Using your computer and usb cable, remove the battery from the phone. Plug the pc side of the cable into your pc. Put the battery back in the phone. Hold the volume up and volume down buttons. While holding the buttons, plug in the phone side of the usb cable and continue holding. You should be in download mode within a few moments. View my clip for a how-to video session on this...
Reply if this worked. It SHOULD work as you have soft bricked and this is a way of entering download mode during a soft brick of the phone.

Did you try the volume button method with plugging in the USB cable into the phone while it's plugged into the computer? It sounds like you are just doing the volume buttons plus power button method. The JiG is for HARD bricks which doesn't sound like it's what you have. Although it will work for SOFT bricks also.

First post, been lurking a while though. I actually had the same problem, and fixed it this way last night. Took me about 30 tries and lots of sweat before I figured it out though

how long did you hold the buttons up and down after you connected the cable? iv held it for 2 mins and nothing!
Ugh. This is the way to do the button combo:
Step 1 remove the battery, open odin3 the one click jh6.
Step 2 plug in the usb and hold the volume up, volume down, and power.buttons.
Step 3 put in the battery and release the power button but keep holding the volume up/down buttons.
Step 4 press download. This puts the phone in download mode. I found this method when I had a soft brick. Umyou don't need a jig since you can still boot to the white screen. This will work.

I will try this method, as I am in the same boat as the others here. I have already placed my order for the USB Jig but am hoping that this method will work.
However, under step 4, you indicate that you "press download." What do you mean by this? Where is the "download" button? On odin3, the only buttons I saw were start and master clear. Is the download button an option on the Captivate?
To my knowledge, there is no "Download" button on ODIN or a Captivate in a semi-bricked state.
Edit:
If those directions don't work, you might also try a method I've had success with.
1. Remove battery, SIM card, and MicroSD (if you have one) from the phone
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone having no power source
3. Hold Vol Up/Down, don't let go
4. Insert battery
5. If it worked, in a few seconds you should see Download Mode

I posted some suggestions in this thread...
good luck, dont give up
Axura CE RC2.1 w/ excalibur 2.1.6, ugjk4 modem, Voodoo, BlackFroyo theme
I think Im really screwed I have done everything that has been posted previosly and nothing seem to work. as soon I connect to my computer odin3 dose not do anything it's as though nothing is connected and my phone goes to that empty battery with the frozen loading star or what ever its called, it also does that when I connect it to the AC outlet.
Still waiting on the jig to arrive I think thats my last hope!
Why doesn't anyone use adb to get into download? The only time you HAVE use the 3 button is if you get phone!Pc screen. If your phone can get to the att screen, open command prompt, change directory to adb tools location, and type adb reboot download. Do all this before you hook your phone up to the computer. When you're ready connect phone to pc, turn it on, right after you see the att splash screen and hear that your phone is connected press enter.

how do you use a adb to get into download mode? is there a link you can hook me up with instructions I would really appreciated it.
Hello.
I was playing around with a few different roms for my captivate when something went wrong and now the phone will not boot. I can't get into recovery mode or download mode, either. I've tried the button combinations, thinking that once it gets into download mode I could restore it using Odin. When I turn the phone on, it stays at the at&t screen.
Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks.

You are removing bat and sim external sd before putting bat back in correct
Sent from my SCH-I897 using XDA App
Try:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone off
3. Plug in phone to computer via USB
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go
5. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery
If it worked, you should almost instantly be in Download Mode. Step 2 where you wait for at least 10 seconds seems to be critical (for me at least). If I don't wait for at least that amount of time, it won't work.
And when you've exhausted every other option, you can always try to build/buy a JIG.
I am removing everything from the phone.
norcal einstein, I tried your steps, but it just shows the battery icon with the loading wheel.
What rom where you on last, and what were you flashing to

Hi all.
I accidentally plugged-out usb cable when i had used ODIN.
Now when i power device up, i can see only small icon (phone connected to pc) on the black screen.
it there was to recovery my device?
Do a battery pull to turn the phone off, then
try to see if you can get it back into download mode by holding vol+/vol- and plug in the usb.
If that doesn't work you may need to make a jig.
try doing the up down volume thing + power**, for me, once i screwed up my phone relly bad i had to hold that down for about a minuet or two before it came up. and the phone kept restarting like 5 times while i had it held down. SO dont be discouraged if it doesnt come up right away, keep trying it / holding it down for a minuet or two.
That's what's known as a soft brick
Not a HUGE worry. Take a deep breath and do as these guys said, you'll be fine

Like nickm50 said, pull the battery...hold vol+/vol-(NO power button), plug in the USB, insert the battery, then release the vol+/vol- buttons. I soft bricked yesterday and this method put me into Download Mode no problem.
vol+ and vol - did help me, thx guys
you may need a jig just in case:

Hello everyone!
I have a serious problem with my Wi-Fi Only Galaxy Tab. It came with Froyo out of the box and I tried installing GB via ODIN but in the middle of the process, my computer turned off because of a blackout and my tablet was in download mode with the big "DO NOT TURN OFF" warning. The process wouldn't resume after I got my computer back on and I had to turn off the Tab. The problem is that now it won't turn on, when I press the power button (long enough, about 10 seconds) the LCD turns on in black and if I let go of the power button it goes back off. Tried connecting to the PC but nothing happens, tried charging for more than 4 hours and still got nothing.
HELP PLEASE!

So to get this straight... you cant go into downloading mode or recovery? Even if it doesnt display it on the tab... try holding power and volume down while odin is open (reinstall the drivers too) If that doesnt work then I believe you sir have a hard brick and have messed up your bootloader. If that's the case i just saw a post about a service that fixes them for 50$ somewhere on the gt7 forums...
Just go to download mode again and reflash. Don't forget about battery.

If you are using the TMobile note you have to make sure the USB cable is plugged onto the device as well as the computer then do the necessary hold. I think you have to hold both volume down and up and power button then when phone reboots let go of power button

As illest_one_7777 just said. Make sure your USB cable is plugged in to the phone and PC. Then do the hold buttons thing. Just had this problem a few minutes ago and it works perfect with cable plugged in.
I had the same problem and realised that I have to use the usb cable that came with phone, any other cable will cause the issue that you had.
Try to do it with the usb cable that came with your phone, this solved my issue , hope it does yours.
I use an old PC program that I found here on xda, called aio vibrant tool box. Turn on USB debugging and boot to download mode straight from windows, its worked on every Samsung phone I've used. Hope that helps..

Yes, well sort of, it will put you into download mode the rest is up to you having Odin installed properly, and the correct ROM to flash.

Download Mode Success
I had success getting into Download mode by having the USB cable connected and holding down BOTH the up & down vol. buttons while also holding the power button. Released power button only when I felt the first vibration during boot and still holding BOTH vol. buttons.
If I did the same thing without the USB cable plugged in, It would boot to Recovery instead of Download mode.
