Rooting does not allow non market apps, you need to enable sideloading. I think there is a program out there called one click decrippler that should do it. Look in the captivate development section for non market apps or sideloading
Woops, yes see post above

I am Newbie and I Just Rooted my phone.
So what can I do Know?
I did the Wi-Fi Tethering and Worked.
I downloaded Metamorph but didn’t found any Themes.
I want to delete Sprint Apps, and don't know how to...
Want to change the lock screen, but without changing the ROM...
Anybody could come with a List of what people can do, know that the phone is rooted.
BTW I am Running Sprint 2.1

Click on the link and download Fresh Kitchen.
You can create a nandroid, remove the bloatware, change the current lockscreen, create your own rom.

Welcome to the world of root!
While what Dave provided is in no way bad or wouldn't help you accomplish what you want, I suggest looking up adb commands.
Check out the main wiki thread in my sig. It will have a thread called "How to Remove Stock Apps, etc."
Once you have looked a little there, post back and let us know if you can't find some information, and we'll gladly help you out.
I've got to agree with Riggs, while Kitchens are nice for people who know what they're doing, I'm a firm beleiver that people just starting out should use ADB as much as possible.
Posted this in the Arai section since I know that AT&T removed the ability to install non market apps but Since I'm always in this section, I figured I'd put it up herel. It could be of use to some people here in the Magic section aswell.

Like the title says. Jerry Hildenbrand over at AC has made an open source program for windows which allows for the sideloading of apps.
Thought I'd inform the Aria users since AT&T removed this ability from the stock rom.
Incase anyone here hasn't rooted yet, Works with non roted devices aswell.

Hello, im little green about roms, and i have question..
yesterday i install on my dream CyanogenMod-6.1 and i love it,but there is no android market app?
why?
is there any chance to install it?
and why it isnt orginnally?
please help, cause i think it is important apps..
ps. i wrote here beacause i new and i cant write this post in topic about cyanogen
thanks for all answers!
A little while back Cyanogen had a scuff with Google and they said that they could not use Google Apps in their ROM. So in order to keep doing what they do, they make the ROM without the Google Apps. However, you need to download the Google Addon Pack (http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/124-google-addon-mdpi-tiny-20101020/). And you should be able to view the Cyanogen forums. I know if you download anything directly from them you need to be registered, but registration is free so you shouldn't have an issue.
Hi All,
I'm new to Android/Rooting. I used the SOC root method to root the phone, and now I have some questions I'm sure more knowledgeable folks can answer.
First and foremost, I know a recovery is in the works/testing phase and will soon allow alternate ROMS to be loaded. Until that time, I need to know what apps/processes I can safely remove from my phone without bricking it.
I know I can and have killed Bing and BingVoice. As well as stupid apps like Blockbuster, CityID etc....
What about things like VCast Apps? Verizon Media manager? Widgets?
There seems to be a lot of processes running in the background that I have no idea what they do.
I know each phone has different bloatware, is there a list for the Revolution?
Also what is the difference between uninstalling and freezing an App? Is there a free way to freeze an app?
Thanks for any advice
Yeah all the vzw apps can go
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA App
There is a thread about this already in the general section they have a list there
Sent from my Revolution

Thanks. I was unable to find such a thread before I posted here. Can you please point me to it?
Is it better to freeze an app or uninstall it? Are there free apps to freeze an app?

I had this problem with a replacement Captivate running 2.2. I called AT&T help line and asked them to push the update to my phone. Just ask them to push the "allow unknown sources" update. It took just a couple minutes and a reboot.
This is a question, not a general discussion. q&a stands for questions and answers, if you can't search for something that has been covered for over a year at least post in the right section...
