Did you restart the computer after uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them?

No, once you install the Samsung Captivate drivers, if the computer detects an 'i9000' phone (or an i9000 ROM on Captivate), it will automatically install the drivers. Try right clicking Computer in the start menu and clicking Manage, or something along those lines (not on my Windows partition right now...). Then in the left pane, select Manage Devices or something about Devices. Then try and look for the phone in that list (look hard, it would be under mobile devices or something like that). Right click on anything associated with the phone and click Uninstall or Remove or something along those lines. Again, sorry I'm being so vague, I'm not on my Windows partition right now.
Oh, and while you're doing this, make sure your phone is not plugged in.
After you finish that stuff, reboot. Then plug your phone it and see if it automatically detects the correct drivers. If not, leave it plugged in and install the stock Samsung Captivate drivers (can be found somewhere in the development forums).
allrighty ill give that a try (also im pretty tech savy i got my A+ cert and have flashed a few psp's in my day so throw what ya got at me)

Great to know! So then you shouldn't have a problem following my vague/horrible instructions xD
Anyway, if that doesn't work, you can try booting in safe mode and following the same steps (though I doubt that would make a difference)...
But I do remember this happened to me once. I was also running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, but it was on my Desktop computer which I was only using temporarily because my laptop had crashed, so I didn't have much of a desire to fix it so I never did
Oh and I'm taking A+ next year... they don't allow students to take it freshman year ): (lol I feel young...)
i dunno, i think i did it but when i plug in my phone i still get this

Okay, right click on the one with an exclamation next to it and click 'Update Driver Software'. Assuming you didn't delete the folder that had the Samsung drivers in it, choose "Browse computer for driver software", click on "Browse...", and select the folder that you unzipped the drivers to. Make sure to keep the Subfolders option checked, too. Click next and let it do its thing. Restart your computer and see if it works then. And make sure your phone isn't plugged in during this too.
nah, when i browse the folder of usb drivers it says "the driver is already the best used driver" so that seems to not work
would flashing to a different rom maybe serve better?

Hmm...
Then you can try doing the same in Safe Mode, which will keep Windows from trying to re-install the driver (which is what I think happened). Also, make sure you're using these drivers from this guide.
Oh, also, don't miss the "Disk Drives" drop-down, too. It also has drivers for the GT-i9000, at least it does for me.
hmm nah i thing something is wrong with the rom, no gt9000 disk drive, still doesnt work after the drives, i think i just may get an sd reader, thanks for trying tho
edit: oh wait thats an internal sd, hmm, i think im gonna try another rom i guess unless anyone has any other ideas?

Ok here it goes...
Ive come to the conclusion by having no luck with my previous thread which was asking how to fix " the usb is not recognized" after trying everything known to man and reading every thread that this is kind of a grey area. If your problem isnt obvious ie: debugging off or new usb cord etc... then ur sol ? I say this because the people who know their stuff are extremely detailed and make insanely great write-ups.
FTW can anyone explain or knows how to do this:
Fix the phone so that I can have full usb function ie: when i plug it in the comp wants to install drivers and the phone gives me the option to mount?
If not can someone tell me what choices I have???
To give some info my phone started this after (dont judge why i did this like this lol) installed freshhh 2.0b then the new radio then the new....heroc recov(from reading all day and night im guessing its the recovery)
also the phone will boot in heroc recov and will boot in fastboot but NO ADB sigh. and to take the cake me being frusturated seemed to break the cardinal rule no nandroid backup sigh sigh. basically i just want the usb back in action and fresh 2.0 w/radio. im sorry about the long post but im losin my mind over this. Thanks in advance guys as always every bit counts.
Go into your android dev kit and make sure you have the most current version of the ADB drivers. Are they updated? If so, make sure those are the ones you are using.
I've had similar issues before and I know it's wicked frustrating. Just keep toying with it... sure you'll get it eventually.

this happened to me with my brother's moment. I can't remember if usb debugging had to be on or off but it that is what I messed with to get it to work. Try throttling it on and off... Good luck

yes i have and no it doesnt...
Re-install HTC Sync.. It updates the drivers...
there's some driver incompatibility if you've ever used another device with adb... you have to find the original device, put in dev mode, and overwrite drivers with that of the hero, then plug hero in and try agian.... if that is in fact your problem....
otherwise, htc sync should fix ya

what do you do?
PDAnet for android has some driverS you could try as well...
http://www.junefabrics.com
Yes PDAnet but I also had success with installing HTC Sync for the Eris.
I am using Win7 64bit.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/droid-eris-verizon/downloads/
As per crunchybutternut's suggestion in a different thread, I followed the instructions in this link: hxxp://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/ (sorry, I can't post links yet)
Basically, I downloaded USBDeview and ran it in administrator mode to delete all HTC and Android related drivers (while phone is plugged in).
I then unplugged and plugged the phone back in and it reinstalled everything fine except for the ADB driver, so I told it to let me manually choose a driver from a list, selected Have Disk and pointed it to C:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver
After that, I just set the phone to HTC Sync mode when plugging it in and it worked fine.

right now im doing alot of sql for companies who want full dbms. But pretty much know a little bit of it all. this is really fun to play with just a lil rough around the edges. i always liked linux tho!
And back to the problem i like the eris suggestion and I did all the rest. My only thought is this why after heroc attempt***???what does heroc do at the core behind being a boot prog what could it mess up or change if not flashed correctly? Thanks guys for the love
First, make sure your phone is NOT connected and open a command prompt. Then type the following command:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
You won't get any sort of output, it just goes to the next line. Then type in devmgmt.msc to open the device manager. Got to VIEW and select "Show Hidden Devices".
Now, expand the ADB Interface section, right click on each device individually, and uninstall. When prompted to delete the driver choose YES!
Go to the HTC Website to download and install the newest version of HTCsync.
http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=3&dl_id=852
Once installed it would probably be a good idea to reboot your computer before you connect your HTC Hero. Once the Hero is connected make sure you pull down your notification bar and select HTC Sync or it won't connect for ADB access.
Hope this helps!
I've had this problem before but it was usually after I rooted my hero and had messed around. I've bricked two of them with the RUU trying to fix it. Don't really know why the phones bricked still. Usually I just kept plugging the phone on over and over until it recognized it.
Note: I have searched the forums/google/youtube and done just about everything suggested.
I downloaded the SDK thinking my computer would notice the drivers ... it doesn't
I've installed, uninstalled, rebooted, power cycled, disonnected, reconnected, deleted, added etc... And Windows still does not recognize my Hero.
I don't know what to do now, as I thought I was going to just simply root and keep it moving, but I can't even get transfer contacts yet. Anybody have suggestions? Tips? Anything? I'm desperate here
Running: Vista x64
Make sure you download and install HTC Sync here and turn on USB Debugging on your phone by pressing menu, settings, applications, development, and check USB debugging. Also turn on unknown sources in the same menu in applications.

Ok, try this link and download the htc drivers for the hero. When its looking for the drivers, browse for the location yourself and point it to the drivers that you downloaded (once you extracted it)

Sigh, tried this too. Windows just keeps telling me it cant find the driver - even when I direct it to the folder I've never had this happen with any other drivers I've installed
try removing the device in device manager and remove SDK and then go back through the steps of installing htc sync plug in your phone then run SDK

I'd be happy to even get THAT far. My computer wont install drivers, my phone doesn't detect that its connected via usb, so I'm unable to mount. So there's no chance of even using SYNC yet lol. I guess I should be happy I didn't rush out to get that EVO just yet, cuz I'd kill over if I were having this problem with that phone. With the Hero, it's annoying cuz I can't transfer music or root yet.

I had a similar problem. First does you phone charge from the USB port? if not find a different USB cable. I have heard thicker is better but all the ones I have tried have charged it.
If it does charge but you can get Windows to recognize it as ADB then install PDAnet on your computer. You can find it with a google search. I got really frusturaded getting the drivers to work too, but PDAnet worked on the first try.

I use the stock USB, which does charge it via any USB connection. However I notice that when I plug it into a system at work (Windows 7) the phone recognizes the USB connection and allows me to mount [I'm adding music I sent to myself this morning to the phone via this Win7 system]. Whereas the system at home the phone doesn't even see a USB connection present, so no mounting option. (I've tried all 4 USB ports on my personal laptop)
I'll DL PDAnet either tonight or tomorrow and see how this works. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll keep you posted.

Ok I've finally gotten the phone and computer to see each other. So I now have access to the SD card, however Vista still is not locating drivers.
Methods tried:
Installing, Uninstalling HTC Sync (various versions, new & old - including several reboots)
A tether program suggested in this thread
PDAnet
Directed Vista to folders with drivers.
Downloaded suggested drivers to Vista and pointed the system to particular folder
It's great that now I can take care of adding music etc... to the phone, but I had hopes of rooting as well, and it doesn't look like that's going to be a reality.
I'm still completely open to suggestions, and very grateful for all the assistance so far!
Since I just got this phone from asurion it's still on 1.5 would updating help? (I didn't want to update android for fear that I wouldn't be able to root, as I heard some update went out that prevented ppl from rooting)
-----------------
UPDATE:
I must have THE WORST Karma in the world, as soon as I posted this I stopped being able to see my SD card, and the phone keeps wanting to sync with HTC sync. No option to mount the USB anymore. I'm ready to bash my head and this phone repeatedly into a brick wall (after throwing my notebook off a balcony)
do you have sdk installed.
i had a hell of a time and ended up installing sdk in mydocuments instead of the root C:
again this is just one computer. my windows 7 machine was good from the start.
i haven't tried vista yet.
let me retrace my steps and see if i can help
this is also an option for rooting http://unrevoked.com/
i haven't tried it myself but you can download it to your phone and with a file explorer you can install it.
I've given up. This issue has made just pushed me completely away from Windows. I've realized that practically any USB device plugged in (except my old win mobile device) isn't recognized. Switching to Linux and hopefully a more compatible android experience.
Thanks for all the help!

My only thought (after having similar problems at work) is that there are still driver issues. I found a program called USBDeview that can be used to remove drivers left behind by other removal methods. It requires admin rights, so if you don't have those, sorry. If you still want to try, the program was a free download found using Google. Remove the drivers, reboot, and give it one more try.
okay, i just did a clean install of cognition 2.1.4 (took phone back to stock, rooted, then did a new install of it) ... and everything seems to be working okay other then i can not get my SD to mount on computer ...
it comes up asking me what way i would like the USB to connect when plugged in but after i select the correct one .. and then access the pull down menu to mount the drives it just does not give me the selection to do so ...
am i overlooking a step? something that is maybe different from the normal way to do it?

I've had this happen before, but generally a phone reboot will fix it- occasionally the problem is related to my USB port and I have to switch too. It's a really intermittent issue, but I haven't heard anyone else reporting that they're experiencing this consistently using the new Cog

If no, maybe try toggling around the settings. If you've got Kies installed make sure it isn't running, double check that it's in Mass Storage mode, etc. Reflashing would really be a last resort

hmmm wasnt aware you could do that without royally screwing up stuff.
Turn debugging on. Do not choose a connection type; that just forces you to turn debugging off first. Connect USB, pull down notifications, and choose the one that says something like click to download files (not near computer now so I can't check).

Nope, won't screw anything up, it'll just delete whatever contents you've stored on your internalSD (Not to be confused with your NAND where your OS and apps are installed)
Edit: Glad the steps posted by mobius worked!
ahhh ok thanks for the clarification .. i wasn't sure if it was safe to delete some stuff off the internal SD ... but now i see it is ... it may affect an app or two though when doing so ... but not the os it's self...

Yeah some apps tend to default to save some of their data to the internalSD (Camera/Titaniumbackup) but will store most of their mission critical data to the NAND, so at worst you'd lose game saves, pictures, or titanium backup data that you could recreate afterwards

it must be a powered usb hub, on my buddies laptop only 1 out of 4 usb ports saw his phone.
if you can get into download mode you arent bricked.
try installing i9000 drivers, or try another computer.
I came up with this a while back. Could very well be the same issue.
Let me start by saying I'm flash happy, and everyone that knows me personally, tells me to just quit jacking with my phone. NOT A CHANCE! I'm on my 3rd Cappy and shouldn't have ever exchange it again. I only had to in the beginning, because I was a newbie and had not know enough, but to get me in trouble.
I presume that this should work on all Windows OS's. I personally am running Vista Enterprise x86.
My symptoms:
Plug in phone to the usb and it there was about a 15% chance off being able to mount to usb, and Windows recognizing as a mass storage device. I tried un-installing drivers and re-installing and it would work some of the time, until the point came when parts of the driver install would fail. Then to the point when it was just completely unrecognizable. I thought I had it fixed because it seemed intermittent. In the middle of flashing to stock, something interrupted communication between the pc and my phone. Restarted the phone and attempted the flash again. Got a little farther and froze again. I had to use another pc that I had never connected my phone to before and I was able to use my jig to trigger download mode, because no buttons combinations would allow it into download mode.
This got me thinking that it was specific to my pc and not my cable or my phone.
My resolution:
I went straight to the registry and went to find. I deleted every entry that came up for "i897" and "i9000" excluding what was listed in the system volume information, as I didn't have permissions to remove any keys. I didn't keep count, but I probably deleted 300-400 registry keys that pointed to my phone. It seems as if with each developers rom that I had flashed, there was an entry for a different device. Don't quote me on that, because it is just my personal consensus. I also un-installed the samsung drivers, the unknown device driver, kies software, and anything associated with samsung. I noticed that next to all of the i9000 instances, the hex key for me started with 1000ee. So I also searched for the first part of that key trying to ensure that all instances of the device. Lastly, I deleted the samsung folder from program files.
I installed the samsung drivers package commonly listed in all of the other threads for x86 operating systems. I plugged in my phone and watched as each and every driver installed successfully. Keep in mind different drivers are installed depending on if you have usb debugging on/off, and the options for if the preferences on you phone are set to media, storage, or kies. I have multiple usb ports, however testing has shown me that, for me and my setup, I can plug into the port that I used when installing the drivers the final time, I am able to connect consistently. Earlier today, I tried to plug into a different usb port and it was an unknown device. I am led to believe, this is because I didn't un-install the unknown device on this particular port.
If you intend to work in the registry, please remember to always back it up first. You can always restore.
Hopefully my findings can help you as they did me. Happy flashing and I would like to thank the community for the dedication to assisting each other and the developers, for making flashing, better than crack cocaine. Flashing rom's doesn't make you twitch near as much as a crackhead.
Well since you can't use your phone you should sell it to me

Hi there, I'm new here. Did alot of reading on rooting etc. Very helpfull.
I basically downloaded the latest version of Samsung Kies today (for future updates), but the program will not startup. I uninstalled/reinstalled a couple of times but after I double click on the icon, windows (7) loads for a couple of seconds and then nothing happens.
After like 2 minutes or so something like a start screen appears out of the blue and disappears after another 2 minutes. Nothing happens after that.
In the task manager Kies and KiesTrayAgent appear in the processes list (not in the application list) though.
I tried to run them both (and even the ConnectionManager that pops up on it's own after I try to open Kies) as admin AND in compatibility (hope I spelled that right) mode but that doesn't work. When I select the ConnectionManager to run as admin only and then try to open Kies, the following appears:

I tried searching everywhere, but I just can not find a solution anywhere.
Can anyone help?
Sorry for the bad English.
Cheers!
edit: I do have a Note btw, that's why I posted here.
Anyone please?
Thanks!
What version of Kies are you using?? Try another version(Maybe one step down to latest).
Try opening the software without connecting the phone...

SAMSUNG Kies v2.2.0.12014_18_8 is the latest version. I tried installing previous versions and then I get a Runtime Error display or something.
I never tried opening Kies with my Note connected to the computer.

Then give it a shot with your note connected!! (That wont make much of a difference as Kies in not initializing properly, but you never know )
Just wanted to know has it ever worked for you on this computer??
It can be an OS issue as well, can you try on a different machine??
Cause once I was getting issues with Kies on my Dell Inspiron, so tried it on another machine and the same installation file worked perfectly for me.
I did an OSRI on my Dell Inspiron and the same installer worked for me on Inspiron as well.
So in that case it was Windows OS to be blamed, so first try to install the same latest installer on another win7 machine and see if it works!!
Then take it from there!!
Click Thanks if it Helped!!

Didn't work with the Note connected.
And I want to use Kies for the first time so I never tried it before on my pc. And I'm pretty sure Kies works on other systems because there are alot of people using it without a problem hehe. Unfortunately I don't have a laptop or something.
I mean I could download and install in on another system that's not mine, but the whole point is that I want to use it on my own pc. I know there has to be a way to fix it.
Thanks anyway .
Delete KIES, both program as install file. Run Ccleaner (or any other registry cleaner). Download KIES again (maybe you just had a flawed download). Reinstall and try again.

I did everything you said, but no luck . Thanks anyway!!
I guess OSRI should help cause you are getting some runtime errors as well, even some missing dll's.....that can work!!

Yeah I guess that would do the job. I installed KIES on my parents laptop and it works fine, so I guess I'll stick to that, only thing is I have to travel like an hour or so lol. I don't think it's worth to do a full OSRI just for KIES or maybe I'm just lazy, but at least I have access to the program.
Thanks for your help!!
