Hi guys.
I have my captivate running froyo. that's about all I know, though. I was hoping someone could tell me what rom I am running or distro I am running, because I am clueless. I have heard cognition is good, and if I can update to it without losing all my settings I will (assuming I dont have it now. I could, like i said, clueless.). Here is what my phone says in the about phone section:
Firmware version: 2.2
Model number SAMGSUNG-SGH-I897
Baseband version: I897UCJI6
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 jetaek.lee(at)sep-11 #1 (sorry for wording it this way, i could not post the topic with the at symbol because it thought it was an outside link)
Build Number: FROYO.UCJI6
ok, that's everything I think. Now, if someone can help me root this version, that's just dandy. If not, I would be willing to update to one that has a viable root availible for it already. I had eclair rooted before updating to froyo, and I miss my wifi tethering and backups.
Thank you in advance to anyone who offers help, I greatly appreciate it.
Hey I'm sorry I can't really help you, but I'm running the eclair rooted and I've been trying to get wifi tethering working but it just force closes everytime. If you could let me know how you were able to do it or point me in the right direction I'd be forever grateful.

You are on the original leak of froyo. I am not sure how to root it. If I were you I would back up all my apps using titanium backup, flash stock with odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Then look at flashing a 2.2 rom that us pre rooted
You can not flash a rom from the leaked version you are on

no offense taken, my reason for making a new thread was because I did not what version I was using, and therefore could not sort out what information was applicable. But, either way, thanks!
With a triumphant thrusting of both fists in to the air, losing my balance in my chair and falling to the ground upon seeing the little "superuser permissions" app after reboot, you have my eternal gratitude. Thank you so much!
Edit: oh crap... now my menu, home, back and search buttons do not work! any idea what I can do to fix this?
Not a problem. I am happy it worked out
edit. Try reboot. If that don't work an odin flash will do it but you will lose apps and settings

dernit. It did not work. well, at least i got it rooted, it's a good start. maybe i can figure it out
What did you do. it will suck but if you take your time you can get through. I would work toward getting titanium downloaded. You nasty have to reboot a couple of times.
I would get off of ever leaked froyo either way, if you are ever going to move to something else you will have to flash stock

im thinking I'm just going to go back to eclair, and root. I could do everything i wanted to on that, except for having flashplayer. so yeah. I guess, since all my contacts are synced with my gmail account, it's no big deal. i can re-do my home page and reinstall my apps thanks to appbrain. I mean, after all, it's just a phone.
That is correct. It is just a phone. If you are at all unfamiliar with odin our ned help getting back to 2.1 on me

before I start counting my chickens, let me wait for them to hatch. I've been following the directions for flashing back to 2.1, so i'll let you know how it goes.
Edit: It worked, now I just have to set up everything and re-install my apps. Thank you for your help, I'm just taking the "patience is a virtue" approach from now on haha. only thing I will really miss is the little arrow thing that makes it easier to pick a spot in a body of text. oh well
There is a basic no frills froyo rom in the developement section. I believe its ji6 optimized or something like that. It comes with 2e recovery and root access built in. Sorry I just log off my computer otherwise I would post you links. But backup with tibu. And take a look at that rom in the developement section. You will need rom manager from the market. But after downloading ji6 optimized, copy to your internal sd card. Then open rom manager and select install rom from zip. Select the froyo rom and follow instructions. You will then have a rooted froyo minus att bloat with flash.
I would give more detail but I have thumb cramps now lol. But tomorrow I can help if u need it.
I get this install complete message from my update. Zip file but when my phone boots up I don't get the super user message and I install the screenshot app. For root phones only and it tells me not rooted. Any ideas why I'm not rooted yet?

make sure you have usb debugging enabled.
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I followed the instructions correctly. It finds the zip and starts installing then reboots and nothing changed. I'm currently at work. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? So when I get home I can jump right into rooting my phone

Did I say to use it for lagfix?....no but even someone who can't read well can use it to root....literally rooting for dummies
You were having trouble so I tried pointing you I'm the direction for easiest root method...heck you don't even have to know how to follow directions to use it
It's funny you talk down on somebody without even doing your research. If you did you would know that the app doesn't root your phone anymore. Thanks for the help tho I do appreciate it

I have saved on my computer Ryan's z4root.apk from 2-3 weeks ago, that will still Root won't it if I ever need on Stock 2.1.1?
I'd suppose it would - he just had to take out the root feature for some reason. The application wasn't defective.
Hello, I have installed a ron on my cappy and that rom didn't have galaxy s settings.. so I tried taking that app from another rom and putting it in system/apps and changed the permission to be the same as all the other apps permissions.. I rebooted after that and when I went to open the apo it keeps forcing close... I've tried clearing the data but still forcing close.. any help?

for AriesParts.apk I have the permissions:
Owner: Read Write
Group: Read
Others: Read
Are yours the same? Are you able to tap it to install through a root browser? I have that option using root explorer...
Also which ROM and kernel? We need more info if we are going to help you.

I went ahead and duplicated your setup and tried to install AriesParts.apk
I got the same result, no matter which way I installed it...
I'm sorry I couldn't be more help, possibly beock or someone else will know why or how it won't install/how to install...
A post in the ROM's thread probably wouldn't hurt either, since it came bundled with devil kernal

May be some library is missing or have wrong version. Ask ROM developer to include it - he will figure it out.
I have recently Restored my N1 from an ICS ROM and am back on Gingerbread 2.3.6.
I am wanting to remove some system apps but I cannot for the life of me find out how to root the N1.
Much googling has lead me to dead ends and dead links and I feel I am missing something really obvious that everyone else but me knows.
The guides I have found on rooting all appear to involve custom ROMs which I don't want at the moment.
The bootloader is still unlocked and I know at some point in the past I did have the device rooted on gingerbread but I can't remember how?
try www.unlockroot.com

Yep, that worked
Thanks.
If I may be so bold... what would be the best app to use to actually remove the system apps?
I have used one in the past but found that when I removed anything it would shut off the nexus completely and not actually remove anything.
use titanium backup. it would be safe to hv a backup via a custom recovery, before removing system apps...

I never been able to get it to work. Doesn't matter what kernel I used or what rom. I just can't get it to work. And I did put everything in kernel folder and I see them too but when I select them, there are no sound difference. So, if any of you guys got it to work. Please let know me. I tried asking for help from the official page but they seem to busy. Anyway, thanks.
