From reading various voodoo lagfix threads I got the idea that it makes your SGS ridiculously fast. I want to install this on my phone, however, I have one of the fragile I9000m versions of the SGS from Bell. Is there any stable release for the voodoo lagfix for this combination?
Firmware - 2.2
Baseband Version - I9000UGJL2
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #6
Build Number FROYO.UGJL2
As you can imagine, I am quite unfamiliar with rooting and such. I do not trust myself with mods as last time I did the Bell Froyo 2.2 update through Kies and my phone had to be sent to repairs because it was bricked. Any info that would shed light on the situation would be great.
Please Help
Any help from fellow Bell SGS users would be greatly appreciated. From the Voodoo Project website, could I install the update through recovery mode or will that cause a huge problem for my phone?
If you are running JL2 you should be alright. They seemed to have resolved the majority of internal SD problems. Just read instructions VERY carefully and you should be fine. The easiest way to install a lagfix is to head over to the Android Dev. forum and download and install one of the Kernals. The Voodoo-based ones will automatically lag-fix for you when you reboot.
I recommend hardcore's Speedmod kernal. It has lagfix options (disabled by default) but is very user-friendly to install and use. You basically flash it then boot into recovery (volume up, home, power) and enable the options (including lag fix) you desire.
Thanks dpvu!

I am in a pickle here. I want to try this as my first custom ROM made especially for bell users.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846237
However I am on froyo with JK3 which has a 3e recovery console. Several threads on the board point me to this kernel to enable 2e recovery console which is required for this custom ROM install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
However it doesnt appear to me that this can be used by jk3 users. I am really new to this and have spent several hours reading. Am I wrong or am i missing something ?
My phone reads as follows:
PDA: I9000UGJK3
PHONE: I9000UGJK3
CSC: I90000BMCJK3
FIRMWARE VERSION 2.2
KERNAL VERSION 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1
Any help would be much appreciated. I have read over 200 pages on the forum tonight alone and I am stuck
Thx
A lot of people have been there You have 2 options:
1) Flash an older firmware known to use 2e. The easiest thing to do is probably flash JH2 using Odin. JH2 was the last 2.1 official firmware for Bell. Get it from samfirmware.com
2) Flash a kernel that allows you to run clockwork. Check this post of mine where I installed SpeedMod on JK3.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9777680&postcount=53
I don't know what others would say but it might be better for your app data to stay with Froyo 2.2. In that case, go with option 2. Be sure to backup your data just in case
Good luck with that ROM. On my phone, I'm running his Doc RomMOD v2 (JPU) and it's great!
what am I missing ? I thought that if you have jk3 on your phone you could only apply jk3 roms and kernels? is that incorrect ?
Some, kernels and root solutions are not compatible with all firmwares. If you're not concerned with data loss, I believe you can flash any firmware you want (ignoring device specific requirements).
The options I described above are ones that worked for me.
I was talking to someone yesterday who had done a few changes to their I9000 to make it work alot quicker and when compared to mine it was super fast. I was wondering if anyone could guide me though how to make mine a bit quicker - he said something to do with rooting it etc.
Phone is samsung I9000 galaxy s, on android 2.2
Thanks for your time.
Could you provide more details about your phone so someone can help?

morning all. I too have been looking at rooting my phone, but being a newbie to this i dont want to brick my phone.
What details are needed about our phones are needed?
Ive been reading up on this 3 button reboot but it doesnt seem to work on mine unless im doing something wrong?
As the same as suts81 i too have the i9000 with froyo 2.2
The 2.2 samsung roms have an inefficient driver for their rfs filesystem which causes lags. This has been corrected in the 2.2.1 roms. Rooting by itself does not speed up your phone, it just allows some apps have more rights.
So you could try flashing a newer rom with the odin flasher software if kies does not offer you a firmware update. Most important is that you check that your 3-button recovery works first, because it is essential if anything goes wrong during flashing.
If you dont want to flash a complete rom you could also just flash a kernel like speedmod, which incudes the newer filesystem drivers.
There are threads dedicated to flashing and enabling the 3-button recovery, look there for more information.
Concerning additional information: go into settings, phone information and post the values from the fields model, firmware version and baseband version.
Hope that helps.

I understand I probably need to 'flash a new rom' to rid the lag, but is there somewhere that explains it in more detail as the only ones I can find look like they are written for people who know what they are doing with this stuff lol.
Thanks
I found this one, can someone tell me if this is going to help with my lag problem?

the K13D page wont load up but the K13C will, will this be good enough?
From rooted speedmod to unrooted non-custom kernel
Hi I have the international galaxy s.
I9000DTJP3
kernel version: hardcore speedmod k13c 500hz #24
build number: FROYO DTJP5
Firstly, I have rooted using Super One Click
And I changed my kernel after reading instructions from this forum.
I now want to undo what I've done and go back to the original phone
(and later maybe update to gingerbread)
I've spent a lot of time reading through this xda forum and finally I make my own thread and ask directly.. Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched almost everywhere.. Maybe its my lack of professional vocab.
1. I'm guessing to unroot, I just click 'Unroot' on Super One Click but will this affect my speedmod?
2. I have the 3 Button Method installed but I don't know how to safely test if it works. Just do the 3 button combo and if it works, go back by simply taking off the batteries?
3. So if that worked all well.. I would have an unrooted speedmod phone. How do I remove this speedmod? Stock roms? I don't know what they mean.. is it the default firmware? do I have to flash it in? If I install that would that automatically replace my speedmod?
Thank you.. I would really really appreciate your help thank you..
haha! I`ve got similar question,
I`ve root my SGS using the One Click, did the 3 button fix, and to my surprise manage to flash the speedmod k13e 500.. currently this is my build *#1234#
I9000DXJPE
I9000DXJPB
I9000OLBJPA
a few days ago, i read doc`s kitchen rom and download the cooked rom with this configuration
*NEW* ZSJPK v11.1 WIPE
CSC : XME
Speed mode kernel
DXJPB Modem
2.2.1 jpj browser etc with tweaks, custom bootanimation and mod sound
so my question can I just use the recovery update.zip to install the rom?
p/s I`ve no idea what I`m doing but it look fun to mess around the phone so I`m a beginner that knows nothing but I could read if that matters
I dont know if it will effect the speedmod but if you just flash the stock rom I think it will replace it.. just imagine if you are going to change from one kernel to another or update to a newer version what will you do? just flash it and badaboom the new one will replace the old one.. so it is a similar process..
Just one question.. if you have the EXT4 lagfix you have to undo/disable that first am I right?
To get back to original ROM, get your version from http://samfirmware.com.
If you used any lagfixes disable them before flashing (because the stock-kernel does not support ext4-partitions).
Flash the firmware (PDA, MODEM, CSC) with odin (repartition not ticked).
To verify the 3-button-combo works just power of your phone and then press "Home+Volume-down+Power", then it should enter download mode.
Hi all, so I recently sent in my I9000M Bell Vibrant to the service centre in Montreal to get it fixed (it had a fried internal SD) and they sent it back to me with a replaced motherboard (that's what I'm assuming because the phone's mac address changed and the internal SD is in working order now) but as a result the phone is no longer unlocked, which is a problem because I'm not with Bell.
They shipped the phone back to me with 2.3.3 installed, kernal version 2.6.35.7-I9000UGKG3 and I was wondering if anyone could help me root this thing so I can get it unlocked. I looked around the forum and tried SuperOneClick which didn't work and was unsure of where to go from there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
try flashing one of the kernels designed to install root e.g. Chainfire's kernel (basically stock plus root)or Hardcore's kernel (custom kernel but very robust) -- as you are on KG3 you will need a kernel designed for 2.3.3, not one for jvr or jvs.
Both CF and HC are very good at listing all their kernel variants with the right number of the firmware.
Flash using Odin with the kernel as pda, HC especially has some some clear instructions posted. It will leave you on KG3 stock rom and CSC.
You can also jump some steps, flash stock JVR as pda, leaving your KG3 modem and CSC in place, then flash a more recent JVR 2.3.4 version of either the HC or CF kernel or one like Damian's if you want to move further away from stock.
There are some further questions and answers in the thread on KG3 -- Bell users finally got a GB modem but not the latest GB firmware yet. Some have chosen to customize and go with thelatest firmware, some just wanted to root and stay on stock KG3.

hi did you ever figure out how to root this? i'm tryign to figure it out too
I have the same question.
I have the same question. All I really want to do is root the phone and keep the stock GKG3 kernel. However, I can't find a tool that works on the Bell i9000m running this 2.3.3 version of Android.
I've tried superoneclick and the Gingerbreak tool from Chainfire but nothing works.
Is the only way to root this to update the kernel? I was looking at the CF-ROOT downloads and not sure which one I would use if I used this option.
Kernel
thanks igsshedden. I found Hardcores kernel for the i9000m here

Will try and post my results.
Think it was cf-root 3.7 kernel that I flashed with Odin to get root then from there tried a bunch of roms now I'm using what's in my Sig and its wicked

I flashed stock jvp gingerbread with odin so the phone became an i9000, instead of i9000m then you can flash a rooted rom,I then used Galaxy S Unlock from the market to unlock. took a lot of figuring but it worked. good luck

Hi
I just tried upgrading via Kies from my current old config, but it advised that my phone couldnt be upgraded... The current set-up is (as per Kies):
PDA: JPO
Phone: JPP
CSC: JPO (VOD)
From Settings, it says:
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband version: I9000XXJPP
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #14
Build: FROYO.XXJPO
I want to upgrade to the latest best featured stable software, custom or stock, that provides good battery life and best features. I'm not averse to custom kernels as I understand they provide cool additional features such as BLN and optimised audio etc. What would be the best latest ROM/Kernal set-up to provide what I need?
I originally flashed the above via Odin, so I'm comfortable doing that. With respect to the Speedmod lagfix I have installed, do I need to disable that? I can see a disable option to disable in CWM.
Is there a simple step by step that I can follow to get the latest software on without screwing up my phone! I've backed up some apps using Titanium Backup and have my SMS /contacts backed up to SD, so I'm ready to rock and roll...
Thanks in advance

Most devs include the steps you should take to install their rom on their relative threads. i would recommend Darky's rom or Milky if you want something very stable and with up to date software.
i doubt you'll have any trouble installing them.
Good luck!
by the way, you should disable any lagfixes before installing a new rom, or use the kernel cleaning tool.
Have you tried the stock firmwares from Samfirmware.com?...

It's usually better to disable lagfix before flashing a new rom. You should first ensure that you're on a stock rom. If you're not, flash the odexed JPO rom to go back to stock. From there, you'd want to upgrade to a gingerbread rom. Download a gingerbread rom that has bootloaders and flash via odin. After that, you can easily flash newer roms like JVR, JVS or JVT. JVS and JVT are newer (2.3.5) but have more bugs than JVR (2.3.4).

Hi
Thanks for your note. Can you clarify the process for me (I'm not great at doing this stuff!)... I think I quite like the sound of Milky's ROM/Kernal. So following your advice above...
1. Enter CWM and disable the lagfix
2. Download and flash odexed JPO. I still have the JPO file that I put on my phone via Odin (named: JPO_JPO_U_JPP - about 280mb in size). Is this the right file? If so, how do I flash it? (am guessing via Odin but in which section (PIT/PDA/PHONE/CSC) and what do I put in the rest?)
3. Download Milky's (assuming I want Milky's ROM and Kernal etc)
4. Install via Odin
5. Restore all apps etc
6.
If you can help clarify my (mis)understandings and add in any steps I have missed, it would be really helpful.
Thanks

2) I don't know if that's the stock one, but you can find the stock JPO from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
3) Since Milky is based on JVR, it would be safer to flash the stock JVR rom with bootloaders via odin first, before you flash milky's rom. You can find the stock JVR here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195335
Then, flash Milky's rom, but check to make sure there are no other special instructions for that rom.
All the other steps seem to be fine. So, basically, you flash 3 times. First time is to go back to stock JPO, second time to go to stock JVR and third time to go to modified JVR, which is Milky's rom.
Thanks all for your advice.
I took the plunge yesterday and installed Milky's without installing the stock ROM's (not the right thing to do I know!). I did disable the lagfix and reset the ROM to stock within CWM.
Anyway, luckily it all went really well (following Milky's detailed instructions with the package) and I was on the new software quickly.
The phone is set up nicely now, so I'm pleased it went so smoothly.
One question - I understand I can fiddle around with the voltage and processor speed. Is there an optimum level to maximise battery life without performance suffering?
Thanks again!

If you want to overclock, it's pretty safe to use apps like Tegrak Overclock to go to 1200MHz. The extra 200MHz will not really affect battery life. Also, you could check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250442
