I'm an android noob, but I'm trying to figure this system out.
I just did the 2.2 froyo update on my stock rogers captivate, and after some worrying because of a boot screen lock up, I have my phone running. One thing i noticed was the status bar won't adjust my screen brightness any more. Before, swiping left to right would decrease brightness, and right to left vice versa. It doesn't do that any more.. is this because of froyo? Can i have this option back?
The book sequence is messed up. First the rogers logo comes, then it goes to the S, sits for about 15 seconds and then proceeds to the phone menu. During this, I have a couple random vibrations. Is this anything to be concerned about? I rely heavily on phone reliability.
I've never rooted because I'm overwhelmed with the process and I'm afraid of bricking my only phone.. Should I be overly worried about bricking?
Will rooting grant me access to some killer apps?
Thanks for your patience,
Mike
I've never heard of the notification slide brightness thing your talking about. Never had it on my cappy or any roms I've used. And your boot sequence sounds about right, I wouldn't worry about it vibrating unless you blatently see it causing problems.

workin just fine here on Andromeda
I figured it out, I have to slide my finger really slow and it will register.
Back to my rooting question. I'm a mostly a weekend tweaker, not an all-out hacker. Should I consider rooting? I'm mostly content with my android, other than some browsing issues and lag from time to time. Would rooting grant me more benefit? I'm just concerned with damaging my phone as it is my only handset, so if I wreck it.. it's over until i get another phone or this one fixed.. whats your opinion gentlemen?
Rooting is almost painless and has next to 0 for error factors.
You have two options. You can either a search for OneClickRoot, or you can DL the file that I've attached to the post and rename it to Update.Zip on the BASE of your internal SD card. Reboot into recovery mode. Then "Reinstall Packages".
Let me know how it goes for you

Have a Nexus One which was updated OTA to FRF91 (or 93, or whatever it is now). However, I've never seen coloured trackball notifications.
Right now I've got Gmail, Email, SMS, and Facebook notifications all waiting, and I'm still getting the same white flash every 15 seconds. Do I need to install an aftermarket app to get this to work? Was under the impression that it "just works" in Froyo.
Cheers,
Dave
Only works for some things, not all.
Google Voice is green - that's all I've seen...

Install Blink, that'll sort some notifications out.
So I installed Blink and set it all up. Text message light works and it's blue now. I set the incoming call light to orange, however when I call from my home phone it's still white. Any ideas? :s

If you're rooted use leofroyo, kang-o-rama or rodriguez - they all have trackball alert working, you will find them in developers section.
This is what I miss, since I've come to CM6 (nightly passion) - and it's just a matter of time teamdouche will soon come up with solution.
Nope I am not rooted and don't think I want to either to be honest. Don't really see any advantage and process just seems too complicated with the risk of ruining the phone. I am not really in the mood to brick my phone. lol
The only advantage I see of rooting is being able to move all the apps I download on the SD card so it doesn't take that much room on my phone. But apparently people are saying Froyo does that, which I have too. But I only see that 'move to sd card' option for few apps. Most of them aren't clickable and that option is greyed out. Out of 10-11 apps I have so far, only 3 I was able to move to sd card. Any ideas?
Incoming call light is white because the colour can only be changed when the screen is off.

i mean unless you completely F up and dont read the instructions at all, u cant really brick the phone unless u pull the battery or if it dies while flashing the radio. other than that, idk of any other way to brick your phone. this is what i was scared of my first time but its rather easy after the first time or two. if youre rooted, just get trackball alert pro. its worth it
My phone freezes at times when i open the image gallery.
Just to give more info on the freeze: The phone becomes unresponsive (but if i have music playing, it will continue), after some time, the phone seems to restart, but not in the traditional sense. Like the lock screen will comeback, it will say no service...until it finds service, it will scan the SD cards...but the touch screen will remain completely unresponsive. If i hold the power button, the power off, flight mode and silent mode context menu will appear but i can't do anything because the screen wont response to my touch. The only way i can get it working again is removing the battery, which is annoying.
Is anyone experiencing this issue with the image gallery?
Also, when i send an image to my friend (BB user) it takes like 20 hours before he receives it, this isnt an exaggeration. I sent an image at 3pm, he got it at 8am. This is an issue for me. The image size was less than 200kb.

Im using the rogers stock rom. (Android 2.1), normally i would just use a different gallery, but honestly i really like the one the phone came with. The phone is rooted and i applied OCLF. Other than that, there are no major modifications.
I have the same problem, it used to just lag a little bit but just now it completely froze. I had to take out the battery to restart. Should we be worried?
Any help from experienced users would new wonderful! Thanks!
same problem, rogers stock 2.1
now that i know i am not the only one with this problem, i think there may be something wrong with the rogers rom itself, and not my phone.
About 10-20% of the time it will just fail to load the gallery and freeze on me forcing a hard restart

Yea this has been a huge problem for me and a real annoyance. Im just waiting until my exams are over so i can figure out how to get off stock rom and flash something we a working gallery. Its embarrassing when ur trying to show off ur phone and it freezes just by opening up the gallery
Just flashed Serendipity, so far I like it. I do have one quick question tho:
Is it possible to have my phone set up to vibrate when I receive Texts/Phonecalls with this ROM?
I've tried everything that I can think of in the settings menu and haven't had any luck yet. And I searched the Serendipity ROM thread but didn't find anything specifically talking about this.

Go to Settings->Sound and set Vibrate to always, but I don't know that that works for SMS, you may have to set that manually, so go into the SMS app, then go menu->settings there, then go to notification settings and set vibrate to always in there as well.
In the sound settings, gor for the last option. It's disabled, so choose the option above it, turn it on, set the vibrate strenght and turn off the above one, it will save the options and vibration strength.
Attempted both of those:
I have my vibration intensity turned up to the maximum level and still have absolutely no vibration whatsoever.
Does anyone know of a vibration fix or anything for the Captivate that might alleviate this issue?
Try this: go into the SMS app>Settings>Notification Settings>Vibrate Pattern
You can set it to Normal/Medium/Long/Multiple Short/Multiple Long.
That should work for you!

I believe you are talking about the "Haptic Feedback", right? If so, then I don't think this effects incoming notifications. That is only for the vibration per screen touch...
Tried what you mentioned seth and still have no luck.
I have no haptic feedback and have no vibration when receiving a phonecall or text message.
I attached some screen captures I took showing that I have the proper boxes checked.
I have no vibration whatsoever however. I receive no haptic feedback when I hit my home soft key and I receive no vibration when I receive a text/phone call.
I'm kind of at a loss for what to do because I haven't seen any other threads about similar issues around the forum. Any ideas?
edit: oh, BTW, I flashed back to stock and then flashed Phoenix ROM thinking maybe I had a bad flash with the flashing of the Serendipity ROM but the problem persists.

Hmm. Well that sucks.
The loss of my haptic and vibration is really the only thing not working exactly like I want it to so I guess I'll just do without unless something else begins to act up.
Thanks for the input tho.

Happened on my iPhone before I got my Captivate. Got so used to it, I disable all vibrating/haptic on every rom anyway.
Most of the time if you are having trouble with vibration settings, download the "Sound Manager" app from the Market. It can fix a lot of notification problems.
Anyone besides me notice this is posted in the COMPLETELY wrong section?

Just got the xperia z yesterday (after my previous lg 4x was stolen... grrr... may the thief get permanent bursting hemorroids...) and I noticed a weird thing.
The mute/vibrate/sound toggle in the notification bar does not seem to work, and the same goes for the one in the popup shown by pressing the power button for a couple seconds.
Details: the mute or vibrate icon appears on the notification bar, but if I check the volumes in settings, they're still all on, and if I receive a call or get a notification or whatever, the phone actually rings despite the supposedly muted state.
All this doesn't happen if I "manually" turn the volume off with the volume buttons or via settings: in that case the vibrate icon appears and the phone actually does not ring.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?
All good here dude. Hope you get it fixed. Have you tried turning phone off and on again? That usualy fixes small.glitches.

Yep, already tried that of course, as well as uninstalling the one widget I have that interacts with volumes, just to be sure it was not some weird conflict (and of course it wasn't)
Not a biggie actually, as I can turn it down manually or by said widget, but I hope I'll figure it out anyway if only for the sake of understanding the source of the issue
Yep I understand that. Annoys me when I cant get something working lile its ment to.

I have a problem with the toggle in the notification bar and the power off menu. System settings show me notifications and ringtones are off, but the phone still has audible, unmuted notification sounds. Really annoying.

Actually, I could try a factory reset just to be sure, but I admit I'm kind of too lazy to set my stuff up again from scratch only to try and fix that small glitch

Heard about it, but haven't read the whole thing yet (yep, still being lazy)
Jokes apart, I was planning to leave it 100% stock for at least a little while to see how the battery behaves without even the slightest piece of modding (got the phone only last friday, today has been the first real "field test" for the battery and so far I'm pretty positively impressed)
Well I have already removes/frozen a bucketload of apps happy bunny, I am. Now I only need to figure out which app does what so I don't kill something and make my phone less usable.

lol I removed a few apps too, but luckily for me they were uninstallable without root or anything.
I also disabled a few more through the stock apps management, for the time being it's sufficient for my taste

Yes, having the same problem as well with mine. But it has been the same problem since I had ICS on my Xperia Arc S, then Xperia V and now this when I use the toggle in the notification bar or any other toggle aside from toggling it manually via setting. Very irritating since it has never and probably will never be fixed due to the fact that it's a cross-model issue. Chances are, those who say they don't have this problem already has it but don't know it yet or will get it eventually. Sony needs to iron this out once and for all
I have this phone last month then return it for screen issue. I just wonder does the software update solve the screen sensitive issue? otherwise it is a great phone. I will buy it again
Nothing has been fixed as far as I can tell.

I really wish that worked for me, I've installed that app 4 different times at least and tried 4 different settings and it never makes a difference. I've noticed the biggest difference when I just forget about it, if I look for it then it drives me crazy. We have root, unlocked bootloader and recovery so now I wait for a real fix.
