Searched through almost every thread relating to this post and found absolutely nothing. I just flashed Cog 3.0.2 and it works like a dream. The only issue is I am trying to now change the boot sound to a file of my choosing. Default has no sound file. I have looked in these place so far with no luck:
system/media
system/etc
There is no poweron.wav file anywhere and adding one i created myself did nothing.
Any sure fire ways to do this? Id really appreciate some help

sgs tools here has an easy way to set the boot or shutdown sound
Boot and shutdown sounds as well as qmg animations have been disabled in custom ROMs AFAIK. If you really need it bad, the official factory ROM will work.
I appreciate you being the only persn to respond but that is actually false. I dont have, any qmg files to mess w. I have already made a working boot ani and its zip. Not qrm. Plus alot of roms use .wav files for boot sounds....

You should have no problems inserting a poweron.wav into system/etc and have it execute upon boot up. I have created my own start up and shutdown both with and without voice and they work fine. Just make sure it is in the correct format.
Oh heck, I must have tried the wrong places. Cool! Was thinking it's /system/media/audio/ui or /system/media/audio

I have the stock bootanimation.zip. I'll upload the file when I get off work. Just drop it into system/media/ named as bootanimation.zip. As far as the boot sound goes, nobody to my knowledge has had any luck with that. Everything I have tried to restore custom/stock bootsounds has failed.
Thank you very much!

Minor difficulties. The bootanimation.zip file I have for the true stock animation is corrupted and I'm not having any luck fixing it.
I've attached two alternatives though. The first file is the SGS bootanimation that has been optimized for a smaller screen. It works fine, but it is smaller than it would normally be.
The other is a modded version with a BIOS boot intro followed by the SGS boot animation (full sized). In my opinion, its pretty freakin sweet. Credit to specialex and LitePro. This one is their work, not mine.
Either way, download, rename to bootanimation.zip and drop it into system/media folder using root explorer or a comparible file manager app.
Thanks man. The BIOS style one looks sick. It seems that you can restore a bootsound through SGSTools, but when I set a random .ogg notification sound as the shut down sound, it played it in a never ending loop. I'll try and tinker with it some.

Yea, I had no luck working with SGS Tools and the boot/shutdown sound changer. It works great on stock 2.1 w/ root (I tested it the last time I flashed back to stock- rocking the "droid" voice on boot for a while).
Unfortunately, it never worked for me on custom roms. Even tried .mp3 and .oog files instead of .wav just for the hell of it. I think the issue has to do with the playlogos1 file that the devs modify to kill the default shutdown/startup sounds. I'm going to try SGST again though... its been a while and that app has been updated 4 or 5 times since I last tried.
Well, I found the shutdown.ogg file from the JH7 OTA .zip file and yes, it did work through SGSTools! If I find the original boot animation in one of these folders it'll be back to stock appearence Now whether or not I want to do that is the question hehehe....
EDIT: Turns out only the shutdown sound was working. Im doing a Rom Manager backup now, but my plan is too remove the bootanimation.zip file and restore the factory playlogos and playlogos1 files back to system/bin and see what happens.
EDIT 2: Well that didn't work... I found two other files called bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg and seeing if those work.
EDIT 3: No luck there either. I wonder if it is possible at all to restore the boot animation and sound, and what the developers did to remove it. Its very interesting...
Here's a copy of the stock bootanimation.zip. Credit to whoever I got this from. Personally I like the BIOS one
For those wanting to change the boot animation on your Thunderbolt, here is a quick tutorial. Remember that you do this at your own risk- I take no responsibility. It is fairly simple though.
1. Download your preferred bootanimation and place on the root of your sd card.
2. Rename to "bootanimation.zip" (without the quotes of course)
3. use root explorer and navigate to the /system/media folder OR /system/customize/resource folder for VirusROM (I think)
4. rename the "bootanimation.zip" to "bootanimation.zip.old" and "Finalthunder.mp3" to "Finalthunder.mp3.old"
5. Next navigate to your sdcard, and find the bootanimation.zip file that you downloaded and renamed.
6. long press and choose copy
7. now navigate to the /system/media folder on your phone and toggle to mount R/W
8. Then just paste the bootanimation and done!
9. Reboot to check out your new boot animation
I will be trying to reach out to several devs who have made boot animations and see if they will let me post a link to them here so we can have a centralized place to get anims from. Will update as soon as I start hearing back from those devs.
How do you change the boot sound?
I was able to change this right after root by using the same methods as I used on my DINC. But I want to replace the boot sound as well. I have tried renaiming to thunderfinal.mp3, android_audio.mp3, and (VZW_) something .mp3 to no avail. Any suggestions or success?

rename it to:
thunderfinal.mp3.old
and it "should" work. at least it worked for me. if you change the bootanimation, just add ".old" after .zip
FYI - I don't think that is the correct location - at least it's not on my Thunderbolt. Check here: /system/customize/resource and find the VZW_bootanimation.zip.
I replaced that with one of my choice and it's working fine. The sound is there as well: FinalThunder.mp3.

It depends what rom you are using. The debloated rom has those files placed in media. I am running the debloated rom now.
Where can I download other boot animations?
In xda there are a ton of boot animations. Just use the search. I put "boot animation" in the search tab and got a ton of results.

If you are running Debloat then its in the /system/media folder.

The stock rom is:
/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip
Same as EVO not DINC, DINC called it VZW_bootanimation.zip
I've been working on a few of my own boot animations. The problem I found is that when I dropped in my own boot animation and left the finalthunder.mp3 right where it was. It no longer played the thunder sound?? I assumed that changing the name of finalthunder would make it go away otherwise it would play no matter what.
So why did it stop playing when I didn't touch it?
**EDIT
Duplicate post. Sorry!
Maybe the sound is tied to the original boot animation through a script or other file...not really sure. I am going to play around with it this week and see if I can get the sound working as I have a couple ideas myself. If I find something that works I will be sure to post back and let you know.

changing Stock animation
I'd like to know as well. I can't see anywhere in the VZW_bootanimation.zip where that file is even referenced...
Of course, I'm not exactly a scholar in this area. I just want to use a custom sound with my custom boot ani.
Thanks!

*UPDATE*
I extracted all the stock folders from the zip, I changed 1 PNG (the quietly brilliant splash in the 'android' folder), rezipped it and put it back on the bolt. When I rebooted the screen was blank BUT the finalthunder.mp3 STILL played... and there was no animation.
I kept the PNG file name that I changed the same as the original... not sure why it stopped working tho. {Note - I rename the zip (attached) after I have it on my SD card. then move it to the system/customize/resource.}
hey guys, having some problems making mine
i was able to make everything but i get no image. I made 120 jpg files for the VZW folder and placed them in their.
I then customized the HTC screenie for the android folder, and finally in the progress folder i placed a .gif (which i didn't think was a problem).
I also placed the desc.txt file as well, zipped it up and placed in in /system/media. No dice...
Anyone else having an issue or has had this issue and knows what i need to do??
edited because
Anybody got any cool boot animations running on their Tbolts yet?
Awesome this worked great. Thinks for the instructions.
okay, i need some assistance, I'm trying to make a fairly simple boot animation, but NONE of the animations ive used have worked I am obviously not doing something right, but not sure what
I can't get this to work either... I'm running DaBamf ROM and put these files in the system/media folder to replace what was there and all I get is a black screen and no sound at all... I haven't messed with the stock location of these files yet, so we'll see...
Ok this is a weird solution but it has worked for me.
1. down load the link below and flash it. When it boots up you will get the famous rick roll bootanimation that jcase put up on April 1st.
2. Go to /system/media/ and replace the bootanimation.zip with whatever bootanimation.zip you want.
3. If you want to add custom boot sound you have to name it android_audio.mp3 to replace what is there. If you don't want any sound delete the existing android_audio.mp3 or you will get Rick Astley every time you boot.
That has allowed me to change bootanimation and get custom sound each time I have replaced the ROM. If that works for you thank me and enjoy.
I have tried through clockwork, sys tools, and sgs tools no luck no start up or shutdown sound.... I run Ubuntu on my laptop so ogg is no the problem neither is wav any ideas. And yes I know nooB question, so shoot me....

Lol sorry if this is a noob answer but is your phone on silent? I think putting system volume high or one of the others will get the boot sound and off sound

I assume you ar on a custom rom so The startup sound I believe won't work at all, the ability to support bootanimation.zip somehow breaks it.
The shutdown sound is located in /system/media/audio/ui you can use adb, or the easier way would be to use a root file explorer, and drop it in manually it should be named shutdown.ogg( Make sure the system is in rw and not ro for either method). I personally use root explorer but it cost I couple dollars, astro file manager will do the trick for free I believe.
So Studacris I tried creating a new startup.wav and shutdown.ogg with no sucsess.

Like I said the startup won't work ... I just made a shutdown.ogg this morning for myself (jabba the hutt laughing) ... What exactly didn't work? You sure system was in r/w?

He wouldn't even be able to move it if it wasn't in r/w lolol.
My guess: he moved it at the wrong place?
had to zip it because i couldnt attach a raw ogg file. this is NOT cwm flashable!! extract and place manually.

well in root explorer there is a prompt about read only when pasting when in r/o, and also a prompt about overwriting an existing file in r/w if one was there, ive made the mistake of thinking the ro message was the overwrite...
but there shouldnt have been anything there to overwrite, its named shutdown.txt by default thats why it doesnt play ... maybe he just renamed an mp3 to shutdown.ogg without actually converting or maybe it was too long?
Well I indeed placed it in the correct place there was no start up or shutdown files (except a shutdown txt file) so no notification to write over exsisting file...... when I start up I hear air, so to speak, from the speaker bit no desired sound. Using root explore, all I really wanted was my ubuntu login sound and triple chrome shutdown, and special thanks to you studacris you always seem to help me out...

startup sounds should work on ursa minor kernel. andromeda had one.
I've done a few searchs to try and figure this out on my own, but I've been coming up short. I'm just trying to get a custom boot animation on my Sprint Tab. I'm comfortable removing the stock animation and audio. I can't, however, find anyway to add my own. I've tried renaming the custom animation to bootani.qmg with the stock one deleted out. When I boot up, though, it shows nothing still and boots up with no animation. Not asking for someone to reply with a written out guide, but a point in the right direction would be awesome.
Thanks!
Get your new bootanim (usually called bootanimation.zip butbif bit not, then rename it to that) then move it to system/media. Reboot and you should have been new boot anim

That's the issue. Thought that's all I needed to do, but after trying that exact method repeatedly with different animations and bootanimation.zip files, it does not work for me.
I've tried renaming the file bootani.qmg, bootanimation.qmg, bootani.zip, and bootanimation.zip.
The .qmg is the sound file so you don't need that. What video format is your animation? It isn't just the name that has to be correct, its the format and file size too.
I would suggest using the DukeNukem boot file, since we know it works, to verify the process, then go make a custom file. And be sure to post back with your results!
That would make more sense. I just sorta assumed maybe it was searching for a file name and not finding it. Will try once more with the suggested boot animation and let ya know!
DukeNukem was also a no go. :/
I don't have a sprint tab, but the system folders and files sound the same as my at&t tab. What I did was create a folder and moved the boot animation.zip, and the .qmg files in there, then moved the duke animation into the system/media folder.
Okay, so I've been trying to get the Android Vs Apple Boot Sound to work with the Boot Animation.
What I've done, Installed a Sound Binary from Boot Animation Changer, Renamed the sound file to Android_audio.mp3, And placed the file in /System/Media/Audio/Ui, With the Permissions Rw-rw-rw
Nothing.
I checked the Default.xml file, to see if it points to the file.
<BootAnimation animation="/system/customize/resource/htc_bootanimation.zip" audio="/system/customize/resource/android_audio.mp3" />
</BootConfiguration>
So i placed the Sound file into System/customise/resource/ and yet still no sound,
I suppose I'm a noob, so if anyone can help me out that would be great, thanks.

Are you running ics or gingerbread rom. Boot sound goes in phone-system-media folder and must be named Android_audio.mp3. Did you also mount bootsnd.sh thru terminal emulator for gingerbread rom. Boot sound don't work on ics roms as of yet. Don't know if non release of source codes has to do anything with that.

You need to load the bootsnd.sh file and reboot for it to work. I'm on the road but if you go over the inspire thread and go to theme section and boot animation request page at the end page I have a link to my drop box there that has the file and installation instructions if you want. It should make sound work after reboot. Just unzip copy bootsnd file to root of SD and type command in terminal emulator. If you don't have term emu go to market and download it its free.
Edit: Oh OK good.
