do u mean "moving apps to SD card" or backing up apps?
backing up apps: no effect on system performance. this is used only to backup to reinstall/restore later.
moving to SD: it could slow down a bit. I don't see a need for this on captivate, since captivate has so much more memory available for system and data, compared to a lot of other devices.
It would have no effect on speed. Lime previous poster said, you ha e plenty of resources available.

This is the first time I have ever been near or used an Android phone. I got my i9000 a few days ago and have started messing about with widgets etc. I have been reading this forum for a few months prior to owning an Android phone as technology interests me. I was following a home screen thread and realized I had to root my Galaxy S to be able to take screenshots. Then I found the One Click Lag Fix app that was on the Android market. The lag was something that was really bothering me and now its running really smooth.
So now I have root what else should I do to my phone?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
A couple apps I use that need root access: mybackup pro and root explorer.
Have fun
I'll be sure to check them out. Anyone else?

This is what I thought too. Apart from backing up to the average user, there doesn't seem to be a lot to do!

Flash roms, overclock cpu, clear app caches. Modify system apps (eg make browser fullscreen).
Anything really.
Clocksync - if cell-network time sync sucks.
MarketAccess - if you can't purchase apps on market
Autokiller or Minfree manager - to keep memory tidy (less necessary on the most recent firmwares)
Screenshot - should be obvious.

Im sticking to stock for now, see no reason to switch. I mostly mix/mash stuff from other roms if i like. But yea i just got my vibrant few days back so i don't know wht roms are available/good. There was this thread however, look for "best firmware" i believe it was called.
Okay thanks for the tips everyone

Is this possible yet? Im very curious...? I read on a fairly old post that because we do not get full access that it was not possible however i understand nothing stands in the way of dedicated xda developers achieving a goal...

You can run most apps from the /sdcard partition, that gives you about 11 more gigs..
Yea i know some apps can run from the sd but ive also noticed if you have an app on the sd card and an icon to it on your desktop when u reboot or mount/unmount sd card they are removed and you have to put them back..... I know this is because during the initial scan it doesnt find the app so it throws out the shortcuts...

ok so this is a simple question i know but conflicting topics have made me post this
i have 1gb system memory
5gb phone memory
29gb of sdcard space
So in short.... WHY CANT I MOVE ANYTHING TO MY ext_SD(the removable one) CARD I HAVE A CLASS 10 32GB SD CARD IM NOT ABLE TO UTILIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*UPDATE EDIT=So looks like the culprit is yet again a phone company making mods to android
+1 to Close the open source!! and go back to google phones.. LG, MOTO, HTC, they all just bloat the sh** out of the phone and take away the modding capabilities
so if anyone has any advice on how or what i can move to my 32GB Ext_SD card... please let me know
I have no problem moving all as compatible apps to the as card. Some apps just don't have that option though.

Some of the games and such are adapted to save on sdcard
Look through o3d forum

OK, I have a quasi solution for you I just thought about. /sdcard is internal and /sdcard/_ExternalSD/ is the your transflash card. Most apps are made to save data to /sdcard which does become an issue when some of the kickass games like shadowgun download 250MB plus of data plus all of your roms and media. What you could do, I gather, is move the directories like those game data directories to /sdcard/_ExternalSD/ and then crate a symlink to it with the same name in sdcard. It's probably what I'LLC do when this last GB is gone, lol.

That's a good idea just put them in the extra SD through the computer or if I can move it with astro maybe ill try that
Hopefully at least I can move my roms since they are the biggest space taker

No, he's talking about the external SD card...as in the card that you can pull out that stores your pictures and videos on. When you move an application on this phone to the SD card, it actually moves it to internal SD application storage. This is my second thrill and neither will move apps to the external SD card.
When you click on apps2sd app and move an app watch and see that your external SD card memory doesn't change at all.
You can edit vold.fstab to,switch how the cards are used

Okay. Continue. I'm listening.
I have a 32 gig SD card I bought specifically to be able to move a ton of apps there. I haven't been able to do so and would love to rather than being limited to the 8 gigs on the phone.
Hope this helps

That method did not work, did not even recognize my sd card ("internal" or "external")
I can post that file when I get home tonight and see if anyone can get them edited.
Okay. Just tell me if I'm wrong. What I'm referring to and what I think the OP was referring to was that external SD card that you buy at the store where you store your music and pictures on. The SanDisk.
The other storage is internal storage, then there's system memory.
Cm7 fixes this.

My memory card got fried and all the games that i had transferred to SD are gone as well. I thought this would be a simple process of buying a new SD card in which I did and reinstalling the app. WRONG.... everytime I try to reinstall the games that were lost my phone would say "REPLACE APPLICATION" and of course I would select OK, it would go thru the entire motions of installing and then in the end would say "APP NOT INSTALLED". So apparently even if the games were lost when my SD card got fried there are reminants left somewhere on the Phone. Does anyone know exactly where i would be able to find the reminants of these games so I can reinstall it without any problems ?

What about using the amazon marketplace on your pc to push it? Not sure if amazon has this function because I don't use amazon.

How fried is the sd card? Data recovery is pretty good with solid state if it is just a partition/mbr/fs/vol issue. If it is truly done and won't show up at all in disk management, then probably done. But if it shows up at all in management, even if it has no partition info or raw, it should be recoverable.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
just re-install via amazon appstore.
Did you wipe dalvik and cache?
Several system cleaners in the play store that cleanup left over app stuff. Try one.
If none of these work, the entries that need to be deleted are in a config file somewhere, no clue which one.
Use TiBu to back up your settings and data, wipe and reflash phone.

My girlfriends ace is forever coming up with some error about internal memory despite the fact that the few apps she has are installed on her sd card. Will putting a custom rom on there and getting rid of the crap like google maps, gmail, shazam... Etc help or not really make much difference. Ive read afew forums and memory seems to be abit of an issue. Unfortunately im new to this rooting and romming lark so j dont really understand alot of the fixes that are mentioned
Clear some app data as a short term fix. Facebook data can be huge.
Long term you're gonna have to root, partition your sd card and link apps to sd. This saves a lot of space because a lot more than the apk can be moved.
