ummm i know this is not related to what xda doess but i want to know if there are things like ROMS for windows 7 PCs? i wannt to like customize my computerr. ty
Do you mean like themes and such? Theres really no such thing as a "ROM" for PC unless you're talking about operating systems (which there are plenty of from Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, OSX, Windows, google's new netbook OS).
I mean you can get streamlined versions of windows but they are normally pirated unless you can make your own.
But the only way of customizing your computer is to get different themes and/or to build your own computer (which is what I do).
so like the max i can do is change my themes? because thats kinda boring. im not a proffesianal anything with computers but i know some things but i doubt i can build anything like that.

You can customize your desktop with Rainmeter. There's a ton of skins for it at deviantart.

Yea programs like that work too. I haven't used rainmeter but I have used Windows Blinds and that works pretty well.
Install some form of linux.
yeah, you can basically do anything you want with linux. You can even make your own os based on linux
feeling like i got a week worth of noob-overdose from this thread alone
I have 7 themed to all hell, but there's no alternative kernel to the NT kernel. With Os X, there's Darwin, or Legacy.

I am constantly reading posts about android here and i cant understand why everybody is so excited about it. Ok, its linux, but so what. Its open-source, but so what. How many of users that are so desiring it has ever change one line of code in any software? 0.0001%? How many times have you edit some config file as there was no GUI to set it up from there? Do you actually know what the file is? And how to edit it without Word ? So what is SO cool about it? What is this great thing where the touch hd would be so great with it? I thought it was bragging but you can brag with iPhone, i dont think Linux will ever catch its look AND stability (actually imho linux is one huge pile of bugs that works together by pure coincidence). The amount of software that could be used on a phone is very inferior to Windows Mobile and iPhone, and shell is quite useless as on screen keyboard typing can be only meant as a joke (i actually had to buy myself a folding keyboard)... You like it becoase it is google? Some privacy concerned people would raise eyebrow... You dont like the manilla? What about this: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell/ ?
So what is so cool about android??
(running ssh to dragonfly bsd host and i really dont understand what linux on phone could be good for)
Well, basically, Linux and Linux-based systems allow you to polish those bugs. Which is one of the reasons Linux is as bug-free as you can get right now.
And most computer users don't make their own GNU/Linux distributions either, they download their favorite. I don't see why that wouldn't work in a PDA environment.

I don't agree with you. Android is a Rom-development for the Blackstone, so I agree his placement for this thread.
Back on-topic, I disagree with the fact of android being a spoiler to our Blackstone. Android is an open-source OS for Mobile Phones and I really would like a Android Rom for the Blackstone. Creating my own apps and stuff. I hope it will be developed some day

Personally I want it because its smother than winmo, even the old halfworking port feels really smoth and more robust flipping through menues etc. It has that stable feeling Iphone-OS has.
That beeing said, i love where the new manila and Winmo is heading. If they just speed it up and get rid of the flickering and ****ty looking graphics when opening applications it would be more attractive.
my dad recently bought the htc magic and i can understand whats the hype with android.
its a very nice system for a phone.
what i dont understand is that if you want it, why not buy an android phone? my next phone will probably by android, but for now i'm happy with WM. and i can guarantee you that never will android on a device like blackstone be as good as windows mobile. without the help of the manufacturer it is not possible to get a stable and fully working android port. waste of time. go get a hero.

Would it be an easier experience for me to use linux or windows to create themes and whatnot for android. I want to spend some free time contributing to the community more than I have been.
no difference
In my experience surprisingly windows. But with a little effort i could change that
i hate using gimp, im so used to photoshop (could be fixed), and for some reason Im having a hell of a time signing apks and zips in linux. the easy tool somebody made in these forums doesnt work at all for me on my ubuntu setup, but ran fine on windows

i prefer windows bc im used to it. gimp actually works great in windows as well and is free. i like it alot. i use both but gimp is quick and easy and takes up less space. i also agree that signing in windows is quite easy...drag and drop some files....install latest java jdk and you're good to go. however, i will not put down the other OS. in reality...its just practice. the more you get a feel for something, the better you understand and grow to like using it or vice versa...hate it .
I would say Windows with virtual machine running linux, the linux is mainly for doing crazy new things as you can easily get the source code and build your own android in linux and then workout how to make those modifications to existing roms later in windows box, this is what I did when I was investigating how to change the color of the line that is drawn between unlock pattern icons

Since I first knew that Captivates were hackable, I always wondered if there was any way to put WP7 on my phone. It isn't because I would have rather had a WP7, but it is simply because I want the option to. I find it hard to believe that none of you haven't imagine WP7 on your captivates. Recently trax26 made a theme of WP7 that looks simply amazing, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910918) but, his barely sufficient tranlation makes it even harder for a small time programmer like myself to install it. The screenshots look amazing, but there is no way I can do that.
My question is: Does anybody else know of a simpler WP7 theme to install? A CWM theme would be ideal, but some minor hacking would be okay with me.
And if not, I would just like to put that out there as a suggestion for anybody whose up to it. I'm sure there are tons of people (including myself) who would beta it as much as possible, just so as long the feel is right.
Thanks in advance, Richard.
Look at metro ui in the market. It is a decent wp7 launcher. Some bugs but overall much better then trying the theme.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.

Thanks a bunch and just wan to let you know you have a typo in your signature
EDIT: Although that is a good emulator, take a look at the link that i posted. That's what im looking for, full blow WP7 with the right symbols and everything (more or less). But thanks anyways.
Yea, it would be nice to have WP7 running on Cappy. After watching HD2 running WP7 on YouTube makes me eager to have it. But idk how. Lol.

Yeah I know about my sig .
As for getting real wp7 it just wont happen. These themes and that II are probably the closest we will get. I figure the metro II is much easier than trying to do the process of the theme.

WP7? So you can deal with stuff like this? http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/237934.asp?from=blog_last3

I'm not saying I want WP7 as my only operating system, because Android is far superior in almost everything, but I simply want it to be able to have the choice of having WP7. I would like to have the speed and hackability of Android, but have the simplicity of WP7. I have to say the tiles are probably the only thing that will keep WP7 going, because honestly, I think they are pretty cool. Metro is a decent simulator that gets the jist, of WP7 but it's actually too simple. The thing about WP7 is that it has cool simplicity by using colored and animated tiles.
And as for the quote "It will be a long time before WP7 comes to android" every rom has to start somewhere.
You'd need someone who could reverse engineer WP7 - then figure out how to use existing drivers or write new ones before WP7 could be installed on our Android phones.
There is no "Open Source" for Windows... ever.
Drivers would probably have to all be re-written or some type of hack so WP7 could work with existing drivers.
So... unless you know someone with a great amount of time - possibly can hack M$ and get the source code we probably won't be see this type of port soon.
well i use LG optimus 7 before i change to captivate just use it 1 month
then sell. What can i said... it actually very nice and really fast phone
and its wp7 is really pretty but it 2 simple and lack of app support for now.
cause its still new maybe another 1 or 2 years i will get it again.
Maybe i'm just not understanding, but im not asking for the windows sole operating system, im just asking for a themed windows 7 rom, or even better, a combination of the home screen on WP7 and the rest of it being android. Maybe thats too much to ask, but it doesnt seem like it.

Maybe I didn't read your source post fully, but isn't that theme built for galaxy s phones, and only require launcherpro?
Granted I only glanced the post, but it didn't look too complex. If you can flash a ROM, that theme shouldn't be a big deal.

Android Phone 7 Theme
Google is your friend!
With all those widgets I wouldn't expect the battery to last half a day.
I read the entire post, and you need launcherpro plus to resize the widgets, which I dont have, and have no money to buy. Also, it's not a theme that you can flash, you need to do some extracting and coding via terminal. It may not be possible to make a complete WP7 theme that's flashable with Clockwork recovery, but I've seen many a theme that looks completely original. I don't know much about ROM writing (if i did i would have the WP7 theme on my phone and this post would be gone), but it seems like with all the amazing devoted themers on XDA, someone besides the before mentioned person, could create a wonderful flashable theme that does not require any money/hacking.

Ok honestly, I don't want to try and screw with my phone, because I'm happy the way it is right now. I would really like to get a WP7 theme, but I think I'm going to wait until someone makes a SIMPLE theme, that you can flash and be done with HINT HINT HINT HINT.

LoL yea i agree.. we just want wat we cant have.. but if we'd be stuck with it we'd be trying to get rid of it
Ive had a captivate since july and i love the phone even with numerous software problems right out of the box. I recently picked up unlocked HTC Surround and its awesome. That one comes with snapdragon processor 1 gig, same one in the HTC Evo 4g, and 512 mb ram and using the WP7 Os it is very fast right out of the box. It totally lacks customization unlike android os and no where the amount of apps and games android has, but the ones it does have are way better versions then the android ones, for example facebook and craiglist. And the xbox live game THE HARVEST is amazing. I would encourage anyone to try one out, very well done OS compared to the previous windows mobile os. I dont think ill sell my captivate because i love having option to choose from either android or Windows Phone 7. I just hope it catches on so it will soon have as many apps and games as Android.
Windows Phone 7 is a polished OS, but it won't even come close to Android or iOS for a VERY long time. And like I said early, It's not like I want WP7 instead of Android, but It's the reason that i CAN'T have WP7 that makes me want it. If anyone has any WP7 friends, give them the idea!
Have you looked into "Launcher7" ? Search it on the market.
If you just want a home theme that looks like WP7 this seems to be the easiest one going.
I think asking someone to port the whole WP7 OS over to a Cappy is probably not going to happen though.
Hey everyone,
So I want to start using Linux, I've used it a few times in the past (Live CD's, Asus EEE Machines etc) But never as a standalone OS. I have an old laptop that isn't a bad spec that I want to run it on but I don't know which distro to go with.
I'm going to be using it as a everyday machine (web browsing etc) Though the option to do more complicated things on it (build from the CM Github etc) would be nice.
I also don't want a baby fed/watered down version, I want to learn Linux & how it works so I can become a better PC Technician.
So my question is, Which version would you recommend?
Thanks in advance
Ubuntu 10.10 is a Solid Distro ... 11.04 is the current, however no more GNOME interface..
Maverick and Natty both have really solid support and community backing ..
So Check out Ubuntu!
Linux mint is a nice off spin of ubuntu, still has gnome, and any other flavor desktop you might want. I perfect kde myself. I find it easier on the eyes and qt is easy to customize.

It's really going to be a preference thing.. 11.04 uses 'Unity' as the Default Environment.
I did not like it . but that's just me.
10.10 still has loads of support. so you could def try it out and 'upgrade' to 11.04 should you want teh newest!
Don't go unity. Not just yet. Maybe after it gets a bit better. a bit more stable perhaps.
But yes I believe ubuntu for starters is the best mostly for its huge community. You'll find plenty of answers.
Go for 10.10 or 10.04 lts. Eventually if you get in to it you can move to more hardcore distros like fedora.

and then even more hardcore ... Arch , Gentoo ... then LFS .. haha . learn your terminal commands
You could also check out openSuSE it's a linux Novell project.
Another decent distro though not one of my favorites is Fedora Core

Tbh, This is kinda the path I wanna take, I don't wanna be a pro-pro but would like to be somewhat good.
Basicly I'm a qualified PC Tech & while I can help anyone out on a windows & mac environment I'll still clueless on Linux so I wanna learn as much as possible to be the best I can be.
Do you think starting at the deep end is a good idea or should I take it slowly?

So, here's the lowdown...
I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal right now. I find Unity delightful and decently customizable. But if you don't like Unity, you can choose Ubuntu Classic from the login screen, which is GNOME(not sure which). Another distro I like is Fedora (currently 15) which comes with GNOME 3. If you want a completely bare-bones but amazingly customizable distro go with Arch. It may be confusing at first, but I hear you can do anything with it. Another popular distro is Gentoo, where you compile almost everything from source. One distro that I have used is Sabayon, which is a spinoff of Gentoo. OpenSUSE is pretty solid, although I haven't used it for that long. I tried Mandriva for a while and didn't really like it.
I would say though, that if you want to become better at linux try Fedora. It's pretty much Ubuntu but for non-noobs. If you become comfortable with that, try out Arch or Gentoo. But if you want to do development, like for android, go with Ubuntu as it comes with easily installable software and a large community.
So there ya go, that's my opinion on this.
I've read alot about open suse being used alot on laptops in europe. They use it on the pc's at work and needed a way to easily communicate their latops with the work pc's. So over the past few yrs, open suse has really worked to make it laptop compatible.

To answer your first question there is no windows phone 8 port nor any windows phone 8 themed roms out there for the captivate. First and foremost a port of windows phone 8 would be illegal although I'm sure it's possible. However after a quick google search I found a post about Launcher8 that supposedly gives you live tiles and completely mimics the looks of windows phone 8. I'm sure there are also other launchers and themes out there that would give you the look you're going for.
As for Ubuntu mobile I've heard that it is being worked on for the captivate but can't begin to confirm that and it's far from ready for full release based on what I've seen.
