[Q] Nook Color = My new laptop - Nook Color General

Im thinking of getting this and using it to replace my netbook. Does anybody know if I can hook up a bluetooth mouse and keyboard? Has anybody tried this or have any thoughts?

No, not yet anyway. Bluetooth doesn't work with the NC, although there has been some development work in progress to enable bluetooth, as it seems to be built in, just disabled.

Haha I actually bought my nook as a replacement for my netbook .
I don't use a mouse or keyboard (You can't, as far as I know), but it seems to be serving its purpose fairly well.

you can always add in a stylus as well.
check out this thread, i think theyre talking about different ones that would work on the nook color.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896838

I'm actually on my way back to the netbook at this point. I just can't get text down quick enough on this device.

I use a netbook as my primary computer.
In no way can the Nook replace it.
The Nook is my fooling around device, and my only android device.

The nook color in my opinion is a great netbook replacement. A netbook's main purpose is to be light, small and look stuff up online easily, all things the nook color excels at. It can play music, load youtube (if using eclair) and use most of google's (online) apps. Also rooted dolphin works pretty well as a desktop web-browser.

personally i have a laptop, used for multi tasking, video editing, watching 1080p movies but i recently bought the Nook Color and planning on rooting it. the Uses of the Nook Color would be browsing the internet , playing games on the go.
I also ordered the Notion Ink Adam which i am also planning to use but it is much more powerful than the Nook Colo so ill see which one i prefer

I bought the nook color to replace my netbook as well but I do have a real laptop as well. I was primarily using my old eeepc for reading since I bought my normal laptop, a Toshiba protégé R705, which I also love by the way, so the nookColor made sence. I don't think I could use the nookcolor as my only computer.

Poor man's Ipad/Netbook...
I use my Nook Color almost just like a netbook. Rooted and optimized, it performs almost all the same functions I need in a netbook. I read on it, I study with it, browse the internet with it, check email, etc, etc, etc. That said, the Nook Color will never replace a computer with a real keyboard. If I have to type anything greater than an email, I switch to the nearest desktop at my university's library.
All things considered, the Nook Color provides almost all of the functions that the Ipad or a netbook does, but at less than half the price. That's a steal!

I'd love to replace carrying a laptop with the nook for school. I went from a dell 700m to an aspire one and found a huge difference in back pain after a day. Now I'm carrying the cr48 but that will cut down a lot if I could use a bt keyboard with the nook. Hopefully the hardcore XDA devs will make a breakthrough on it before too long. Without a keyboard, you just can't input data fast enough.

After I got my NC I planned on keeping my netbook. But after using it for 2 days, I didn't touch it. So I sold it. Haven't looked back. Oh and for flash I use Skyfire. Works fine for me.

I still have a use for my CR-48, at least at this point. The nook doesn't work quite well enough and isn't quite powerful enough for netbook use. Perhaps once bluetooth is working in ubuntu I can replace my laptop, but not until then.

The Nook is currently acting as my computer when I prefer to be away from my main laptop. After working all day in IT, sometimes the last thing I want is staring at the computer when I come home. The Nook is perfect for checking Reddit, my e-mail, playing a few games, accessing my music collection via Subsonic, and catching up on my reading. Perfect 2nd computer!

The Nook is a great media CONSUMPTION device. I think I would never use it as a netbook replacement. Trying to use an onscreen keyboard to type out anything of any length is just painful.

I really like thumbkeyboard to type on, but still it can't compare to a full size laptop keyboard for me

I love my nook! Use it all the time, oddly enough a fair percentage for actually reading B&N e-books. It could never replace my Dell Mini 10 netbook, though, for one very simple reason. I chose a netbook that still had an ethernet port on purpose, but ethernet connectivity simply does *not* exist on any android devices that i'm aware.
I use my netbook to test ethernet connections at work (I'm in IT), and I could never do that with nook unless it had a working ethernet dongle.

laptop or desktop???

whats up everybody?! i supposed to be getting money back from school from my pell grant and hopefully i will have enough to get me a new laptop or desktop. im a little confused on which one i should buy...which will be the better option and why?? hopefully i will get around $700
Laptop - more flexibilty.
PC - can't take it anywhere.
What do you want to do with it??
Gaming? buy a desktop
You want Ergonomic? buy a desktop
Acces your stuff everywere? buy a laptop
Overloaded pretty much said it had a laptop then realised it never left my desk so bought a desktop much cheaper than a laptop and no where near the spec. If you do get a desktop look into self building it, even today its much cheaper and not that scary for a first timer.
You just need to work out what you do with it.
yeah gaming == desktop
otherwise laptop even if one likes
a big screen and keyboard and mouse
it's easy to connect to the laptop when places at the work desk
is this a good deal for a pc?
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-PAVILION-ELITE-M9417C-AMD-QUAD-CORE-PROCESSOR-9550_W0QQitemZ290346024672QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDesktop_PCs?hash=item4399f8bee0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Depends on what your gonna do. If most of the time you are stationary, then a desktop is the way to go but if your always moving (not at home) then a laptop is the best choice.
+1 for laptop
well when im on the computer all i do is browse the net, save and edit pics and videos and burn cd's and dvd's. i was leaning towards getting a refurbed Hp DV7z for $579 but i realized that the warranty is only for three months so now im looking at the DV6z directly from HP....is that a better decision for less computer?
Both are good, but if you've got a WM device you can easily take a lot of docs and other files with you in place of a laptop. But if you need to do a lot of work/school realted things on the go, laptop is the best, if not get a PC.
Hi buddy
If money does not matter then I would go go for laptop. But it also depends on your use.I mean you want to put it on one particular place Or just buying for the game then go for desktop
i dont game at all
Desktop!!!!
Its more powerfull, less hot, much more customizable!!!
I have a desktop PC -- 13 tabs open in opera, WMP playing music, skype, utorent, and a pc game which is on pause + lots of more progs open!!! can a laptop, which costs below 1000$, do that? - NO!!!
if you want portability + power!!! get a laptop which costs about 3000$ or more!!! or get a Desktop and a Windows Mobile Device!!!
So not a gamer that can cut down cost alot $700 going to try and convert this to what in UK could purchase?
A cheap desktop ex catalogue, ex business p4.
A laptop portable net book Eeepc 701 4G "not easy to use when first purchased due to sceen size but soon get used to it"
Now you have best of both worlds a permanent set up "that you could upgrade RAM GPU etc" and a diddy laptop to take everywhere with you
Lap top!
Toshiba
Eee
Dell
as said earlier Desktop- for more power or Laptop- for more portability! Though newer higher-end laptops can almost match desktop power, they mostly cost alot more and you can get lower-end desktops real cheap nowadays aswel. But in the end, in my opinion, laptop would give more ease and satisfaction! You cld get a decent one in on your bugdet!
Do you live at one place most of the time? If yes, get a PC. If you move around a lot, get a laptop.
OR
Get a PC and a smarphone.
Do not get anything that is below laptop level - netbooks, smartbooks, tablets, umpcs, mids, etc. They all suck if you don't have a primary machine like a desktop or a laptop.
Cheers.
It depends on what you do.
Laptop is convinient and you can take it to anywhere. But if you always play games or watch movies you'd better get a desktop.
Laptops can do anything including being docked as a desktop!

maybe, BUT a laptop which costs about 700$ CANT !!!
can it play crysis - NO
can it do some massive visualisation - NO
can it handle 20 pages opened in Opera browser + windows media player + a game running in background - NO
but of course there are possitive aspects of it like:
Can you sit with it, in a lap on our bed - YES
Can you sit with it in a bus stop, with a hope that someone wont gop-stop (steal ) it from you - YES

Three's Company NOOK Color, TouchPad, and PC

Life together for each of the devices. This is a thread to discuss how to use the nook, touchPad, and PC together. Here we can point out each of these strength and weakness. Plus how we use them to complement each other. I really like have a 7" and 10" pad that in both cases is impossible to brick. At the current price points it is nice to have both if you are lucky enough to find the touchPad.
In the short time that I have owned the touchPad, I have found it nice to use all three of them. I thought it we be nice to have a thread to discuss how we use these together and what each of them strengths and weakness are.
First use was the PC to find the touchPad in stock. Not easy, but on my third attempt the PC located a Best Buy with one and I was lucky enough to get it.
PC stutters, nook to the rescue. I am on vacation at my son's. He has no wifi but outside his apartments there was a public spot available. I used the nook browser to display information that was needed for the initial setup.
TouchPad helps get thread started. My Bluetooth keyboard is always disconnecting with my nook. I have to continually press the connect button on it to type after it goes to sleep. Motorola same Bluetooth keyboard works fine with the Touchpad. At home I would just have switched the nook to a USB host keyboard and used the XDA app to type.
NOOK Color
The nook with CM7 is way more polished and has way more apps. If I really have to get some work done on the road, I use it. Big brother is there to help the TouchPad when it needs it.
TouchPad
I like the big screen for many things. I like how the Bluetooth keyboard works, but when I attempted to use the Bluetooth mouse, no love. Back to using my stylus.
PC
We really need the old guy to assist with its two roommates. Could not use either without its help.
I'm in the same boat. I use the touchpad the most now. I love how snappy and responsive webOS is and the browser is miles ahead of the gingerbread browser. Every once in a while I jump back to my nook if I want to do some reading or play words with friends, but for the most part I find the full web browsing experience on the touchpad to be exactly what I need. The video playback is also miles ahead, but I don't tend to watch videos on tablets that much. I still prefer the 7" screen for reading and the smaller size makes thumb typing insanely easier on the nook. The Nook is the one I'll take out of the house with me, as the touchpad is too big and heavy, and the nook has a lot more apps to keep me busy when there's no internet connection available.
Try to keep the thread rich but
1. I don't have a TouchPad. Where do you find apps (both paid and free) for webOS?
2. What is PC? Personal Computer? PC running Windows 7? PC stutters???

[Q] Can I use my TP as a second monitor?

As the title states, I'm looking for a way to use it as a second/extended display, preferably through USB. I don't want mouse/keyboard functionality, all I'm looking for is a second display. I've tried iDisplay, Air display, Teamviewer, RDP, ScreenSlider, and VNC. All are laggy/buggy, and cannot be used as a second/extended display. If anyone knows of a way to do this, could you please point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Are you meaning a duplicated display (so it shows the same on both) or an extended display ?
I use Splashtop Remote (and Splashtop Remote HD), and if I'm on the local LAN, I can actually use it to duplicate what is on either of my two main monitors with a split-second of lag, which actually is enough to use it for displaying Star Wars: The Old Republic instead of relying completely on the main monitor. Now, it's not perfect, but it is a good alternative for when you're local. If you're doing anything remotely - such as you're out in the field / friend's place, and you wanna access your PC from there, it works great, too - but the lag is a lot more. I use it to access my seed-box and check my linux seeds, as well as keep track of my invoicing for my job.
So that's my suggestion - give it a shot. It was a FAotD at Amazon a few months ago, which is why I snagged it. Grabbed the HD version from the Market a couple weeks ago, and they both are pretty good.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm looking for an extended display. I'll still look into this though.
Have you tried iDisplay, or AirDisplay? They arent free but they should do the trick.

iDisplay is too laggy for practical use and AirDisplay is full of bugs.
It looks like those are going to be my only choices. Oh well
If you have a second display already plugged in, but don't want to use it for some odd reason, then you could use Splashtop, as it'll work for displaying. But you have to have the second there already, so that kinda negates that.
Sorry mate. No other ideas at the moment.

This looks to be the closest to what your asking for, but still in early stages.. I use Synergy at work to use an iMac as a second display, works well. My current setup has a Windows 7 notebook in the middle, 23" display left and 20" iMac right. My Touchpad sits just below the notebook in its Touchstone charger. Tomorrow I'll give this a try and I'll let you know how it works.

Thanks for all the replies guys!
I just decided to shell out the extra bucks for a real monitor lol. Though I was kinda interested in a couple of these remote desktop clients's.

Well, got it to "work", but not really usable yet. Cursor wasn't visible, jumped around alot, keyboard mapping had many issues. Also, once the app started, the only way I could get soft keyboard back was to reboot. When I have time later maybe I'll look into helping debug it.

Making the most of bluetooth - the pc connection

So I have xt894 running cm12. I have a windows 7 pc.
What do I need to do to be doing what I could be doing?
Please open my eyes.
Sent from my XT894 using Tapatalk
What is it you expect that you could be doing? :v
The last I checked, CM12 - PC works fine over bluetooth, though you'll need a decent bluetooth adapter (that comes with its own software), as Windows' bluetooth stack doesn't seem to like the $0.99 CSR-based adapters you can buy off eBay.
Alternatively, I guess you could buy a copy of Bluesoleil, since it replaces the Windows stack and makes said cheap adapters properly functional. Might be expensive, though.
i would like to have my pc lock when i walk away.
i would like music on my phone to be played on my computer speakers while within range.
I want my droid 4 to act as a mouse and keyboard.
I want it to be connected to multiple bluetooth enabled computers/devices and be able to select which device to output to using a menu on the droid.
games on my phone with a controller, in addition to other features yet thought of.
Ultimately, this is a very functional device.
have a great day.
thank you for your well formed replies.
Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy with work this week.
I'm not personally familiar with any programs that do this, but it looks like this is what you're looking for.
To pipe music through to your speakers, you'll need an adapter that supports A2DP, or more ideally for sound quality, aptX. I would guess even the cheap adapters support A2DP, since it's older. The Windows bluetooth stack doesn't appear to offer any audio functionality with cheap CSR-based adapters (which more dollar ebay adapters are), but they might be A2DP-capable at least.
Even with the Windows bluetooth stack, you can use your phone as a keyboard/mouse. I used AndroMouse for this purpose a while back, and it (mostly) worked, but there are many apps that should work as well. Most if not all will require you to install a client program on your PC and run it whenever you want to connect.
As with the above, even the Windows stack allows using your phone as a controller; they all use the common Remote Control bluetooth profile. I tried out Ultimate Gamepad, and it seemed to work fine. I only tried playing a Gameboy game with it though, I'm not sure about its responsiveness for more demanding games...
If you shop a bit on ebay, some adapters include a disc with an older version of Bluesoleil, and others might come with a copy of CSR Harmony (they'll have a disc labeled "CSR 4.0" pictured, which could be anything really). If you're willing to spend $10 or so, you can usually find a few listings with adapters by IOGEAR, Insignia, etc other house brands which possibly have up-to-date software you can grab off their sites.
Cheaper than outright buying Bluesoleil, anyway.

Use Nexus 7 as a remote desktop machine

Hello Everyone,
First post here ! I've been reading a lot of very interesting things around here but I find myself stuck, hence this new thread (no ****, sherlock). I've been looking around on Google and here but couldn't really find what I was looking for so here I am.
First of all, a bit of context so that you get what I'm trying to achieve. I have a very old computer that I use for gaming. I'm not a hardcore gamers looking to play in 4K 360FPS and not part of the PC Master race by any means. With that said, I'm still looking at 1080p 60fps as my goal. And amazingly enough, my old PC allows me to do that. In fact, despite its age, my PC runs fairly well. So well that I don't feel the need to spend money to change it (plus money is tight). So, playing on my PC is actually great, can't complain there. However, I also enjoy playing in the living room. I actually play more with a controller in "console" mode than sitting at my desk. If my PC was close to the TV, the problem would be easily solved. As it's not the case I have to rely on other solutions.
I have a nvidia shield TV and tried Gamestream and Steam Link. Both are unfortunately dependent on my local network quality. Considering I'm using powerlines to connect my PC to the router, the quality is sometime unstable which doesn't meet my requirements. As stated previously, my PC is OLD and I don't think it's powerful enough to run and stream the game with a decent output either. So old hardware and unstable local network = bad experience in game streaming. And this is where I'm trying to achieve the contrary then what everyone is doing : people are streaming there games to their living room, I plan do the opposite.
I have a Nexus 7 sitting in a drawer somewhere that I don't use anymore. I was thinking of the following setup :
- Move my computer to the living room and plug it to the TV --> enjoy good gaming performance right in the leaving room
- Use my Nexus 7 in my office using remote desktop app --> less heavy than gaming, I should be able to work on Word, Excel, browse the web. Basically, use my PC for computing stuff via remote desktop with little to no delay.
- My office would actually look cleaner as well with a very minimalistic setup ^^
Problem :
- Is there a way to connect the Nexus 7 to a monitor using HDMI;
- Keep the Nexus 7 charged;
- And connect a keyboard and mouse to the Nexus via USB ? Or BT is the way to go ?
- Could this be achieved more easily with a Chromecast ? If yes, how should i proceed ?
- Would using the computer for everything else than gaming be OK in that configuration ?
It looks like a fun project to try. However, if it proves to be impossible or if you think the performance would be too poor to be usable, than I'll think about building another cheap PC (I have an old I5 760 lying around) : 1 for gaming and 1 for office stuff.
Is the Nexus 7 the 2012 or 2013 variety? From what I can find, the 2012 does NOT have a slimport USB but the 2013 DOES. In which case, buying the right cable should let you connect it directly to a monitor.
If you have the 2012 version... I can't give a true recommendation since I've never tried this, but if you do end up going the chromecast-attached-to-a-monitor/tv route, I would use Chrome to cast the desktop (apparently you can do this) to the chromecast instead of casting from your tablet. Meaning, don't cast your remote desktop from the tablet to the TV, use the tablet to remotely cast your desktop to the chromecast. Hopefully that's clear. The amount of lag from casting a remote desktop would probably make it unusable.
Hello,
I have the 2013 model so yes, with the right adapter I should be able to connect it to a monitor. Now There is still the issue of using a KB and mouse with it while keeping the tablet charged (the battery drains quite fast when casting). Maybe that's too much to handle for a tablet ^^

Looks like I learned something today ! Didn't even know they made a dedicated dock for the Nexus 7 tablet ! looks this little device could actually help me solve my problem. I'll look into it in more depths.
I actually use wireless charging but can't actually put it on my current tablet stand (or else it looks messy as hell)
Thanks for the great tips !
