E-reader apps preferences - Nook Color General

Hey guys. I plan on using the NC for 75% tablet and 25% e-reader. Now I'm more likely to read magazines then books. Which app is better for magazines? Which has a better selection? So far of course theres Nook, then Kindle, and I was just reading about zinio.
If it helps, my preference in mags are Maxim, SI, and other stuff like that.

Good present

Hey so I am looking around for Christmas gifts for my mom and I think I may get her the nook. So basically my questions are what are the good and the bad of the nook completely stock, and also what apps if I get it should I get her to start off with.

Stock nC:
Pros: Reads Books & Magazines, PDFs, & Kid's Books are great. Browses the internet. Pandora Radio. Plays some video, picture and music formats. Has 'LendMe' feature.
Cons: Books & Magazines cost money (quite expensive imho). Browser is slow and limited. Pandora is a limited\outdated version. Not all file formats supported. Very limited app support at the moment (until nookDeveloper gets going). Stuck to B&N experience look\feel\theme.
Rooted nC:
Pros: Reads Books, Magazines, Comic Books, PDFs, basically any and every format of ebook and file format. Better browser experience (full browsing experience). Youtube and many other apps. Games like Angry Birds etc etc. Many apps from Market are working. Widgets and Live Wallpapers. Better device customization (theming and overfall look and feel). Still have access to all B&N applications\services etc.
Cons: Sometimes crashes. Not everything works. Interfacing issues that require 'Soft Keys' and many other fixes. Only reliable Google apps have been Google Reader and Google Books for now. Lots of things still need patching and fixing. Possible 'bricking'
My mom asked for a nookColor by name for Christmas (well she asked for a nook, but I opted for the better version). I am debating whether I want to root hers or not.. I am really considering it...

If it was my mom, I would root it then load it with apps, music and books that she would like.
Buy one.
Root it.
Keep it for yourself and buy her something from bed, bath and beyond.

is the nook color a good choice for girlfriend?

I am always into the gadget with the most mods available and possibilities. I'm trying to find an ereader for my girlfriend though. Is this a decent choice? She mainly wants to read magazines and I might want to play Angry Birds now and then.
Seeing its price, screen resolution, and functionality, it's absolutely perfect for her, if those are her main requirements. The magazine reading app that B&N supplies is really top notch.

I don't know enough about tablets and ereaders I guess, but if I were to get a generic android 2.2 tablet it wouldn't have this magazine app? I'm assuming there is no other device in this price range that does magazines well? Can't really afford an ipad right now. Think it will be hard to find a nook color in the Bay Area next week?
I don't know for sure as I don't read magazines digitally, but I read something around here about the Nook for Android apk NOT working for magazines, just books while the NC DOES do magazines.
And from what I have read everywhere, for the money there is no better overall device it seems.
I did give my NC a quick run through after I got it and it seemed overall a pretty well done job by B&N. Of course my time with it unmodded was only a couple of hours...
If the primary use was to be JUST an eBook reader I would probably say something with a B&W eInk screen would be better, but for anything with image content and color- NC would seem the best thing out right now.

What's unique about the B&N is that it integrates the subscription process with the magazine reader. I don't mean they're the same application...they're two...but they work together well. If you tried to use another device, you'd have to figure out:
- how to port the B&N magazine reader app to the new device
- how to download copies of the magazine issues
I'm not saying don't do it, it's just more work. FYI, I just took a quick peek and many mainstream magazines seem to run $2-$4 per month for a 12-month subscription.
The NC is at Walmart too now, by the way.
EDIT: well, turns out the magazines are stored as epubs in the NC's internal memory: /media/B&N Downloads/Magazines. Easy to find, and I was able to make a copy and view it on a PC.

"is the nook color a good choice for girlfriend?"
No, I think your first choice should be a real girl. The Nook Color is great, but it can not compare to a real girl as a girlfriend!!

If she likes to read magazines, that's where the NOOKcolor really shines.
I think she will like it. i prefer the NC over the e-inks, with brightness down it is comfortable to read in dark, i read it well in sunlight also. i would have had to spend extra $20 for light for Nook 3G, so, NC and all it's extras for $30 more? win

Once hacked into a tablet, I can run the Kindle app right?

I'm going to be picking up some business related books in a few weeks from amazon but then i saw an ad for the Kindle which brought to remember the Nook Color being able to run as an Android tablet. Just wondering once it's an Android Tablet it's pretty much a generic tablet and I can run any app on it just like my EVO 4G right? I'm on CM7 Final with my EVO right now also.
Yes
It can run any app that is in the Android Marketplace, including the Kindle app.
I have a nook with CM7 and have the Kindle app with several books.....use it daily without problems.
There is a Nook app too; this way you can have BOTH. Take that Kindle!
For me, the best part about the NC over the Kindle is that i can download ebooks from my public library for free.

I concur, but then again, that's why I have an original 3G nook. As much as I love my NC for checking email, surfing the web, and reading journal articles, when reading actual novels and long stints of text, I love e-ink b/c it doesn't stain my eyes and I can read longer w/o draining the battery.

I used to think that reading the nook color would strain my eyes like it does when I'm reading with my LCD, but so far it really hasn't affected me. I think the the flash before a page turn on e-ink annoys me more now that I've been reading with the NC. I guess it's different for everyone
At present the Nook app for Android has some significant drawbacks versus the Nook Color application in stock Eclair. (Some books can't even be downloaded.)
Are there any similar downsides to using the Kindle app for Android versus using a real Kindle?

[Q] What do you guys do with books and magazines

What do you guys use for books and magazines?
nook, kindle, google books, zinio seem to all have different books or magazines.
Do I really need to buy a book or magazine from each one and then remember which one I used to purchase that specific book?
Is there an app that will let me catalog all my books and magazines from all these services together?
Kindle all the way. Comixology for comics.
I think it's also a matter of buying from one seervice and sticking to it. Now that I have a full library from on Kindle, there is no reason to go to Nook.

that's exactly their plan...
no non-standard fileformat for me, vendor lock-in only hurts the costumer!
for comics/mangas you can use Komik, Mango or on of those stores like Comixology as there not an official file format for these things...
but for books, you can use epub files (the standard) with several programs, mainly Aldiko and Nook (that supports some kind of side loading too). Aldiko currently does pdf files too, (that can be used for comics, magazines, almost anything...) but there are several other options too.
ezPDF Reader for most and Google books for everything else(mainly bc I love the 3d view/although I would love a bookcase.)

Its the opposite here. For me its Nook al the way. I started with the Nook color rooted, fell in love with having an Android tablet so I sold it and bought the Xoom. Until recently I really missed having the nook because I was subscribed to all my favorite mags and newspapers. Luckily the last nook app update allows us now to have those back. Nook has more features that I enjoy like books that read themselves to my children while helping them learn to read, etc. I'm Pro Nook!
Magazines - ezPDF Reader
Comics - Comixology or Komiks
Books - Moon+ Reader
I also have Kindle installed for when I am in the mood to purchase something from Amazon. However I usually prefer to use the free libraries included with Moon+ or buy new ebooks from some of the smaller online stores that really need the support.
As for Comics, I use Comixology for new stuff and Komiks for my collection. I really wish Comixology would carry Marvel comics as well (or create a seperete Marvel app), as it does on the iPad.

Well the Nook is about the only platform that can match the kindle, both are good.
But to me, the reading experience on a tablet is not as good as on a dedicated device with eInk

A plus of the kindle is that you buy once and read on everything you can think of.
I use Moon+Reader simply because I have a sony ereader and just transfered all my epub files over and I don't have to do anything with them. It has a nice bookshelf and a night time or day time screen.
Nook for books and magazines
Reason - Nook is the only app i've seen that lets me side load epub files, has a cool page animation, has dual page viewing, and has the correct fonts. Meaning, when Tucker Max is yelling through his blow horn, the book displyas the font bigger and bolder than the standard font. Nook is the only app i've seen that actually does this.
Mango for Manga
Reason - Streaming and downloading of literally any manga you can think of. It's absolutely amazing.
Perfect Viewer for Comics
Reason - Great library view, fast, reads every comic format, page filtering options, dual page view, quick buttons...on and on and on, it's really an incredible app.

[Q] Any way to side load non-B&N apps without rooting

I know this may seem like an odd question, but let me explain. Since getting a 10" tablet (initially a TouchPad running ICS, but my wife bought an iPad3 for me a few weeks ago) I only use the Nook as an eReader. I really like it in that role, but I also still find it kind of unstable in all but stock form. This includes rooted stock 1.4.2, CM7, and CM9. For the most part this instability takes the form of SODs.
Anyway, the other day I reverted to stock 1.4.2 and think that will work well for me given how I use the device now with one exception...over half of the books that I read are for Amazon Kindle Reader, not B&N Nook. Of course, I can read these on my iPad, but I do like the form factor and portability of the Nook for reading. I could root 1.4.2 again and stick with the stock kernel to avoid SODs, but in a perfect world what I'd like to do is just flip the config setting that tells Android to allow external apps to be installed/run and leave everything else stock. Then I'd like to put on just the Amazon Kindle Reader app.
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this without committing to the full rooting approach?
Thanks!
Nope, you would have to root.

If
SOD's come because you've let the unit go into deep sleep with WiFi turned on...
And
You are only using the NC to read Kindle books...
Then
Rooting the NC then turning WiFi off after you've loaded the Kindle app will avoid the SOD's.
Yes?
Why not convert your Kindle mobis into epubs with Calibre. Short learning curve, and good results.
Check out page 4 in this thread. It works

another vote for "download your library using nook for pc, convert to an open format" - works great for me.
I'm not a big fan of reading (or listening music or watching movies) online. I'd rather convert all my paid ebook to pdf, epub, mobi, or whatever the format is then save them on my local eMMC or uSD.
Thanks for the info! I've actually decided to get a Nook Simple Touch Glowlight for my eReader duties and sell the Nook Color. I've really enjoyed the NC while I've owned it, but at this point since I really am just using it as an eReader, I like the digital ink display, battery life, and form factor of the NST for that dedicated purpose.
