Hi guys I'm new to the Samsung captivate using and not familiar with computer. Anyone could help me out? I just use the 1click program to root my phone and I got a ninja icon superuser. How do I to be sure if my phone is rooted? Cause I was trying to install 3rd party applications. Could anyone show step by step to resolve my problem will be very appreciated . Thank you all.

Anyways, apart from this, like adam said, install an app like titanium backup from market to check for root. Install busy box, if not already installed.

rooting does not automatically enable sideloading. you will need to do that yourself, i recommend superoneclick

It shouldn't take more than a minute after u mount the device. Try reconnecting the phone, and/or rebooting both computer and phone. That should solve.

Hi,
Complete noob here!!
So I had rooted 2.1 stock and update to Froyo leak first one it came out I believe (System Version 2.3.9.MB810), and lost root.
I would like to upgrade to the new 2.3.13 Froyo, but I'm not sure if I could just follow the instructions on the threads because they are about going from 2.1 rooted to new Froyo.
Is there a difference in the installation? Can I recover root? Do I loose everything I have? I have Titanium root but since I lost root it hasn't been backing up I believe
I been looking at both of these threads lately, sound like the instructions might work (again complete noob , so not sure)
thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764304
thread: androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/174152-brand-new-froyo-2-3-13-a.html
Thanks for your help in advance.
Update
I used the instructions on the thread on here and ran into an error when running the update zip
Says Error: Status 2
What can I do?
Neither will work without root... follow D2 root instructions.
So follow the instructions on this thread
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7838000&postcount=1
And then just follow the instructions as they are on the new froyo threads
Thanks!!!
Yes, that should work. Wait for someone else to confirm this though, unless you are adventurous.
rage-against-the-cage is a 2.2 exploit, the way I understand. It isn't specific to the D2, but as I said, wait on someone to confirm. I don't know a whole lot about this. More of a lurker than a do-er.
I saw it a while ago and thought about doing it, I was waiting for another 1-click-root type of thing, so I couldn't mess up. I'll wait and see if someone confirms it then.
I used this method to regain root after the 2.3.13 update and it worked. If you know how to use adb its pretty easy.

Any ideas?
Try and find a guide somewhere? I know there are guides to setting up the sdk.
None of my computers (Mac/Windows 7) would recognize my Droid on PC mode. What can I do??

Try turning usb debugging off (System settings > Applications > Development).
And then connect in PC mode again and see if the phone installs itself.
Try the other modes, mine work in mass storage.

Glad that helped!
I first want to thank everyone at UnrEVOked for what they've done. I'm posting this because the UnrEVOked post doesn't really give any instructions. Its an easy enough root, but I know I've been there before and even the simplest things can be tough if things aren't laid out. So here's a step by step tutorial.
Due to some bugs, Unrevoked 3.2 was taken down shortly after being released, but the updated version is now LIVE! So obviously we're going to bring you a video tutorial on how to do it! Thanks to the guys at Unrevoked for giving us this simple solution to rooting the Droid Incredible.
LINK TO VIDEO WALKTHROUGH FOR HOW TO ROOT THE DROID INCREDIBLE
◄●REQUIRED DOWNLOADS●►
EVERYONE: Unrevoked3. Download the version for your OS.
WINDOWS USERS: unrEVOked modified USB driver
◄●How to Install HBOOT Drivers (Windows Users ONLY)●►
If you're using Windows, you're going to have to install the HBOOT drivers first. You can follow this video tutorial:
How to Install HBOOT Drivers
and follow along with these written instructions provided by the Unrevoked team:
Download the unrEVOked modified USB driver and expand it somewhere you will remember.
Turn off your phone, then boot it into the HBOOT menu by holding power and volume down.
On your phone, you will have to select HBOOT USB at that menu by pressing volume down four times, then power. Wait until the screen flashes through an “SD Checking” message before pressing buttons; otherwise, the phone will ignore keypresses.
Connect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
Open Device Manager.
Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device.
Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software:
Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder on on your computer, click ok, then click next.
You should get a status bar indicating that the driver is installing. If you get any warnings, just click Ok.
Your driver should install.
Click Close and make sure Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone.
◄●Instructions●►
Make sure you downloaded Unrevoked3 for your OS.
If you're on Windows, make sure you "uninstall HTC Sync or any other program that might talk to the phone over USB (doubletwist, etc). They will cause problems" (Unrevoked.com).
Plug your phone into your computer with USB.
Drag down from the notification bar on your phone and select "Charge Only" and "Remember this"
Make sure your phone has USB Debugging turned on by going to Menu>>Settings>>Applications>>Development and checking USB debugging.
Run the Reflash application that you downloaded.
Unrevoked will run its processes. Follow the few instructions it gives and thats it!
You're now rooted!
PS - Others have asked elsewhere if it flashes a custom recovery. Yes, it flashes Clockwork
Be sure to wait for S-OFF to install before unplugging phone!

Thanks for reporting that
thanks, one question, maybe more later.
after this is done, then what. do i really need to do anything else. is this where the fun begins, like i really only want to remove the bloatware. but if i want, can i just leave it rooted and do nothing with it. i am a total noobie and even this "one click" thing has me scared and confused. thanks for the post.
Once you're done, you can remove bloatware. And yes, if you so choose, you can do nothing at all

Right, ok then. You see so many idiotic questions posted on various forums, it's hard to discern if you're looking at another of those.

Guys, I have the same problem. I used z4root to root my UK Tab. It took about 5 minutes to do the job the first time. Everything worked fine I guess. It installed Superuser and I managed to run the application that needed rooting.
The problem is when I try to unroot, I don't have the "unroot" button on the screen. I am on XXJK5 baseband.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thx!

I have 1.3.0 which roots and un-roots fine on XXJK5
Terminal:
su
mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/stl9 /system
rm /system/bin/busybox (Not very useful without root, but some functionality still handy, so up to you)
rm /system/bin/su
exit
Uninstall the Superuser app.
Reboot.
Can't imagine why you'd want to do this unless you're taking it back to the shop.

Since when have Samsung issued an update OTA? Everything update they've released has been via SamFirmware for us to update themselves.
But as a general answer, custom roms won't get the popup saying an update is available. But if you do get one, don't do it.

Using SuperOneClick v1.7 on my Tab. Rooted it in USB mode. Also able to unRoot easily in USB mode. Very simple and without any issue.
I will try myself to unroot it simply because a game (Jewels HD for Galaxy Tab) does not work on rooted devices. It provides a message when trying to open it...
And honestly, for an average user, rooting the device doesn't add much in my opinion (perhaps it is just that I didn't see the benefits yet, except for having Titanium to delete everything or extended backup options).

I know these are old posts but since somebody decided to bump this topic anyway I would just like to say to the OP if he hasnt killed himself by licking a live wire.. You sir are a prize ahole/n00b.
Even a logical person reading your initial post would have assumed you was a idiot who didnt even try to unroot with z4root. Nowhere did you mention you had tried, infact teh way you said it sounded like you didnt even know that you could unroot with z4root.
This is why "n00bs" is a bad name, not because its somebody trying to learn but because of ahole's who are lazy in the way they ask and then get pissed because somebody replies in a non-expected way.

Okay before I get all the "Learn to google" or "Use the search function" let me just go ahead and say, I've searched all over the place before posting.
Okay I recently flashed my phone back to stock to get rid of a few problems. I tried to root with one click root and it failed when I tried to test it with sending the su command so not only was it not rooted it wouldn't allow me to use third party downloads So I am now trying to flash it back to stock again. Now Odin won't recognize my phone at all when its in download mode. I've tried reinstalling drivers and everything and it's like when I use Odin once it won't work again without reinstalling the drivers again.
It's hard to explain my exact problem but basically it's like the drivers keep resetting themselves or something where Odin won't detect my phone. And secondly my one click root no longer seems to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is getting very frustrating.
Edit: Now I am getting the "More than one device detected" error on the super one click.

You should try superoneclick (SuperUser) - It has never failed me
Also, you do not need to be rooted if you're on stock 2.1 Eclair - You can simply change the name of the ROM to update.zip, go into recovery and reinstal package.
As for Odin, I don't know what to suggest other than you could try using the non-one click one.

a) who said one click root will enable 3rd party apps
edit, you do want super one click root as stated above if you dont have that get it. the thread is by clshortfuse and usese the rage against the cage meathod, works on every phone
b) you need busy box before comands work, it is in the market
c)i dont know what your odin problem is, does the box turn yellow when you plug in the phone with in download mode? is this odin one click? odin one click+3button fix? odin files without bootloaders plus full odin? what version of odin? what series number is the phone under the battery? 1006?1007?ect...
Well the problem with moving the update.zip file manually is that my computer will no longer detect my phone regardless what mode my phone is in. And I was using superoneclick
Edit:
A) The Super one click root allows the option to enable non market apps, which has previously worked in the past but doesn't any more.
B) Can't get busybox without rooting

Then it's most likely your computer and not your phone.
Try another usb port, cable;
unistall and reinstall the drivers;
restart your computer.
If none of these work, try on another computer.
After that, it could be the usb port on your phone.
Could I get a link or quick guide on how to uninstall and reinstall drivers.

Umm - Try a different Odin.. Odin3 one click worked for me before.
You can try a non-one click Odin as well, sometimes it works when the other doesn't.
You don't have to connect to your computer either to flash a rom. download a rom with your phone ... Rename THAT update.zip on the phone ... Boot into recovery reinstall packages ... Its probably your computer like was said not the phone.
I reinstalled drivers, still not working. Any ideas?
Ummm when was the last time you made a restore point on your pc? Restoring from a few days prior worked for me when nothing else would, although it was just the dl mode driver that broke in my case ... You can't get it recognized at all ... But still woth a shot.

the latest version of AIO (3.0) uses heimdall instead of odin. i would recommend it
Okay downloaded the AIO tool box, looks pretty solid from what I can tell, will update to see if this fixes my issues.
Well I rooted with the toolbox and I when I try to run root required apps it says that my phone is not rooted or I haven't accepted superuser permissions. I do not receive a notification to accept these permissions however it does appear superuser is installed.
On the bright side I got all my drivers set up correctly.
