My rooted Nook still allows me to buy and download books from B&N -- I just cant use the special in-store features. What exactly is failing on yours?
Sent from my Nooted friend...

keeps telling me i need to put in my credit card info on the barnes and nobles site. I have done this. its there in my account settings. but the store isnt picking it up.
How do I see were I configured my inital account to see witvh one i used or change it to the one with the card?

It most likely has nothing to do with your nook being rooted. Your credit card was probably just entered in wrong on the B&N website. Try re-entering it on there. Verify that you have a valid US billing address as well, and that the card is selected as the default card. If it is still not working, call 1 (800) THE-BOOK and they can tell you what is wrong.

[Q] B&N in-store access when rooted?

Not directly development related, but I'm wondering if this is a side effect of rooting:
I took my rooted Colornook to a brick and mortar B&N store today. I connected to the wifi, but didn't receive the notice about using the in-store network, and was unable to connect to the in-store network (browse books for up to an hour, etc.). I set my default home from LauncherPro back to the Nook Home and powercycled, but I was still unable to connect.
Has anyone successfully used the "in store network" on their ColorNook, rooted or otherwise?
My NOOKColor isn't rooted and I have used the in-store network including the special "B&N Home" while in their store. I have also browsed books in store for free.

Um, so that doesn't help us. We know non-rooted NC's can access the B&N Home while in store.

Maybe not, but it is what the OP asked:

I had trouble using the in-store WiFi a few days ago, but didn't give it much thought. I guess it is possible that this is a side-effect of rooting.
Well, I'm in a b&n right now. My nootered nook does NOT have access to any of the in-store features.
DuncanWatson - do you get any kind of pop-up or alert when you connect to the in-store features? when you connect to the wifi?
For clarity - when I use my rooted color nook in store, it automatically connects to the wifi with no notifications, but I do not have any access to "in store" features.
I'm curious to hear more people's experiences...
It's probably a smart move on their part. We could just get all the books for free then as they probably are copied to the nook temporarily.

That's encouraging in a backwards sort of way... Maybe it's a general issue and not something specific to rooted devices. I wonder how they'd be checking anyhow...
My rooted nook was able to access the "In Store" section. The icon on the BN dock changed and everything. I even tried out the free 1 hour read preview and downloaded some books that were only free to in store users
I can clarify a bit. I work for b&n, & spend a significant portion of my time at the nook desk. When my nc could not access the in-store features, all of our demo nc units were finding it just fine, as was my non-rooted original nook. This definately started happening when I rooted.

I wonder what in the rooting process would cause this to happen ? All rooting is doing is clearing security on specific files/folders for the most part, correct ?
Maybe it has something to do with specific apps that may have been installed (like a different launcher) ?
Don't have the device, don't even live in the same continent.
Could someone compare the changes you make when rooting? I am pretty sure you'll be changing a file when you run your root tool. Perhaps there's a log you can monitor, or something that shows what it did. Failing that, you might need to get a logcat of the device failing to get onto the store connection.
That might indicate if it's detected the device is rooted. There are ways round all these kinds of restrictions, so if something is looking to see if a folder is chmod 700 (ie, not readable to the user), we could easily change that to check it's at 766 (read and writable to all), for example.
That would seem the best way to figure out why you're not getting access to the store content. If someone can get alogcat onto the device, and take a log from in store, you might get somewhere in starting to look?
I went to a store today specifically to check this and sure enough I accessed the network just fine but no in store access. Just regular wifi. I have a third party launcher installed but I tried using the nook launcher and even tried a reboot.

I was wondering if a factory reset can reinstate the unrooted condtion and let the device access the "read in store" again?

I'm not sure as I haven't tried, but something else worthy of mentioning...pretty sure I lost my "free trials" for newspaper and magazine. I don't see the option anymore and I didn't accept either trial prior to rooting.

I seem to still have access to Free Trials. At least, the button shows up when I'm on my home wifi network. Do you not see the button anymore?
Shows up for me also....grabbed a magazine free trial.....we will see if I get charged.

Was in the Boston B&N store yesterday with my rooted nook. Absolutely no problem getting store resources working for net access and browsing and reading books.
As far as magazine subscriptions go, I have two free trials going right now, created after I was rooted, plus purchased another subscription.

Google Books on NC

Anyone able to get google books app running on NC. I have a rooted NC and am able to install app from market but when it runs it opens briefly then closes. Any experience or suggestions?

Make sure you have an SD Card in
The fix for this was bizarre and rather humorous.
I'd been using the SD out of my HTC hero to root my NC because I couldn't locate where I'd stored my older microSDs.
This of course meant I was promptly removing the card from the NC once done and resetting it back to usable fashion for my phone.
Each time I tried to install/run Google Books it would not load just like you.
Ran into another app Zedge that did same thing, and discovered it complaining about needing an sdcard inserted.
Sure enough, I put my SD back in and like a charm, Google Books and Zedge were both able to run.
Later I removed card from the NC and went back into Books. It still loaded, but gave me a popup about where to store files. I was then able to point it to store internal storage and been fine ever since.
Zedge however, WILL NOT work if there is not an external sd card inserted still.

thanks, would not have figured that out for my self.
How to even get the program?
I'm running into a different problem, which is that Google won't even let me *try* to install Google Books for Android. If I search from the marketplace there's no result, if I search from my PC it tells me the nook color isn't compatible, and if I search from the web on the nook the dowload button tells me the requested item could not be found.
(I know this is a gravedig, but the nice video said to post in a similar thread if possible, I hope I'm doing it right).
Edit: CM7 nightly (6/18) is my rooted software.
I have Google Books working just fine on my NC running the latest CM7 nightly.
I have a different question regarding Google Books... does anyone use this app as their primary ebook application? I like the idea of it syncing your last read page in their "cloud," so that I can easily pick up where I left off either on my NC, my Android phone or on their website. I'm not thrilled with either the NOOK app or the Amazon Kindle app and the Aldiko app is okay, just curious if anyone has made Google Books their primary ebook application.
Thanks.
I have no problem running Google Books. I do have a problem with the feature set. You can read books in landscape mode on an iPhone and IPad but not 2.X Android.
I decided to save a few $ since I found a google book $4 cheaper than an Amazon Kindle version. This was a mistake as it was not in epub format but was a scanned book (source 7 x 9 Paperback) in PDF format.
I noticed on the google site they do disclose that it is "Better for larger screens.". As I purchased on a third party site, I did not see that notice. However, I probably would have bought anyway as I would have assumed my nook screen was much larger than an Android phone screen. Without a workable zoom/landscape mode and word wrap, it is not readable on my Nook. I can only read the book on my laptop. I was very disappointed.
Give ezPDF a try.
Rodney
Anybody notice that the Nook is now listed as an incompatible device on https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&feature=search_result, and Books no longer shows up in the Market on the Nook.
Is this B&N shaking things up?

Sure, going to have to do that now for Netflix anyways, but the question is WHY is Google+B&N doing this now all of a sudden?
Is this the tip of more stuff getting shut out of NC?

Thought Google Books gives you TWO views for one book, scanned and machine (OCR). Did you check the menu to see if it gives you an alternative view?
Many times, I prefer the scanned view because it maintains the original book art and formatting vs OCR that strips and neuters everything.

[REQ] Nook android app

so, my rooted nook reset itself when i opened the shop. After re-rooting, I renamed all the B&N apps so that I can't launch them accidentally.
But I'd still like to be able to shop the Nook store. I thought I could use the nook app in the Market; but it won't launch.
So, my request is for a version of the nook app that will work on the Nook Color.
thanks,
Matt
I don't think anyone's gotten it to launch on their nook. I could be wrong though.
Just tried it. Doesn't launch

The Nook app in the Market does not launch for stock devices. I have read that people using Nookie Froyo have been able to install and use the Nook application from the Market though.
It only allows for book shopping, not magazines. I wish we could figure out a way to get the awesome magazine reader to port...
I hope the magazine reader will work... I actually love that since I move around alot, I can carry my books and magazines with me.
Also backed up to B&N servers. I can't see them going out of business anytime soon.
Now I just need a way to back everything up to my computer, And I'll be set
also its not normal for it to do that... have you tried returning the names to normal, deregistering the device, and reregistering? You can deregister in the settings, and then use nookcolor tools to reregister.

[Q] Sold rooted Nook - questions from new owner

I rooted a Nook Color using autonooter and then decided to sell it. Since I had all my personal google app info on it, I returned it back to stock using the 8x reboot method, and then re-rooted it. Part of the root process what the I needed to register the device to B&N and also have a gmail account for the root process. So I created a dummy B&N account using a new gmail account.
I showed the device to the buyer, and he was satisfied. I explained all of this to him and showed him that it was registered on B&N with a dummy name and gmail account. I explained that to get his gmail on there, he just needed to add his account through the settings.
But now that we wants to buy some books, I think he's running into trouble with the device being registered under a dummy name.
So, the question is (finally) can he just de-register the device and put his info info it (and keep the root status) or will he have to unroot it and then do it all over?
Thanks

I don't know what de-registering is. Your ebooks are linked to the email account, not the nook itself. Sell the nook, keep your email, keep your ebooks.

There's an option in the settings to de-register your device. I assume it's for cases like this where you sell the nook to someone else. What I don't know is if you do this, will it un-root it as well, or can he simply de-register it and re-register it to his info.
It shouldn't unroot it, although I can't say for sure. Besides, if it does unroot it, it's easy enough to reroot. It's a better option to try this and see what happens than to reflash a stock rom first.

NookBooks need WIFI CM7

Hello all,
I've got CM7 running great on my NookColor. Even the Nook App works, and I can redownload all of my books to wherever I want without issue. Bravo!
One slight snag though: the Nook App, for some strange reason, seems to require that the Nook be on Wifi in order for some books to open. This means when I'm at work I can't read some of the books I've paid for through B&N. I tried opening these with another reader (Aldiko), but I got a username/password request to open these books, and my B&N login doesn't work.
Does anyone know a fix for this? Or, is there another app that lets you open .epub files that come from the Nook App?
Much obliged!

I don't think I've ever tried using the Nook App with WiFi off - I'll have to try that after work.
As for Aldiko, I was able to read the B&N DRM protected books by using my B&N username (in my case it was my first and last name, but I'm not sure if that's standard) and my credit card number as the password. I just needed to do this once.
I never thought to use that as my password - I'll give that a shot and post back. Thanks!
After updating to the latest nightly and reinstalling, the Nook App is working just fine.
