I was trying to switch to Cognition V.2.3.8 using clockwork recovery like was shown on that thread. I did everything correctly and everything worked exactly like was explained. I got to where it was loading the zip in clockwork mod and it froze. Now my phone only gets the ATT screen when turned on and it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to just the recovery screen, but the phone is cleared, nothing will boot, all info was wiped I'm assuming that's including the previously flashed version of cognition. I tried Odin but couldn't really get it going. Not sure what to do. I used Odin for my last ROM, and clock work recovery didn't go quite as well obviously. Please someone give me some good news, and help me unbrick my phone.
Have you tried doing any of the three button combos to get into download mode and restore to stock possibly?..if none of the buttons work, you might have to make/use a jig to get it into download mode. Anyway, just try getting into download and try to restore to stock for now.
Your phone needs to be in "Download" mode to use Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Scroll down to step 1 and try those "Key Combinations" until one of them gets you into download mode. Once you are in, flash back to stock with Odin. Hopefully that works and solves your problem.
If no key combos work, then you need a jig. My phone is one of the few that don't work with the key combos, while my last 2 did fine.

Like the others stated you need to be in DOWNLOAD MODE to get Odin to work.
Also there is a specific method to get Odin to recognize your device and then flash it back to stock:
Turn on ODIN first.
Do NOT have your phone plugged in when Odin is started.
Make sure your phone is powered off.
Hold down the Volume +/- Buttons on your phone then plug in your USB cord. It should go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE and Odin should state that your phone is connected.
Click the Go button and watch Odin do it's magic.
If that didnt work....
Try the "Battery Trick"
Unplug the phone from USB - Power it off.
Pull the battery, SIM, and SDCard (if applicable) from your phone.
Turn on Odin
Plug in the phone to USB Cord (with everything still out of it)
Hold down the VOLUME +/- Buttons
Then while doing all this - pop the battery back in the back of your phone.
Rinse and repeat a few times if it doesn't go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE to make sure you are doing this correctly.
And if THAT doesn't work.
Do the jig (Build a jig - there are a ton of posts here in the Q&A and Q&A sticky on how to do this.)

Here's how it happened:
I was trying to swap Kernels by following instructions on cognition thread. I flashed the stock kernel and tried to apply the update.zip, and it gave me errors. I tried to reboot and the ATT screen came up and wouldnt boot. I was able to get it into download mode using adb, so I flashed the JI6 kernel. Now it won't go into download or recovery mode (just ATT screen).
Here's what I have tried:
- volume up/down + power buttons. released power button and recovery mode wouldn't come up.
- with power off, pressed volume up/down. Did not enter download mode.
- power + volume up. got a screen saying power reset or unknown upload mode?
- tried just hitting power and letting it sit for a long time to see if it would boot, but it just stays at ATT screen.
- adb reboot download (with device plugged into usb) - said device not found.
Is there something else I can try to get it into recovery or download mode? I figure I can flash the stock PDA if I can get that far. Is there something that a phone repair shop can do (special software, etc.) to help?
Any help would be appreciated.
Jason.
Have you read the READ ME BEFORE FLASHING sticky on the dev forum?
But.. try this:
Turn off your phone.
Take out the SIM, any external SDCard, and Battery
Plug in your USB Cable
Turn on Odin 1 Click - OTA JH7 Back to Stock
Hold down the +/- VOLUME Buttons on the phone.
Pop the battery back in - should go directly into DOWNLOAD mode using this method. If it goes to the gray "Battery Charging" picture.. unplug, take out the battery, and try it again.
And you had USB De-bugging turned on before you were doing all this (I'm guessing yes) Hopefully the above works.
BTW whenever it goes south like this .. better to just go back to stock and try again rather then potentially making it worse
thank you! That got me into download mode. I was able to flash back to stock. I was scared for a while.
Jason.
NP.. next time though read the Q&A sticky - should point you in the right direction a lil' quicker
And if you plan on to keep flashing new ROMs? Def go there first it should point you to different posts to keep you from having this issue in the future.
Ok i was running a custom version of 2.2 FroYo on my captivate and it was running fine. I backed up my old version using Clockwork Recovery. Well i decided to get brave and flash back to my stock 2.1 ROM.
When i did that alls i can get is the AT&T boot screen. It will sit there for an hour if i left it. I tried entering recovery bode (power, vol up/down) but it just sits at that screen.
Is there any hope to recovering it? I use a MAC but im about to boot Win7 on it to run ODIN, but i cant get into any flash/recvoery mode....
Suggestions?
You want to try and get into Download Mode, not Recovery. Have you tried the various button combos to get into Download Mode yet?
If the various button combos ultimately don't work, you can use something called a JIG to force your phone into Download mode.
What is the button combo for download mode? also with is 'JIG'? Im no total newb but i am new to this who flashing/kernel modifying thing.
I have a Nexus S now which i love but i need the Galaxy running for my AT&T company SIM card....
Also do i NEED ODIN?
There are like 4+ different button combos for Download Mode. If you search, I'm sure you'll find them all. The one I remember is:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone off
3. Hold Volume Up/Volume Down keys, do not let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery into the phone
If this worked, the phone should almost instantly be in Download Mode.
Once in Download Mode, you want to use Odin (generally the One-Click JF6 version) to flash your phone to a working state again.
A JIG is a microUSB plug that will force your phone into Download Mode, if Download Mode is still possible on your phone. You can make them with a MicroUSB plug and resistors, or buy one. The link in my signature is an example of what a purchased one would look like.
I am running Firefly 2.05. I was attempting to reset with odin. I started my phone in download mode and I forgot to enable usb debuging. Odin of course wouldn't recognize the phone. I couldn't get it to power off so I pulled the battery. Now when it starts I have a black screen with a computer and phone icon with an exclaimaton point in the middle. I can't get the phone to boot up. As far as I know the OS wasn't changed; it's just permanently stuck with this logo on the screen. I tried downloading this sdk and adb won't recognize the device either. Is there anything I can do? Thanks...
Heres what you do.
1) Pull the battery so you KNOW the phone is off.
2) Put the battery back in
3) Hold down BOTH volume keys at the same time. Do not let go and do not touch the power button
4) Plug in the usb cable while holding down the volume keys, the device should turn on and go into download mode
5) Start odin and go about your business
Followed the directions exactly and get the same phone with a computer and an exclamation point.
Try the above, then try the steps in this video.

If those don't work, my download JIG will. It's only $10 with free shipping. You can buy one HERE...
Thanks for all the help guys. I think I am going to need a JIG. Did I need USB debugging for the Odin clear or is just being in download mode all it needs? When I did my initial install of Firefly the Odin one click and master clear worked fine, but I can't remember if I had debugging mode on.

Click to collapse
Download mode doesnt even know/care if debugging is on or not. so, no.
Are you sure you are holding both volume buttons down all the way?
Also, make sure your external sd (if you have one) and SIM card are taken out.
Make sure that the phone isn't plugged in when you pull out the battery (the phone can stay on without the battery if you are plugged into the computer)
Not really sure how this could have happened by just pulling the battery while in download mode if nothing was being done to the phone at the time. Yesterday, while I was trying to get odin to recognize my phone through a VM I must have pulled the battery while in DL mode at least 10 times and had no problem)
Edit:
Proper odin steps:
1. Install drivers for your os given in the original odin3 post (or the computer won't recognize your device while it's in DL mode and therefore will never get to odin)
2. Open odin3 (needs to be open before you plug in the phone)
3. Turn off phone, unplug from charger/computer and pull out battery, SIM, SD cards.
4. Replace battery (phone should still be completely off)
5. Hold both volume buttons and plug in the usb cable to your phone (should already be plugged into your computer)
- Need to keep holding the two volume buttons down tight until the download mode screen comes up (should be pretty much instantly) -
Those are the steps I follow to the letter whenever I use odin (about once a week)
build a jig yourself, or buy one. it will get your into the download mode.
I managed to get it into download mode. Odin shows a com port but the start and master clear options do nothing. I click the button and they grey out, but nothing happens as far as download progress. Any ideas what to try next?
Did you try multiple ports
I finally got it working. It required a JIG to get it into download mode and then starting Odin as windows administrator allowed it to finally do the flash and master clear. Thanks for everyones help; I really appreciate it!
I had been using my Captivate for a while, and used Kies mini to upgrade to Froyo, and everything had been working fine until randomly the phone wouldn't boot.
It would take forever to go from the AT&T home screen, and would lag through the galaxy s intro, and then stop.
I tried to use Recovery mode, and it didn't work, so I tried to use Odin3 to flash back to stock.
Now it won't go past the Logo screen, and recovery mode doesn't work, but download mode still does. I have tried Odin one click, and Odin three click v 1.0, 1.3, and 1.7. I've used the .tar and the .pit from Breakin' Ranh's [Guide] How to Recover a Captivate to Stock 2.1 Eclair JH7
It keeps getting stuck in a boot loop after odin, no matter what I do.
Any suggestions?
Using SGH-i897
1007
first boot takes along time to build new files and delvik.. are you sure you waited long enough?
keep trying to get into recovery. try holding the buttons a little after the screen comes on.
factory wipe/ clear phone/
It keeps going to the AT&T logo screen for like 10 seconds, and then goes to the spinning wheel/battery charging screen, and then reboots.
Can't get into recovery mode through it, still.
a different .tar package.... dunno about that one..
or flash to 2.2 tar package
I have to use rom manager to get to recovery on my captivate
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I was able to use a dragon rom to get it to boot, but now my phone wont give me any access to my internal sd card, and won't mount my external, so I can't download rom manager because I "have no room" Where do I go from here?
I've already tried formatting both cards, and it seems like nothing happens whenever I click on format.
you dont need rom manager....ever
Then what does he need?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
stuck in the same position
I can get into download mode (only with a JIG tho) but when I go back to stock with Odin (or try to) it's just stuck in the AT & T logo screen, it doesn't go beyond that, how do I get into recovery mode, press both Volume buttons and Power button, when the AT&T screen comes release the Power button right?
Need some help please!
you might need to flash the 3 button fix but keep trying, if you get into recovery clear data and cache. but first boot always takes a long time as it has to build delvak cache and more... try flashing again, with the 3 button fix att rom.
3 button fix? to get into download mode you mean? I CAN get into download mode (with the jig) but not into recovery mode :-s
I have no idea how to flash it without being in the Stock rom, any help?
download is 2 buttons
recovery is 3 button.
some phones loose the 3 button combo to get into recovery.
in that case you need to flash the stock rom with 3 button fix.
it is for Att only so i dont know much more.
After Odin, I was in a boot loop yesterday. I plan on writing it up in a new thread to see if someone can help me understand what happened (cause I have Odined and modded two different cappys without issue) but here is how I was able to recover.
After Odin was complete and said successful, it reboots the phone.
Upon reboot I was in the ATT boot loop. After Odin, I lost both three button recovery and 2 button download (both of these worked before Odin). I don’t have a JIG so no way of getting to download mode.
I read to try the following sequence after reading it other posts.
1. Pull battery, sim, SD card and unplug the USB. Let it sit for a minute.
2. Plug in the USB cable.
3. Holding all three buttons, plug in the battery.
4. The battery charge (grey) should be seen on the phone. After the phone screen goes black twice let go of the power button.
This worked for me once, after several attempts.
Now that the phone booted back up, I did a master clear with Odin.
Upon reboot right back in to the ATT boot loop screen.
Was not having any luck with the steps above after several attempts.
Here is how I eventually recovered.
1. I opened Odin on the PC.
2. Pulled the battery and USB for a minute or two then replaced it and plugged in the USB cable.
3. After few cycles of black battery icon and spinning wheel, the batter icon turned green (like normal when you turn your phone off and plug it in). Sometimes this only took two cycles and sometimes many cycles (or a few minutes).
4. Once the battery icon was green, I hit the power button.
5. As soon as you see the ATT screen, pull the USB cable and the phone booted (if I left the USB plugged in, the phone went back to the black battery screen after the ATT screen).
6. I copied the correct Update.zip and Rom to my SD card.
From here I tried to boot into recovery via ADB.
The phone rebooted but back into the ATT boot loop.
Following the second set of steps above (2-3 times), I was finally able to get into Clockwork recovery.
From here I flashed Phoenix Unleashed.
After the flash rebooted and the phone seems to be running fine now (with the exception that I lost my 3 and 2 button combos, but that will be for a different thread).
From the Power Menu, I can get into download mode or Recovery no prob.
Not sure if this is something that will work for others but wanted to throw it out there just in case.
It never booted for me, so this is what I did
For anoyone that might find this thread, Odin 1 Click didn't work for me, so I flashed back into stock using Odin (not the 1 click version, another one), here are some links that proved to be very helpful (I ended up Flashing to Serependity 6.4):

Used this version of Odin to get me into recovery mode:

I have a captivate model SGH-i896
I want to flash custom rom, it seem I screw that up some how.
Now I cannot get back into Download mode
What I did is I trip on the cable when I was trying to flash I897UCJH2 when using Odin.
Only thing I have on Odin was I897UCJH2 and 512.pit
I have try all type of combination on the the phone, button first, battery first, cable first.
What should I do now, short of returning the phone to Rogers and get another one?
Did I hard brick it because I897UCJH2 contain a bootloader?
Please help.
Some extra info: My phone can still be detected via usb, and during Odin the device still show.
Pull the battery, use the button combo you usually use and when that screen comes on and odin detects it try and flash from that screen.
can you explain the steps a little more?
this is what I did.
-open odin
-hold down vol up+down + power
-plug in usb
-put in battery
in that sequence, and that did not work
you may not see the dl mode screen. that is just an image in the firmware, if the flash was disconnected before that image was loaded to the phone the only image there for it to call on when dl mode is started is the phone...!....pc screen. so if odin recognizes it when in that screen try and flash from there.
if that still doesnt work i say make/buy a jig. they are never not a good idea to have.
