I have a rooted, with Z4root, Captivate with Froyo 2.2. I'm trying to flash a ROM using ROM Manager. I download the ROM, I DONT unzip it, put it on my SD card, then I use ROM manager to install it. The phone reboots into recovery, I select 're-install packages' and it does a little something and it says: "E:signature verification failed Installation aborted."
What now?

Signing files is no trivial matter. I haven't done it but I'm sure the encryption scheme required may not be a small task.

I can't get it to install.
I have version 2.1, with superbeast that I used for the rooter.
I followed all the wiki instructions for the cognition, but it is not working.
The first time I tried using the rom manager to load cognition, it worked, but it would never go past install multi-csc.
Now I am trying it again and it won't work at all, it just stays on the screen when I try and reboot it.
Not sure what to do, should I name the cognition folder to update, and just do the volume and power button update way?
have you tried using odin?
Not to be "that guy" but this doesn't really belong in the Development section. There's a whole other section devoted to Q&A, and you should have this moved there.
Why the heck is this not in the thread devoted to Cognition??

it would be best to run titanium backup on your current setup so that you can get your apps back, but install cog from the odin.
Hey guys I have a rooted captivate running froyo. I want to try the Cognition v2.3b3 rom with lagfix, but I no idea where to start. Do I need to flash back to stock or can I just load the rom? Also I was wondering about overclocking, can I do that with this rom? Any help is appreciated. I am new to android, came from a unlocked iPhone this is way better! Thanks guys

you should be able to flash over but it is considered good practice to start from stock, also i think you need ji6 froyo before jj4 froyo which cog2.3b* are based on, so the accepted proper procedure is masterclear and flash jf6 from the one click installer get android id with android id changer, flash ji6, also a one click installer, and then flash cognition. all with odin. you can clockwork recovery flash cognition but it is another proceedure to root ji6. after cognition is installed reinstall android id changer and load the id from the stock rom.
i usually flash over without lashing to stock ect unless the flash over has issues. and overclocking is handled in the kernel you need to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828052
with odin, no .pit file needed just drop file in the pda slot and flash in download mode. overclocking is enabled by default so you need set cpu to manage it.
there is a link to an app to manage under volting, my settings are -50mv low and -75 high. it also handles the scheduler, i use cfq. anticipatory seems to work eqaully well. some suggest deadline and it may be better real world but i dont see it in benchmarks. and real world is too subject to placebo effect and coincidence.
this kernel also has a universal lag fix handled in clockworkmod recovery which replaces the stock recovery. best setting for that is no rfs jfs overkill but in the advanced settings disable bind to dbdata. it's fast! 17.299 mflops in linpack, and it's the first time that i have had a lagfix improve a linack score(at least it appears to)
Here is the steps that got me from ji6 2.2 to cog.
First if you don't already get titanium back up and back up all of your apps you don't want to loose and copy the file to your computer and remove external SD card if you have one.
Then i used the 2.1 version of odin one click to go back to 2.1 after that do a master clear then root your phone and down load rom manager. Using rom manager flash the clockwork recovory mod.
Next download cognition 2.3b3 then go back to rom manager and select install rom from sd card and find your cog rom you just down loaded and it will do the rest
Once cog is on your phone you can put you titanium backup file back on your phone and redown load titanium backup and restore all of your apps.

If you have clockwork installed, you can install over any rom. I would clear data to be on the safe side, though.

no you cant. it will only work if he has 2e recovery kernel. if it was the ji6 leak then it is running 3e recovery and no matter how hard you try, it wont boot into clockwork.
answer:
use the ODIN version of cognition. doesnt matter what rom you are on...
Ok so I am trying to flash cog via oden. I downloaded the file and am looking at the how to on the wiki but, in the wiki it says that all the files will be in the download Odin.exe PIT.pit PDA.tar PHONE.tar CSC.tar. The only files that I am seeing are the pda file the odin.exe and the pit file none of the other ones. Is this normal?

Cool gonna do it now. Will post results
Ok just flashed and that went well, but it wont let me open any apps. For example when I try to open up tibu it tells me I have to force close. I also dont have 3g
i dont know if there that is a common issue, but im sure you will need to reflash. you may want to flash to stock.
it's a multi step procedure and annoying but it is usually safer , i guess i got lucky.
i dont know for sure if you need to flash ji6 before cog 2.3b, design gears may have fixed that, i didn't read the details of why it was needed.
i would;
(optional)master clear, remove sim and sdcard. you will loose everything including titanium backups and posibly nand backups. master clear is done with the phone booted normally.
flash jf6
flash cognition 2.2 by meathod of your choice (so you have root and clockwork recovery)
flash cog 2.3b3 in clockwork mod recovery.
I don't know iflosing every thing is worth it for me, I really do want to flash this rom and try it out, but right now seems risky, I flashed back to froyo that I was running before. I thibk I'm going to do some more research and see what I can find. Thanks for all your help guys
Just a quick question,
I did some searching around the forum and I didn't have any luck so maybe I wasn't searching the correct build or maybe there was a link I missed. I'm just wondering if there is an untouched version of FRG83D available for flashing?
Thanks.

You can extract the stock image for FRG83 from here: http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/signed-passion-img-FRG83_0923.zip and then apply the FRG83D update from here http://android.clients.google.com/p...signed-passion-FRG83D-from-FRG83.ecb21b75.zip (via recovery)
You are just trying to get stock FRG83D, right?
If you just want the update...
Kaiba provide the FRG83 to FRG83D update zip. If you're on FRG83, just rename to update.zip, place on root of card, and flash via recovery.
If you're on any other ROM, follow the unroot/restore guide in the wiki...

Tried that.
I am on stock FRG83 using Amon_RA 1.7.0.1 and getting

E: Verification Failed
when trying to flash.
(downloaded from the two links above getting the same file and the same results)
Ideas?
Thanks..

The original poster's question, and my question too, is how do we upgrade a stock, rooted, but otherwise untouched (e.g. not deodexed) N1 from FRG83 to FRG83D.

Agreed. I'm not looking to flash a "stock" rom. Just upgrade my stock FRG83 to 83D.
You need to be using Amon_RA 1.8 or higher (or the latest ClockworkMod) to flash a Google-signed updated. Any earlier version and you will get a signature verification fail.
Download the FRG83->FRG83D stock update.
Install Amon_RA's 2.0.0 recovery.
Turn off signature verification in the recovery.
Flash the stock update.
You might not retain root. If you're unrooted - reboot to recovery and flash superboot. If you lose the recovery too - then root again using SuperOneClick or whatever.
Thread of 2 pages... Can't believe it.
Thanks efrant, Jack_R1.
Will try soon.

All done. Now on FRG83D.
Lost root, lost recovery + had to get rid of /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Wasn't too bad, but a full stock rooted rom would be easier.
Thanks again..

I thought it was odd how there was no clear answer till you came.
I did what you said, i have Amon's 2.0 recovery installed, disabled verification, and tried to flash the zip. I got a Status 7 error, assert failed: apply_patch_check
I also got errors with Amon-Ra 1.8.0 installed.
FRG83 produced errors because i deletet some stock apps like browser.apk. I found here a modified update.zip and could update.
This time with the org. FRG83D update.zip i get the same error. But i cant find a modified zip here....
Can someone help or missed i a thread with the modified zip?

Are you running a stock ROM? Is it deodexed? Did you delete any apps? If you are trying to flash the original signed update, for it to flash, you need to be running a stock, odexed ROM with all the original apps still present.
Hey everyone,
I rooted my nexus one when it was 2.2, now im trying to update to 2.2.1. However the OTA update wasnt taking, it failed and the installation aborted everytime. I search forums and found one saying to factory reset my phone, which i did. Saved everything with titanium backup. Now im stuck with:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernal version:2.6.29-01117-g4bc62c2 android-build apa26#1
Build nuumber: EPE76
One problem is i do not get an OTA update to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1. Also i did a manual update with signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip and it fails and installation aborts. How can i get back to at least 2.2, but preferably 2.2.1.
Also when trying to restore my apps from titanium backup, it tells me my phone is not rooted, but I still see the little "padlock" unlocked when i boot my phone.
Thanks, hope someone can help
John
What recovery are you using?
fastboot, then recovery, used a zip i downloaded from another forum that gave me build epe76. just renamed it to undate.zip and let the phone do the work.
What recovery are you using? Stock? Clockworkmod? Amon_RA?
i guess just stock, all i do is fastboot the phone and hit recovery
Have you tried ROM Manager?
yes but i am getting an error that my phone is not rooted. Although it is, the padlock is open when i boot the phone. If I root it again will i be able to install 2.2?

There you go.
Unlocking the phone is one thing. Rooting is another. You need to root it over again, but it should be easier this time since you do not need to unlock your bootloader.
ok i will try but before i do should i upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1 first then root it again? Because that was my problem originally, i rooted it when it was 2.2 and could not get do the OTA update to 2.2.1 to work the installation aborted with an error every time.
No, root the phone first. Then you can put whatever the hell ROM you want.
It's like putting your pants on first, then your shoes.
Yeah root first cuz most of the custom rom already jumps to 2.2.1

Hey Everyone,
From my reading of posts everyone seems to recommend flashing back to stock before flashing a custom ROM.
The Captivate I obtained from Rogers already had 2.2 Froyo. Will I be able to flash a custom ROM as is (since I technically am at stock) or will I need to downgrade to 2.1 using the 2.1 Rogers ROM posted on the wiki?
Thanks in advance
No, you should be fine to flash new ROMs onto it. Just root yourself, get Rom Manager, put ClockworkMod on it, reboot into Recovery, and you're done!

DISCLAIMER: I don't know anything about the Rogers Cappy.
The US at&t Cappy running 2.2 has 3e recovery which checks signatures on a file you are trying to flash. That is why venomio recommended installing Clockwork. However, it might be easier to use Odin one click to go back to 2.1 and flash from there. Then you do not have to worry about trying to get ClockworkMod installed on 2.2 (it is not a very straightforward process).

follow all the advice in the wiki, i re-wrote it last month! read! learn! brick! and learn some more!
you have 2.2 so you have 3e recovery with signature verifacation (mentioned in wiki) that is the only extra hurdle you will have with flashing over 2.2. you will have to fix that before rom manager will be able to install clockwork. **after you have a custom rom with clockwork built into the kernel you wont need to reinstall rom manager.
