Copy the mp3 to the media/audio/notifications folder. Just beware if it's a long song it will play forever unless you manually shorten it. Try using Ringdroid or Tape Machine for that.
Ok thanks and cheers!
Get Ringdroid from the market. You transfer songs to your phone, open up Ringdroid, select the song you want and you can trim out the section of the song you want to use, therefore it doesn't play the entire song. And when you are finished, it asks you if you want it to be saved as a ringtone, notification, or an alarm and it will save it to the proper directory.

I figured out how to do custom ringtones but not how to set custom alarms.
How do I put an mp3 file I have to be an alarm? (all the alarms that come on the phone suck and def do not wake me up in the morning).
You need 3rd party software to use MP3s as ringtones.
Im not trying to do ringtones and I already am using mp3s as ringtones without a 3rd party app. Just put the song in the windows/ring/ folder.
Im trying to set a custom alarm.
Try Chronos, PocketAlarm or alarmToday.
All of these allow you to use an MP3 for an alarm, in addition to a variety of other advanced features.

Anything that doesnt cost money?
My bad, I meant alarms like your post wanted. As for cost, I haven't found anything free myself.
Mort Player
You can use Mort Player as Alarm Tool.
I use it too. You can use Mort Player with mp3 and the best function is,
that mort Player can chance the System Loudness to any Volume that you want.
So you can turn Loudness off when you sleep and MortPlayer will turn it on to wake you up in the morning.
And MortPlayer ist free

anyone else on an alarm program I can use that will allow me to play my own tunes. Or at least a way to put my mp3 file in a specific file so that it will show up on the scroll down list.
Make it a WAV file and put it into your /Windows/ dir.
Then go to your alarm app and click the "bell" and you should see your file.
converted it to a wav file. Came out being huge for one song though(32mb). It came up on the list but every time I clicked on it, it went to default. Whats going on.
I suggest you look a bit around in this thread, you'll find a few free ones in here too
Alarm applications
is it possible to do so? since i have tried to put my own mp3 into the windows/rings file, but i can found them when i choose the type of ringtone in the setting manual, can anyone help? much thanks!
Yes all you have to do is place the Song that you want in the Windows folder..then youll go to "sounds and Notifications"..then Notifications Tab...Change the Event..to "new Text message"..then youll Find the Song on the list..And DONE>!...make sure you dont put the whole song...then youll have to listen to the whole song everytime someone texts you...so use the mp3 trimmer to make it shorter..and BINGO>!

No need to put it in /Windows/ folder... I put the mp3 files in /Storage Card/ folder and the device still able to detect them.
Sorry if this issue has been posted before ... my search didn't find it ...
My Xperia X1a has quit playing my MP3 ringtones, and instead seems to only play WMA. If I try to designate a MP3 as a ringtone, and sample it, no sound happens. If I browse to the MP3 file and try to open it, a message appears that states no application is associated with MP3. But Media Player still plays MP3s ok(??)
Please advise ...
TIA, and cheerios from the Avalon Peninsula

Thanx for your reply. I would describe it as a "generic" icon, white with the "Windows" flag.
No problemo. Check this out:

Is there a way to set a MP3 as our voicemail notification sound?
Yes, you can have an mp3 as your notification sound
Find the mp3 you wnt and browse to your SD card. There should be a media folder there. Open the MEdia folder, then Audio, then Notifications
Drop the mp3 there
Unmount the Sd card then check your notifications. You should have that mp3 in there. Select it and yer good to go
You may want to shrink that mp3 into just a snippit of the whole song though. Getting a text message and having a song play would start to piss me off pretty fast since i get a lot of texts.
I've got my AHD bluetoothing it to my Subaru Impreza's stereo, which has a small LCD panel to display stuff like Title, Song, Artist, etc. Well, for a while now when I have the stereo on Bluetooth Audio mode, all I get from the phone is "Facebook / Facebook Notifications / Facebook pop", unless I'm using the Google Play app, which I rarely do. It's really annoying, I'm sick of seeing that! I don't even use frickin' Facebook that much, maybe once a week. I guess I could uninstall the app, but using the web mobile site sucks.
I do use Bluetooth Audio for my podcast player and audiobook player.
How do I get that message to go away?
HELP?
facebook pop is the name of the notification sound of the facebook app.
you can find it in some trivial place like sdcard/notifications.
if you dont want android to see it, you can create a blank file named .nomedia it will flag the folder as hidden for any media players.
