Moving from Cognition 2.3b7... any recommendations? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

2.3b7 was my first non-stock "adventure". It went well and I've been pleased with the rom and phone. Now it's time to freshen things up. Any suggestions, pros/cons of other roms I should consider? Thanks for your insight and help!

cog 3. It seems to work with a wide variety of phones and doesn't have the browser issues that every other current rom I've tried has.

Serendipity. It is excellent.

Firefly/Phoenix both great.
But there are alot of great roms....treat it like a playground and flash away...thats really the only get a truly informed decision.

Come to the ROM in my signature Its fast and battery friendly, and supports many themes too.

What is the most stable ROM?

I've tried a few ROMS out there and was wondering which ROM for the Captivate is the most stable and works with most peoples phones?
The obvious answer would be the stock ROM. But that's probably not the answer you were looking for.

Yeah I meant the most stable DEV ROM. Like SRE, etc....
I'm quite fond of SRE and a lot of other people seem to be too. It takes off the crap and provides lots of useful features and fixes.

Sre is good if you are starting fresh, it includes everything, if you have already messed with rooting and the overclock kernel or other non stock kernel you might prefer unleash the beast. Or simply adding each feature.
The vanilla roms are works in progress, but once they put the pieces together for the hybrid version I think the devs will have a greater understanding of everything and we'll see performance that's unheard of.

Thanks, I flashed with SRE and love it so far.

I had SRE 1.21a on mine and i liked it a lot.
Tried out Eugenes hybrid r3 just for the sake of trying it out, and its a bit different, but its fast as hell. I like it a lot.
I didnt have any bad crashed or random reboot issues or any of that.
as of now the GPS on eugenes hybrid build does not work, but I dont use GPS anyway, so thats not that big of a deal to me.

[Q] ROM survey

Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!
You can find more information in the ROM thread itself.

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.

What ROM Is Best For Me?

I am currently running Dorian's XXJPY 2.2.1 on my Captivate.
I was looking at some ROMs tonight and saw a bunch that sounded really great. Is there anything better, faster, more stable?
I don't want to overclock or do anything fancy, I just want battery life, speed and stability.
Thanks for helping a noobie at this stuff! I never knew the community was THIS big!
I just flashed Cognition 3.02. Look in the developer portion and read his mission. It looks exactly like what you are looking for.
It's generally regarded as one of the best. I like it a lot, and upgrading is so fast with clockwork recovery.
Please move to q&a.

If it is just speed and stability you are looking for then you should take a look at Cognition. The past week lots of nice ROMS were released so if you find Cognition lacking to your taste you can easily switch to something else like Perception or Serendipity. Phoenix is highly themed but still a nice ROM if that's what you are into.
Whatever ROM you choose, make sure you do research, it's impossible for someone to completely fill you in about the pros and cons of each ROM since they are changing in a weekly basis. And take your time following directions so you don't end up with an expensive paper weight.
Cheers and good luck.
Hard question to answer. My advice is just pick one to start with...you'll end up flashing non-stop once you start...trust me. I'm using Paragon right now and it's excellent.
Try a few and have fun!

Yeah it is funny cus this thread is just completely opposite
I recommend one with a thread with some hyperbole in the subject line (I realize this is a tall order, but it can be found with some forum searches for superlatives). I would also recommend one in which the developer recommends disabling voodoo lagfix when installing a voodoo lagfix kernel since voodoo lagfix is apparently incompatible with voodoo lagfix.

I second that (although I am a little biased)
Everyone seems to think it makes their phone faster
Woah,
Thanks guys!
Sorry I didn't include this in the first post but I'm actually using Dorian's UGJK3 FroYo - Gingerbread Edition. I really like the theme and the visual effects and I wouldn't want to give those up.
So my question restated is: What ROM would be best for speed, stability and battery life while having a nice visual style/theme?
I really like how the Dorian ROM runs and it is definitely faster than stock. I also love the theming and icons, ect.
Thanks. You guys are amazing!
Use serpendity 3.0 rom its the best one very minimalistic fast and has good battery life

The best way to find out is to test them all your self. No one can tell you what rom is best for you.

I'm sorry... I assumed (which is never smart) that this would be the correct forum. Would the correct forum be Captivate-General?
Thanks
You should just read through all of the Roms on the first page or two of the Dev section. Look at which ones have the most posts/replies under them and check them out. Evaluate the features list and browse through some of the more recent comments pertaining to them to get a feel of how well each one works and what they provide. Ultimately, which rom to use is entirely dependent on what you're hoping to get out of it.
What do you want it to do/not do?
Why are you looking to move away from Cog?
They all have their own ups and downs, it all depends on what's right for you.
I'm running Cog 2.3b6, myself, and thinking of upgrading to Cog 3.03. For what it's worth.
I used to use cog as well. I decided to change roms due to what I perceived as a rom problem, only to find out that it was more and likely a modem problem. I had really poor call quality and overall signal degradation.
I decided on the now no longer supported assonance and albeit all the "bells & whistles" of the newer roms, I do not have any interest on flashing a new rom. I have since flashed the speedmod kernel, which drastically helped with my battery issues and will flash a diff modem.

Went through a number of ROMs and settled on FireFly with SpeedMod kernel. Smooth, fast (no overclocking), good battery life, GPS fixes, haven't run into any FCs in over a week now... just a very solid performing ROM.
I would recommend serendipity but phoenix looks like the next best (never tried it though)

I'm not necessarily looking to move away from Cog... just wondering if there were any "runaway winners" that I should consider also. From the posts so far it sounds like there may be several worth considering.
What I'm basically looking for is an overall combination of speed (without overclocking), stability, functionality, and battery without any of the factors being stressed/tweaked to the extent that it significantly hurts any of the other factors (i.e., I don't want extreme speed if it means an unacceptable hit on stability or reduction in battery life, etc.)

[Q] New to Roms.. Which would be best for performance speed?

Let me just say.. I HATE the stock rom on the cappy. I always get force close errors and the phone always lags/freezes. I thought that when they released 2.2 it might get better. It didn't... Does anyone know of a rom that might be the best for performance speed so I don't have these issues anymore? I checked into Firefly and Cyganomod 7 and they both look really nice.
Also, is there a way you can preview a rom before you install it? I saw a thread about being able to do so on the HD2, but on that thread, they said that is the only phone you can do it on..
I'm sorry if these are kind of nooby questions, but I am a flashing newb and would like to get some help before I do harm to my phone..
Most people are going to tell you to read and I would also suggest that.... as far as roms go, phoenix, firefly, supernova are all very good. If you want something more like stock then there is cognition and fusion.
Just try to read up on the roms as each will be a little different.

Thanks Frank. I like the layout of the cappy stock, but it's just too damn slow for me..
Continuum is my choice right now. VERY stock look in the unthemed version.
Most of the roms have screen shots of their opening page(OP). As far as performance/battery life/etc, that varies with each phone and its user.
As a beginner, I (and so would most others)would recommend staying away from CM7 (and MIUI and Darky's). They are multi step flashing processes where just ONE tiny mistake can cause someone to start drinking again(after they pull their hair out).
Do research. Most of the roms have threads in the Development Section. Begin reading aboiut them from page 1. There is also a thread just for those new to rom flashing in the Development Section. READ IT.
Good Luck. If Ihave helped in any way, please don't forget about the thank you button.

If you ever need more help than reading, google Mobile TechVideos. The guy makes very clear vids on how to flash a ROM and also shows you different one (he has quite a few videos). I use Phoenix 7.3 myself and it's beautiful - Firefly and Supernova are just as nice IMO.
As others mentioned, really take time and read alot!
I personally like Paragon RC6....great fast, stable ROM!
Like said above, stay away from CM7, not for beginners, and still Beta!
READ...READ...READ the forums on the various Roms!
Thanks for the advice everyone. I found a sticky guide for flashing that I will use to help me. I also decided on going with FireFly 2.7. I just wish there was really a way to preview the rom on the cappy like you can on the HD2.
But again, thanks everyone for your help!

there is no competition with cm7 when it comes to speed.
its the fastest you'll ever get on your cappy.. you must try it.
if speed is the most important thing you look for, cm7 is the best fit

Yeah, as long as you don't mind a camera that almost works and not being able to mount your SD card, CM7 is it. Oh, and don't forget the crappy battery life. The guy is a newbie. Why would you recommend CM7 to a newbie.
Thread closed, since best rom depends in what suites for you.
