
I tried the first relase of the Cyanogen ROM and that's the one for me so far.
I already liked the stock ROM on the Nexus S - but not the device itself.
So the Cyanogen ist very close - but better!
Is it easy to do? the instructions seem simple enough. I have made a back up of my existing rom, so if something goes wrong I can re flash my original rom and be back to square 1 correct.
Correct - it is a full image.
You go back exactly to the point where you created the recovery.
I love this feature - it makes it possible to try out a different ROM without loosing all the work you did on the ROM.
Last thing before I do it. It says to do a full wipe? Is this done in the recovery menu? do I do wipe data/factory reset as well as wipe cache partition?
Or is this a different thing all together?
Cheers
PAt
A wipe data/factory reset is sufficient. People will say do it three times, but you only have to do it once.

Im really just after the lock screen and the weather widget. The other stuff imnot fussed about.
The resolution on the unity rom is a bit funny. It all functions great tho.
I tried the android revolution HD and that worked except for the market wouldnt download.
Is there a way to just flash the lock screen and widgets to a stock un modified virgin au ROM?
Cheers

Would HIGHLY recommend this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498
There's nothing different to the Stock Rom apart from the fact it runs alot more smoothly.
You then install this:-
•HTC Sense 3.0 "All in 1" (version 0.3) for Android Revolution HD 1.0.x
And voila - Sense 3.0
Thats the one I had and the market didnt work, formated and flashed it 3 times.
