[Q] 'Back' key hanging/lagging after custom rom flash [SOLVED] - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
First off, please forgive my posting this thread into the general, but I'm still restricted to posting replies in the dev subsection where the Darky thread is at.
I'm a Bell vibrant user, and I'm having big issues with Darky's 9.0.2; my first custom ROM.
I updated from ugjl2, so I have the sbl.bin that [hopefully] avoids the corrupt SD issue.
I downloaded darky and speedmod kernel to get a CWM. I flashed the speedmod with ODIN fine. I then added the ROM to my internal SD and used CWM to apply it. All went well. I used the full wipe ROM.
Now that I'm running Darky's though, it's wonderfully smooth and responsive except that every once in a while, when I press the BACK button, it just hangs.... for like, 45-120 seconds or more. I get impatient and hit HOME and it snaps a screenshot; as if I were pressing both buttons simultaneously. Locking the screen with the power button then unlocking seems to help most, but not all of the time.
Is this because I'm using the VooDoo kernel (default option) without applying the VooDoo lagfixes? Darky states that this ROM automatically uses the ext4 filesystem, which should negate the need for the voodoo lagfix. Would I be better off to just apply the default lagfixes in CWM or reflash with the speedmod kernel selected in darky's configurator?
What are other culprits that could cause he otherwise fast system to hang on pressing back.... there doesn't seem to any pattern to when it happens that I can find... but it does happen quite a bit.
I searched the forums for this, but found no hits, any help is appreciated and TYIA.

You can grab the "android Terminal emulater " from market .. Type in "mount " and See your partitions and filesystems.. i dont think the default is ext4, its rfs..
Sent from my Galaxy S using XDA App

You're absolutely right.
All of my partitions seem to be RFS.
Odd though because in the features section of darky's thread it says explicitly that it converts all partitions to ext4. Oh well.
What's the recommendation then? Shouldn't RFS also not require lagfixing? I thought it was the samsung ext2 partitions that caused the lag.
In any case, this doesn't feel like regular lags, the system straight up hangs on pressing the back button sometimes.

ieatrocks,
I would check that the lagfix is installed.
I upgraded to Darky's v8.1 on Sunday just before v9.0 came out. v8.1. did not have lagfix installed by default so I manually ran through CWM which is there is an option to run. This made things smoother.
I then flashed to v9.02 this morning and it feels faster and smoother. My understanding is that you do not need to uninstall lagfixes and not that it is automatically installed but please check in CWM. I think the only option to convert is ext4. RFS is the laggy one which is why it converts to ext4. I also enabled all of the recommended tweaks.
Hopefully, this will give you what you expect as the experience is great for me.

Ok, trying both voodoo default options now. Will report back in a few. Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Not 100% gone but a *whole* lot better.
Thanks

I noticed the very odd stutter but not as bad as you mentioned. Have you checked the recommended tweaks? Other option is a wipe if possible. For me, this is a whole lot better than I've ever had

I'm surprised, running Darky's new rom and don't have any lags. I'm not running any lagfixes since android 2.2.1 therefore still on the RFS.
I'm using speedmod kernel though, I had some reboot problem with voodoo on Darky 8.0 . Maybe you should try to fully wipe it clean and reinstall after backing up your data, that's what i usually do, it's better to start fresh!

does any know how to change the color of text from green to default , in the messaging app?

i think your back button gets stuck, because you have mentioned that if you press the home key, it takes a screenshot.
i think somebody else had this problem too. he solved it by some way but i cant remember where it was right now.
just use the search option for 'back button stuck'.
hope it helps.
edit: i think he updated his touchkey firmware by a secret code but i am not sure.

your post should be deleted...
The Rom doesn't apply by him self any lag fixer.
Use the configurator with option WIPE, reapply Darky Rom and them post issues...

I used the search function. Do you have any idea how many false hits about generic lags I got? I spent a couple of hours looking before posting my detailed situation here.
Darky's by default uses the full wipe option if you're on any rom other than a previous version of Darky's; so my install was a full WIPE. I stated that pretty obviously in my first post. Why you would fly off the handle and start cursing out new users without having the common courtesy or sense to actually read what they wrote before presenting yourself as some sort of rageaholic on a forum is just bizarre.
Thanks to the guy who suggested I look into the firmware update; I can run with that.

Found that thread and everything is fixed now!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869492
Updated my firmware in Darky's and lost both buttons, Turned off the lagfixes, flashed back to ugjl2, updated the touchkey firmware, reflashed speedmod for CWM, and finally re-applied Darky's with a full wipe.
Perfect!
No lagfixes applied on this fresh install yet and everything is working great.
Gave you thanks on the post for the tip.

Hahahaha oh man, I wasn't trying to cast gloom on your awesome ROM Darkyy.
The touchkey firmware hang/lag and fix weren't related to your ROM at all. It looks like it would have happened anyways no matter which ROM I used, I just happened to pick yours.
...which I am enjoying a lot btw. Thanks for all the hard work
EDIT: I found out how to change my thread title, so no more false bad advertising for Darkyy.

Dude... chill out.. what you getting so upset about.. he's asking a question so he's in the right place, we all started off newbies needing some guidance, Its not the end of the world no body forced u to read / reply to this thread.. jeeez.. go take yourself for a long walk.. of a short pier...

soo... :-" has any of you guys come up with an ideea to change the green text from the messaging app back to normal ? pls?

fllipper that should be handled by the theme. AFAIK any deodexed rom can be updated with themes that alter the look including the color and text schemes of the default apps that you normally can't change.
The right place to ask this is in the themes and apps subforum. I may be completely wrong with the theme advice, but I'm reasonably sure there is an entire subforum dedicated to questions like yours.

A dozen questions from a noob

Hi guys just got my galaxy S and I am currently running on Doc Rom's latest build with Hardcore 15Q 500hz kernel but I have a ton of questions I don't understand. I have been trying to read the forums as best as I can but I still can't find the answers I'm looking for. Please explain in layman's terms I cam from the Desire and N1 and things were pretty straight forward over there. ROM+Kernel+Radio
1. What's voodoo?? and Lagfix?? Kernels from what I understand but why are there so many spinoffs and variations and modifications?? Are they required? If I made a rom from docs kitchen does it come with these? Do I still need to install them after?
Because when I read the directions it says to close any lagfixes before flashing. Can anyone give me the correct sequence of what I am supposed to flash to the phone??
2. Is there an automatic text reflow feature for the browser similar to HTC SENSE wherein the text resizes even after you've really zoomed in and not just double tapped?
3. I read in doc roms kitchen that back light notification is included but I cant get it to work. Do I have to flash the kernel in BLN's thread? Wouldn't that overlap whatever kernel I got on my rom?
4. How do I get battery percentage for my rom?
5. Is there a mod wherein you can enable the home button to unlock the phone while in the lockscreen? Similar to the one Cyanogen is using for the desire and N1
6. Whats JPY / JS3 / JPX??? I assume its official firmware from samsung, is JS3 the newest?
Thanks for helping an extremely confused noob!
hmm right where to start ...... 1st of all voodoo is a kernel same as speedmod both have an option to install a lagfix (speeds up the phone basically ) but this is optional and is usually contained in CWM (ClockworkMod) CWM is a more advanced recovery method where you can flash new roms and apply tweaks do resets ect.. ( to get into recovery press Volume up + Home button + Power button all together )
there are so many versions of ROMs + Kernels because alot of people on here are developers and like to modify their phones.. If your not too sure if this will benefit you, i suggest you dont bother as 1 little mistake can turn your phone into a very expensive paper weight.
BLN is an app which will make the buttons light up if you get a txt, email, ect without lighting up the whole screen (which drains battery) there is a similar app names NoLed available in the market.
as for the automatic text reflow i dunno what that is if you mean multitouch this phone supports it ( pinch to zoom and all that **** )
JPY JPX JS3 are firmwares JS3 being the latest. and finally for the mod of making the home button unlock the phone i dont think ive seen that done on the SGS yet.. but there are alot of different Unlock screens you can get from flashing.
oh and the battery percentage thingy thats included in some roms. otherwise there is an app called circular battery ( google it )
but as said earlier.. if you do decide to customise your phone make sure you FULLY UNDERSTAND what you are doing.. if you have doubts dont do it, read a bit more and post some Questions on here till you are confident enough, as no body on here is responsible for damaging your phone except you !!...
Hope all that helps sorry for such a long post

When in CWM and tweaking lagfix options theres an item that enables it. Does this mean that by default the lagfix is turned off when I flash the kernel or rom? Is it recommended?
What does convert system to ext4 / RFS do? Is it recommendable?
Do I have to partition my sdcard or something for this to work?
Whats the tweak option and is there anything that I should do for better performance?
and lastly when I reboot after enabling lagfix it asks me if I should convert and it proceeds to backup. What just happened? Is there anyway to revert? Will it mess up my files?
Oh and btw I'm using Doc's Rom and theres an options under display to change my lockscreen. It gives me the option of changing from stock android, samsung or whatever else but it doesn't seem to work. Do I have to do something to enable it or is this still a WIP?

I read the spreadsheet but still cant understand what the difference between voodoo and speedmod kernel is. Shouldn't voodoo be bettter?
like everyone says on here about the battle of voodoo vs speedmod. there is no better / worse its personal choice both work brilliantly so u decide which to use.
as for lagfix its disabled as default but you enable it via CWM when speedmod asks to backup its best to do it incase of any trouble ( VERY RARE ) you do not need to partition your sd card.
ext4 is just where data is saved instead of rfs, its quicker this way hence the name LAGFIX and its optional, but it works
doing anything other than what samsung say is risky, but the clever people over here on XDA know what they are doing and thats what makes the SGS better. your files wont get deleted unless you do a wipe (manually or wipe version of ROM )
Oh and the lockscreens are changeable in 'settings' if not check out the threads ( or where you downloaded your ROM from )
I think I got it. Thanks buddy! Really appreciate it!

[Q] [KERNEL] SpeedMod Captivate [K12T HPCall VoodooSnd4 SharpnessFix STABLE] on I896?

Hello,
Sorry to sound like a complete noob in advance!
I have a new Samsung Captivate I896 on Rogers in Canada. I have ryans OCLF lagfix installed atm but i'm really interested in flashing this rom (will be my first one) and am wondering if it will work on this phone.
Also, is it just a backround fix? Will I still be able to use launcher pro, and will my phone still look the same with Froyo 2.2?
thanks in advance!

Speedmod is not a ROM, but a kernel.
As to your other questions, you have a LOT of reading left to do.

Agreed. Just to be save do alot of reading before attempting anything really lol. There are stickies in the Development section start there.
Ok so I did a little more reading. I896 and I897 are essentially the same. I'm not flashing a rom, just a kernel, so there should be no issue with the 3G problem mentioned in the wiki.
It won't change my rom or anything about the device other then how the filesystem works.
Thanks!

Hi, I'm pretty new here too, and I have to tell you that know one will give you a straight answer. There's a lot of' tribal knowledge', and it seems that people would rather teach you how to unbrick your phone than to flash it without issue.
First of all, hook up to Samsung Kies and update your phone to Froyo. If you are on Rogers it's an official update, don't worry about flashing any other roms yet.
Next, Use the option in the OLCF to unlagfix.
Next, you will need to root your phone. OCLF is practically obsolete, as the developer does not update anymore. Your best bet is Superoneclick. Read all instructions first. It is very easy and effective.
After you have the phone rooted, you can now install Titanium Backup. This will save all of your apps, contact info, settings, virtually everything on the phone, it will save them to a folder on your external SD. drop and drag this folder to your desktop in case anything goes wrong. I never had a problem.
You should backup your kernel. I used Neldar's SGS Kernel Flasher. It will save your kernel as an 'update.zip' in your root folder. Drag this to your desktop and put it into a folder called 'i897 orig kernel' or what have you, in case something goes wrong. I never had a problem.
Now you can flash SpeedMod. The developer's website, which is linked to in the thread's first post, will walk you though it. You will first need to install ODIN. The SpeedMod developer has a step-by-step on how to flash SpeedMod using ODIN on the developer's page. Make sure you choose a Speedmod Kernel that is intended for the Captivate, not the I9000, and that you chose the one for ODIN, not the ClockWorkMod version. Follow the steps in the Developer's page.
When you have done that, reboot into recovery mode and you should see Green Text. From here you can enable the lagfix and other tweaks. use the volume keys to select the option you want and the power button to select. under the options, it will show you which tweaks you have enabled or disabled.
Remember to select the most stable SpeedMod release, the one that is posted in the Forum (K12U-T4) is a TEST VERSION, hence the 'T'. The latest stable version as of this writing was K12T, as posted in the developer's page. I have had great results with this one.
You may find that you don't need to flash a custom ROM, I have found this setup very satisfying.
Good Luck!
Wow,
Thank you so much clemmie! That's was succinct and very helpful, especially the part about the proper way to back up my stuff.
I uninstalled OCLF just now, and it seems my phone runs at the same speed (aka fast) as it did with the lag fix installed!
Going to flash this kernel tonight or tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again!
Good to hear. There would be a lot less smoke and mirrors if people would just be straightforward and post step by step instructions with links, to give people what they want. I hope what worked for me will work for you, and I encourage you to share what you learn as well.
Kernel flash done! Screen is initially very different looking thanks to the amoled mod. Success! Backed up, thanks for all the help.
hey clemmie,
i heard that there's some issues with voice quality due to the Speedmod kernel being initially i9000-based and that it's recommended to flash a i9000-based modem. Are you having any issues with using a stock i896 modem or do you recommend something else?
Yeah, that is true, but I haven't had any problems with the stock modem. The phone works as well in-call as any other I've owned. I wonder if there is a difference between the AT&T build vs. the Rogers build. It seems that it's the AT&T folks that have issues.
Hi,
I've been wanting to do this but I'm a bit wary if this will put the ATT splash screen on boot as well. Also, I like how my phone looks like now with ADW launcher and beautiful widgets installed, I'm just wondering if installing this mod would change my appearance settings too.

Are you on Rogers? Earlier versions of the SpeedMod kernel had the AT&T splash screen, but newer versions have a simple black screen similar to the stock Samsung boot logo.
Installing the SpeedMod kernel will not change the configuration, apps, or settings of your apps. There are some settings that you can tweak in recovery mode but they are mostly file system tweaks. You will however notice that screen resolution is sharper. Your phone will run smoother and more efficiently with better battery life. You can still flash any custom or stock ROM with SpeedMod or without SpeedMod.
Yes I am on Rogers. However, I can't seem to find the stable version K12T that you mentioned on your instructions from the developer's page.
If you click on the hotlinked 'SpeedMod' in my 'tutorial' post, it will take you to the XDA page dedicated to the SpeedMod revisions. Right now there is a 13A Test version posted, but the latest stable version is now K12U. If you click where it says 'more info and downloads', it will take you to the developer's(Hardcore) blog, 'Tourist In Paradise'. The revisions are listed there. I would bookmark this page and check back frequently, as Hardcore is constantly updating. However, I'll link you to the latest stable release for ODIN, K12U:
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B-3n...WJmNTUtZDVmNThmMmNhZTRm&export=download&hl=en
Thanks for that! I just did this and although it didn't show the ATT boot screen, it shows the Galaxy S I 897 screen after the I 896 though. Thanks again!
Glad to hear you had success. Not so hard after all, eh?
After using this for a day or two:
I can't believe how fast my phone is. I thought it was fast before with (and then without) the oclf. I can barely keep up!
Battery life seems improved.
Screen is perfect. The lowest brightness setting is much better and more comfortable for low light usage.
I lost 1000 points off quadrant, but quadrant doesn't matter.
The only real downside is call quality took a hit. It's a bit static-y and echo-y.
I'll look into this though and see if I can find a solution, but if you have any tips let me know.
Looks like you are a candidate for a modem flash. Let me know if you find something that works, there is a lot of info on swapping modems for SpeedMod. Maybe I'll try one too!
Hey clemmie (or anyone), if I want to install voodoo lagfix - how abouts would I do that if the SpeedMod kernel already comes with / is based on sztupy's Universal Lagfix (enhanced) and if voodoo is a kernel itself (unless I'm wrong about this)?
If you flash the SpeedMod kernel, voodoo lagfix comes integrated with the kernel. It's a master of enabling it from the recovery menu.

Really, it's up to you. Some people like to go back to stock. Some don't. I NEVER odin back unless I want to get rid of voodoo quickly. Here is my procedure; boot into CWM recovery, factory reset, clear dalvik cache, install rom. I have never had any problems with this method.

maybe here ill get a better answer regarding this:
thanks for answering, although it may be true, i have a feeling that it isnt exactly correct for some of the questions i asked. can any one else comment/confirm?
All captivates are not created equally. Meaning you could have two side by side and flash both with the same rom and have one perform better with it than the other. So its all about finding what works best for you

As for me, I disable lag-fix, always Odin back to JF6, Master Clear, then install my new ROM. In the end it's up to you. I've rarely had any issues while doing my flashes this way. majinzen may rarely have any issues doing it his way.
I can only tell you what works for me.

I'm using 5.2 JS5. I did flash to stock and MC before installing (twice).

Regular link is JPY and JS5 link is well, JS5.
Speed on regular is awesome and speed on JS5 is even better. Battery is not an issue on either for me and many others. Keep in mind your results may vary depending on use, modem and kernel should you choose to change it.

Thanks, Adam! I grabbed PicoTts.apk from Darky's v9.3B1 and that solved my problem.
no Bootani anymore
ok so im a bit of a novice flash whore but ive not seen this , i downloaded Pr 5.2JS5, then upgraded the new "c' kernal, all doing well except i cant get the tts.apk to install (stole it from FF 2.2), (ohwell) but i changed my bootani to the new "ashes" via renaming and putting in system/media (overwrite).. now i have nothing....its pauses with a black screen for the alotted time as is there would be one, then it loads the home screen. i tried to revert to the original one by downloading it from -hq , but same result ... did i screw up?
EDIT: This Q&A is a nice touch , i read the hell outa the dev forums, but still have some basic questions now and again .. Thanks!!
Edit: so i pulled the original Bootani from the system/media from a copy on my pc and reapplied it and it works , there may be an issue with the compatability of the "add ons" boot animations at phoenix-hq and the current version "5.2' at the moment , so i guess patience is in order....still having force closes after applying the ttsservice.apk to the rom from other roms..... force closes.
edit: so i hope this helps someone else cause its makin me look like an idiot....the file need for the "Voice input/output" in the settings to stop FC's is "PicoTts.apk", i stole it from the "PR 5.2 JSY" and placed it in the "PR 5.2 JS4"...works fine now! .. but i hear that "adam" isnt going to be supporting the JS4 build any longer....sheesh. lol
I love 4.5 but I have one problem, bluetooth does not want to pair with my Ford sync system, any suggestions or changes I can make? I have tried every thing I can think of but it will not find my phone.
[Q] Phone Call Recorder
I am getting ready to flash Phoenix 5.2. Really like Adam's Roms. however I keep seeing more roms with the call recording in the phone dialer. Does anyone know of a way to transport that feature into Phoenix?
Is it just a matter of grabbing the phone.apk?
Is it even worth it?
Any input is appreciated on the matter. I want to try it but not enough to pull me away from Phoenix, Firefly, or Supernova.
A real noob
I am new to the droid phone, and i have flashed my phone to froyo 2.2. I really like to go to the phoenix rom but have a few questions.
1. I am a very visual person and was wondering if there are any videos on how to install phoenix to captivate phone.
2. I looked at the options for phoenix and still did not see if phoenix supports playing call through car speakers, which is why i'm changing roms in the first place.
3 Which phoenix version would be best suitable for a noob.
Hey,I'm using Phoenix since 2.5 now i'm on 5.2 and it's the best rom I've flashed. The problem is I'm backup everything using Titanium Backup since 3.5 (all apps+system data). Before crossing from 4.5 to 5.2 I've backup everything and then restore all of them. Will this mess up my rom ? I didn't found any problems yet.

General rule of thumb is to back up your user apps and data, but do NOT restore your system settings(data).

Are you able to pair the phone with other bluetooth devices? I'm not familiar with Ford sync or the process for pairing with one... could you describe briefly the normal steps you take to pair to it?

I am new to the droid phone, and i have flashed my phone to froyo 2.2. I really like to go to the phoenix rom but have a few questions.
1. I am a very visual person and was wondering if there are any videos on how to install phoenix to captivate phone.
2. I looked at the options for phoenix and still did not see if phoenix supports playing call through car speakers, which is why i'm changing roms in the first place.
3 Which phoenix version would be best suitable for a noob.

Just to be clear... you've already flashed your Captivate to a 2.2 ROM? If so, which one are you on currently?
1. I don't know of any videos specific to flashing phoenix, however there are videos available on the forums that demonstrate the flashing process (which you've apparently already done once). The process is fairly straight forward even when just following written instructions.
2. Are you talking about playing your call via a built in phone system (such as the previously mentioned sync?)
3. All the Phoenix ROMs have been solid, so I would always recommend going with the latest.

ok so im a bit of a novice flash whore but ive not seen this , i downloaded Pr 5.2JS5, then upgraded the new "c' kernal, all doing well except i cant get the tts.apk to install (stole it from FF 2.2), (ohwell) but i changed my bootani to the new "ashes" via renaming and putting in system/media (overwrite).. now i have nothing....its pauses with a black screen for the alotted time as is there would be one, then it loads the home screen. i tried to revert to the original one by downloading it from -hq , but same result ... did i screw up?
EDIT: This Q&A is a nice touch , i read the hell outa the dev forums, but still have some basic questions now and again .. Thanks!!
Edit: so i pulled the original Bootani from the system/media from a copy on my pc and reapplied it and it works , there may be an issue with the compatability of the "add ons" boot animations at phoenix-hq and the current version "5.2' at the moment , so i guess patience is in order....still having force closes after applying the ttsservice.apk to the rom from other roms..... force closes.
edit: so i hope this helps someone else cause its makin me look like an idiot....the file need for the "Voice input/output" in the settings to stop FC's is "PicoTts.apk", i stole it from the "PR 5.2 JSY" and placed it in the "PR 5.2 JS4"...works fine now! .. but i hear that "adam" isnt going to be supporting the JS4 build any longer....sheesh. lol

I'm also having trouble with my droid explorer. Do i really need that to flash or can i use something different. And just to let you know i really do appreciate you taking the time to help a noob out, really. I have researched this but everytime i have tried it, it does not work. I think i have messed up my vcard cause i'm getting an error when trying to import contacts to my phone so i'm just trying to find the easiest way to do this. So thanks now, thanks later for your help.

FireFly Q&A

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.
Great idea Zel, I am here to help.
I will try to answer the questions the best I can and then have a list of FAQ in this post so people can easily access them.
FAQ
How to flash FireFly? (Method one)
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
How to flash FireFly? (Method two) - the one I usually do
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!

ok..lemme do the honors....quick ques...am flashing firefly 2.2(downloading it now)....i flashed back to stock JF6...do i need to flash to some base ROM for firefly 2.2 to work??
I'm asking cause i was on darky8.1, then flashed directly to 9.3b1 which resulted in incorrect orientation(i9000), then i read the instructions which expected me to flash to base(resurrection), then flash a captivate fix and then flash to 9.3b1...!!!!
You should be able to flash directly as long as you flash FF 2.2 full not the update package.

Nope, you can download the FF 2.2 from the site. LINK
Pick any one of the mirrors. This will get you FF2.2 with the clock in the status bar.
If you want to remove the clock, you can flash the no clock package.
EDIT: Spaz beat me to it. Thx Spaz.
ok cool..thanks!! lookin forward to enjoy this ROM
..its really irritatin to have to flash to base ROM's and then flash to the updated ROM's....

I flash to FireFly 2.2 and its looks awesome + I've been looking for a ROM that had the fix for when I connect the AUX cable to the car radio I can talk to anyone on the phone and hear them on the car speakers... This ROM has that fix finally, I love it... no more Blutooth head sets. But I have a big issue and is that when I make my 3rd or 4th reboot my phone freeze on the "F" boot logo. It does that vibrating action once and then twice like when there's an error. I have flashed my phone before so many times and had no issues and I have been using all FireFly ROM's ever since It came to life. This 2.2 ROM I have flashed like 4 times and I keep having the same problem and I don't want to flash any other ROM only but this one. What can be the reason for this problem? Please Help!

That is quite a strange problem.
Lets try to troubleshoot it.

Did apply any themes?
Glad to have this open since i cant post on the original thread yet
Sent from my Captivate running FIREFLY 2.2
Q: is hsupa enabled on this rom? also i'm in australia using 850/2100 wcdma could there be any issues with this modem?

haven't even recieved my phone yet but i'm already obsessed!
A: ok, JK4 hsupa positive. oops forgot about the modem thread. still any word on 2100 would help.

Not sure! but the only one I can think of would be "Launcher Pro", but I have always used it, and this problem has never happened. When you install it, you need to reboot again in order for Launcher to take effect. I do need to point out that before this flash I when to stock with Odin. I never have the need to do this cause I use too flash directly from "Rom Manager" but lately I was noticing that when I flash using ROM Manager It wasn't taking me to the green menu, it was taking me to what I think it was the stock menu with blue, yellow and a red letters where red was an error message,so that's why I decided to go to stock and then I did all the steps needed in order to flash a New ROM using the thread from the development section then I flash FF 2.2 and ever since when I boot like for the third or fourth time it freezes. I hope for a solution... I'm only digging FireFly right now cause lets face it...
Thanks a lot for your attention...
Several Questions
I've been using Firefly since it came out and upgraded to 2.2 last week. I do have a couple questions after having used 2.2 for awhile.
1. Why were the dark apps removed (gmail & market)? It seems like Firefly has a darker theme and using the modified apps as default makes sense. Maybe a CWM zip containing all the dark apps would be an option or links to the forum pages? I was able to find dark versions of Gmail, Voice, Gtalk, and the Market by searching, but I think it would make more sense from a theming sense for these to be included by default.
2. What's the best way to remove the Samsung Apps? I flashed the zip and messed around with it a bit, but realized I don't need it. You can't uninstall it like normal apps so I was thinking about removing it with TiBu, but I don't want to mess something up. Suggestions?
3. I searched around the forums, but I haven't been able to find a simple answer to this: does this rom support call recording? Is this a kernel issue or simply a rom feature that Firefly hasn't implemented? If this is something simple to do without losing theming, I have no problem with that, if not consider this a feature request.
4. Not sure if this is a Firefly issue or an ESPN issue, but since flashing 2.2 my ScoreCenter app keeps reverting to the user Tron98001. I don't know who this is or how it got on my phone, but it keeps changing all my settings. Everytime I delete the app and wipe the data, it defaults to that same user when I install it again. If I change the user and settings, within about a day it reverts back. Again, I'm thinking this is an ESPN issue, but I was just wondering if anybody was having the same issue since I didn't have a problem until upgrading to 2.2.
You can always try different modems, to see which one works best for you.

1. There were too many bugs involved with the dark apps. I decided that it is best to include stock and let users decide based on their preference.
2. I will have to create a CWM zip that takes care of this. It is not as simple as uninstalling.
3. This ROM does not have call recording. It is considered illegal in many states, to record calls without consent of the other part. I just want to stay away from the mess. Users can install that option on their own.
4. That definitely looks like an app issue.
I believe my ROM is more toward the neutral side and I dont wont to force themed apps (that are buggy) or features that can get them in trouble.
I am just being honest.
Let me know if there are more questions.
As FF is rogers based, can it support usb audio out through the car dock? I downloaded the rogers car dock app and no joy. Changed the kernel to FB2, which should have the fix, and still no joy.
Thanks for the amazing rom though!

I did run into this problem when I flashed Fire Fly 2.2. The only way around it was to uninstall Launcher Pro and then install it again. I am not sure what caused the problem but this did solve it for me. The one downside of this is that all the screen setups that I had got removed. But that is minor to me since I move things around all the time any way.

That fix is still in the works in Xcal's kernel. We will have to wait till it is implemented all around.
Thanks for your quick response. I'll wait for the CWM zip to remove the Samsung Apps. I understand the legallity of call recording and it is something I just wanted to try out, anyways I have a follow up question then: if I apply the phone.apk and libs I found (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938860) would I lose the theming of the dialer that comes with Firefly by default? Do you know of any reason why this wouldn't work?

Bricked Tab???? HELP

HELP! I am so scared...somebody help me!
I tried to installed the Overcome kernel but didn't like it, as each time I boot up, that voice comes up.
And plus, a few of my original apps was lost (including Market). So I thought i'd install with Odin again the:
CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar
And now, when i switch on the tablet, it'll boot with the animation and sound, but then a blank screen.
I can manage to boot into ClockworkMod recovery. Can i be saved? Please somebody help me!
Thanks

If you can boot into CWM, then you should easily be able to get into Download mode as well. You can go back to the stock image for your Tab, or try and reflash a different rom via CWM... sounds like just a bad flash for a soft brick..

Hi there, thanks for reply back to me.
I've managed to actually get it going again, by reflashing to the Overcome kernel.
However, some apps has disappeared and also the market.
Anyways, i wish to revert the whole thing back to stock, kernel and firmware. Is there a way I can do this via Kies?
Let me know what information regarding my tab you need. I believe it is the CPW (GSM) UK version.
cheers

LOL. FYI, your Tab is not haunted. That voice that you refer to, is basically an indicator that the file-system on the Tab is being converted from RFS to EXT4 (what some would affectionately refer to as the lag-fix). You should have left it to continue. That's the reason we ask people to let it finish booting before doing anything else. As always, when it comes to flashing a new firmware/kernel, it's always better to read up and know what to expect.
Anyway, by the looks of it, you might have a corrupted file-system, since you keep shutting it down mid-conversion. That's the reason "the voice" keeps coming back. If you'd allowed it to complete, it should not have returned.
Secondly, flashing the Overcome Kernel alone will NOT remove the Market application. If you were already on the CF-Root kernel, it might remove the CF-Root specific applications like the CwM "app" (and not the recovery functionality, mind you...) and the Tweaks app as these apps were created by ChainFire specifically for his kernel.
Best advice would be to re-flash a stock firmware first, to get your Tab into a clean system. From there, you can continue to to install the kernel of your choice (like ChainFire or Kouxudaxi's fine kernels as well.... these kernels, if I'm not mistaken, do not do automatic EXT4 conversions)
If you're unsure of how to do this, refer to the guide in teamovercome.net and it'll guide you in basic re-stocking (but using our Stock safe package which will provide you with the Gingerbread-based JQ1 firmware).

Hi there,
Thank you so much for your time in replying - I've managed to install what i believe is stock Gingerbread from Samsfirmware. So everything looks back to normal... tho i have posted another Question, with all my firmware details so I can be reassured I am back to stock.
So sorry, I panicked so badly last night..ha!
You have also special thread with many scenarios how to fix your tablet if anything goes wrong.
It helped me yesterday to revive my Galaxy Tab. Just suddenly it started freezing and restarting, after 3 weeks working perfectly on Overcome. Nothing changed, or updated, nothing installed for days, and all what was ever installed are programs I already have on my two other Android phones, it simply froze in the middle of work. Wipe didn't work, changing file system didn't work, etc...

Yup, in future i will be more careful when flashing, so glad that my tablet is back to normal (albeit with the Italian release of GB ) but everything works fine.
Will do more reading on the forums before undertaking any more flashing, make sure i know what i am doing and which Rom is best for me to use.
