recently i tried to replace the kernel that came with a version of Phoenix with an updated kernel before flashing, but it did not work out. I simply extracted the original, replaced the zimage, and created a new zip file with the new kernel in the rom, using windows to package the zip. is this what i should do, or is it more complex than this? the flash failed.
Don't extract the rom zip. Use 7zip or similar and open archive, delete the zimage then drag the other kernel zimage in there. Or just flash the rom as is and then flash the kernel.

thanks! that makes sense. can i just do what you said using windows explorer?
7zip is free and handles many more file extension types.
Install it then right click on the file in windows explorer, select 7 zip, then open archive. This allows you to make changes without actually extracting the entire file.

yes i know, but when just dealing with a zip file, can i use windows explorer to delete contents inside the zip and replace them?

so when i double click on a zip file in windows explorer, and it opens it as if it were just another folder, can i not replace stuff directly in windows explorer where im at?
That extracts everything and you may have issues after zipping it back up

in windows explorer, you can right click and select extract files, but when you double click the zip it appears that it is allowing you to edit the contents without completely unzipping. am i wrong in thinking this?
Perhaps you can do it that way......i just always used 7zip. You will have to try it and see.

alright, thanks bud =D
I am using winzip. When I right click the zip file it gives me the option to "open" with winzip. When I do it shows me files like windows does. So my question is can I use winzip to replace the file and then close it?
winzip works as well

ok how do you put a app on ur phone when you download it from the web n u only get a zip file..thz
some of them either have the .apk extension changed to .zip, for those just change .zip to .apk
others are in the .zip file and have to be extracted.
the OP will usually say which of these have to be done. or you can just open the .zip file and look. if it has the .apk inside of the .zip file then extract.
if it has a bunch of folders then rename .zip to .apk

Do you sign it first? or rename and sign the apk?
Did the apk disappear? If not, right click it, navigate in the pop-up menu to 7zip->open, drag the stuff you edited into its appropriate spot, close the 7zip window, and you're done! I like to resign at this point, some people say that it is not necessary. For me, it is a simple right-click to do, so I just always do it. YMMV.
You dont need too. When you modify files in the .apk all you need to do is drag the /res folder to your working folder. When you're done, drag it back. Thats it.
So, is it only necessary to sign update.zips? What is the criteria for when something must be resigned?

All you have to do is unzip them, edit the files you want; in another window open the original apk file (one you extracted to work on) use 7zip - open archive, then drag the files you changed into the archive in the appropriate folders in the archive, close and you are done. I just push them back to the phone via adb, not sure if you would have to resign the zip, if you pulled the apk file out of a flashable zip file.

Unfortunately that didn't work.
Is file on your phone or computer? What zip program do you use on your computer?
File on computer....tried WinRAR and 7zip.
I know you can open it in winzip and then do a save as and save it as a zip file. Not sure that will help.
Did you use the convert feature in WinRAR?
Is the download corrupt?
I'll try Winzip now see what happens.
WinZip failed too...any help?
What exactly is failing?

Sounds like it's corrupt. Download again.

Cmon guys I seriously need help I can't use my phone!
Download playground and kernel and reflash.
I cannot flash the kernel...because I'm on S-OFF and I need to adb push the Wifi module driver...now to do that I need to change the name of the file in the zip. But I can't access the zip...
But isn't the Wifi module in the rom? If you are s-off, download the rom via computer, copy to sd card and flash. Do the same with the kernel. Unless I'm missing something.
The file isn't for unpacking as I remember you just need to edit the filename and remove the .7z extension and copy it over the current one.
It should only be S-ON users that had to do this as I remember too.

You can't just rename a 7zip file you need to extract and than re-compress the files into a zip file.

Just open up the .tar.a (Or whichever) with 7 zip
You can extract the files directly from that
Try it.

Thank you
I appreciate your help and patience
I've been looking through a couple of xda thread about it, found a few solutions. I managed to unpack from the .tar file, got the img.lz4 file and from that the .img and from .img to .img.ext4, but the .ext4 file is too small compared to the original .img file, so I guess the older SVAImgUnpack doesnt do the job correctly and can't open it with ext2explore. Is there any other software to use for this?
Nevermind, I've found a program for it.
