flashing a new kernal - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a captivate running firefly v2.04 and i want to flash the firebird 2 kernal , never done this before what is the best way

1.) download the kernal, and put it into the root of your sd.
2.) boot into recovery mode (vol+ vol- power all at the same time till you see your boot logo) undo lag fix
3.) select install zip from sd card,
4.) navigate to the kernal zip you put on the sd card.
5.) install.
6.) make sure phone boots.
then reinstall lagfix.
done.

I've never had any luck with that app. My only brick came from doing it that way.

and for the the kernels here that are updated after January, there's no need to disable lagfix.

Yeah, don't know what happened, but I killed my phone LOL.
The way I posted works perfect for me everytime.
It might not be the most efficient way, but its the safest i've found.

Flashing Firebird 2.06 into Phoenix 4.1
I intend to use SGS Flasher to backup and flash kernels after viewing this video:
youtube.com/watch?v=V1s3TQ3rL-U
Btw, has anyone heard whether Firebird 2.05/2.06 is "better" than Speedmod when used on Phoenix 4.1? I've read conflicting statements about earlier versions of Firebird and Phoenix but haven't read much to suggest lately either way.
Thanks.

Thanks. I didn't even think to check if Hardcore updated SpeedMod (which he did as of today: touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/12/at-captivate-download-speedmod-kernel.html).
Here are two kernel flashing questions:
a) if you are using SGS Flasher, does it matter if you download the Odin version or the CWM version of a kernel? None of the FAQs seem to answer this question.
b) Kernels for Captivate are either for i897 or i9000/M. Some custom roms for the i897 are based off of the i9000/M models (as demonstrated by the bootup animation). So, if you were to install a Kernel, should you get the i897 kernel version or the i9000/M kernel version?
Thanks.

Cool! Thanks for the guidance!

Damn.
I backed up my speedmod kernel used SGS Flasher. I tried to use SGS Flasher to flash the new SpeedMod K12S with HZ=500 CWM zip. The flash failed almost immediately. The phone seems to be fine.
* I downloaded the zip directly from DG's page. (I tried to unzip to see if there was some other file type to flash but I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to flash the zip.)
* Root was successfully acquired by SGS Flasher.
* At the time of the attempted flash, Wi-Fi was on, the sim card was installed, as was the external sd card.
I do not, and cannot, use any version of Odin and Heimdall seems too obtuse to me without step by step directions. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to do anything in SGS tools first? I don't have a settings db file. Could that be a problem?
Sigh.

dl link for kernel

Dl to phone. open app, select choose kernel, click ....., navigate to where kernel is saved, select file, flash kernel
Or
Dl kernel, move to sd of phone, go into recovery, select install zip from sd, choose zip, select kernel, confirm.

HELP HELP HELP!!! i9000 flashing boot screen after using odin

I just tried to do a ROM update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671
And now after the phone reboots I get the flashing boot screen Samsung GT-i9000. I can get back into download mode, but nothing else.
What shoudl i do? This is my first time doing this, go figure....lol
yet another deadly post.
anyway reflash the darkys 9.2 make sure you add 512 pit and tick the re-partition box in odin.
make sure KIES is closed if you have it, even in the icon tray.
let odin do its thing, if the phone starts talking after the flash dont panic, its normal
I just did that and no luck. same thing... I just remembered that I had recovery 3e not 2e. does that matter???? I am getting a flashing loading circle (looks like a sun) in the middle of the screen. Then I unplug the usb, and get a flashing galaxy s boot screen.
that dont matter as darkys rom will give you 2e recovery (voodoo kernel)
load all your files into odin and take a screenshot and post it here so i can double check for you.

well all that looks good
try using odin 1.7 its much safer you may get better results.
if that fails we will have to get you back to stock and try again
I did buy this phone used, so it might have not had a stock rom on it? would that matter... I will try odin 1.7 first. Thanks again for the help!!!!
no that does not matter, putting the phone back to stock will in theory make the phone new again. then we can eradicate any errors and start again.
let me know how it goes with odin 1.7
Try to put the original gingerbread rom and follow the video in darky's post. I flashed the same rom some time ago and had no problems. Be careful in Odin what options you check/uncheck and to put the PHONE, PDA and CSC.
Good luck.
Still no luck.....
Same flashing screen....
BTW this is a GTi9000-M

???? I never put anything under phone or csc
bell version ?? well you forgot to tell me that earlier didnt ya ? lol
what rom was you on prior to this ?
you ony get phone pda csc when you have a full firmware. darkys 9.2 is compressed into 1 pda .md5 file so dont worry
Model: i9000M
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I9000XXJPK
Kernal: 2.6.32.9 shout.lee @ SEP-09 #6
Build: FROYO.UGJL2
LOL, sorry man...
looks stock to me.
as if darkys 9.2 hasnt even touched your phone
before we get you flashing back to stock, download and flash a kernel that supports I9000M - something like CF-Root, speedmod, voodoo..
flash that through ODIN and let me know if its successful, then we can do a wipe and flash something else in recovery
Can you recommend one (Link)? I have no idea what one to use.

I propose also versions only the lagfix only, called stock+Voodoo because they are build around the kernel compiled by Samsung
stock+Voodoo-latest XYJS8:
Flash with Odin: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...9000-XWJS8.tar
Flash with CWM: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...ned-update.zip
stock+Voodoo-latest XYJS5:
Flash with Odin: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...9000-XWJS5.tar
Flash with CWM: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...ned-update.zip
stock+Voodoo-latest XYJS3:
Flash with Odin: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...9000-XWJS3.tar
Flash with CWM: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...ned-update.zip
stock+Voodoo-latest XXJPY:
Flash with Odin: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...9000-XXJPY.tar
Flash with CWM: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...ned-update.zip
stock+Voodoo-latest XXJPX:
Flash with Odin: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...9000-XXJPY.tar
Flash with CWM: http://dl.project-voodoo.org/stock+V...ned-update.zip
JPX, JPY, JS3 versions are based on Samsung pre-compiled kernels. This is why those are feature limited (no Voodoo sound, no BLN, no sharpness adjustment).

[Q] How to update my i9000m with 2.1?

First guys, sorry if I'm in the wrong section or repeat thread. I just got a Galaxy i9000m from Bell with 2.1 on it and I've passed two nights reading threads and I'm confused. I only have a mac and kies doesn't work for me. I just rooted it and I've download Rom Manager. From now, can I load any roms with Rom manager? I mean can I put a 2.3 rom on internal sd card and load it with RM and it will install? Thanks for any advise, I'll keep searching but i'm so confused and I'm afraid of bricking it.
quick answer... no
you need to be able to update things like bootloaders etc... this usually only happens using kies or odin... I do not have a mac so I cannot answer on how you can update, but i know you cannot do it just on your phone.. a bell mobile store will update it for you if you take it in, it only takes a few mins.
Thanks a lot for your time!!! You def stopped me from bricking it. I was lost
I don't want to bother you but do you know if I can upgrade directly from 2.1 to 2.3? Just to be sure, things I need is the rom, a FW with bootloaders, a kernel, install all this with Odin? I may try your configuration with Juwe's since we have the same phone. thanks again!
I'm not sure about going right from 2.1 to 2.3 but it is maybe worth your while to go to 2.2 and then to 2.3.. it's like a whole extra 5 mins. Just setup an account at Samfirmware.com
Get the i9000UGKC1 downloaded... it is the Bell stock 2.2 flash to that first... and un-root your phone using superoneclick. Quick reading tips to look-up
-how to get 850 modem back (important for bell users)
-flashing modems only
-Superoneclick
-Gingerbread bootloaders
Do alot of reading about gingerbread roms before you upgrade, this ROM is good that I'm on... you just have to make sure you flash a stock JVH with bootloaders or it will mess something up.. not sure what, I just followed the directions.
thanks for the tip!!! So I always have to be unroot to flash a firmware (2.1 to 2.2)?
I'm gonna stick to 2.2 for now. But I have a question...I download the i9000gkc1 FW and the pit 512. But am I supposed to have a PDA, CSC, and PHONE to put in Odin? Cause I only have i9000gkc1_homebinary.tar and if I extract it, it only gave me files like modem.bin, sbl.bin, factoryfs.rfs...
Million thanks!!!
For 2.2 alot of the stock firmwares there is only one file, the PDA. This file contains the modem and csc files... this is not the case with 2.3
So just flash the PIT and the PDA and flash the pda as the .tar file
Heimdall works fine on mac. But really can't you just use a friend's windows PC for 15 minutes to upgrade with kies? It's by far the easiest way to upgrade to KC1 (2.2)
2.3.3 isn't released yet in Canada so it's not available through kies (at least not without a hack)
If you want to flash 2.3.3, I would use the gingerbread starter (flash it trough heimdall, kernel and boot loaders only) and then flash any 2.3.3 ROM through clockworkmod recovery.
Super!! I'm gonna try that. Do you know if I should un-root before installing this 2.2 FW? Do I have to check re-partition? thanks again my friend!!!
thanks!!! I used my friend's pc but I wasn't able to install kies...always get an internet error. I might try with another one but I think I'm gonna use Odin since I heard kies has a lot of bugs. After installing 2.2, I'll def check for your GB starter tip. Thx for your help!!!
You can flash from 2.1 or 2.2 right to 2.3 without a "starter", the phone doesn't care. This is assuming you're flashing with odin or heimdall. If you're flashing a cooked rom from the development section, then it might not hurt...
Having said that, I've flashed 2.1, flashed speedmod and restored a 2.3 cwm backup and it has always worked fine.
he has to make sure he gets the 2.3 bootloaders
Thanks guys for all your help!! I really appreciate! Now I will update 2.1 to 2.2 using Odin but can you check if I'm doing it right or missing something.
So I have the FW i9000GKC1_homebinary.tar that I would place in PDA in Odin. I'll put the the 512 pit in the PIT in Odin. Start the process.
- Should I UN-check the re-partition box?? The only things checked are auto-reboot and F. reset time...?
- Should I unroot it before flashing?
- Do I remove my sim card?
Alot of people suggest removing your ext-sd and SIM (I hardly ever do)but it's not a bad practice
I usually check re-partition with 512 pit and always leave reboot and Freset checked
you do not need to un-root, after flash your phone will be un-rooted and you will need to use superoneclick program to root phone. Just search for it in the forum/google/youtube

Exactly, and I would also make sure to upgrade boot loaders when upgrading to KC1. The i9000m had issues with some old boot loaders (like no download mode or scdard failures)
I should upgrade bootloaders for 2.2?? I dont really know what bootloaders are exactly for. If I need it before installing 2.2, can you tell me which one do I need? You guys lost me I use Odin3 v.1.7 and I have no bootloader box. I downloaded v.1.82 that has Bootloader option but I think its for another device version, no? Are you guys talking about that or the little square box "phone bootloader update"? I was ready to go but now I'm not so sure....
There are two files sbl.bin (secondary boot loader) and boot.bin (primary boot loader). When you upgrade with KIES the bootloaders get updated too.
You can use heimdall on your Mac to update to KC1 with the boot loaders. But sometimes when you download a ROM the boot loaders aren't included so check that first.
With ODIN 1.7 you should see this:

Yes you have to check the boot loader check box. But You must still check that sbl.bin and boot.bin are in your tar file.
thanks!!! So I unrar my .tar file and I only have Sbl.bin, modem.bin, factoryfs.rfs, cache.rfs, param.lfs, zimage. I don't have the boot.bin file you told me. Can I still check the "phone BL udpate" box or it won't work? What should I do at this point?
Hum, probably that there is no need for a primary bootloader update for KC1 then. You can still check it.
CRAP!!! I flash it but it tells me succeed 1/failed 1. Now it boots, shows the galaxy s i9000m logo, then goes to the big S logo and turns has a black screen. And the phone vibrates like evry 30 sec with black screen on. I took a picture of what I did and attached it. Is my phone broken? Can you help me please???
can you boot in download mode? (vol down + home + power)
I think you should flash modem and CSC. Especially since you repartitionned.

I9000M Bell Vibrant Root

Hi XDA members! Very excited to join this community and expand my knowledge or rather learn about development. I know NOTHING so please bare with me. I'm trying to root my Galaxy S Vibrant and I've been reading about rooting for months now with the hope of installing a custom ROM(?) like Cyanogenmod, but when I actually set out to do this I've been more confused. I guess there's different ways of rooting depending on carrier, version number, build type, os version, etc. I've tried to read the step by step processes of doing it, but I can't find links or the proper files to do it. I'm such a noob to this that I'm finding it discouraging. I'm not sure exactly of some of the terminology that is being used on these forums so that's why I need a walk through with all the links of what I need to do. I know that there's a learning curve and I'm willing to go through it, but I don't even know where to start. Can someone please walk me through this step by step on how I can root my phone and I'll worry about installing Cyanogenmod later?
Some phone details:
OS version: 2.3.3
kernal version: 2.6.35.7-I9000UGKG3
build number: GINGERBREAD.GKG3
Why stay on 2.3.3 when you can upgrade to 2.3.5? There are next to no custom roms available for your version of firmware. Your phone is basically the same as an I9000 international. Pretty much everything made for the i9000 will work on I9000M, the only thing that I do after I flash a new rom is flash my modem back to UGKG3, which is the modem you are using right now....check your phone in settings>phone>baseband version and you will see this is so. Go to this link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 and download 2.3.5 Europe: XXJVT/XXJVT/OXAJVT/Sbl (MultiCSC), extract the files. You want to use the one that says CODE. Now download 2.3.3 North America: UGKG3/UGKG3/BMCKG3/Sbl (MultiCSC), extract the files. You will use the ones that say CSC and PHONE. Now download (from the same link) Odin and pit files. Its under How to flash (you should read all of that about 5 times over) extract the files. You will have your Odin tool and 3 pit files. Your gonna use the one that says 512pit. So open up Odin...put the file from XXJVT that says CODE in the pda section....where it says phone use the file from UGKG3 that says PHONE...where it says CSC use the file from UGKG3 that says CSC...where it says PIT use the file 512pit.
Next you need to put your phone in download mode. Power it down and wait for it to vibrate about 10 seconds after screen goes black. Now hold down all together volume down + home key + power button. You should see download mode. Hook your phone up to your computer...you will see a com port on Odin go yellow...that means your connected. Press start....Its will take about 10 minutes. After Odin will say Pass, and reset...your phone will begin resetting. Once it reboots you will be running the XXJVT but with the North American modem.
Now you want to root...You need to choose a kernal that is made for XXJVT. I currently use Semaphore 1.8.0, there are newer versions of this kernal available and many other XXJVT kernals available. This is just my preference. You can find the download here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908 Its at the bottom of the first post.
semaphore_kernal_jvt_1.8.0.tar....this file does not need to be extracted.
Power down your phone again and put it in Download mode....reset odin to remove the previously used file...now put the semaphore download in PDA....connect phone....com port goes yellow....press start....after 10 seconds it will say pass, reset...phone will reset and voila you have rooted your phone.
There is a tone of information on this site, just read up and learn...Its almost impossibe to mess up your phone beyond repair....Just read everything 3 or 4 times before doing anything.

what do you mean by flashing back to the UGKG3 modem?
also, are there any other kernels beside the Semaphore one that you mentioned? Cuz i'm reading the changelog and it saids that the 720p video recording is broken and I really rely on my phone for videos....
I thought CM7 runs its own kernels ... can I use that instead?
After you are rooted, you might flash a rom on your phone like me Im on Simplicity rom, once I flash it, it changes my modem, so I flash my UGKG3 modem back in odin, since that is the north american modem that gives me the best signal.
As for the semaphore kernal I suggested, yes there are many. The one I suggested does not break 720 recording. Your are talking about semaphore 1.8.0bm...the bm means big memory, it has a bit more ram. I suggest semaphore 1.8.0...without the bm it does record 720 no problem, I use it all the time. As for CM7, I dont know...But I do know you need cwm in order to flash it.
Like I said there are more current versions of Semaphore available, just make sure you get the one that doesnt say bm at the end. The reason I suggest 1.8.0 is because it comes with superuser app and cwm app. Although Im hearing 1.9.1 is very good, I dont believe it has thes apps included so you would have to go and get them seperate...not a huge deal, Im just trying t make this easier for you.
ok... got rooted and new kernel....
time to play around to see if I can get CM7 on it

How did you do it so quickly? I read all of vanis' stuff, which was very helpful, but since I'm a noob I don't even know where to start. I was passionate about doing this, but every time I re-read what I have to do I get confused, frustrated and give up. It seems overwhelmingly enough that it would take me an entire weekend to do

Well, lets get something clear first... i got it rooted and flashed the kernel, i'm still having problems flashing to CM7 ... for some reasons, i'm having a boot loop during the installation process. So everytime, I need to re-ODIN with vanisleryan's instructions again just to get the phone to stop bootlooping. Since it doesn't look like ppl on this thread is familiar with CM7, i've gone looking for help on anther thread.
As for the ODIN part, i know it does seem overwhelming, but this is not the first 'droid device i've rooted, this is just the first Samsung device i'm rooting (hence my problems )
If you read vanisleryan's instructions, its really as straight simple as that.
Just download the 4 files that was indicated:
1) 2.3.5 Europe: XXJVT/XXJVT/OXAJVT/Sbl (MultiCSC)
2) 2.3.3 North America: UGKG3/UGKG3/BMCKG3/Sbl (MultiCSC)
3) Odin tool and 3 pit files
4) Semaphore 1.8.0 (this is optional because there are other suitable kernels, but I'm using this one too just for convenience)
get that done first and we can take it one step at a time.
first big question before you start:
- do you know how to get your SGS into Download Mode and does ODIN recognize your phone?
To get on cm7 from stock bell i9000m
Put latest cm7 nightly and latest gapps on internal sd
Get gingerbread ezbase
Flash ezbase
reboot iinto recovery
flash cm7
Flash gapps
Reboot
Done

I learned how to use Odin the hard way (issue following a Kies upgrade), so I'll pass on what I've learned. Hope this will help.
If you have the abomination known as Kies installed, you already have the USB phone drivers on your PC.
As noted in vanisleryan's post, download the JVT, KG3, Odin, and Semaphore rooted kernel files.
The JVT, KG3, and Odin files are self extracting archives, so just double click and indicate where you want them to extract to.
Leave the Semaphore tar file as-is.
Locate the directory where Odin unpacked itself to and run Odin.
Click on PIT and select s1_odin_20100512.pit from the directory where Odin is extracted to.
Click on PDA and select PDA_XXJVT_Sbl.tar.md5 from the GT_I9000_XXJVT_XXJVT_OXAJVT_Sbl directory
Click on PHONE and select PHONE_UGKG3.tar.md5 from the GT_I9000M_UGKG3_UGKG3_BMCKG3_Sbl directory
Click on CSC and select CSC_BMCKG3.tar.md5 from the GT_I9000M_UGKG3_UGKG3_BMCKG3_Sbl directory
After you have selected the files, your Odin should look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Put your phone in download mode (You should see this guy):
connect the phone to your computer, wait for Odin to recognize the phone (yellow coloured background in ID:COM box) and then press Start.
After you have performed the initial flash and it succeeds, disconnect your phone from your computer and close Odin.
Open Odin again, click PDA and select Semaphore_kernel_JVT_1.8.0.tar
Do not select anything else. Put your phone in download mode again, connect to your computer.
When Odin indicates it has recognized your phone, press the Start button.
Once complete, you'll be running a rooted i9000m with JVT codebase and will be using the Bell modem and related info.

Hi,
so i have a few kinks with the instructions provided here....
flashing to ezbase was straight forward, no problems there...
however, when i rebooted into recovery, i noticed that it was the 3E recovery and not a CMW recovery...
I've never flashed a CM7 ROM w/o CMW, but I gave it a try anyway...
and of course, i got an error ... "E:failed to verify whole-file signature" and "E:signature verification failed"
any suggestions?
To add another voice to the chaos:
The JVT modem is working well for my Bell gt-i9000m. I'm on Telus but they share frequencies so Bell should be cool too. If you're on cm7 check out siky_dude's modem thread in the developer forum.
Beware ... once you start flashing roms you're going to be doing it constantly. Get to know your backup/restore tools....

Did you need to do anything special to enable the 850 frequency, or is that what the KG3 CSC addresses (still a noob at some of this myself)?

1. can i flash a different kernel with while running ezbase (ie: Semaphore_kernel_JVT_1.8.0)
2. in ODIN, i know PDA = kernel, but when ppl say flashing the modem, does the modem = PHONE .... or does modem = CSC?

Hi,
for some reason, the DJBROM wouldn't flash successfully. I was still getting the 3E recovery and nothing flashed properly with the stupid recovery.
anyhoo, i ended up flashing ezbase 4.0 with TalonDev 2.2 kernel
finally, using that combination, I was able to get CWM3 onto the phone

ClockworkMod Recovery doesn't install over Samsung 3e

Friends, It seems that some users have successfully run ClockworkMod Recovery, but I myself have had no joy. The past two days I scoured this forum for fixes. I'll admit this is my first attempt to flash a custom ROM, and no little about Android, but as a legacy COBOL/DB2 programmer, I thought I was up to the challenge. Could you please review my procedure and advise.

[RECOVERY] 3e Recovery Modded w/ No Verification
PROBLEM:
Using ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM MGR indicates current
recovery is ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2 but DOESN'T DOWNLOAD FASTY II ROM or do anything except reboot into Samsung Recovery 3e or the stock at&t ROM. (note: originally I wanted to install Cognition 4.5.3, but decided on FASTY II in the download list for my inaugural installation.)
PLATFORM:
Samsung SGH-I897 Captivate for at&t
Firmware: stock 2.2 I897UCKB1 at&t froyo update from eclair
COMPLETED TASKS:
(note that before executing procedures I would open App Mgmt and force close most running apps including LookOut Security).
Set option Settings/Applications/Development/USB Debugging
Rooted phone
App software intsalled: SuperUser v3.0.7(41) bin v3.0.3
App software installed: Titanium Backup - returned SU auth allowed
Ran backups - normal eoj
App software installed: ROM Manager premium - returned SU auth allowed
Ran ROM Manager ClockworkMod Recovery - normal eoj returned CWM installed and displayed BOTH Current and Latest Recovery as ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2
Ran ROM Manager Download - no exceptions, but result was undetermined.
Here, after perusing the XDA-Dev forum, I determined the following fix was in order to allow unsigned program execution:
App software installed: Root Explorer v2.17.2
Copy modified '3e' Recovery file to \System\bin
Rebooted and flashed CWM again via Rom Manager - same as before: no exceptions, but no variances.
Discovered one post advising to:
Remove external SD card and reboot per forum thread and Reran CWM Recovery, but still no variance or exception.
THIS IS THE CURRENT STATE.
I didn't continue with DesignGears post:
"Also you cannot just replace the recovery file... you have to replace the images
in sbin or in the zImage its self, otherwise you get errors and cannot do anything." because I don't understand the terminology. Could someone please elaborate on this specification?
So, I'd really appreciate a second set of eyes here before I run through this whole routine again. I haven't read every thread here, but if someone could direct me to the answers, I'd be grateful. Thanks for your help.

Click my signature link below. There u will find a link to a Guide that will give u ur answers.
I went with the ODIN installation and it worked to a tee.
A note for Noobs: Before you start check the specs for your ROM to see if it's based on Android 2.2 (froyo) or 2.3 (gingerbread) to determine which kernel to flash. The chefs use abbreviations (i.e. cognition is based on KB1) that you can look up the meaning for in this post:
IF HAVEN'T ALREADY, READ THIS FIRST
It does not matter which you use.
This is a transitory kernel and the entire point of flashing it to get cwm is to FLASH A CUSTOM ROM, which will flash a compatible kernel with it.
So, there is no need to boot into the os after the initial kernel flash, just boot into recovery after, which will now be cwm and flash whatever.
Unless you're going from froyo to gingerbread, then yo will need to flash the correct bootloaders with Odin/heimdall
3e recovery problem..need help on file location...
Hi,
I have been looking at information on putting the 3e recovery .zip file on my phone. I watched a video, this really should be simple BUT, things are never simple for me!
I followed instructions UNTIL I came to
Copy modified '3e' Recovery file to \System\bin
I have a recovery with permissions rwxr-xr-x 404.77k in the ROOT
I have another recovery.rc permissions rw-r -- r -- 1.99k in the ROOT
When I go to the system/bin (via Root Explorer) there is NO recovery in there.
Can I/or should I copy over the recovery (404.77k) in ROOT?
or should I put the 3e recovery file in the \System\bin?
Could this be because I did NOT root with superoneclick and used the Fugu Root Method and it put the recovery file in a different directory?
ConfusedThanks for any help.

gramme66,
If u r still running stock i897uckk4, then just get the .tar version of this kk4 based kernel [KERNEL][KK4][12/10/11] Corn Kernel v6.03 w/ custom CwM5, Ext4, working nandroid and put it in the PDA slot of Odin3 v 1.83 or similar and connect ur phone in download mode to ur pc and hit start after Odin shows recognition of ur phone. It only takes Odin about 8 seconds to install, then ur phone will reboot. Afterwards u can use the button combo (hold volume+ and volume - and power button at same time until u see the att splash screen. Then release and u should be in CWM Recovery).
Here is an Odin (extract it from the .zip once u have it on ur pc. Then right click it and run as administrator, click the PDA tab, navigate on ur pc to the .tar Corn Kernel, and etc.)... View attachment 858759

what was the original reason you wanted cwm? to flash a rom? cause...you have the that you need to do that now.
power down...both volume buttons and power til you see the at&t screen then let go, that will boot into cwm.
from there, plug your phone into pc, go to mounts and storage, and mount usb storage, the on your pc tranfer rom to your internel sdcard...

Got an issue. After following the steps on page 1 of this thread, I then download ROM Manager, installed Clockwork Recovery (but didn't get the Samsung Captivate option), then I rebooted into Revovery, and my screen got stuck. All it showed was "CwM recovery systems corps" and a gray bar at the bottom of the screen. So, I pulled the battery, rebooted, and the Clockwork Recovery mode came up just fine. I think I did something wrong. Can you help?

You are absolutely right, not very nice, absolutely right. I realized that NOWHERE to be found were the words ROM Manager on the first page. It's just that I've always automatically used ROM Manager to go into Clockwork Recovery. Anyway, I unstalled it, and the method now works flawlessly.
yep. i'm a ****. i have learned to live with it over the years, yet i dont expect anyone else to learn to live with it in one afternoon.

Or alternatively if I install CM from my sdcard will it boot normally to CM or it still continues to struck with CWM?

I downloaded the cwm for my model (samsung galaxy note gt n7000) and flashed it when the mobile is in download mode using heimdall suite with the following command
heimdall flash --kernel zImage --no-reboot
I don't know whether the no-reboot has caused such error. But when I have gone through the readme.txt for heimdall suite help, it says that the no reboot only prevents it from automatically getting it rebooted but should work fine when we use the power button.

By flashing a new rom, u basically rewrites existing program and commands of your device, so if not due to wrong flash procedures or bad download, there's no way your phone won't boot.

Okay, but I have one more doubt about how to flash. I am thinking of flashing it with CM 10.2 and hence downloaded the zip. Now can I copy paste the zip file on to my external sd card, put it back to my mobile and flash it or is it better to use adb commands to transfer the file and flash. I just want to know whether the difference in these methods can cause any problem?

I got that the error is due to samsung kies which is trying to interfere with odin. I unchecked "Run Samsung Kies automatically when a device is connected" option from tools -> preferences in kies and tried. It worked and I got the phone booted normally back to JB now.
