Ereader help from my XDA Family :)

Really in the market for an ereader since all my textbooks from college and technical stuff weigh over 150lbs, I am just wanting to know who has had anything other than the NOOK. And in forms of ereader which is the best for viewing PDFs as well? Found that Calibre drops alot of my content when converting so maybe I will stick with the PDFs instead. Any suggestions I know this is a Nook forum but I am pretty sure the being the savvy people on XDA that we are someone has had something besides the Nook.

Probably, if you only need it for reading textbooks in PDF, the Kindle DX is the best option, but it's only a e-ink reader and is pretty expensive for that.

Yeah, the DX can display PDFs in full size. It's very nice, but I found it to be pretty bulky. I love my Kindle 3 as an e-reader. The main advantage the NC has over Kindle 3 is that it's got a touch screen in full color. The Kindle 3's advantage is that it's battery life can be measured in weeks not hours and the screen doesnt' have any glare at all in sunlight.

The sony "pearl" eink reader is on sale for 105 with a $25 off(can get on ebay for <$1) or $120 at buy.com. Its supposed to be much faster at rendering pdfs than the kindle.

Just played with the Kindle 2 and 3 from co-workers really nice devices, no one has a Sony but the video on the sony on youtube with it against kindle making me lean on kindle in that form. I guess its between kindle and nook as stated I wish I could load some course books on each to compare, oh well. Thanks again guys, how is the nook on eye strain?

I've used all three and they're variations (sony kindle and nook), and for text books I prefer the nookColor rooted for mine, since mine have alot of color and complex formatting in diagrams. Kindle DX is okay if you don't need color.
Don't get the nook original for textbooks or PDFs with odd formating or diagrams, unless you figure some way to render them properly. I always had trouble with mine.
go to a local Staples if you have one, I think they have display DX's.
EDIT: nookClassic refresh and contrast are great. on par with kindle after 1.5 update

Yeah looks like the nook color will be nice, man just trying to get rid of alot of reference and texbooks. And true alot of diagrams wouldn't make sense if they weren't in color. On the fence I guess 249.99 vs 129.99 , and I may have to get my girl something for Valentines day (she may get cheaper of the two )

theres a few paid pdf apps on the market that do a much better job then the built in one.. ezpdf for example

I currently own a chinese android tablet with an 8" screen but it has a resistive screen which can get annoying. I got it for $175 including shipping to new zealand.
I was about to buy a bigger and capacitive screen version of the samel model for $350 but i just didnt think it was worth investing that much on a chinese tablet.
i have been a member of the xda forums for a little while now because of my htc wildfire forum and the support here has always been great. so i had a look the tablets section of the forum and decided to buy a tablet from the list of forums available here. there isnt that great support for chinese tablets from the vendors and not many custom roms out there.
i narrowed my search down to three devices. the galaxy tab but it is a little out of my budget of the $300 region. same goes to the gtablet. so it came down to the nook color.
the only problem is the screen size. i will only be doing some emails, browsing, since im a uni student maybe some course related apps for reading notes and document creation/editing if i cant finish it at home and maybe a game once in a bluemoon. i thought the 8" size of the chinese one was a bit small but maybe thats because i always have my dad sitting next to me with his ipad lol. is the 7" size big enough?
also, i heard that the nook color has a battery life of 8hrs for reading books. is this dramatically affected by loading the customs roms available here?
would appreciate any advice on whether i should settle for the nook color or you have some other suggestions? thanks

I find the Nook Color a very decent "Mobile Tablet" as I call it. It is a whole lot smaller then the iPad but because of this it is comfortable to hold with one hand which is very handy when on the go. I'm personally running Nookie Froyo off a 4gb Class 4 MicroSD and am pretty satisfied(Just got a Class 6 because I needed another card anyway so will be switching but Class 4s work) it's fairly stable and runs smoothly. I had to Manually enable Market as the default ROM doesn't include it but it was PreRooted. Nookie Froyo is pretty much complete, only missing Features like GPS, Camera, and Bluetooth(Reason being lack of Phisical Hardware but they're working on Bluetooth) Things like the Youtube App work, Flash is a Bit slow but usable, and using Rockplayer you can watch AVIs(Use the Arm7 version). I do recommend Nookie Froyo over Rooted Stock because of the Advantages of Android 2.2. Also go to Nookdevs.com for anykind of Nook related hacking How-Tos.
As to battery life, for Normal mostly text based web browsing and reading I get around 7 hours, more if I turn off Wi-Fi. Obviously playing games and watching Videos Drains it faster. Although I generally find the Nook Color's screen to bright and usually leave it at 0% brightness, but sometimes even that is too bright so I recommend getting the Screen Filter App. Also, I find the Nook Color charges fairly quickly.

It's plenty big. Also the screen was shaped like a Book so pages fit well. I've tried several Office Suites and am still deciding on which is best but as far as the ability to edit goes, it works well.
In the latest Nookie Froyo the Dev fixed the Touchscreen problems that have been plauging it. I'll tell you how it goes as soon as I get a chance to update.

just need to look at/know the dimensions of a 7" tablet. we dont have nook color here in new zealand, so might just walk down and have a look at the samsung galaxy tab, just to see what a 7" screen looks like and then order a nook color off ebay unless you know some other source which ships internationally? b&n are not shipping to nz btw

Yeah I find the 7" size is better for portability, while my iPad is better for surfing the web from the couch. I rarely carry the iPad anywhere with me, while I take the NC everywhere. Due to the fair price of the Nook Color, and its size, I'm not worried about losing/damaging it as much, and it is more convenient for most things.

im just really confused. i love the fact that the nookColor is branded and ofcourse it has a great community support on here.
but at the same time, im really not convinced that the 7" screen is sufficient. there is a 9.7" capacitive 800MHz 512mb ram tablet with a relatively good battery for a chinese product and its 300 bucks.
really dont know if i should just go with the nookColor or the chinese one. any advice/opinions please?

I was about to buy the herotab mid816, which had really good specs for the price, but after finding the nook color, I went straight for the nook, and I could almost not be happier and once some of the bugs are worked out on gingerbread and honeycomb it should be a perfect device for the price. It is quite snappy, and runs most of the programs i find perfectly, in addition i get great battery life running a rooted stock rom, with dalgrins kernals.

Just bought a nook color and loving it

I just got to say, I am a viewsonic gtablet user and been playing with it for 3 months and loved it but was tempted by the nook color at walmart yesterday and I must say after rooting it and trying out HC. I love it, thanks for all the support here guys. Dual booting stock with nookie froyo now.I almost feel guilty, I haven't touched my gtablet in a over a day. Really loving the screen quality too.

I havent used any other tablets but I have really enjoyed my nook the few days I have had it. Good to hear I made the right choice from someone who has an actual tablet.

Even if other tablets are much better (I don't think many are yet, especially considering the price of the NookColor), there isn't anything I've seen that is so easy and fun to mod. I have really learned a lot playing with this thing and I really like knowing that it is almost impossible to screw anything up beyond repair.

I have a Viewsonic GTablet myself, but I really want a Nook color for its better screen and portability. My gtab is too heavy for reading ebooks. Is there a big weight difference? Coming from a gtab can you tell me any pros and cons? also does anyone know if Pocket Legends and Dungeon Defenders will run on Nook Froyo or HC?

I am constantly amazed at how people can love a tablet with such an awful screen. When put next to an NC, it just makes the viewsonic that much more face palm worthy. I likely would have kept my viewsonic if the only thing wrong with it was software. I regret buying it but not returning it. I have no regrets about my NC especially when it costs nearly 50% less.

Yeah I bought the nook color because its more portable and I started reading more on the kindle app and found my g tab a little heavy. The screen on the g tab never really bothered me on my g tablet but after seeing the nook color screen, I am afraid it will be. The Nook color weighs about half a pound less than the g tablet. I don't really miss the usb port or the camera never used it much. I wish it had Bluetooth working but I have read there are people here working on it. Battery life seems pretty good so far but I also found the g tablet excellent as well. Here is a page I was looking at before I bought mine. Haven't played those games so I can't say.

I play pocket legends on eclair. Don't know about HC or froyo.

Anybody got a hold of a Acer A100 to compare to Nook Color?

The title pretty much says it all. With new tablets coming out at the 7" size, with honeycomb already installed, and they are coming down in price, I might be tempted to go to one of those. The main things that I don't have on my nook that I wish I did was a camera (not so much for taking pictures, but for scanning QR codes and barcodes), and a microphone/headphone jack (I don't use a microphone but I do run a small business and I need to accept credit cards and the portable credit card readers must have a microphone/headphone port in order to work). Some of the new tablets coming out have what I want, and the price just might be tempting enough.
I just wanted to see if anybody got their hands on one (since walmart is apparently stocking them at some stores??) and if they can compare it to their nook color.

Amazon is rumored that their new tablets will be released Aug - sept this year - so I expect that 7" tablets will be coming to market around that time frane.

Apparently you haven't seen the postings on engadget and everywhere that show the a100 popping up at random walmarts around the country. It has shown up and it does have honeycomb.

And the article you mention says this: "Update: What you see in the wild is a display tag -- not the elusive A100, of course. You can't pop into a Walmart to buy one yet, but if that sticker is any indication, that'll change soon."
The tags are there, but no one yet has picked one up.

In the posts at the bottom there are people that say that their walmart has both the a500 and a100 in stock.

5 Hours of battery life...
I think I'll stick with the Nook for now. If I'm going to give up battery time for something, it better be able to push pixels like a Kal-El device.

I just purchased the acer Iconia Tab a100 8gig wifi model last night at my local walmart for $328 (+tax) with a free $50 walmart gift card. I have previously owned the nook color and dell streak and I use my wife's ipad and I have an iPhone 4.
I am honestly thinking of going back to the nook color or waiting for something a little lighter, thinner and less "slippery". The back and sides of the a100 are a slick plastic that makes holding the tab a bit of work.
I have been waiting for the 7 inch honeycomb as my wife's ipad is just too big and heavy and my iPhone too small for the daily reading that I do online and through apps. I thought the 7 inch would be the "just right" size.
It still may be, but I don't think this is my device. Also, not having Netflix is a huge bummer.
I look forward to reading others' impressions as I play with it for the next week.

My local walmart didn't have them in as of saturday. I plan on stopping at another walmart today in hopes of finding one. If I get one, I'll post a write-up comparing it to my nc.

Nook color has a headphone Jack. Not sure if you knew this and maybe its in the wrong place or something but just pointing out its there and works great and so do Bluetooth headsets as well I believe

For what he is needing, he needs a headphone jack with the additional mic input (our nook only has the headphones), since the CC reader uses the mic to send data to the card program.

Been waiting for it to show up at my local Walmart along with the Vizio tablet. The Android Tablet landscape is starting to get exciting!

I'd be interested to know what the tangible differences are between Nook Color and any tegra II tablet.
The only tablet I've owned is my NC and love it, but want to know if I were to upgrade to any Tegra II tablet ( or later Kal-El ) what noticeable differences would I have with an upgrade.
* Is websurfing / pageload superfast in comparison.
* Is HC multitasking easier to navigate
* Other things I haven't considered.
The only hang ups I have on my Nook ( rooted / OC CM7 ) - and they're minor - is that webpage downloads on WIFI is slower than I'd like and always will want more battery life. Rendering can have a slight lag when resizing .pdf documents. My gaming is very light - so not missing much there.

I was up for the A100 but with no IPS screen quality and with just 5hour+ battery life it is a no go. I want battery life 8hr and up. Plus it is not as thin as the nook. I am loving my Nook!!!

The thin form of the Nook Color is definitely a plus. It's one reason I'm not in a rush to upgrade. I am hoping the next generation tablet will have a nice mix of battery life, and power, with a slim form.
Just saw that Sony had a new Screen with ultra low power draw " MAGIC WHITE LCD Panel ". Maybe that'll be the thing that extends the battery life for next generation.

I have a Galaxy tab 10.1 (with latest update) and the Nook color (running cm7 150 nightly 1200Mhz). The Gtab loads pages faster, maybe not superfast. But the thing that stands out is that scrolling webpages there is as smooth as a desktop browser.
The stock HC browser has something called "quick control" where the browser takes the whole screen, and you access controls (a semi circle control wheel) by swiping the thumb slightly on either side of the tablet. It's awesome, and much better than anything on the cm7 stock browser or dolphin browser.
Honeycomb's multitasking isn't that much better than what you can do now with long press of the home button on cm7.
And just a rough estimate on battery life, based on experience only, is that the Gtab 10.1 would last about 40% longer on a charge than a the NC.

I had really wanted to buy a Dell Streak to replace my Captivate a while ago, before buying a NC. How does the Streak compare to the Nook Color?
I went and looked at the a100 the other day. At first, i thought the features were absolutely great for the price. Then I began to learn why. The body quality is not near the Nook Color, the body is made of glossy-ish plastic, the screen is not IPS, and battery life is half what my Nook gets.

I just picked up the A100 today and posted a quick video comparing it to the nook color. I'll try and do some pageload comparisons with both stock and dolphin browsers either tonight or tomorrow. So far, the A100 beats NC is sound quality and OS, but is much more slippery than the NC. I'll post some more thoughts as I play with it more. Can't post links yet, but here you can see the video at:

I just can't let the Nook Color go! [Well, not really :D]

I've been enjoying my NC since February. I use it mainly for e-books, e-mail, web surfing, casual gaming and occasional Netflix streaming. I love tinkering with it using different ROMs, etc.
About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a XOOM and have been enjoying it as well. Initially, I thought that I would just sell the NC since it would be redundant to have two Android tablets, but I just can't let it go. The experience of using both devices is very different. While XOOM is great for surfing the web (native resolution webpages without zoom in/out), typing long e-mails or watching a movie, NC is very portable and perfect for reading (can't hold the XOOM -or any other 10.1" tab for that matter- in one hand for an extended period of time).
I guess I'm going to keep both. I was wondering if any of you were/are in the same situation? Did you end up keeping the NC?

I'm not quite in this position just yet. But I know exactly how you feel. I really enjoy the Community that the Nook Color has, I love the size and portability that comes with this device.
But I want more. Really, I want to be able to have a tablet media center on the go, and the Nook is really lacking without hdmi out.
So I find myself really pondering what to jump for next... And unfortunately few things are making me want to. Doesn't help that I promised the wife this Nook Color in fall for her classes... Hope Amazon hurries up with their Nook Killer a.k.a Coyote.

I'd like to pick up a 10" tab running android.
I can't see ever getting rid of the Nook Color, even when that happens. I'll own this device until the end of it's life.
I like the form factor, and the nature of it as an e-book reader means it will always have use for me.
I can't see being the avid reader I am on a 10" tab.
I've been looking at tablets with my lady, and she still wants a Nook Color. It's the size that does it for her, and the quality of the device.
The Nook Color hits a quality level in it's offering that hasn't been seen in quite some time on the regular retail market.

This is going to sound weird after stating this thread, but I sold the Nook Color today
Someone made an offer that I couldn't resist (came ahead at the end), and after seeing the upcoming 7" tablets, as well as the 8.9" Sammy and anticipated Amazon tablet, I decided to let the little guy go before its value stats to decrease due to competition.
I'll be definitely picking up a 7" tablet to accompany my XOOM in the future, but I don't know which one yet.
I guess this should be my good by post to the Nook community. It's been fun!

Does the Acer bring with it the end of the NC as a tablet?
I looked up what specs I could find and the features do look impressive, except for the battery. It appears this is the tradeoff that was made to cut down on weight so "it would be suitable for female users". 1530mah that will last up to 5 hours? That sounds a bit optomistic to me. To put it in perspective the NC has a 4000mah battery that is supposed to last up to 8 hours.

No tablet currently available can beat the nooks beautiful screen. You can all the specs in the world but if your screen sucks there really isn't any point to it.

Isn't it just an IPS screen with 1024 x 600 resolution? None of the tablets (not just 7" competitors)? Really?
There are many tablets in the market with similar -or better- screen compared to NC. Besides, my XOOM doesn't have an IPS screen and I'm perfectly happy with it.

When you look at the overall specs of the nook as compared to the other 7" tabs on the market, the nook just comes out on top. This takes into account the price and the screen. One of the most comfortable things about the nook IMO is the design which boots first from the sd card. It is almost impossible to brick this thing. The only feature the other tablets have that I would want is a functional webcam. With CM7 and host mode enabled, I have all the features the other tablets have except webcam. At present, HC, as an OS, leaves a lot to be desired, the other tabs have poor to average battery life and there are few tablet optimized apps. Yes, HC can run all the apps out there but the overall results are somewhat less than optimal. For my money, I'll wait till q4 when we should have ICS and the quadcore chips out there. Not trying to flame any other tablets but I have tried out most of the 10" tabs extensively and have not found one I would jump on right now. Just saying.....

I may be looking into selling my nook here. The new 7" Acer Iconia seems like a great deal @ ~$300, with all the dual core goodness and nook size, but I shall be waiting for reviews before making up my mind.

As already mentioned in this thread, the main category that NC lags behind is anything multimedia related. The speaker, headphone jack, lack of microphone, etc etc. Of course, these are not expected on a NC, because it was designed as an eReader. However, since you are putting it above other tablets -even the 10.1" ones- then the comparison will be valid (again, normally I wouldn't even compare it).

Actually, one of the reasons that I decided to sell the NC now was because it is pretty much alone in its segment (i.e., 7" tablet) and the price is its biggest strength. However, any 7" tablet that is around $300 may make it harder to sell the NC in the future.
As I mentioned, I am still in the market for a 7" tablet. I just need Staples to start carrying 7" models, so that I can get it for next to nothing

So, you're saying size really DOES matter... lol... just had to!

My situations with the Nook is this. I didnt need a tablet. Couldn't even try to make up an excuse as to why I needed to buy one. All I knew is after reading these threads is that I just wanted one. Now I couldn't live without it. Its totally replaced my laptop and put a serious dent in my main desktops use too. I will buy another tablet once one is released that's worthy but the Nook has earned its right to stay indefinitely.

I bought the Nook Color because it was cheap and hackable and I figured it'd keep me busy and avoid ay temptation to buy something fancy/expensive because there will be lots of movement in the field this year. But once CM7 came out for it I've just been a really happy camper. I think what it's going to take to get me to move is a 4x3 aspect IPS screen maybe running ice cream sandwich, and a "family" data plan so I don't have to think about tethering or wifi access. The 16x9 screen just doesn't fit web pages or book reading nicely when in portrait orientation which I seem to favor. Yeah I just described an iPad, but I'm not going there.

Rumor has it that XOOM2 will be in 4x3 aspect and will be released -according to Moto CEO- in September.
