Maybe a dumb question, but I haven't seen a thread dedicated to this, but....
I'm tired of missing apps in the market. How do you side load apps? IS everyone using "Sideload Wonder Machine" from Android Central?
And where do you download the apk files from. Androidzoom only emails you a link to the Market which then can't find the app, SlideME has only half the market apps, same with Handango and Pocketgear. And Phandroid just simply sucks.
Do apps that require a GPS fix simply not install on our G Tabs? That would eliminate A LOT of freakin apps in one shot.
Can anyone offer a little help?
Specifically, I can't find Sunmoon, Living in the sun, Heavens Above, and Predisat. These are all sun and moon phase apps and a few satelite tracking apps. I know, silly and geeky, but I get a kick out of watching the International Space Station fly by at 2am.
Thanks, and thanks for not laughing too hard.

I have a Droid X phone and most apps show for me in the Market. I usually download them on my phone and then using Root Explorer I find the apk or zip file in the app/data folder and copy them over to my DropBox folder (all on the phone).
Then I use Dropbox on my gTab to save them to a directory on my gTab and simply install them that way.
You should really look into getting a DropBox account (free).
Here are the files you were looking for. I've attached them since they are FREE so I hopefully won't be violating any rules. If I am someone please let me know.
Oh my god you are the greatest, for explaining it, and for posting the links for me. Very cool of you.

Really cool to post them for him!
I thought it was a great question, one that I was wondering the answer to as well. If you don't own an Android phone (yet), then is there a quick tutorial on getting the files onto the gtab? Also, Is it legit to post apk files ready for download? I see it done quite often. If so I wouldn't mind seeing a dedicated thread for new apps people find with the file posted ready for download. The Notion Ink apk's were downloadable straight to the gtab which was great.

I think it depends on the apps. I believe if they are free versions then it is okay.

One way is go to USER CP (top bar on forum screen) and edit your signature to add devices or whatever else you want to say in the signature box. May be another way, not sure.

Now that we have the Android Market it seems to make it even harder for those who don't have an alternative android device to load apps as it states they are not for my device.
Anyone have the Super Bowl XLV app to sideload for the gtablet?

Once it's on your gTab you simply select it in any file explorer you're using and it will launch the installer and begin installation for you.

Today, while opening ASTRO, I got a message saying "This beta version will expire in 7 days" =/ Anyone else get this message?? I don't know what version I have (I think it may be 1.2) but I also don't remember it being a beta version either.... WTF....
Same here, got the "7 days remaining thing". Astro is good but im not going to pay for a file viewer, no way.
beat me to it. i got sidetracked at work and meant to post about this. guess paid version is coming.
when u first install astro it tells you that its only a beta
and that it will expire after like so many days
yea i just got the same message while deleting annoying thumbnails from the i09 app
I emailed the developer asking if it would be a paid app & how much but I haven't gotten a response yet. I'll post here if I get a response... If someone doesn't beat me to it
I already e-mailed the developer about this. I got this reply on March 3:
Sorry for the late response. Yes, we are working on more updates for ASTRO. There will be a new one out soon.

I see one of two solutions:
1) We wait for a paid version.
2) Does anyone have an old copy of Bender that didn't have an expiration date?

I am just gonna use discover- i love this app and will pay for it when google decide to let us aussies pay for stuff. Sure it doesn't do the autobackup of apps but thats what terminal and cp -r are for!! my apps are on sd anyway.
Yeah I accidentally deleted all files on my SD Card with Astro. So I switched to Linda File Manager. I like it better anyway

In australia, note the post. Australia doesn't have access to paid apps yet through the market.
New update in the market! Still FREE!!!
yes- i am in australia.. hehe....
anyway, i have been trying the linda file manager since i got the beta message- i think i may prefer that instead......
update looks ok. needs to add wifi like discover....
After searching for a Paid version of ASTRO, I came across a newer version "ASTRO File Manager" that doesn't expire until 5/15. This should hold me over until someone posts the original Bender .apk or we find a more suitable alternative. (Not crazy about Linda File Manager)
After wondering what would happen if I changed the date on my phone I discovered that the time remaining is related to your system date. I set the date after the expiration time and Astro still worked fine. Maybe this could be a possible work around for beta apps in the future?
Question about Astro File Manager!
I've been using Astro for the past 2 weeks I've had my G1 and its been a great file manager. However, for some reason I can't change the file names of any zip files in my sd card through it... like ok, i used to do this in order to change themes straight from my phone but now when i change the name, it says "file cannot be renamed" and it simply creates an empty zip file named after w.e it is i attempted to rename my initial file in the first place.
Any idea why this is happening now? I actually got an update this morning, and i thought the update would fix this issue but it hasn't.
there should be a repository of old .apk files so we can use the older apps when these developers decide to start charging for apps that were once free. the beauty of opensource software is eventually most paid apps will have some sort of free alternative as people keep developing for android. for example tetherWifi was free at first and then the developer started charging $8.95. i bought the app because i needed it but a couple weeks later Wifi Tether for Root users came out for free. So if they start charging for Astro after the beta period i'll just switch to a free alternative.
can someone help me. I've been looking forever for a way to download the screenshot app for t-mobile g1 but i can never find it does someone have it.

I believe there is a paid app in the market.
i have tried that 100 times and all i see is 144 results and they are mostly
ahome themes
someone told me "You will need jf 1.5 for it to work though" but that for adp1 and i have the rc-33.. and i dont know the difference between both of them.

-mannyb is right, no posting of warez "forum rule #6" my bad....-
You may need to register for the forums but I highly recommend it. I frequent their site as much as I do XDA.
would i be able to download the apk file there????
Not sure if linking to a forum with pirated apps is allowed here. I might be wrong though.
They have tons of apps and games there, but they just offer up links to the downloads. I still recommend signing up there but the direct link is;
hope you got to go download, i'd rather not lose my forum privileges by posting warez. I should have read the forum rules.
btw if anyone knows of a free screenshot app I would love to know.
I'm not sure if posting to a site like that is allowed or not, if it isn't the mods are more than welcome to delete my post. I'm not here to cause trouble, just here to help out my android brethren.
It looks like a useful site, no doubt.
thank you for that..... if you want you can take of the link if you think its a bad idea. i already downloaded it. how did you find that link??
i found the link to that site one day in my searching for other apps a while ago. it is a very useful site, but unfortunately yes it is mostly about pirating of apps.
thank you man.
know i just gotta mess with it,..
also i updated my rc-33 to a adp1 1.5 update and i lost my im app and autorotate and my theme so not i gotta fix those problems
dxtop does screen shots now...
and if you looked a page or two back, theres this exact same thread, and the exact same results..
Theres an a app thats part of the SDK that is for debugging that will take screenshots, I think its DDSK its real simple to use. just make sure you have the latest version of java installed.
open up a command prompt and navigate to android-sdk\tools then type in DDSK and it will open up the debugger then there is the option in the view menu to take screenshot once the phone is connected.
( you need to install the adb drivers for the phone and have the debug enabled settings>applications>development>enable debug)
The good thing about the screenshot app is that you can take a screen shot pic even when you in the bathroom. Your way is fine its just limited to using only when your on your computer.

It also works on Hero and Rogers builds. I've tested.

This app will download torrents directly to your phone. This is not a remote control app.
Version 4.5.1 has been uploaded. http://androidtorrent.googlecode.com/files/AndroidTorrent4.5.1.apk
4.5.1
This release fixes the speed in which the torrents start.
4.5
Added better navigation
All the force close issues should be resolved now.
To do:
Allow to run in the background
Hook up the search piece vi isohunt
Allow for downloading of large files.
<tech speak>right now, keeping the hash map in memory will grow the heap to 16 meg in a hurry on large files. I think if i keep the hash maps in a sqlite database then it may solve the issue</>
Trying it out now, get back with an update later.

i know ,, it is crazy how good the android OS.
how do you get this to work..
i downloaded the torrent files..what do i do next???
does this work just like youtube downloader??
where when you click on a youtube video, the downloader will pops up
but for this one...... when i click on torrent files on the site.
it just go straight to download ..........
So when it says you file is downloading, that means its downloading the torrent right? It doesnt give a percentage on how much is complete and how many user connected to? No upload and download speeds?
Not bad, I downloaded a 700mb file and it just finished now. I was on wi-fi, but little under 2 hours isn't bad at all. Just wish it would have progress and such. Any chance for that stuff in future updates or too complicated?
It works ok but very basic. As a few other people have stated I would like to see a progress bar. It never told me my file was finished I just happened to notice that it was on my sd card. Other than that I would like to see the standard torrent info like speed, time left, and how many peers. Other than that please add the option to select individual file from a torrent file. uTorrent can do this and is nice if you only need 1 or 2 file from the torrent and not the whole thing.

I'm not sure if I can do individual files, I will work on it though.
I will add in a better UI, progress bar etc. this was mostly a proof of concept.

You have to open the torrent file in the browser download manager, or from a file manager.
the api to open the download manager is not public and doesnt work on all roms, so i cant just have it popup like i want.
This program works. just needs a good GUI.
Cool, I'll have to try it out. How's it affect the battery and stability of the phone?
Hope this doesn't have any adverse effects on our data plans...
Price, Bandwidth, etc...
I'm working on a file manager for the first page, so you can browse to the torrent to download and then I'm working on better indicators/ui for whats happening.
As far as stability, with Rosie running I quickly run out of memory if I try to download something too big. Without rosie it seems to be fine.
Haven't tested it for battery life, but im assuming its going to kill the battery pretty fast if you're downloading a large file (esp over 3g).
I hope to have version 2 out tonight or tomorrow.

I really didn't know notice any effects on my phones speed with roise and downloading a large file. I actually forgot I was downloading it until like the other guy said, I happen to see it in my sdcard and noticed a missed notification saying when it finished.
Other than that its soild stable so far to me. I dunno if it was the video I downloaded but it was corrupted when I tried to watch it. I redownloaded it on my PC with utorrent and it worked fine. I'm not sure what that was all about. I'm gonna try another large file tonight and see what happens.
yep, definitely needs a UI
I've been waiting for this though! Thank you!
One question though... does this always run in the background? (like download manager does) I don't wanna start downloading a 700mb file only to receive a text or phone call and have android kill the process....
Good job though... when you get a UI running please publish on market and I will purchase.
Looking forward to the next version. Keep up the good work.

Whats up with the backdrop? My gf thought I was looking at a picture of my son I mite of had with another woman. Crazy women theses days!!!
How do I download and use the "[email protected]" app from USAA bank from outside the US? It's free but I need to get a legitimate copy of it for obvious reasons. I emailed USAA and did the obvious Google searches before posting this, but I am getting nowhere. I am making the assumption that they are limiting it to the US market (I'm in the UK). I am running a compatible version of Android, so I should see it, but I don't. Here are my basic questions:
1) If I got the .apk somehow and installed it here in the UK, would it work from here?
2) Would using a wifi connection with it be different than a mobile network?
3) If #2 is yes, could I configure my router to use a US proxy?
I really like the idea of taking a picture of a check with my G1, and depositing it that way. If anyone has figured this out please let me know how it works. Thanks.

These are assumptions, not answers:
Most likely it would work from UK in any form you try to use (WiFi/network). I would assume since USAA will have clients outside of the US for obvious reasons there would probably be no check that you're on a US carrier.
If you're having trouble getting the apk, I could download it from the market and send it to you. Send me a PM and I can email it to you.

What phone and version are you using, because I DL'd and tried to install, but it keeps giving me "aaplication not installed".
I'm using Sprint HERO, but version 2.1, so I should be good to go, thanks.
forty01 I'm using the latest stable Cyanogen build (4.2.15.1) on a HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1. I downloaded the .apk to my desktop, then transferred it to the memory card on the phone over USB, and disconnected the cable. Then I just navigated to the .apk file in Astro file manager and opened it (touch the .apk file in Astro and then touch "open app manager"). I've got the phone's SD card partitioned with the apps running off that (apps to SD). You probably did the same thing but I'm covering all the basics here to avoid any confusion. Hope you get it working. If I left anything out here just ask for help again.
Yess i have the htc eris and can not find the mobile banking app for regions can any one help??
That was downloaded from the market just before I posted it (10Mar2010). I'm running a G1, but I'm not sure that makes any difference. I'm a little noobish when it comes to apks
I overlooked something obvious here but I'm learning. I just tried the "Market Enabler" and now I see the USAA app from overseas. That's got to be the simplest way to grab it, and keep it updated.

Not on Cupcake (Android 1.5), it runs on Donut (Android 1.6) or higher.
From the USAA website... "The Android app is free and available now for devices running the Android operating system version 1.6 or later."
You will have to upgrade to a newer version of Android before installing. When you do, grab the USAA app directly from the market. Use the Market Enabler (search for it) to get the app if you are outside the USA. Good luck.
Reviving this thread. I have a GSM Hero (U.K, unlocked, not Orange) running Android 2.1 and still cant find this USAA app in the market. Anyone know why?
** Update August 2011, I removed the attachment, it's a year old. The only correct way to do this from outside the US is to root, use Market Enabler, and get it in the Marketplace.
Here's the newest version of the app, attached below. (Removed)
First thing you need is a file browser to navigate to the .apk, once it's on your phone's memory card. Find a file browser in the market if you don't have one yet. You will have to enable installing third-party sources, your phone will prompt you if you haven't already. The problem with this method is that you can't update the app, and you have to trust my attachment as being safe.
A better way is to root your phone, and install Market Enabler (Google it). Requires root access, but it works perfectly. You can use it over wifi, 3G, whatever. You can use it to browse a lot of different markets. Plus, you can download the USAA app directly from the market, and update it that way, too.
Post a reply or PM me if that doesn't work out for you. Also, email USAA and ask them to make it available outside the US. I did, and they aren't ready to do it yet. Silly, considering who their members are. Just my opinion.

I agree with everything you said. Did you actually talk to USAA about that? Yeah, I went looking for Market Enabler etc, but you need root (as you said). I can't find a reasonable guide for rooting a stock 2.1 GSM Europen Hero (unbranded/unlocked). Is there one?

Yep, I emailed and then mentioned it to the phone rep when I called about something unrelated.

This looks promising. [theunlockr.com] Third line for "unbranded European users"
One thing I didn't think to mention yet is to try something like App Brain. I haven't used it yet but it's pretty popular on this and other android forums. I think you can set up an account on the website, load their app on your rooted or un-rooted phone, and load apps that way. Worth a try.

Thanks so much r4d14n7. I was having problems getting the app from the market as well. I live in Belgium.
But now that I got the app up and working, I tried to use [email protected] and it is telling me it cannot find my location. I have GPS and wifi on and both the maps application and my web browser on my vibrant are working. Any suggestions?
tpmaxwell2 I've never seen it try to get my location. I don't think it needs it. USAA is just limiting the download availability to the US. Once you get the .apk, anyone can use it. I'm using it no problem from the UK and it never switches on my GPS, nor is there any delay launching the app. It just comes right up. I posted an updated version in post #14, scroll up a little to see it. I've got that version running on both my rooted G1 and a stock, unrooted Desire from here in Europe. If you try it and still get location errors or other problems, post here again so we can figure out the problem.

On the version I just downloaded I cant even get into [email protected] without getting this error: "your location is required to use [email protected] please enable location services on your device and retry."
So I enabled wifi location and the app worked! Thanks so much!!
FYI...
I ran across this thread after trading in my iPhone 3gs for a HTC Desire HD. I went into the market to download the USAA app, and it couldn't be found. As suggested above, I installed market enabled, set as a t-mobile phone, then searched again. The USAA app showed up in the search, I installed it, and it works fine. BTW, I'm in the UK as well. Hope this helps for anyone else having the same problem.
There are several posts here for fixes to get the full Market and I'm one of the unfortunate that none of these fixes work for me. Different roms, countless restarts and FC never worked. I was talking to a friend and he told me to download market enabler. Further digging pointed to me MarketAccess - an updated version without the ads. From what I've heard, Android Market will limit what you can 'see' depending on the service/carrier you have with your cell phone. And since we're on a tablet, that may be why some of us are SOL.
Market Access will trick Android Market into thinking you have a cell phone carrier with your tablet. For example, I chose T-mobile for the U.S. and I now have Kindle and Nook; two apps I couldn't download before.
I'm going to continue testing this and see what else I can get. For now, those were the two I couldn't see and I now have them installed through the Market.
You can find MarketAccess be googling... yes, Market Access. The site should be amip.tools (can't post links yet)
Is this what your talking about?

Are you sure this is safe and legal?
That's it. I didn't see anything that would make this illegal. Do you?

Well not that I see. I would like to here what other members here think of this method though.
I would love to be able to access the full Market too but I am, like you, one whose attempts to fix Market did not work. However, unlike you, even with the fix you led me to, my gtab continues to not be able to see the full Market apps. Bummer. But thanks anyway.

Reggie, Did you try different carriers when running the app? Some apps may be specific to the cell phone service.
Which apps are you looking for anyway?
Yeah this fix didn't really work for me either. Honestly if I need an app badly enough and its not showing I just download to my phone back it up to my dropbox app folder and sideload it right from dropbox on mt g-tab. Works great for me and I have a backup or the app also.
I'm giving it a try and see what it does.

Please excuse this totally noob-like question, but does your phone have to be rooted to do this? I have an unrooted Droid 1 and I'm trying to figure out where the apks live. Also, how do you back up to the drop box?
Thank

Hi,
The webpage says:
"MarketAccess, as well as MarketEnabler requires root available on the device. It means than you need to unlock your phone and install the su application which will manage permissions for other apps that want to get root on the device. Google for details."
Jim
I tried this to look for a specific app. Upon further inspection I don't see anything in there using this that wasn't in there using the Market Fix. Am I missing something? For what its worth, I'm looking for Colorize Widgets.
Thanks for your reply Jim. I must have misunderstood. I thought ecatapano's fix avoided using MarketAccess and MarketEnabler by accessing and "drop boxing" apks from an Android phone then sideloading them to the g-tab through drop box. I just don't know how to get the apks from the Droid to the drop box.

I've seen mention of using Astro file manager to backup, which I guess puts the APK on sdcard, then you have to have dropbox installed on your Droid, and you can then send the APK to dropbox.

I installed the market enabler,or whatever its called. I defaulted to t mobile as my carrier. I'm not certain what you are supposed to do for setup after that. So I went back into Market and found Colorize Widgets. I'm not convinced market enabler had any influence though. Any feedback on using market enabler is appreciated.
I tried it, set to tmobile USA. Still can't see
Adobe flash
adobe air
Firefox
tank hero
I couldn't see colorize Widgets after setting similar so I did market fix - clear cache etc. Then could see it, but still not others above.

Have you loaded Firefox on the g Tab?
I didn't get a chance to mess with this last night. It seems like everyone is trying T-Mobile. Has anyone tried different carriers?
