Renaming B&N books? - Nook Color General

Anyone tried renaming the B&N dnloaded books & see how the stock reader reacts? I would like to rename the file with a proper title instead of the ISBN #.
Thanks,
kev
OK I renamed an ISBN titled book & since it was in my B&N library, it showed on the Nook, but needed to be downloaded, so apparently it won't work. Next I will try putting a renamed B&N book in the folder that Calibre sideloads them to.
Cheers,

Way to get sideloaded books on homescreen with no root

Ok, I found a somewhat passable way to get a sideloaded book on the homescreen without root.
If you plug in the NC and go to *:\B&N Downloads\Books you should see if you've downloaded samples or free books (Or I guess actual books for that matter) some files with seemingly random numbers. If you copy over the sideloaded book into this folder, rename it whatever the downloaded sample of that same book is, and delete the downloaded sample what you'll get is the sample still in your library but it actually opens up to whatever is named that random number string!
The first time you open it it might have a new ribbon on it and say fail to open book or something like that but after you close out the error it work just fine. There's two problems, it's going to have the sample ribbon on it and when you open it it'll have the buy now button at the top but that's better than nothing right?
I haven't tried too much to change what the cover is. When I open it up in Calibre it shows what I set the cover as so the NC is not getting that data from the file. If you change the number of the file (Some have v.1, v.2, etc. after the numbers) and try to open the book it'll actually redownload the sample. I'm thinking even if you knew what the actual books file name was it wouldn't work to get the correct cover because instead of updating the cover it's just going to redownload the sample.
If you did this with a free nook book then I don't believe it'll have the buy now button but of course it'll have whatever the free books cover is.
If anyone knows how to get that sample ribbon or the buy now button off it'd be great but if not I think this is a decent way to get sideloaded books on the homescreen (On unrooted NCs of course)
Also, if I explained this poorly just let me know and I'll try to be clearer.
It's not a random number string, it's the book's ISBN.
Have you tried naming the sideloaded books its ISBN number and putting it in the folder with the homescreen ones?

That's an interesting idea. I have a couple epubs that should be identical to the BN edition but DRM-free. Wonder if this will do the trick. I'll give it a try and report back
UPDATE: I tried to do use the ISBN to name the file in the B&N Downloads folder, but they're followed by a -ePub.v*.epub, where * seems to be some number between 1 and 4. And I wasn't quite sure how to go about picking the number. I figured that trying all 1-4 for each book would be a little silly, so I went with the sample thing.
The sample has a numerical string that starts with 294 or 298 instead of 978, and for the two books I tried, the last digit was 1 number bigger than the ISBN. Hope that helps.
Also, do note that if you open it from the sample link, there's gong to be a "Buy Now" link at the top of every page while you're reading, and a "Sample" flag across the front of the book.

[Q] Noob: Moving personal ePub files to NC Froyo on SD Card

I am running the customized Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 on a SD Card and have the Nook eReader installed. I am not sure how I move my personal ePub files - free books downloaded, no DRM - to be read on the Nook eReader. I tried to connect to my PC with a USB cable, then enabled USB on the NC. Then in Windows Explorer I tried moving the files to various directories like Nook, Nook/My Documents, My Files etc., but no matter where I put the files when I go into the Nook eReader it does not see the files (I am looking in My Files section). I even tried using Aldiko - that did not work either. Calibre says the files are transferred to the SD Card.
Any ideas? Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
Never mind I found the answer here. Interesting that you have to use ADB to push ePub files and you cannot transfer them using Calibre or Windows Explorer. I thought ADB was for programs only.
Thanks to all you guys for the fantastic job in making the NC a working Android tablet.
I use dropbox for this as well. GIven that I had updated 4 or 5 different builds and ran on SD card for each of them, it was handy to just download the dropbox.apk and have all of my personal epubs available each time.
Thats a great solution! Can you tell me where I can get more information on how to use Dropbox? I see I already have the app.

+1 for this. Running the same config and haven't messed around with adb at all.
Disclaimer : I don't use the nook app; I use fbreader, so ymmv with this.
Anyways, the way I get epubs out of Calibre onto the nook is via the Calibre webserver. Turn it on on your pc (In Calibre, Preferences->Sharing->Sharing over the net, set up what you need, then hit the Start Server button), then access it via your nook color's web browser (make sure you use the port you set up in the url, that that port isn't blocked by a firewall, etc).
From there, you can just click to download the epubs. On mine (nookie froyo), it asks whether I want to complete the action with the browser or with fbreader. I choose fbreader and it will download it and add it to its library (if you're curious where the files get dropped, on mine it's /mnt/sdcard/Books/<ip address of my desktop>/get/EPUB).
FBReader can also talk to OPDS servers for network libraries, which the calibre web server also talks (it's just a specifically formatted) xml feed). Go into Network Library, then click the Add Catalog link. The OPDS url to use:
http colon slash slash <your server ip>:<port you setup>/opds/
(gotta love new user link protection)
The resaon I go through the nook browser instead of the network library is because the calibre web server allows actual searching. The OPDS feed doesn't allow searching (though it does allow you to get at your library through a number of different categorizations, which might be sufficient for you). Fair warning, too, that since I haven't used OPDS much, there may be something I'm missing about it.
Thanks very much for the detailed response. Just got back in town - will try it this weekend.

Sync Nook books with Android

I have a few epub books I side-loaded onto my NC but they are not showing up on the B&N "My Nook Library," section of my online account management which means they are also unavailable on my android phone. Is there a way (a specific location to move them to on the Nook) to get them to sync? I don;t do a lot of reading from my phone, but it'd be nice to pick up where I left off for a few minutes when i have time.
Anybody?
.
AFAIK, side loaded books do not sync.

You could sync the Files with Dropbox... but you wont be able to sync your place in the books if that is what you are looking for.

...with some creativity it might be possibe to use Dropbox and a few symlinks in the appropriate data folders to sync places (..assuming android supports symlinks like other linux/unix os's... )
Side loaded books won't sync with the Nook. They will sync with the Kindle app if you're willing to do some hacking.
Get aldiko in the market. It reads epub and pdf protected books. I normally have to open the file in astro or similar for aldiko to see.
If possible just download to ur nc and skip the sideloading.
What do you mean by sync? Are you expecting sideloaded books to get pushed up to B&N and pulled down to other nook readers?
If you can't see your sideloaded books in Nook-Android on HC, go here:

Yes, actually. But I can see why B&N doesn't allow it.

I also use Aldiko in the Rooted NC to read epub books. FBReader is also a good alternative.

Nook android app and sideloaded epub

Anyone know how to get the nook android app to show the covers for epubs? Only downside of going cm7 vs stock eclair.
I just found a way
You need the book ID that the Nook app uses to identify each book.
This can be found inside the nook.db SQLite database used by the Nook app, look at the "ean" field inside "products" table. The easiest way to find it is by using the SQLite editor app from the Market.
Each ean should be a string of 64 chars, like this:
686B5DF3A725532E508C8A4741166F748F7419C0801FC0B638B6F5C246244AD3
Now you just have to put the cover and its thumbnail inside /sdcard/Nook/Images, in PNG format and using names like:
686B5DF3A725532E508C8A4741166F748F7419C0801FC0B638B6F5C246244AD3_thumb.png
and
686B5DF3A725532E508C8A4741166F748F7419C0801FC0B638B6F5C246244AD3_cover.png
Hope this helps.
I created an app and placed it in the market call "Nook Book Cover Helper", which pulls the title and ean numbers from the database and displays them or allows you to export them to a text file. It's a little simpler then searching with sqlite.
I get library sync errors whenever I do this mod. The covers show up OK, but whenever I go in or out of the application, I eventually start getting the errors.
I tried with both _thumb and _cover pngs and with just _cover or just _thumb files. It seems that either way works. I eventually wind up clearing data (which changes all the EAN #s and messes up the covers again).
I tried just doing one cover and about a dozen (out of about 18 sideloaded books). They are all EPUB books. I did notice that the EAN #s are longer for sideloaded books than for books purchased from B&N.
Anybody else seeing this issue?

keyodi, thanks so much for releasing this. Finally I'm able to see images in the library! The process is still cumbersome, for which I blame BN. I copied each EAN code compiled by the apk, pasted the data as the new name for the cover image in each folder created by Calibre, copied all image files, and pasted them into the image directory. After futzing around for a while, everything synced up just great. I noticed that when I had to make some minor modifications to some of the epub files (for example, changing some metadata), I had to create the image files all over again. I'm very grateful to keyodi for creating the Nook Book Cover Helper, but completely annoyed with BN for making the process that difficult. Let's hope the Nook app will get updated someday.
Unfortunately, the ean numbers will get recreated if the epub is modified in any way or if you clear the data. I guess it's just another way for BN to force you to buy books from them
DiDGR8, what errors do you get? Force closes on the Nook app? Do you have latest Nook app installed?

The app is up-to-date and does not force close. I get a error dialog stating that an error has occurred while synchronizing library contents. The dialog is occasionally continuous until I close the app. I didn't do problem isolation on the wifi (it may or may not occur with wifi off). When the error is not continuous, the book listing resets to a new order (books sort around in a different order and my most recently read book is no longer the first one listed).
It's annoying but not serious, but I don't value the book covers enough to put up with the hassle of figuring out the new EANs or putting up with the errors so I go back to "generic" covers. No biggie.

Wow, that's nice.
If you feel like doing some more programming, you could try to automatically extract the cover from the epub files and adding it to the library.
You could search epubs (which are just zip archives) for a file called cover.*, convert it to PNG if needed and put it in Nook library with the right name. This should work with a lot of epubs (e.g. those converted with Calibre).
I know it involves much more work than just extracting the names but...

I was able to extract the cover images from the epub, so I may publish the updated app today or tomorrow.
Edit: Updated app on market
Keyodi, thank you for the updated app. For some reason, I get a "no database found" message when I try to scan my nook folder. It was working fine before but now I can't get it to work. I tried rebooting but that didn't help. The books still show up in the Nook app, though. Any ideas?
If you receive the "No database found" message, then the app was unable to connect to the db. Can you verify that the locker.db exists under /data/data/bn.ereader/databases/?
You can also try clearing data on the nook app (Application Setting/Manage settings), but it will require you to log in again and re-download your books and cover images.
I also updated the app to 1.5.1, which fixed a couple of bugs, so maybe this version will fix your issues.

I get a blank screen; after the intro page, the header and status bar are there, and menu pops up an "Export" button, and back works, but no books are listed; there should be dozens.
I have some leftover epubs in my /emmc from before I installed CM7; would that confuse things?
Are your books showing up under my files? The blank page just means no epubs were found in the db. I probably should display that message instead of a blank page.
You can try a couple of things:
-Press refresh in the NOOK app
-upload the locker.db, so I can take a look at it
-Rename the locker.db to lockerbk.db under /data/data/bn.ereader/databases/ and launch the nook app

After much screwing around, I find that /sdcard/Nook/Content appears to contain my B&N-bought .epubs, with names like "12345678901234567890_Title.epub". Damn, that makes them hard to browse. I won't attempt to correlate the numbers with some field in a database. There are also InfoJson_12345... files as well; these appear to be tables of contents. /sdcard/Nook/Images appears to contain covers and thumbnails (named 1234_thumb.png or 1234_cover.png) for books both downloaded and viewed on the "Shop" page. Lots more thumbnails than covers, but covers are for both downloaded and inspected (I looked at the details) books.

Damn. Let me try again.
I do have another question, though: my numbers look to be in a different format than those discussed earlier in this thread, and 1234_cover.png files that do exist are not displayed by the Nook app. This seems like a bad thing...
The db doesn't list any side-loaded epubs. Are all your epubs located in /Nook/MyDocuments folder on the sd card?

My B&N-bought stuff is all in /sdcard/Nook/Content; I've been using eReader and aldiko for side-loaded content. Aldiko appears to import into /sdcard/eBooks.
I haven't tried to use the Nook app to read sideloaded books, I was under the impression that it didn't work. Can you point me to a clue? Do you just drop the .epubs in /sdcard/Nook/Content?
sigh
Thanks!
The nook app can read sided-load epubs, but you have to place them in sdcard/Nook/MyDocuments. Try copying one or two epubs from the /sdcard/eBooks folder into sdcard/Nook/MyDocuments.

[Q] Library is now empty

Hey guys,
Did a search and found people with a similar issue but no solution. I bricked my NC last Friday trying to install a kernel. I got it back with recovery but now my Nook library is empty. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Nook app multiple times but no dice. When I look at my account from my computer, everything is still there.
Anyone know what might have happened?
66 Views and nobody has an answer???
Come on guys, somebody has to know something. It sucks because I can't read the book in any other reader because of DRM or some bull**** like that. When I try to open the epub file in any other reader I just get symbols.
Help!!!1
This is totally just a guess, but you may want to try going to settings/applications/manage applications/ view all and find nook then clear data, clear cache. I read somewhere that this sometimes helps with apps that are acting up. I hope this helps. good luck.

Thanks dude. I have since given up. I started using the Kindle app and that's working for me so far.
Luckily I can finish reading the book I was in the middle of because I have a Pandigital Novel at home.
I basically had the same issue, but it started a little different.
My library showed all of my books, but when I clicked to download them, it said something about could not download, call 1-800-the-book. Obviously I wasn't about to do that.
I searched around quite a bit and never found an answer that worked. I uninstalled Nook app, re-installed, and updated. That made it worse. Now I don't see any books in my library. I signed out, signed in, refreshed, etc. No luck. I moved the app to sd card, that didn't help.
I never did find an answer, so I just switched everything over to Aldiko. They even have steps on how to import books you bought from B&N.
Interestingly, I have the Nook android app installed on my Evo. Both my Nook and my Evo are on CM7. I have no problems at all with seeing my library or downloading books on my Evo.

Here are the steps I followed to get B&N content on Aldiko. Found it on Aldiko help page.
I was able to use the SD Card feature in Aldiko to import DRM'd Nook books on my Android Device.
At the Home screen in Aldiko, tap SD Card.
Navigate to the Nook folder on your device
Navigate to the Content folder within the Nook folder
Tap on the book you want to import (not on the check box, just tap the title)
You will be prompted to open or import, tap "open"
you will then be prompted for a username and password. The user name is the name on the credit card associated with your Nook purchase. The password is the credit card number itself, no spaces.
Once you have been able to open the book, go back to the home page and follow steps 1 through 4.
This time, when you are prompted to open or import, choose "import". The book will be imported to your Aldiko Library.
The reason I open before importing is that there is no password prompt when importing. I did find that once I had entered my credit card info for one book, I was able to import all of the rest of my Nook purchases without opening first, the app seemed to just need this information once.
Enjoy!
Im having the same problem. I completely erased and rebuilt my whole nook - most recent CM7, and the most recent nook app, and still no librar. Tried Aldico and it does not work as there is no content on my card. I downloaded off my pc to the card and it would not read it.
This has happened to me before, I posted in the B&N forums how to fix it.
What worked for me after (a lot of headache) is simply this: on your online B&N account on the PC, move every single book to Archive, then move them back to the library. They should then show up in your NC.
It seems to be a server refresh type of issue.

B&N support had me try moving one book to archive and back and it didn't show up. I guess I can see if moving them all makes a difference.
EDIT: Nope didn't work
UPDATE:
With the Nook app update on the on the market this morning, suddenly my library is back! Not sure what they updated but it seems to have solved my issue, for now.
I'm having this same issue. Nook app one my rooted NC was working fun until one day, poof, library is empty.
I've tried uninstalling, rebooting, re-installing, signing out, moving the app to SD card, etc etc. App is version 2.6.2. Anyone else experiencing this? I tried to engage B&N support but it's pointless.
