Phoenix 3.5 help - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've installed Phoenix 3.5 and love it. I need help moding a few items though.
1) The keyboard. I have large hands and the small keyboard is a killer. Can I install stock android/samsung keyboard?
2) I would like to install a different dialer. I have downloaded one but don't completely understand the install steps.
3) Is there a better battery indicator for the top bar, that works w/ 3.5? I am a fan of the batt indicator that is a circle w/ the battery percentage in the center.
4) HERE's A BIG ONE........... Can I get Kies to work w/ this? I am using a Captivate i897 but I'm guessing the phone doesn't see it as that anymore. After all the boot screen shows i9000. What are the steps I need to use to get in here?
Thanks, Tomween1

The keyboard you can fix by goibg to settings, and then locale and text, then selecting samsung key pad. I think you should give swype a try. I hated it at first and then got used to it and realized its alot faster.

Yes you can install samsung keypad but you need to find the apk
Dialer needs to be posted over old one. Do you have root explorer?
I believe your base is jpy. Any theme that is for jpy should work. Find one with circle bat that you like
Check your product code using sgs tools, under secret codes. If it does not end in kaat that is your problem. It can be fixed but it is a hastle. Why do you want to use kies?

Have you tried the latinime.apk posted on the op for phoenix? As a keypad solution

a circle batt, that is jpy? Then can this be installed as an app or does it need to be rooted?

Guess I stay away, I was curious if the new firmware fixed the link problem. No need for it, just looking for a iTunes-like app.
Thanks, Tomween1

Root explorer is an app. It cost like $4. It gives you access to files standard file programs can't view, like were tire dialer is stored. There are free alternatives like android mate
Themes are installed through clockwork recovery but I think you may want to read up a bit
Try double twist as an I tunes replacement for music. Download to pc, its free

[Q] Android Keyboard from 2.1 -> 2.2

I don't know about you guys, but I've never been a fan of Swype or Samsung's keyboard, but I loved the Android Keyboard. Does anyone know if it works or have the apk for it? I wanna try and put it back on my 2.2 install and test it out.
I just found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744373
Looks kinda like what I was looking for, but without the little part that slides upwards for the numbers.
This is what you're looking for.
LatinIME.apk
1. Put it on your SD card
2. Install via whatever you like to use.
or use the ADB to install it.
Thank you. That was just what I looking for. Only thing is, even when I enable the vibrate on keypress, it's not giving me any haptic feedback.
I'm using the keyboard here, listed under FroYo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740301
Just install it as a regular app.
And do you get haptic feedback on the Android kb?
Edit: Yepp, the one from the AOSP thread actually has working feedback. Thank you MikeyMike.
Edit2: I lied. It doesn't. Lol
I've been using AnySoftKeyboard from the market.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Guys... You can enable it in the input options...
Settings > Locale and Text > Android Keyboard.
I know that. In 2.2 there is no android keyboard, they got rid of it. I want it back because I find it superior. However none of the ones I've installed have haptic feedback like they did on 2.1 and that's what I want. And yes I know that you have to enable it in the settings.

Thank you man, you're a lifesaver

I don't know if I hate haptic feedback or the samsung keyboard more. The Android keyboard is the best one out there (IMHO)
My whole point in creating this thread was to get the Android Keyboard back on 2.2 and have it fully functioning. Meaning I wanted the haptic feedback on it to work and it doesn't. Was there another file or something that went with the LatinIME.apk on 2.1 that I don't know about or couldn't find? Can anybody shed some light on this situation? I desperately hate the Swype and Samsung Keyboards.
No luck with this? I would like to have the Android 2.1 keyboard back as well. (with the hepatic response)
No luck. But I think I may know what the problem is.
On a few of the android keyboards I've seen around the forums, some of them had a corresponding .so file. I don't really know what that is, but I'll go do some research, rummage through my JF6 dump, and post my results here.
Edit1: Ok, so here is what I found. A .so file is a shared object file. Not quite sure what it actually does still, but the Android Keyboard (AOSP) has a .so file that goes with it. I'm guessing that this file is what allows the keyboard to have haptic feedback. I'm going to take the one from my JF6 dump and push it to JI6 and see what happens after a reboot.

can't use both of them at the same time as they both use the same file names.
EDIT: they do have option for vibrate on key press (haptic) though doesnt work.
Neither of them have haptic feedback on 2.2. I just tried both. And yes I did enable it in the keyboard settings. This is really frustrating. Why the heck did they remove this keyboard??

just realized it doesnt work though it is an option. my fault!
i never liked it anyways so im not missing anything
I'm experiencing the same thing, default froyo keyboard on a captivate with froyo, no haptic feedback.
So far I've tried:
- a bunch of different google searches for the same issue
- finding the apk in /system/app and giving it full permissions + reboot + uncheck and recheck the haptic feedback setting
- poking around the file system to see if I can find any settings to mess with
I understand froyo for the captivate is pretty new, but I'm surprised more people aren't asking about the best keyboard (IMO) missing a significant feature.
I agree. This is a superb keyboard and should not have been taken out
Sent from my Captivate
Yes I agree that the Android keyboard is awesome! Actually it was one of the reasons I liked my switch from iPhone. It's so easy to type with unlike most touch keyboards. Why in the world would Samsung get rid of it? Talk about a step backwards. I hesitate to update my phone now. I hope someone can come up with the perfect fix....
*typed on my android keyboard*
I just wish I could figure out a way to hack it back onto 2.2 in 100% working order. Everything works except for the haptic feedback and I cannot figure out why.

[Q] Personal Theme Pack - REWARD AVAILABLE!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Okay so I've made a custom theme pack for myself, now I just need to know if there's a program out there, for un-rooted users, that will allow me to manually change each existing icon myself? If anyone knows of such a program please reply with it, including some information on where I could find the program.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help out, there's a couple quid in it for the 1st successfull program/method that works exactly how I want it to.
Please note, I don't particularly want to edit each file .apk manually to change its icon =D
How many views and no one wants to make any money?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
It is not possible to change something like the icons without root as it would need access to modify the apk files
Okay so given that I'm looking for a nice simple 1 click root, once found what would be the cards in the deck then?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
You could change the shortcut icon on the homescreen for example with a program called anycut, or the paid one called bettercut
Otherwise you will need root acses
Edit: Or (Don't know if this works someone might need to correct me ) if you get each apk of the app you want to change the icon on, just open the apk and replace the icon
EDIT2: Nvrmnd read the first post slowly
I've already sussed out the homescreen icons and yeah it makes a massive difference to me, but idealy I want every icon changing to the way I want it, is there a 1clickroot method for Hero?

Hmm... Umm... I got two methods that im not sure if they'll work, first search the market for androot (i think) and try root it that way, second download ROM Manager from the market and install the clockwork mod recovery, there the closest ways to 1 click i think

First thing, could you go into (on your phone) Settings, ABout phone, Software infromation and then write what it says under Firmware version
Hey I've got to go for a bit now
I reccomend looking here seems simple
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/
And that should work
Now we're down to business! 2.1-update1, I done that myself =D lol then I updated something else to 3.35.61.2 if this is to any use =S
Hehe I can't keep up anymore. It's such a long time since I rooted my phone I have no idea what I did Anyways the trick is to let out what you don't need. Software number etc. often doesn't matter. It's pretty easy actually. When you get root you can very easily install a recovery. Basically you just download Amon_RA from the dev section and type in some basic commands in a terminal emulator on your phone AFAIK (that is when you have gained root which you hopefully can with a one-click method) and then you can start modding flashing etc.
ADB is really easy to set up. You download the zip file from here, extract it and (I recommend) put the extracted folder on your system drive. Now you can rename it to something easy like "adb" or "Android". If you open your command prompt by typing in "cmd" in the search bar in start (if you're using Windows Vista or 7) or opening "run" and then typing in "cmd". You can now type in "cd yoursystemdrive:\thenameofthefolder\tools" and start using ADB commands. Like adb ls -1 system/app (this will list all your system apps. You can replace "system" with "data". Thos will list all your installed apps) or adb pull nameoftheapkyouwanttoedit.apk \adirectoryyouwanttocopyitto (this will copy an app you want to modify. To modify it you can extract with WinRAR or 7zip etc. and edit the images (except the ones that ends with ".9.png")) and at last adb push \thedirectorythemodifiedapkisin systemordata/app (this will put the modified apk on your phone).
Hope this helps a little

Tweaks for Master's Axura Rom

Just wondering what you guys have tweaked on Master's rom (the one I currently love using) to make it run the way you like it.
I have:
1. Reverted the dialer to the stock by copying the dialertabactivity to /system/app using root explorer
2. Found and installed a working Wifi calling apk (the first 2 I tried had various problems no incoming voice etc.)
3. Changed the system font to something a little more standard looking.
4. Changed the browser setting to Autofit Pages, so that when you double tap or turn the phone to landscape/portrait the words reorder and are easily readable. Changed the text size in Email app to small so it doesn't look huge (default is medium)
Oh and if you use his rom and enjoy it as much as I do, donate to master. His work has been beyond awesome so far.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748916 (where I got the font from, many others to choose from)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807116 (where I got the wifi calling from, using the one for htcvision)
I added the Black theme located (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845530)
And a black Multi touch keyboard ( some where in the themes section )
Guess I'm kind of not using Axura lol.
I love the Aura for battery life & speed, but the default theme is fugly.
Anyone has a way to change the notification bar to more stockish?
Thank you and god for getting rid of that crappy dialer and the font..
worst thing that master did..
thank you so much
I very much dislike the dialer too, I like the stock original dialer. Going to try and install that. Also don't like the font.
One last thing, I very much like the android keyboard, where can I get the apk for it? I'm using the htc keyboard right now, but for the life of me I can't turn of haptic feedback, even though vibration and haptic is turned off everywhere.

Luck is not on my side today. Tried replacing the dial apk with the one you provided, and it says I don't have enough space. I even deleted the one master provided, then went and tried to place the one you provided into system/app still says i don't have enough space. Huh?
One other thing, I don't like how the pull down notification bar is transparent, makes reading notifications in the pull down annoying when you see other stuff below it, will changing the theme change this to a non-transparent pull down?
Brand new axura user.
Wow, that dailer is indeed ugly.
Thanks for the stock version
You can also adb push the Dialer
One of the primary reasons I stuck with Axura over Macnut or Obsidian was the beautiful theme Master has put over it.
Why would you guys use Axura and then reskin it?
ya, i just went ahead installed the Font and selected it in the settings. Much better.
I also went ahead copied the provided Dialer app and put it in System/App - again much better.
Keep coming with your tweaks bud.
We like the animation however the font is not compatible to vietnamese and the dial is not looking good. Just my though

I like Masters roms the best. The affects are great, very smooth and very fast. I like his themes as well. Not sure why people don't like the dialer its different but that is what makes it nice.

Are you using root explorer? If so you just have to unzip the file and drop the apk into the /system/app directory. Make sure you are in r/rw mode when you tryo to copy it or it will not let you make changes in the /system/app folder. After that just reboot the phone. You do not have to install it. Any apk in that folder wil automatically work upon reboot. It should show up as the "phone" icon in the all programs menu.
The font is terrible. It is cool for about 5 seconds and then it is just annoying and hard to read. Makes you wonder if things you can't see are as screwy as the things you can see.
Thanks for posting an alternative

do you mind posting the apk?
I believe you'll need root for it to work properly. Its a system .apk file which means it'll have to be in the system part of the phone. Especially if you pull it from a ROM like CM.
For those who may not know root gives you that access...Jamezelle will be releasing that tomorrow anyways. ...well today lol

You do not need root to use the gingerbread keyboard, just search 'gingerbread keyboard' in market theres a free and a paid version. Ive only tried the free one and it works great!
Go into the settings and check your settings for the Keyboard, this keyboard is much better than the stock one.
There were a couple of versions of the Gingerbread keyboard floating around. One of which had bugs. I'd greatly appreciate someone posting the .apk for the working one.
Just tried both renamed Gingerbread keyboard on my TB and got FCs. Bummertown!

In CM7 we can use this froyo app messaging?
The are a few issues with trying to use the Blur apps in non-blur roms. I used to like the Blur clock (for the dock) and tried to get it into CM7, but gave up instead and just used the default app.
For SMS, have a play with goSMS, its pretty similar to the blur one (they have a few skins which are similar, I changed my up and skinned it differently anyway)
I get a bit confused here. I just can't just instal Froyo messaging apk to have the ballon like visualisation? Just using specific apps?
Go message doesn't work to me, when message have 160+ characters when I send te people who receves get symbols like "! & %" and can't read.
