guys,
I'm a new comer here, having just flashed a few nand rom to my hd2, after having used WM for many years...
I quite like the idea of android, but there are 2 things that annoy me:
1. the sync to outlook for my contacts...
2. but most importanatly, the dialer. I'm used to typing the first letters of a contact, but here it seems i can only dial a number, otherwise i have to search manually for the contact... Is there an alternative dialer i can instal?
The dialler works the same way as on WinMo. For example if you're looking to call "Mike" just tap 6 then 4 then 5 then 3. The letters for Mike are on those keys. Get it?

That depends on the build. Stock Android ROMs don't have this.
There are, however, alternative diallers available in the market, so it's really not an issue. There's even one available on XDA that allows you to type names, as well as numbers....

I just went into the Android Apps & Games forum and searched for the word "dialer"

1. I use companion sync, it syncs to google -> to my phone
2. The only dialers that didn't work for me were the Nexus builds, all the ones based on the Desire ROM work like the old WM dialer

If those apps aren't turning up in your Market, install 'Market Enabler' and spoof your location to view and install apps.
If 'Market Enabler' doesn't show up... Google for the apk and side install it.
You wiull then be able to download 'any' app you like, regardless of whether you are meant to be able to download it or not.
Install "Dialer One" from the market.
There are heaps of dialers on the market. Being a long time Win user myself, i admit Phonex, Resco contact manager, etc were quite good as far as diallers go.
Im currently using aTakephone (market) which isnt bad, there is even Contapps which looks nice as Phonebook 2.0 which links to each contacts details like FB, history, SMS etc.
As for sync to outlook contacts, i use MyPhoneExplorer, syncs contacts, calendar and you can use it to SMS etc.
dialer one
totally agree about dialer, seems a great step backwards!
'Dialer one,' is the best!
search the market for it, then thank me
thanks guys.
I've dnld dialer one and it seems to be doing the job well

Just a couple of questions as i notice when i was using the MSN
1. Does you PDA slow down to a craw when you launch the Messenger & also while it's running in the background?
2. When setting up Messenger, do you merge Messenger contacts with outlook or not?
3. When you launch Messenger be it on 3G connection or WiFi, how long does it take before it loads your full list of contacts?
4. Is there a way to speed up the Messenger on the TyTN II?
5. What version of Windows Live are you using?
Mine.
1. I can barely use my PDA for anything while Messenger is running. It feels as if it has freeze most of the time
2. I merge my contacts with Outlook
3. It takes mine a good 7 - 10 minutes before it loads up my Messenger list which is only about 120 contacts
4. Would love some advice here
5. Version 10.6.0033.0600
Appreciate any advice as i use Messenger a lot. Thank you and Merry Christmas
I don't really now all that but for me I love windows live... I wish the GPS worked a little better though... So many times it cannot find a signal. In anyevent...
The real question is what do you all feel is better Google live or windows live?

people!! There are 2 very different Windows Live/Live Search apps. Can we please start getting this straight?
I know MS made some idiotic branding/naming decisions, but I feel like if you own WinMo phone you should have it figured out by now.
The questions refer to Windows Live, NOT Live Search.
1.) No. Messenger does not bring my phone to crawl, although I rarely stay connected long because Windows Live + Kaiser Connection Issues = major suck fest (just search my past post for more info)
2.) No I do not merge Outlook contacts. I keep Live for all personal contacts and Exchange server for business. Works out really great.
3.) To connect to Messenger and see buddy list (about 105 contacts) over 3G takes approximately 1 minute.
4.) Have you tried Kaiser Tweak app for changing File System and Glyph settings? These tend to improve overall device performance and work well for me.
5.) I have used them all and recently downgraded to 10.6.32.2100.
I have to admit I do not use the Messenger portion much. My main complaint has been not getting Push mail to work correctly. Had NO issues with WL on my Hermes. I submitted a report to MS and they are supposedly "working on it"
Well...if that is the case, my Messenger is confirm not working the way it's suppose to. I actually though it was normal cos i had the same problem on my Hermes.
Care to give me the settings in the KaiserTweak file system thing that u r using.
1 more question....can i just download & install a older or newer version & have the current version overwrite?
1. i cant tell its running - but my contacts list is quite small - see 2.
2. i initially merged but got peeved off as all my msn contacts got mixed up with my real life contacts which made finding phone number laborious - so i reset it all only to find that doing so wiped my messenger contact list - entirely - no more contacts - not even on my main pc! so now i dont merge.
3. cant say on these two, havent really ever connected via them - on gprs though it takes about 6 seconds ish - but again my contacts list is short.
4. probably not
5. Version 10.6.0033.0600
my pet peev is the windows live home screen plugin - its far too large

In Kaiser Tweak, under Cache. I am using all the (Advised) Settings. However I don't think that will help your problem much. Do a lot of your contacts have a custom display picture? When I contatced MS about my problem with emails they told me to change my display pic to a default as custom pics have been known to cause issues. If a lot of people on your buddy list have custom pics, that could be causing the delay.
Also, do not install WL over a previous version. First uninstall it from your device and soft reset. Then install the older version.
Let us know if you find something to fix the issue.

In case u hit problem number 2 again, u can actually log into MSN on your desktop, then click on Tools->Options->Privacy then click on View. From there, just right click on the names on the list and add to contacts

Thanx for the info. Sadly most of my contacts have their own custom pictures which might explain the slow loading of my MSN.
This still does not explain why when MSN is running, my TyTN II is crawling to the extend many time i just reset it and stop using the MSN
Well....guess now i have another problem....my MSN is in the ROM itself. I'm using Dutty's No.7B ROM. Any ideas?
Hi,I have 10.6.0031.2600 version and it doesn't work too.I send a mail to http://support.live.com and they answer me that i must verify proxy connections. So i don't know why because it worked before ...
Finally....when setting up MSN, do not "Store & Merge contacts with Outlook". This has made my MSN run like normal again. Now it's fast Thanks guys for the tips & advice. Problem solved.
Hi all
Im looking for an app that will complement the calendar by allowing to record voice notes instead of text input when the calendar is open on "day" view.
when you hold down a specific time on the calendar, the voice recorder is activated and the Voice Note automatically gets recorded on the calendar date and time you are holding down, and gets added to your reminders/appointments with default settings and no more questions.
It would be a lot better obviously if it was translated to text first, but not necessary.
I was able to find "voice cal", very old and uninstallable on wm6.1 with .cf.net 3.5
and also "speerio voice organizer"... looks like a memory hog and i read it doesn't work right. Its also crowded with a million different things that are not useful.
I just want a simple interface to be able to use with one or two clicks or buttons in order to set up a calendar event while im driving or on the phone etc....
thanks
bump!.................
Hi Spiro,
any luck on finding that app? Cos i've been looking for the same, tho i would prefer that when u push the "record" button, u get multiple choices regarding where to place the voice note, where "calendar" bein one of the first. Then u just had to place it into the day and time you would like it to be. Haven't found one yet, so i've started to write to different application developers suggesting such an app. I'm surprised that they haven't made one ages ago. In meantime, if you should come across one, pls let me know.
cheers
anyone???
Do I really have to take up programming and write my own app?
I was lookin around and saw this
handheld.softpedia.com/get/Business/Calendar/VoiceCalendars-52540.shtml
I think this is different than VoiceCal
The one I gave the link to, seems lke it could work. Only problem is that it doesnt use WM existing calendar.
I tried speerio voice reminder and it was horrible! I dont know what some people are thinking.
All I need is a simple plugin to show itself on the calendars context menu when I "long press" on dayview to say "new voice note" and when I click on it it should have a HUGE red record button and a stop button. When you hit the stop button the calendar would save that as an event with the default alarms on the date it was created
the only problem I see with that is that the heading of the event would not be very informative unless one typed the info, but im willing to live with that. Or maybe MSvoice command could help there with some text to speech engine!!! (im not holding my breath)
Im using an app called "thumpcal" right now but they dont have a "day view" and I have to set the time after I scedulle an event on a specific date, but its better than the built in calendar BECAUSE ITS SIMPLE!!!!!
I dont understand how am i supposed to use a program like "speerio" while im driving when it has 30 f...n buttons the size of a neutron on the screen in a grey on grey display?????????
Does anyone know what I have to learn in order to put a little program together to do what I want it to do?
PS I also found some other interesting programs like "freenotes" that I thought was a good idea but I would like to be able to initiate that from the "day view" on the calendar (right click on a time on the screen and have the choice of a voice note or a pen note) so that I dont have to key- in the time that I want the event to take place
ummmmmm.....the link that I posted does what you want.
1.Make folders by subject name
2.Click on a folder, it then brings up calendar
3.Click on a day of the month
4.There is a BIG RED RECORD BUTTON at bottom of screen
5.Record your note, it is then stored for that specific day
Is this not what you want? Granted it doesn't use your existing calendar but hey, something is better than nothing, right
VoiceCalendars
Update*
I was just lookin around and found this app. I think it might be right up your alley. Very simple/minimal interface. Allows you to record a voice message up to 2 minutes and then you can set a date and time for it to play aloud automatically.
Voice Reminder: Download Cab
Heres the website I found it at
I hope either of these programs can help. I know how frustrating it is not to be able to find that perfect app!

Hey asofiker
thanks for your reply
I have an HTC Kaiser phone
I tried both programs you suggested and had the same problems with both that other users seem to be experiencing
the "voice calendars" displays a "the control grid .....could not be created" error
and the other program from the XDA member gives me the "An error occoured on sub_app_start.
This device does not support display power on/off Continue?" error.
I appreciate your help and if I find anything that works in the future Ill be sure to post here
Thanks again!
Not exactly what you're looking for but an idea: Agenda Fusion with its Notes Organizer and Data Linking features. Also a good agenda with lots of views. http://www.developerone.com/agendafusion/index.htm
Pocket Informant 8 is the best Calendar and Contacts app available and I always install it to my wm devices. It has voice notes recording functionality and then some. Check it out. I have tried all the others at great expense (some provide trials) and this is by far the best one.
Regards,
MAC
I tried agenda fusion in the past and find that it falls in the same category as most of these organizer programs its simply overkill for a one handed hand held device with a 2 inch screen
Ill give pocket informant a try and post back
Thanks

Which version of PI are you using?
Mine is version 8 and it does exactly as you require! It saves a voice note under Storage Card/Voices when you select Notes View>Menu>Recording

[IDEA]A new contact app(2 preview screenshots)
Does anybody think the built-in contact app is not easy to use?
I'm working on a new contact app called aContact which provides a new UI to access to contact data and some more features.
So,anybody has any idea about this new app or found the disadvantages of the built-in contact app??
THANKS
I will post the scrrenshots after I finished the first version.
Thanks again for your advices!

nice idea even though i dont mind the g1's contact app i know it can be better.
some things i think you should add:
-ability to view contacts in groups or categories
- if possible assign ringtones to group
- have the number/letter show up when scrolling like the icontact for wm
- integrate it so that when someone send you a number you can long press and add number to you contact manager or you can make it retrieve contacts through google.
- have birthday

[REQ] Android App Ideas
hello android users,
I am a developer on the windows mobile side of things (see the M2DC thread for an example of my work) and I am thinking I might like to move over to developing for android.
I have a few problems, first, I don't have a device, this is not a huge deal at the moment because I can just use the SDK emulator for now, but I will be purchasing a device later on if I like developing for this platform. The second problem is that I need help with ideas for some simple apps... since I do not have a G1 to handle on a daily basis I don't really get the chance to feel things out and discover where an app might come in useful.
So my request is this. Does anyone have any ideas for "simple" android applications? Anything they wish the phone did better? Or a simple functionality that they wish the phone had? Reading through this forum it looks like there is a demand for OCR and possibly something to make applying new themes/skins easier? Or the TextTwist Game?
Of these 3 the game sounds the most interesting, the theme changer sounds good too because that is what my current development in windows mobile does, and the OCR is most likely out of my league at the moment.
I am open to any app ideas, I'm just looking for something to get me started and get me interested in the platform.
A few apps i would like to see as follows
1. A reboot option in shut down menu "if possible".
2. Digital Clock for homescreen
3. Screen Capture
4. Camera Zoom option
5. Checkers
Hope this helps a bit, good luck!
An application that kills tasks running in the background (although most folks say it's not possible right now), video recorder, night mode for camera, or Sirius/XM internet streamer similar to SiriusWM5 (I'm not sure that one is possible at the moment either...). Of course, you could create widgets (something more simple) but the source code won't be available to next year allegedly.
- Office suite (word and excel file editor)
- Youtube downloader from phone (like iphone mxtube)
- Super Mario Chronicles !!!!!
- FlightGear portable
- compiz fusion !! (not important but just tto test phone power to my friend that have an Iphone)
- More widget

You can view contacts in groups - Contacts - Menu - Display Group (created on GMAIL page).
Ringtones to groups would be nice, but for now you may just display a group and assign them all a ringtone
The long press to dial/save numbers in SMS has been addressed and should be in the final version of Android 1.0.
A birthday? Ehrmm.... Would personally prefer that to stay where it is (in my calendar).
I would like it to integrate the Dialer and searching for contacts, so i can just start typing a name or a number and it would show me the matching contacts. (I think SpellDial does this but is not very robust).
Thanks

If possible I will open source the beta version of my first program and post the beta packages here on xda for everyone to use without charge... I am still learning the whole process so we will see what happens in the end
Thank you for the suggestions, and I am still open to hearing more
I guess "simple" is also relative to your level of proficiency in Java and mobile development. As far as holes in the shipped operating system that could use fixing, there are many points to attack. Some could be done in the JVM, others would have to be done in native c. Examples include:
An office suite
Video recording
Touchscreen text input (API will expose this in 09Q1)
A simple but high-quality word or puzzle game would be great tho.
Edit: welcome aboard the Android side too ;-)

I agree with you 100%, the system stuff sounds good, but of the posted ideas and from what I have seen there is a small demand for "simple" games, and this is the direction I plan on going initially, games are fun to make and they should give me a decent overview of what is involved in throwing together an app.
As far as my java proficiency... I can definitely get by. I have a few websites that rely completely on the google web toolkit, and my bachelors degree was typical of an early 2008 CS curriculum, 2 years of java to learn what OO programming is, and then 2 years of C to learn about the fun stuff (pointers, threads, compilers, OS's, etc...). but like I said before I am just looking to make a traditional application, and I think that it is going to end up being a game of some sort,
I don't have a device yet, if I get one it would be pretty much a development only device, so I am trying to get my feet wet with an app or 2 before I decide to get one. I did manage to get a few minutes with a G1 today and I must say that the device feels so much better than my Titan, that capacitive touchscreen is awesome.
Once I get something going I will startup a new project on google code so I can take advantage of the free svn server and start posting my progress

Capacitive touch screens feel great and and quite responsive but they do have their caveats too. The main one is that accuracy of input is lower than with a stylus. You'll have to keep that in mind when you design the UI. You can scale the size of the emulator on screen to match an actual G1's physical screen size (emulated pixels might be mangled though).

I was curious if there was an alternative to the default text messaging software. The main reason I don't like it is that it is a little plain. So if you know of any it would be great if you could point me to it with a link or just give me a name. I have done some searching but could not find anything.
Thanks,
Bob Hoil
Hey, There is something that is similar, but a little bit nicer (has smileys, and stuff), but still a little plain looking. It's called Shogunmark? if i remember correctly :S
I really like Birdsoft's Extreme Text
This is not the actual company's website, it is down for some reason, but you can still download a trial from this site and even buy it from this site.
If you have pictures loaded for your contacts it shows them, and it also threads your sms and will even allow for hyperlinks to be clicked on. I only have WM6 and it works great for threading your conversations all without messing up your inbox or anything. All this program does is just reference your inbox and merely just groups your conversations by contact in nice looking app for you. You can install and uninstall without it messing up your messagin settings or losing any sms cuz its a stand alone program that just merely looks at your inbox and references it as I said before. Only downside is if someone sends a MMS, all you will see in the program is the message they sent with the pic/video. You woiuld then have to go into your actual message inbox to look at the pic/video.
try pocketcm
Extreme Text works well, looks good

I use Extreme Text also, and really like it. It looks nicer, and it types smoother - there is no lag in landscape mode from keypress to display, as there seems to be in the standard message app, in my experience. And it integrates fine with the standard message app - you can use them interchangeably.
Thanks for all of the posts and suggestions I will be sure to check them out. If anyone knows of anymore I can try out it would be great if you could post them.

Txt Msg software
You can also use iMov messenger....very convenient and simple
I like sms-Chat by Vito, But you have to have the most recent version, Version 1.10 has a bug and you can't see your text as you type in landscape... Version 1.15 should fix that bug..
I love my Kaiser, I will not trade it in for a Fuze. I am however set back with questions unanswered. I'll enlighten you.....
1) I have been using an app called "Where is My Phone". I love this app. There is a certain feature I am quite curious about that acts as a macro. When you SMS the phone with a certain command as the text, it triggers a macro to work. This is very interesting to me. I am aware that there is a program running in the background to check for such a text request, but my question is, are there other programs out there that will let you run your own macros on such a text requests???
2) I am also running the Inesoft program on my phone. I absolutely love the dialer, however, once the dialer has been used and a call is placed, the default dialer pops up... very sad since I havn't been able to find a dialer skin that I like. (yes, I have searched everywhere and found them all) Is there a way to set the inesoft dialer as the default dialer on my Kaiser? This would be very useful, because I cant just tap and hold the "1" button on my inesoft dialer to activate retrieving my phones voicemail messages.
This forum is my lifeline to the outside world when it comes to my Phone and i thank you all in advance.
uhm as for your first question, I'm not too sure if I can answer it. I do use an app called mobliza that runs in the background. it's basically like an away message program for SMS. it also has a feature that allows it to carry on a conversation with people who text you. go to tiltmobility.com to find the download.
as for your second question, I don't think there is any way to make it your default dialer unless it's cooked into a ROM.
actually, my first question looks confusing... what i want to do is get my phone to perform actions when i sms it. if you look at "where is my phone", its an app that sends you the gps coords, with a google maps hyperlink of your cell phones location when you send it a certain text.
As for part 2, I guess Ill just cross my fingers and hope someone cooks up a rom. thats the best dialer skin ive seen. finger friendly, big, plain, simple.....

I do not think xda allows roms with commercial software in the forums, as this would be considered warez, unless they just include the shareware version, which would be useless as it requires you to purchase after trial period. Maybe you can download a kitchen and integrate the software into your rom, shouldn't be that difficult.
You could provide the software to the chef of your favorite rom and ask him kindly to brew it in for you. As long as the software are fully available for download its no problem adding it to any rom. Reason why its not done are that people have to buy to fully take advantage of the software and no chef is going to force something like that on you. There has been payware on certain rom from some of the most known chef`s in here, but its very rare and if so its because the software been brand new or killing good.
The thought of brew this in case the device is stolen by someone are good. Cause if the thief are not an advance user chance of getting it back are good even after a hard reset
I used to use inesoft address book and if I can remember correctly, there is a setting where you can make the dialer and history the default.

This forum is my lifeline to the outside world when it comes to my Phone and i thank you all in advance.

yup, i think i came across that program, where you text your mobile with predefined commands and when your cell picks it up it runs the application or script. One thing i forgot the name, but i think its freeware, if my poor memory serves me right. Damn, anyway it stays on your homescreen, just a small icon on the lower part.
The developers also programmed the location based application launcher based on what cell radio tower you are on.
