Flash Doc's ROM over Darky's v9.1? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
Is it possible to just flash Doc's and Stefunel's ROM over Darky's ROM v8.1 or do I have to follow this guide first?
I understand that I have to disable Lagfix (speedmod ext4)? Or do I?
I've read a lot about both ROM's but can't really find objective/facts pros and cons, on either, if you have something to share I'll be very happy!
Thanks!

Yes you can, you should use the wipe version though seeing as you will be going from a JPY to JS3 base. Unless you select a JPY base in the kitchen in which case you may be able to get away with a non wipe although wipe is always recommended. Use titanium backup to backup/restore settings and apps.
If you are going from a speedmod kernel to another speedmod kernel then no need to disable lagfix
Hope that helped

If you are not experienced in rom flashing, disable the lagfix first. It will only take a few minutes.

Is titanium backup as intuitive as it seems or is there a trick? Something I need to be aware of that can go wrong etc?

I'm guess I'm not experienced and prolly gonna disable lagfix anyways
Thanks for helpful replies!

Did some more reading and stumbled across Titanium Backup Wiki which had everything I asked for!
Thanks anyways! =)

I have already done that. Inspite of so much hype around Darkky rom, his new one disappointed me. I just copied Doc's rom(wipe version) to internal sd card and restarted to recovery. Did a factory reset there. installed zip from there. Very nicely running. Without lagfix also mine is flying. Very happy. Before installing I didn't have any lagfixes enabled.

I take that as a motivation for my next version

As perverse as this sounds, I miss the old days when Darkyy's rom wasn't that popular, when the thread doesn't grow exponentially, when the contents in the thread actually made sense.

Hehe,it's not that I'm dissappointed about your version Darky, just wanna try different ROM's and get my own experiences. My sgs with v 8.1 is incredibly fast and smooth, and so far i have no complaints.

AND none of the i bricked my phone mention Darky rom likewise help i xxx and cannot do xxx after installing Darky rom .
For whatever reason Darky got 100% of the muppets who dont know what they are doing dont read the FAQs and SEARCH has yet to be invented .
Hope its not his rom going to blast into orbit .

What Rom to flash too and some

Hey guys im new to the Captivate. I use to be a heavy iphone user i had the iphone 3g then 3gs then 4 and well i decided its time to take the jump to android. All my iphone were jailbroken so obviously im interested in rooting. I rooted my Captivate the day i got it (Last saturday). I really want to get 2.2 Froyo. Now i keep reading about roms. I know how to load them but what are they, anything you can relate them to as iphone. Now on to my main question since im not to android friendly yet i want a stable 2.2 which one would you recommend to be the most stable. Ive seen Cognition and Axura but i dont know what they do nor do i know if theres better. Sorry to seem like a noob but i mainly got this phone for the learning curve of it so tell me everything haha.
Don't flash Axura first! If you do you'll be disappointed in every other rom you try, lol.
Cognition is a great first flash. It installs the lag fix for you and is very stable (get a non OC version). Axura is my favorite. It is very fast, has some IU tweaks, and they have great support. I still recommend Cognition as a first flash though as everything is done for you during the install. You can pretty much install it, change your wallpaper, sync your contacts and be done with it. (Make sure you sync you contacts with google before you flash)
One thing that I overlooked during my first flash is removing the sim card. Don't forget to do this.
Cognition was my first flash, and I haven't found reason to try something else. Its super fast and stable, and was really easy to flash.
I'm running the beta6 version. These phones are not known for long lasting batteries so I always avoid oc roms.

Cognition was great, but Perception is even better
Before Flashing I would read the post READ BEFORE FLASHING!!!!! under the dev forum - and make sure you understand how to restore before flashing.
And comparing Apple to Android really is trying to compare Apple to Oranges (pun intended).
NOTHING is the same between the two pretty much.
And.. I'd def go with Cognition as a first ROM - as it is a "basic" ROM that is currently using a Captivate kernel.
After you are really comfortable with tweaking your phone - you have your choice of ROMs. Just beware that the i9000 ROMS have their own unique issues - so flasher beware.
A rom, more or less is a package that updates your phones software. most roms are based off of foreign leaks.
When you flash a rom you are not just getting 2.2. In almost all cases you are getting a new kernel, most of which have s lag fix to further improve performance. Your modem will be changed as well, some moderns enable hsupa or basically faster upload and download speeds then what you have with stock.
Roms also have their own theme. Changes in the notification bar, menus, custom animations, boot animations. Etc
Do not flash anything till you read some, I would suggest starting with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
This is a program that allows you to go back to stock, also allows you to recovery from a bad flash.
My vote on which to flash us axura or assonance. Axura may be the best option as it is a very user friendly thread and there are many people there who will help you if you need it.

Woops being as impatient as i am i decided to put Axura but no worries im reflashing to stock then ill put Cognition on lol This is good pratice for me. Is there a way to have like 2 roms installed say if i wanted to boot from one to the other then maybe back to stock or am i thinking about computers too much lol

started out with cognition and Axura once it was available.
Cognition, Axura, and Perception were my first three roms and didn't think i would wonder from DG.
Still think DG does great work but i have just about everything with the exception of Darkys (though i have seen a few new ones pop in in the last couple of days i haven't played with Insanity and the ginger clone)......
once i found and flashed Chronos i haven't looked back or missed any other rom enough to flash something else.
So my recommendation would be chronos.

Titanium Backup, it is free in the app store.
You can backup your apps+data, but it is not recommend to backup system settings. It only takes a few minutes to set the system settings, not worth any possible problems later on if you choose to restore them IMO.
ok i just flashed to Cognition Do i need to do anything i read something about the battery also keep seeing something about Voodoo care to help me?
I would read more before flashing
go to your my files. Should see a file called voodoo. Go inside, should be logs, go inside. If there are files in there voodoo is working. Not a bad idea to do a couple reboots

The last time I installed Cognition voodoo was installed automatically, not sure if they have changed it since then. Did your captivate talk to you during the first boot? They usually have a voice telling you what is going on while installing voodoo.
Ok voodoo is running because there 2 folders and file in there
2010-12-21_20-22-06
2010-12-21_20-12-33-conversion
voodoo_history_log
Those are the files so i guess im good what about the battery? think i should be ok?

I don't remember doing anything to the battery. They say to make sure it is fully charged before flashing. Maybe there are some tweaks you can do, somebody else who uses Cognition more will have to answer that.

[Q] Help...!

Hi all, hope I don't break the rules, but I did something to my Galaxy S, not 100% sure what I did, I used ''odin3''. Bit of newbie at this thing..
Its currently, not running the best, there is quite a bit of lag and I have a real problem with force closes.. If any one can please help me, I would greatly appreciate it...
Thanks
Below, is what I get when I go to ''About Phone'':
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: I9000XXJP2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 root sep-52 #1
Build number: GT-I9000-eng 2.2 MASTER 332 test-keys.332
Well what did you flash?
Not to be harsh but thats almost £300 that you could have just fried. Should really do some research and not just flash willy-nilly.
if you just want a fast phone I advise flashing Darkys ROM 8, the wipe version seeing as you dont really know what you might have done. You will first need a kernal with ClockworkMod recovery. What I just said should be enough for you to get back on your feet. If its not, shout up.
Also... 'Help...!' isnt a great topic name.
EDIT: Better yet, just search. You would have found a guide here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=904245
Thread reported to be moved, not development.
A fresh flash with Odin should be fast. Unless you are using a crappy ROM What did you flash?
Doc's ROM with Hardcore is by far the best for speed if you are looking for recommendations
not sure what I flashed, not really sure what it means..ha was thinking about darkys ROM, like the look of it is it fast?? really sick of lag
Darky's is more buggy due to the extra bloat and his lack of experience in building ROMs. It does look pretty though.
Doc's is great plus you have the awesome flexibility of the online kitchen and tons of different themes.
what should I do if I have installed a crappy ROM? My current set up is crappy anyways, lags so much and force closes are a big problem...how do I see what ROM I have installed?? cheers
Hi, Hmm No1 noticed here with these replies, you said you used Odin3 (oneclickdownloader) Dunno if you used files that came with this..................... Samsung Captivate)(i Think) but last time including many others Bricked my other Galaxy..........Download the Norm Odin 1.1
Did you do a factory reset after flashing the phone? Backup everything first as this will wipe all data that was left from the previous ROM, including contacts, but it will ensure a more stable OS.
You can access the factory reset from recovery.

Of all rom, you go flash MASTER's rom?
And mind you, you are still in JP2! Just recommend a rom of XXJPY. There are plenty out there for you to flash, and it is NOT limited to only just Darkyy or DocRambone's ones. jim panse, nitr8, webstar1, just to name a few....
Suggest you go to the sticky and check out one of the threads there regarding those roms.
Hope this helps.

Flash to a stock rom to get phone working .
Then as been said study the posts and FAQs .
A cooked ROM is not flawless it may be buggy and most are ongoing development .
My preference is for the Magical Rom machine .

Not so much the rom as its been flashed by newbies who never read the posts plus their has been a constant update and change that does not cure bugs .
Forum littered with help posts broken phones all the same rom .
My recommend would be Rom Kitchen http://romkitchen.org/sgs_v1/#
XXJPY wipe jpy modem supercurio kernel
samsung_stock_jpy keyboard
plus whatever apps you want at boot .
easy install via clockwork recovery
once working you can always modify the specs and change .

[Q] Noob Question

Ok so I was looking into methods on how to speed up my captivate and OCLF came up. I did it and it worked great but as I read on , many said to not use it as it was outdated. Is there something similar that uses a faster file system that I can use? Stock 2.2, Rooted
Eh. Maybe...
If you want really fast speed and dont mind flashing, i would flash firefly 3.0, its pretty safe just make sure you have 100% charge when you do it. Then get the OC/UV kernal onix 2.0.5 and boot into recovery and change the file system to ext4...
Any questions? Make another post here i've already done this and can help you out.
I'm kind of hesitant on flashing a rom :/ is there any other way to do it?
Voodoo lagfix doesn't have a fix for froyo yet. Got any love for flashing a kernal?
The extisz Kernal would be for you It has the Voodoo Fixes and everything. You would just need to get the modded 3e recovery and then get CWM and flash the .zip you can download from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988805
You could always go back to JF6 and mod everything on it, and voodoo would work on that
OR you could just do OCLF its going to be a little increase, not much because the filesystem changes to ext2 not ext4, voodoo does ext4 which is faster
Search for any KB1 kernel in the Dev section. If you want you stay as true to stock as possible, use Supercurio's stock KB1 + Voodoo kernel. It's nothing fancy, but it works really well with stock KB1.
Existz's KB1 kernel is also good. Overstock KB1 1.3 is another.
Sorry for the really nooby question but what is a kernel? And if I flashed a rom or a kernel how would I get back to stock if I ever wanted to? Also does my data carry over from rom to rom?

In short, the kernel is what talks to the phone and how fast it functions. If you flashed a ROM or kernel you could get back to stock by using the Odin one-click downloader, and yes your data carries over. You will not loose data unless the modem you are using for a paticular ROM is not very good in your area...which can also be swapped out for a better one.
But you should really read some of the helpful guides about flashing ROMs.. it will answer a lot of your questions, and future questions
Lol, he wasn't talking about internet data, yes your data can be backed up and restored rom to rom with an app called titanium backup.

Its all user preference. While I can say this is the fastest ROM my phone has ever run someone else could say the same about the ROM they are running. Best bet is to try them for yourself and make a decision based on what YOU like.

[Q] Lots of questions before I flash my device.

So, I have a SGS I9000t and am currently very frustrated with the official firmware 2.2.1, since some apps are having terrible issues. Whats worse is that lots of my programs are having constant crashes. My available ram is always getting capped, and i have to uninstall some programs that add functionality that while unnecessary they're nice to have.
Now I have been thinking, what to do? I hear I could flash my device. Doing so would improve its performance, even update to gingerbread. So now i have some questions. I bought this phone and recklessly installed darky's rom. It worked, but without 3g. Other than that, it was pretty amazing. I kept screwing around with it trying to fix 3g and finally bricked it. Took it in for warranty and got a new one.
I dont want to repeat the same mistakes, so this time i want to be extra careful.
Is there a way to do a complete backup? Like every single piece of data in ALL of my phone's memory backup. In case this flash goes wrong, I can just make it work just as it was before?
Is there a way to try roms before flashing? Like just load a rom on top of another rom without altering the current rom.
I would like to evade roms with 2.2.1 firmware, because of the problems mentioned before, so whats the best, non 2.2.1 rom available? Most stable, just plain best.
Since y phone is a i9000t my modem seems to have some problems when flashing, so here are the details of my phone: Model GT-I9000T // FW Ver 2.2.1 // Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 // Build FROYO.UBJP9
Im sorry if this is a lot of info, i just want to do this right. If I flash my phone its for better funcionality, not to get worse. Thanks for your time, if youve read this far. Hopefully you can help me out.
You are asking to be spoon fed information that is out there already!
1st rule of forum is look before you ask, people will help you if you make the effort, but you have to make the effort first. Sorry if this is harsh, so as a pointer, read the main q&a first as a starter

Ahh yes. Ive read a lot actually. Not the basic stuff though. I may have to sit down and read up.
One quick question though, Im sure its not in the FAQ.
I have been dealing with my phone and I see now that many of the problems im having are created by the apps themselves. Will changing my rom actually help greatly? Is 2.3.3 recomemded?
Sent from my GT-I9000T using XDA App
samsung use rfs file system that decays over time, hence people tend to lagfix to cure this, ie. Convert to ext4, this is done through a kernel tweak, you need to start reading and learning, im sorry but I wont do your homework for you!
Sent from gt i9000 insanity 8.5/fugumod
Your problems are not due to 2.2.1 Its the best non GB rom .
Your first step is factory reset .
Second check Kies for an update .
Third step would be to remove these problem apps .
But i just spotted the problem at some stage you installed a darkys rom
Known killer of phones ..
Total removal is flash stock froyo 2.2 rom with pit and repartition checked .
jje
I flashed darkys rom but traded that phone for a new one. So I have a fresh factory 2.2.1 and its working very well. My biggest problem is the bug with programs resetting/not saving settings because the old data stays after uninstalling. Also the rom runs great, what im looking for is better compatibility on perhaps another rom. But you say its as good as it gets so I may be staying with this rom.
Edit; Also, I must add that Kies cannot update my device, because my service provider has my device locked on that firmware. Now what you suggest is flashing to 2.2, then updating to a stock gingerbread rom through Kies? Should'nt I just flash GB and get it over with?

Well, now that I have a couple of people here, I will ask, which if these two roms would be better to install?
Gingerbread 2.3.3 stock Samsung or
Juwe's Smart Edition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672
I like how juwes sounds, but it says something that bothers me, and that is, that it has no bugs, and that is an extremely ignorant claim, since the gingerbread release will always have bugs, no piece of software is perfect, ever. That said, it could be much better than samsungs, so help me out on this one. Thanks.

If you go around looking for a problem, you are most likely to find one. This applies to more than just phone firmwares. Like you said, no system is truly perfect... With that said, I would recommend you try a custom ROM over any stock one... And Juwe's ROM is a pretty trusted one on this board... so sure, go ahead and try it!

I'd say that the voodoo plus app still will be quite useful as it works its magic regardless of kernel. You might find yourself on a standard kernel one day, and then you will still be able to enjoy the improvements of voodoo.

This is a known problem, i had it happen to me several times on froyo firmwares. Solution is to go into settings, applications, then clear data and cache of the problem program, then uninstall it, and go into /data and /dbdata/ and find any data the program has left behind and delete it. Reinstall the app from the market, and the problem should be gone. Havent had it crop up in gingerbread yet.

Few questions, CWM Backup, Custom Stock, Gingerbread...

Hi All,
Slowly getting use to my Note, and totally loving it... Yes, I have joined this party very late... But trust me, this device is PREMIUM compared to my last phone... So enjoying all what it has to offer...
However....
1) Is there a way to check your backups in CWM?? Just did a backup of what has taken me 2x days to finely tune the ROM.. only to find it failed an MD5 check and so wont restore.... - POINTLESS backup
2) Is there any official Samsung Stock Roms (UK pref / International) that are converted/flashable via CWM?? (Dont mind if they are GB, ICS or JB) I will of course be using Philz Kernel if its ICS based....
3) Are there any CLEAN Gingerbread roms available, either based off official Samsung GB or if there was a clean CM7 build...??
Other than that, I think most things are cool with the N7000
Thank you, Lister

I was in CWM and started the backup, watched a bit of TV and came back to find the phone had rebooted, didnt tell me if it was successful or not, just ready to use phone again. Would of been nice if CWM had failed for it stay on that screen and show an error. I have since wiped the phone and now the backup is useless... All the files are there, and all 1.2Gb of data is present in seperate files. Not sure if I can flash them one at a time, although not a great way to restore...

Brilliant, thank you... I had no idea that a DEODEXED rom was what I was after, and is indeed a Stock... I have got XXLSZ, is this the latest best one for this????

I did find that thread already, but a lot of the Roms in there are tweaked and not clean/pure.... I wondered if there was a STOCK (DEODEXED) Gingerbread Rom that can be flashed in CWM, or if there was ever a build of CM7 for the N7000 note... As far I can see there is no CM7, which surprises me as the phone shipped with Gingerbread and the phone itself was considered premium at the time, so would of thought the CM team would of done one...??
But yeah, thank you for your help...
When installing a GB rom (beit Stock or AOSP) do I need to use a custom Kernel then, and if so, who???
Thanks, Lister

1. Yes go to clockwork mod folder on SD card
2. Yes search for stock DEODEXED ROM
3. Yes search. No cm7 ever though. There is a thread that lists all roms.

sorry i misunderstood what you were asking. CWM should NOT automatically reboot, so to me that means you had an unsuccessful backup. It should at the end say something like backup complete... also, regarding a million files in blob folders for CWM, that is not the best format. in backup settings, change the format to "tar" not "dup"

if you want the info, search for the difference b/t deodexed and odexed on google, its interesting..
But yeah LSZ is a little old (almost a year now).
I would go with something XXLT4, LT5, LT6, LT9, or LTA (in order of newest, but there have been no major changes since LT4, so LT4 is fine), if you can find one. be sure to always include /preload in your full wipe procedure when flashing stock roms.
Another option is to just flash a FULL stock ROM, then Flash PhilZ (PC Odin or Mobile Odin) - but beware using odin and not have all the knowledge puts you in the DANGER ZONE of killing your phone with the brick bug

to Install GB via flashable zip, you can flash via Mobile Odin or CWM - or if the thread has special install instructions, follow those
this search string gets a few results

As for CM7, they just never did it... CM9 was first.
Also, I know you're looking for stock stuff right now, but CM10.2 is a MAJOR upgrade from CM7. The official CM10.2 nightlies are pretty amazing.
But thats all opinion, the stock has a lot of cool features and benefits... just not for me (i used to love it, but its too bloated and slow)
