Delete Superuser.apk w/o mounting SD card - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Help! I'm trying to return to as close to stock as possible so I can get a warranty replacement (SD won't mount, random shutdowns recently, Facebook/Twitter unable to sync). I was rooted, but have unrooted & done a master reset, but superuser.apk is still showing. How can I delete this without being able to mount to a computer via USB?
I've tried every USB port on my MacBook Pro & work Dell laptop and 2 different USB cords. No dice. Help!

shoulda removed before un-rooting... but still
pretty simple. do a factory reset. or use Odin3's 1 click (NOT Odin3 flasher) to restore it to factory At&t.

but at the same time the dumbass at the store wont know what superuser is. return it anyway, Samsung will just test and wipe it anyway

LOL haha haha

ok there might be one or two.. but they will smirk at you.

Superuser app should go away if the phone is unrooted.
Unroot your phone again. I had to return a phone with a dead USB port and had to do this as well. I downloaded One Click Root/Unroot, and from the download, took the "unroot.zip" package, downloaded to my phone (email to self, dropbox, etc), renamed it "update.zip", and "reinstalled packages" in Android Recovery.

Reroot, delete it with root power, unroot.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Most of the research I found said to reroot/delete/unroot, so I'll try that. Easiest method I think I have available is the update.zip packages from the One Click Root/Unroot program. Will update after work today when I get a chance. Thanks again!

Thanks!
Thanks to everyone. Rerooted, deleted the apk & unrooted again. Looks like I'll be venturing out in Denver's icepocalypse to AT&T/Best Buy to try for a replacement after all.
Oh, and +1 Trusello! I may be an unabashed noob, but I know a lot more than any AT&T rep I've come across.

Rooting your Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 write-up

The OTA 2.2.1 update made things complicated for Droid users who want to root and download non market apps. After several days, countless hours and trial and error, this is my little write up on how I rooted a Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 Build # FRG83D.
z4root no longer works and neither does the ability to download non market apps with 2.2.1. This is the easiest way to do it although there are other longer processes to root your phone which may have not been used on a 2.2.1 Moto Droid. I did a factory reset before I started but that is optional, let's begin.
*** Disclaimer ***
Please make a Nandroid or backup before this just incase.
1. Go to Motorolla's site and downloaded the Motorola 4.8.0 Driver with MotoConnect here. This program automatically downloads the driver your computer needs. This is a MUST. Lots of websites’ and write-ups forget or are vague on this easy step and it makes for a headache. Once downloaded, click on “Update Drivers” and click start. (You can download the driver file and wait for your Hardware Manager to pop up and go that route or just take the easy way and do this)
2. Download the latest version of Superoneclick and follow its directions on how to install it, you can find it here.
3. Connect your phone with your PC via USB. Make sure that USB debugging is ON. I removed my SD card to be on the safe side but if you choose not to, make sure you do not mount the SD card.
4. Open the Superoneclick program after un-zipping it, in Administrator mode. Follow the directions, there is even a video on how to do it. After your phone is rooted, click on " Allow non market apps ". Superuser should now be installed on your phone in your app's list.
*** The newest version of Superoneclick install BusyBox along with Superuser. Open your app drawer and look for these two. If both are there, you are done! If not, continue to step #5. ***
5. Disconnect your phone from your computer and restart your phone. It's not needed but, it's best to start with a fresh restart.
6. Go into your market from your phone, download Busybox ( free app ) and run it. Once installed, make sure within the app it states that your phone is rooted and the latest version of Busybox is displayed.
7. Restart your phone, this step is a must.
Your phone now has root access. You can download non market apps as well. I use Titanium Backup to remove bloat and such but you can use your favorite file manager.
Why the OTA 2.2.1 made things disfunctional, I don't know but this is my little solution and hope it helps.
I am going to give this a nice healthy bump since I have seen a couple Root confusion threads. I will be more then happy to answer any questions.
THANKS
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Working on a Droid 1 for the first time. This is just the info I needed! Thank you sir!
Not a problem! I actually find that a stock ROMed, rooted and cleaned up Droid 1 is just as quick as the ROMs available to download if not quicker.
Thanks!
Hi,
Wanted to say thanks! Your write up was concise, straightforward and easy to understand... The app worked just like it said it would and rooted my Droid (the original) 2.2.1 FRG83D like a charm!
The Tutorial was a god send as that clarified what to expect and how to react if something went "brown & lumpy".
Thanks and now off to make a backup before learning the other fun stuff!
Tried this, downloaded the driver PC sees the phone, check
DL and run superone click, Check
no busybox, download and install, says rooted, check
here's the problem, can't get into recovery can't do a nand before or after rooting. seems recovery can't see the sdcrad.
I tried to root my Droid 1 (2.2.1 FR83d) with super one click. Everything seemed to work. I got super user access, TI backup runs (mostly)
From Rom manager I installed Clockwork it said everything work but no recovery mode access (yellow triangle) After reading up here it was suggested to flash SPrecovery and then back to clockwork so I did that bot SP and clock work appeared to run fine but still no recovery mode.
Setcpu seems to be working superuser is working but I cannot make a backup of the phone (nand, ROM manager recovery both fail) TI can't uninstall factory apps, and dose not make a complete backup just apps and restores dose not do a complete restore.
It seems I have half a rooted phone. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just rooted my OG Droid. Thanks for the guide!
Edit: Just noticed that BusyBox didn't install with SuperOneClick, and that it is failing to install with the BusyBox installer app.
Edit: Okay, BusyBox installed. Backup created, ready for some ROMs!

For some reason my SU settings didn't pop up, and that caused the install to fail. The 2nd time around, it asked me for permission and it worked.
K I need help please. I used the rs4 lite guide to root the wife's phone ,that was successful, installed rom manager and did the clock mod flash now I can't get recovery, none , I installed busy box and still nothing lol, help I was gonna put cyan 7 on
I figured it out lol, just had to search the forums a bit more , running cyanogen 7 and is a sweet rom . Sry for being a noob . Thanks to all who came up the Rome and cracks y'all rock
Great walk through. Some of you might need another driver (ADB) for XP. They won't let me post the link but it's at Alldroid.
Worked flawlessly on my new 2.2.1 Droid 1, thanks!
Thank you very much for the post, helped me a lot for my rooting Droid / Roi as it is Verizon but I have with Iusacell in Mexico
This thread should be pinned.
My computer says your superoneclick is infected with a virus. Bummer for all the peeps that downloaded it already.......
Hey All,
This is going to be somewhat on and off topic.
I have jumped into the world of Android with both feet in the last few weeks.
So far I have obtained:
A Color nook which I have rooted using autonooter 3.0.0 running stock OS and also run Honeycomb off my SD card (until the real version comes out)
A Moto Backflip which I have rooted using rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin and is now running Unofficial CyanogenMod v6.1.2 (Froyo 2.2.1)
And Now I just bought a Droid with a dead battery, 16GB SDcard and a bad micro USB port for $25! (figured at $25 for a 16GB card it was worth the risk) I was able to "jump start" the battery and got it to power on. Its currently running 2.2.1 with build number FRG83D and is not rooted. Looks like the digitizer has a dead swath right down the middle.
Anyway, I can fix both things for <$30, so at $55 I still think I got a deal. Not too mention the fun of repairing and hacking it!
So my question:
I plan to use it for a little while before spending $$$ and making the repairs. But w/o a USB connector it does not seem that I can root my version.
Do I have any other options? keep in mind the current lack of ability to push things with ADB.
Super fast and easy. thank you so much!

CHALLENGE - Removing root WITHOUT USB connectivity

I have a refurb I897UCKB2 that I rooted and later lost USB connectivity. It is not drivers, pcs, or cables - I tried multiple and they all work for other Captivates. I have root explorer, titanium backup, etc working. I searched for files >1 and <60 days and found MANY in /system/xbin beyond the 3 that come on stock kb2. Can I safely use root explorer to delete them since it already has root access and is in memory? Will I be able to uninstall super-user after? What is the best process to remove roor traces without flashing via ODIN. I can transfer files wirelessly if that helps. Come on gurus... Who can figure out the best solution...

I will try that and report back. However, once the superuser app is gone I have no way to re-root without USB and I really doubt it will delete all those system files. I normally am willing to give anything a shot but I only have one chance to clean up before sending it back. I created a new thread to clearly show what I am up against and it is NOT a typical problem. There is no "automated" way that I can use (with high confidence) so I think a manual process makes sense in this case. I got no other feedback. I do appreciate your help - I just want to see if there are other options since it could easily wind up unrooted with no way to re-root and lots of trace files left over...

I highly doubt samsung will take the time to go through your returned phones file system to make sure you didn't root. If they did that to your phone they would do that with all of them, that is a waste of man hours thus a waste of money for them.
They will fix the usb, reflash/master clear it, then give it to another person...

Thanks - my only concern is that they could have automated the check. Run a program that generates a "checksum" of stock files that can't change without root and they would know immediately. You are probably right but what I listed would no be hard at all..

Disclaimer: I am still an android noob. Most of the information below is speculation based on what little i do know. Please flame accordingly
Some quick browsing came up with this link...
http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/170237-heres-how-you-unroot-your-captivate.html
The first post has a zip you can download to remove root. If you have the ability to sync files via network (such as dropbox) you can download the file to a PC and transfer it to your SD that way. Just replace the update.zip that you used to root the phone in the first place with the one you download through the link and run it through recovery mode.
(Note: you may be able to download it directly through the phone, haven't tried it so i dont know if it will work that way)
I do not know if this will remove any "trace" of the phone being rooted such as modified or extra files but it might be a good start..
If you want to do a full wipe such as ODIN (w/o cables) i think you can find the stock ROM somewhere that you could flash with CWM and then reflash the 2e recovery to cover up your tracks. Again, i dont know what specific traces, if any, this may leave on your phone as "evidence".
I dont have the specific links for the stock ROM or recovery but some googling should turn something up pretty quickly.
If you have Wifi access, search to the forum for the stock 2.2 cwm flashable. I've got that floating around on my PC somewhere. I used to use that when I would Odin to stock 2.1, the install CWM, then flash stock 2.2 on top. That would get rid of root.
Edit, Heh, just saw the last paragraph in the post above. Yeah, what he said.
I wiped it via factory reset
Thanks but I didn't use ODIN because there would be no way to get KB2. I eventually unrooted and then did a factory reset. The extra files were still there but I am sending it back the way it is.
Forgive me for being a noob here, but there is a app called Z4 root get the apk file install it and select unroot....!
it will uninstall superuser !

[Q] Droid 3 root/unroot question for experts

hey guys this is my first post. I have known about this website for a long time. i am a huge fan. I am having some trouble with my droid 3. I have used the v7 one click root and it worked like an absolute charm. i loved it. i highly recommend it for new d3 users. Only problem is my DA sister was messing with my phone right when the new update went out for them. lets just say.. she updated it. i had absolutely no idea until i tried to access root permissions and it did not work. i had titanium backup running too so my apps are frozen but my phone is not rooted anymore? i cant access anything. i tried to re-root my phone but it says adb is not recognized as an internal or external command or something like that. I dont know if i have to reset my entire phone? or what. Ive tried everything and nothing is working. If this is not the proper forum to ask this question i apologize ahead for this is my first forum like i said. I have absolutely no idea what to do. i am very stuck. Anything can help guys thank you.
if you had so any apps frozen I'm surprised the update went through. Lol the one click root should work for you though. I guess if you've tried everything an sbf with the .890 file is guaranteed to solve your problems and you will be able to reroot just as you've done before. Just check if your drivers are still a-ok

thanks
i re-installed new drivers even tho i was pretty sure mine were all set. but instead of opening up the easy root v7 out of winrar directly i extracted it to the desktop then ran it then it worked? lol so i am very confused. but it works now thank you for your help.

[Q] Signed samsung zip

Hi. I have been trying to find an solution to my problem for 3 days. I have looked all over here and the rest of the internet. I believe what I need is an update zip file that will pass the standard e3 recovery.
I have downloaded several zips already(a couple from here), that say they are the stock samsung firmwares, but everytime I put it on an sd, then try to apply the update with it, in the e3 recovey I get E: signature verification failed.
I got to this point by trying to apply the OTA update. ( ok, you can all throw rotten food at me now). I thought I was safe as I didn't have any custom firmware on there. I had, however gained root access. The update went fine and seemed to work, then it finished and tried to reboot, only to get stuck on the samsung logo for over an hour before I decided it had gone wrong and panicked.
The usual ways of fixing I know about are odin, heimdall, adb. None of these are working. I think it's my computer being too old. Odin doesn't detect, Heimdall sees there is a device there but has problems connecting to it. adb will only see it in the e3 recovery mode and not in odin mode and even then because it doesn't seem to be root anymore it can't really do much.
I am open to suggestions on how to get something to work. My thoughts are that I just need a gingerbread rom that has some samsung siigning on that I can put on an sd and use that in E3 to flash from there. I can then work from there if that works. Feel free to laugh and point and tell me that's not gonna work, but if you know a way that will work I would be very grateful.
Thank you for listening and I hope someone can help.
Open kies, do the connection troubleshooting to reinstall device drivers.
Then follow path of flashing stock with PC Odin with pit file. See dr Ketans thread in sticky section of development for path.

thanks for getting back so soon. I have had kies up on the screen actually. It's been trying to connect for about 3 hours now lol.
I did the troubleshoot thing earlier where it reinstalled drivers. Restarted pc but same. Won't actually connect in either odin mode or recovery.I'm pretty sure it's a pc issue, at least partly anyway, but don't have anything else to try it on.
Is the signed zip idea a definite no go?
Not sure about zip,
Close Kies, open pc odin,
Gp into download mode, connect phone, confirm downloadmode with volume up and try tp flash
Let me know how that goes

No Odin pc refuses to recognise there is anything attached. I'mgiving up for the night now anyway. thank you for looking in. I'll try again in the morning. I might have to buy a new pc before I can get this thing to work.
Connect the usb to back port, sometimes helps with connection. Use stock usb cable.
please hit thanks if i helped
thanks but I've tried all the basics, but if it would help I'd stick a wire up my nose, so it's all helpful. It could be something simple I just forgot.
PC specs? Is it a Mac maybe? Reboot phone and PC and use another cable. Download latest kies and update it restart PC and then connect the phone.

Umm, did you wipe after the flash?
1. A data wipe will, in all probability, solve the bootloop after the upgrade from GB to ICS.
2. A data wipe on an ICS kernel CAN result in a hardbrick, as I'm sure you must have noticed, on the forums.
I'd say wipe it. The bricks are not all that common. Just this once. I faced a similar situation, and I KNEW the thing would boot after a wipe, so I just crossed my fingers and did it. All went well.
By they way, what do you mean by e3 recovery? I've been assuming stock.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
the PC is a 7-8 year old laptop. Our desktop died a few months ago and we've not really had the spare cash to replace it yet. The desktop was even older and was a real pain. The technical gremlins have really infested my house.
I don't really want to wipe the data, as I could just send off to samsung repair as a last resort. I really want my pictures and data back. Got some of my 2 and half month old daughter on there that I haven't got backed up anywhere else. (yes I'm looking dumber with every post). My next thing to try I guess is see if I can borrow my sister in laws PC for a few hours or something. That is if if cannot find a rom that the recovery will accept to put on my sd.
yes -the e3 recovery s the stock one.
Feel for ya.... if you can enter stock recovery then the connection problem most likely lies either with the cable and port or drivers being out of date
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
almost positive it's my knackered computer that won't let me do anything. Still can't believe that a rom doesn't exist with samsung signing, somewhere in the world. What is the point of having a standard recovery at all if you can't use it to recover stuff?
I need to be borrow or steal the use of someones computer now I think. I'll keep an eye on this thread incase someone knows of a signed zip file, and I will report of any news incase someone else has the same problems and wants to fix it without sending to Samsung so they can keep their data.

I understand the reluctance.
Although, the pictures would survive the wipe, as they would be in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera. A wipe wouldn't affect anything in /sdcard, although, you'd lose your contacts if they aren't backed up. Your best bet would be to borrow someone's computer for a while.
thanks for all the advice.
Finally found a zip that the e3 recovery thinks is signed.
It was the 2.3.6 gingerbread, uk cpw one.
It seems to pass the signing check and then it looks like it's doing domething for a few minutes, then nothing seems to happen afterwards. just stays in recovery. If I do it a few times in a row it will sometimes think for longer, then reboot itself like it has all worked, but then get stuck at the samsung logo again.
Can I ask, what exactly is getting wiped then? Just the main android folders and not the sdcard folder? Is that for definite?
Yes. Just the android partition should get wiped, internal SD should remain intact.
Try taking out the battery for five minutes or so before powering on again. Sometimes after flashing the rom needs a breather to "settle".
Sent from my Paranoid Android GT-N7000. It doesn't get much better than this!
Just an update on my situation. I finally managed to get use of another computer and got it to work properly, so managed to flash the stock ICS rom through odin.
Thanks a lot Samsung for forcing me to put the yellow triangle on my device. At least there are people willing to help with fixing mobile phones' software, even if the manufacturers themselves don't care about you losing all your data. I managed to get everything back. Nothing was lost. If only they allowed you to flash the stock rom from their stock recovery. It's ridiculous that it doesn't.
Anyway there is the triangle away app for that I suppose and now I might try some new roms out to see which I prefer.
Yeah you would have to make a flashable zip. Not sure how to do that.
Good you are back

Well I wanted to use some of my apps such as PokemonGO, and with the root it wouldnt let me. I read on this site that deleting 3rd party apps and then signing into the apps would work. They made it seem like all I had to do was redownload SuperSu. However all the rooted apps are gone and a lot of other files are gone, and I still cannot use the PokemonGo app. I cant seem to flash the zip file that everyone says to do. When I try to open SuperSU it says it root undetected, but my bootloader still says custom and when I reboot in recovery it says custom. Also rootchecker says that I am not rooted. I just want to get my phone working either with the original software, or rooting all over again.

How on earth did you delete the Play store when trying to remove third party apps?
Anyway... I'd nuke the phone and start from scratch. Have you searched through your device's forum for advice? Feels like the more appropriate place to go... Good luck.

Your phone did that by itself? Seems unlikely...
And that doesn't sound like a factory reset, it sounds like compete wipe.
Like I said, go to your device's forum, find the stock firmware (here's one guide) or a custom ROM and flash it to your device. If you need further advice, those forums is the place to go...
