Seidio Innocase Surface Review (quick/dirty) - EVO Shift 4G Accessories

My previous phone was a Heroc and it was wrapped with an Otterbox Commuter case. I LOVED that case. It saved my phone on numerous occasions from physical trauma and liquid disasters.
Unfortunately, Otterbox doesn't have a case developed for the Evo Shift yet. Hopefully they will soon though: twitter[dot]com/OtterBox/status/24490743817052160
I'm not a fan of the fake carbon fiber of the case Sprint offers so I went with the Seidio Innocase Surface.
The case itself seems a little flimsy/thin for it's $29.99 price point. However, it does an adequate job of covering the phone. Also, there's about a 3mm lip around the screen so I don't have to worry about placing it face down. This matters to me because I'm not too fond of screen protectors. I've tried them for the iPhone and Heroc and in my opinion, they degradate the touch surface too much to justify their use. For the year I've had the Heroc, there is not a single scratch on the screen. I have the same faith in the Evo Shift now that it has a case.
After a couple days of use, the only con I can think of is that it does make it a bit harder to use the top row of the physical keyboard. I'm getting used to it, but I was definitely frustrated with the typos I would make during the first day.
UPDATE:
Per questions below:
The case feels just like the original plastic of the Shift's body, if anything it feels "softer". (That's the best adjective I can come up with to describe the difference).
Also, to completely secure the screen portion of the case, I had to slightly pry the screen up from the base to make the gap wide enough to fit the left side clips in between them. When sliding the screen, it is now noticeable stiffer due to this. I think this will be an issue with any body case for the Evo Shift, since there is no gap in the sliding mechanism normally.
I didn't notice this before, but the top right clip of the screen portion of the protector comes unclipped when closing the phone. From what I can tell, the sliding mechanism isn't as forgiving as the bottom so it can't wedge itself between the screen and the base causing it to become lose. Though more than 1 of the 4 clips would need to come undone before it would detach the screen portion of the case.
UPDATE:
I rarely use the FN/Shift so I didn't notice until it was mention below. The case does cover those lights above the keyboard.
Dimensions with case (L x W x T):
Metric: 122mm x 64mm x 20mm
Imperial: 4.8" x 2.48" x 0.79"
Dimensions without case:
Metric: 117mm x 59mm x 15mm
Imperial: 4.61" x 2.32" x 0.59"

Wow. I really like the look. Thanks for the pictures. I'm contemplating buying it...

Does the screen protector portion of the case feel like it is going to stay on? I had bought a case like this for my old moment and the screen part wore down in like 2-3 months and it wouldn't stay on taking it in and out of my pocket.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App

how is the texture? I like the feel of the shift's battery door, it is smooth enough to not rip your pocket out... but sticky enought to help keep it from sliding.

I haven't had an issues with that happening. Though I could see it being a possibility. To attach the left side of the screen portion securely, I had to slightly "pry" up the screen from the base so that the clips could attach. This does make the sliding mechanism noticeably stiffer.

It feels exactly like the original plastic, maybe a little "softer". I don't notice any difference when putting it or taking it of my pants pocket.

cool, thanks for the info. I'm thinking of picking one of these up. Now my main concern is if I'll be annoyed by the top row of keys not having much room. I already make most of my mistakes on the top row.

Thanks for the review, I was looking into getting one of these cases as well. I do have a question though. How thick is the phone with the case on?

Yeah, it definitely covers the LEDs for caps lock and function lock.
Try slightly sliding your keyboard in a tad to cover the LEDs and see if the reduced space bothers you or messes up your typing.

Thanks for the tip. Ill have to give that a try. Uh, I'm doing that right now, and I think I like it better this way. Is that weird?

I want to get a case for mine, but my biggest concern is making the phone thicker than it already is. I don't want it to not fit in my pocket.

Surprisingly the cases don't seem to make the phone much thicker. I'm still able to place the phone in the leg pocket of ky carpenter pants really easily. My Hero and my wife's Moment were both super thick with a case, but not the Shift.

Haha, it's a cat brush. I couldn't get the phone to balance on its side so I used to to hold it up.

I too am not interested in adding size to my phone.
I am most interested in the Ghost Armor product. All the protection, with no additional size.

I have this case as well for my phone, and i love it!!! doesn't add any really noticeable size to the phone and gives it the right amount of protection... great case

Case-Mate Barely There Review

Hi, first of all this is my first review at all
I´ve to say that this is in my opinion the best way to protect the camera and so save the smart design of the beloved hd2.
but ... there are some bad points I wanne mention,
if you want a case that you put on once and never/only a few times pull off, this is your way,
but if you do it like me peal off every day to put in a cradle you have to face some scratches on the original rubber on the hd2.
For me it was clear that i´ve to protect the camera and still have a sleak design.
The Case itselve comes in a plastic box with some micro fiber cleaning cloth and a screen protector.
There are no edges or bur that could hurt the hd2.
The whole case is covered with a rubber finish just like the hd, but i dont think so resistant (no scratches jet).
The screen protection is not so good, after two days there are a lot of scratches on it, so maybe I´ll peal it off.
It fits the screen nicely and there are no issues with the aproximate sensor
Here are some pictures right from germany to you
How did you manage to scratch the screen protector? What are you writing with?
yea ... thats the big question.. I´m writing with my fingers and this protector get scratched, many many little ones, but there are even big scratches on it, think my pocket does this.... by the way only the phone in pocket... I´ll take a picture for u
That scratch on the corner of your HD2, is it from pulling the case off and on multiple times? It looks pretty ugly that scratch, but case looks very nice.
I think many of us have a need sometimes to pull it down becose sometimes we must reset it by pulling the battery out :\

yes its from pulling on and off, but i think its not soooo ugly cause you dont see it if case is on
for me its more important to cover the camera

I've got the Silver mirror-finish version of this case - it's very nice
Might add however that it's ridiculously snug - just got it today and now having trouble trying to get the case off
Is there a reason as to why Case-Mate states it will only fit the International version? Not the soon to be released Tmobile version?

I believe the intl version is a tad taller if I'm not mistaken...
I have the case as well (silver version). The case looks really sleek on the HD2. Nice and slim just what I want.
However I find it extremely difficult to take it off. It's just too tight. Any tips to take it off?

Oh, Im having trouble to remove this case off also. For the 1st time, it already scratch the rubber on my HD2. Really looks ugly. I love the look of this case, but I dont want my HD2 to have scratch. Should I return it?

Yup, its a bummer I had ordered my case before getting the phone. O well, same exact thing happened when tmobile released the touch pro2. I order my protection before the phone because I dont want anything to happen to it, but then my protection ends up not fitting : (

T-Mobile HD2 is 1.5mm taller. Seems to be because of the logo on top. For gel/silicone cases it might not be a problem, but for hard cases and fitted cases - it is. It does not fit.
Barely any fingernails left!
I purchased the black rubber version and it is very unobtrusive and tight fitting - but that's my problem - it's too tight. I feel I am in more danger of damaging my phone trying to remove this case than actually dropping it! I am considering cutting slits in the four corners of this case to make removal easier. It's a pity because I really like the look of the case itself.

HTC hard case

I bought a blue hard case made by HTC at radioshack. It is nice but it makes the keyboard hard as heck to slide out.

Still, decent case for now.

I've got it too. I like it a lot. I've never been a fan of cases on sliders, but this works pretty good.

The back is like my favorite part of it. Makes setting it down very nice and secure.
Does it protect the camera lens well? My only complaints so far are the volume rocker and when I put the phone down face up, the camera lens rubs up against whatever surface I put it on.

Yeah the camera is back from the case so when you set it down its completely off the ground.

That's the case my g/f got for her Shift. I actually don't like how the rubber provides a little bit of resistance when you pull it out of your pocket. Do you notice that? Or am I making that up?
I'm holding out for an offering from either Otterbox (Commuter or Impact) or Seidio (Active or Surface).
I don't notice it, but when I pull out my phone my hand covers the back.
Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
Funny you post this actually. Ordered this same exact thing from un-heard of website. It was on back order though, and sadly sprint didnt have this listed when the phone first came out. Wish I ordered it from them. Would have been tons faster.
got my wife this case and hers slides out fine.
got two of these (wife and I) I'm really liking these cases, nice and snug, and I like that it holds the kb firm without stressing it (don't really use it anyway) most of the slider cases have those flimsy clips that hold it on, but these are nice and wide so they don't look like they'll crack any time soon. And yes the rubbery part on the back is very nice, gives it a solid grippy feel.

Known defects

I've searched the web daily to see if any defects arise but I've seen only one.
Battery life depleting rapidly
Besides that defect. What are other defects I should look out for that you have seen, heard of, or have/had with your moto x.
Also I've heard that the plastic around the screen grabs TONS of scratches because its glossy plastic(right?). One said after a month receiving a notable amount. Another zero to hardly any after a month.
I just want to know what to look out for when I get it. I'm gonna grab one when the Moto Maker is available for Verizon. I own the Galaxy Nexus and I know there are GNex vets in here that know the issues and defects of the Gnex. I have several HORRIBLE defects with my nexus and I wanna make sure I know what to look for when I get my X.
I am stock rooted and have had absolutely ZERO issues. Not a single random reboot, no battery drain, nothing. Google and Motorola took their time with this phone and it shows. No idea what people are doing to their phones to cause some of these issues. As far as the corners and edge of the screen scratching, I haven't seen anyone else mention that, and mine has been out of a case the majority of the time I have had the phone. The edge of the screen is not plastic. One big advantage to this phone is the fact that the Gorilla Glass 2 that is equipped with wraps around the device.
Its GLASS???? How did I not know! I follow this device closely on XDA and the Web.

A moto x. You can see quite clearly with the white face that it's just a normal pane of Glass that does not wrap around anything. And the right edge of mine where the glass meets the plastic is not set right and you can pull the plastic bezel to the side

I'd be willing to bet money it doesn't. On the left side of my screen you can't detect any joint where the plastic and glass meet. Multiple web sites have also confirmed that it's not the "magic glass" that was first reported but a very well put together phone. Look up the Ifixit tear down

It's definitely plastic around the edge. I love my moto x... but I'm really disappointed the sides have gotten scratched.
The scratches aren't huge issue, but I'm sad because it's the snap case that I purchased from Motorola that's caused them. The way the case snaps into place, there's actually a small gap where dirt/sand/whatever can get stuck inbetween the phone and the case. And if you take your phone out of the case while there's something there.... it will definitely leave a mark.
Another issue I've noticed is that on the back near the dimple, there's a small section my case doesn't cover.. and there's some discoloration going on there. It looks like the plastic has been absorbing finger oil and it now has a bit of a glossy sheen that won't come off.
Got a moto X from ebay with a vibration motor that rattles too much, it actually makes noise when typing. My other Moto X's vibration felt normal. I believe i've read somewhere that the Moto X's vibration motor is attached in some way that's not optimal, and from experience some Moto Xs are better than others at vibrating.
Other gripes with my Moto X:
-Activate Notifications: I keep getting the flashing clock while driving (Which should only happen when you pick up the phone.) It makes me think there's a new notification, when there actually isn't. Quite annoying while driving actually. (I keep it on my lap)
-Battery seemed better on my other Moto X.
-Headphone output seems a bit low. Higher than my nexus 4 and lower than my GS3.
Of course nearly everything else is delightful about this phone. Specially the screen and the deep blacks which complement a black-front nicely. Also surprisingly good accuracy with touchless controls.
Thank you guys for your answers. I've also seen around here lint/dirt can be stuck underneath the lens of the camera right out of the box.

HTC One M8 Dot View Case

I really want the Dot View case for this phone. Did anyone mange to get their hands on one and dicovered that they don't like it? Why don't youlike it and would you sell it?
I just got it today and I absolutely love it! The only thing I don't like is, when you flip it back then its a little slippery! But thats all! It fits great and just looks great on the phone!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have mixed feelings about it. When I bought my HTC One from Verizon, I was told that they weren't going to have the Dot View cases in stock for at least a month or two due to the high demand of them. Because of this, I picked up the Incipio Black Feather Case. Funny enough, the next day after buying I get a phone call from Verizon saying they got a single dot view case in being held for me. The case itself feels incredibly cheap. While it definitely feels like it can protect my screen, the backing of the case feels just like a cheap plastic. For the cost of the case, I was expecting something a little bit better in the build quality.
As for the case itself, its too gimmicky for me for the time being. It only works with default HTC apps. I use a different SMS app (Sliding Messenger Pro) and the Gmail app for my email. Neither of these are supported by the dot view case. I've tried googling around to see if there's a work around for these or a separate dot view app that allows these but have yet to find anything. The only thing I could use the case for was the time, answering phone calls, voice dialing, and changing my volume. I really wanted to be able to see my sms / email notifications on screen.
Im also not a fan of the folding case in general yet. I'm not used to the folding and I often text with one hand so it makes it rather awkward to try and hold the case open in order to text.
I don't know though.. if I could use my own SMS / Gmail apps with it instead of the default HTC ones, I might want to use it again. Until then, its going to sit on my desk unused.

I have been using the HTC Dot View case for about 2 weeks now. Here are some simple pros and cons
Pros:
Look...Seamless and perfect compliment to the M8
Feel...plastic and rubber that seems like a good build
Protection...Fully covers screen with rubber "dot" flap and plastic back wraps the back and corners of the metal body of the phone
Alerts...Easy to read 8 bit type text and icons (looks great in the dark)
Cons:
Price...I got mine for $50 at an AT&T retail store
Dust/lint...gets trapped in the "dots" find myself using a can of BlowOff keeping it clean
Alert Limitations...can only use the HTC apps with this case
I would recommend if you have $50 to blow. I personally don't like 3rd party accessories so willing to pay for the HTC branded products. I love my DotView case but trying to provide a unbiased opinion.
I just got mine in the mail a week ago. So far, I love it. I just hope that HTC releases updates to allow third party notifications like Gmail, Facebook, etc. I would also really like if they could integrate a music player controls as well. But all in all, it's a great accessory to such an amazing device.
Anyone with a warm black dot view? Is it black or grey? Also if you can post the part number (you can find it on box backcover)
Anyone notice a couple of holes are kind of shiny inside? Like something is on the plastic film that's in the holes. Anyone cleaned theirs yet? Would water and soap be ok?

don't poke or remove the peices in the holes it keeps the stuff off it screen and I just wiped it down with some water it cleans up quite nicely I wouldn't use soap some soaps kill pixels so yah... I think the idea behind the case is solid but its execution is flawed. Mine seems to loose its grip on the top corners as the plastic is too hard and needs a more grippy material. I've swapped 3 cases now. Its been mentioned before about the short hinge not letting the front sit flat on the back. I do love and find the display very useful. Hopefully a third party will be able to remedy the faults.

Yeah! I've tried compressed air and water but the 2 shiny holes remain. They always catch my eye when I glance down and I think I have a notification or something.
Anyone have the "Orange" dot view case? If so, is it really orange, because the images online look more like it's red?

ATM no but it looks like they are working on it. You will also lose Motion Launch and use of the secondary depth camera with CM

Be careful not to drop the phone in this case. Dropped it less than a foot onto the top left edge, left a dent in the black plastic bar on top of the phone.
Next gen Dot View should have a flush foldover. Biggest detractor for me. Love it otherwise...only a matter of time before features are ported to aosp and more functions are added (gapps etc)

May or May not help, I noticed the phone has an Dot View app installed. That may all that is needed to get it working on another ROM. Seems to use a NPC chip. That is what I'm guess is detecting when the case is opened or closed. The HTC on the front lines up with the Small box on the inside.
I willing to sell mine too as holding it with one hand it not an option with this case.

Thinking of buying it... need advice!

Hi guys!
I am in need of advice from you owners of the phone.
At the moment i have a galaxy nexus, and it kind of has done its job, so i was thinking of changing it with the moto X 2014.
My priorities are materials, dimensions and price. That's what brought me here.
The main reason i'm in doubt is because i've found an online website selling the white version, bamboo back, at 349 euros, which is a great price; but i'm more into the black front, which can be found on other websites, with the plastic back, at 430ish euros.
The question is: bamboo and lower price or plastic and higher price? Is the bamboo back really worth it? How does the plastic feel?
I've seen as many video reviews as can be found. Some say the bamboo feels fantastic, some say it looks like a sticker and gets easily scratched. What do you guys think?
On the other hand the plastic is said to have a good feel and not look like cheap plastic at all.
What is your opinion on this?
What's your opinion of the phone after a while using it? Would you reccomend it?
Thanks in advance, have a good day everyone ^^
check if both are the same capacity i.e 16 GB vs 32 GB has a considerable price differnece.
A lot of people have complained about the wood peeling off. It looks nice, but I have serious doubts about its durability. The soft touch plastic actually has a great feel to it, but aside from black I don't know what other colors have the soft touch. My first one was soft touch black but I exchanged it for black leather, which I absolutely love.
As far as my overall opinion of the phone goes- it's amazing. I've tried all the other flagship phones and there is no doubt in my mind that the X is the best smartphone on the market right now. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks a lot for your answer, it really helped a lot. Too bad moto maker is only available in America, anyway the black front black back looks really elegant
X 2014
I just purchased the Moto X 2014 Pure Edition (64gb). I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE which boasts a bigger, removable battery and removable storage. What drew me to this phone was the built in motorola software and the "OK Google" functionality. Overall I'm finding the battery to be a little lack luster; it doesn't hold up like my S4. However, the processor is quick and snappy, and the device overall has, in my opinion, a nice fit and finish. I purchased the black back with the dark silver accents. The phone has a nice weight, and it doesn't feel like it will fly out of my small hands like some lighter phones do. The metal on the rim and the black standard back are also both pleasing to the touch. The back plastic is almost soft to the touch; it isn't your standard shiny plastic. My fiancé has the previous generation Moto X with the dark wood back; one important thing to keep in mind, you're probably going to have this in a case to protect it. This renders the wood completely pointless in my opinion, even with a clear backed case. The OS takes up a fair amount of space, and I would recommend getting the most storage you can afford given that you can't expand it down the road. This phone, unlike the previous model, does not feel cheap in any way. I would easily group it in with S4-S5 quality.
I would encourage you to consider a phone with a bigger battery if you plan to fuss with it regularly throughout your day, or if you don't have a desk job where you can just leave it plugged in. But, otherwise, it's a great little phone with superb software, and I am fairly pleased with it thus far.
Here's my take.... I too had a Galaxy Nexus and then switch to the 2013 Moto X Developer Edition. Loved the Nexus with Paranoid Android. Loved the '13 X and its similar size.
Then I broke my '13 X and got upgraded to the "14 X Pure Edition with a Bamboo back. I have to say that it looks and feels really good. Of course its going into a case, but a clear TPU one. Just got the replacement in today and unlocking the boot loader tonight.
I'd say its a pretty decent phone if you don't mind the on screen buttons. I'm sure you mind coming from a Nexus. By the way, the radio in this phone is way better than Galaxy S4 that I previously owned too.

Yep, that was my first one, it was gorgeous. The only reason why I swapped it for a leather one was because my buddy was twisting my arm.
I have a white bamboo and a base model black on black. I have had no issues with the bamboo peeling or scratching. I'm actually on my 3rd bamboo phone because I had a clumsy week and broke a couple screens. none of them had peeling issues. I like the bamboo and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love it. the black plastic one is scratched and marred on the back already and IMO is not as scratch resistant as the wood. I left my real camera at work, but I will post pics tomorrow so you can see what I mean.
I have a bamboo one with a black front and love it. I briefly had an S5 but got bored of it as it was to similar to my old phone (S3) so sent it back. The Moto X is a real head turner with the bamboo back and so far I've had no issues with it peeling or scratching and don't use a case.
Regarding the battery I do charge the phone every night but that seems pretty standard with smart phones. Also I've noticed someone at my work who has a HTC M8 and she is charging hers at least once every day, I never need to do this.
Plus also you can get a turbo charger for the moto x which charges the phone ridiculously fast, so its win, win.

i understand the fear of peeling, but i don't know why wood gets such a bad wrap. if plastic was so tough we'd make houses out of it, but we use wood for a good reason, from the framing to the floor. i make signs for a living. same thing. people come in here not wanting wood because they think it won't last. Outdoors, the MDO plywood signs i make last about 15 years before they even start to show their age. Outdoor plastic signs i make get brittle, crack, warp, and discolor after about two. What i'm saying seems consistent with this picture of two 5 month old phones

That comparison doesn't really work. The wood on the x is veneer, and it's the adhesive that's failing. If it was a thick piece of wood, I wouldn't question its durability, but it is super thin, probably around .5mm. No house is built from wood that thin.

What does that have to do with the adhesive failing?
