Battery Icon - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I change the battery icon in the notification bar? I have a Captivate with 2.2 and rooted.

Yes you can... search the forums for framework-res.apk you can modify that to put the icon you want... make sure you replace files within your ROMS framework-res.apk else you will get into trouble!!

Thanks, I will see if I can do this.

And don't forget to back up the original framework-res.apk so if you mess something up you can push the original back and all will be well.

Check out this site. circle.glx.nl I've used it a number of times to make battery icon changes. Only requirement is that you do NOT have a highly customized framework-res.apk You can also add your own boot animations. The rest of the kitchen isn't usable for our phones though. It's pretty straightforward.

If the theme is properly created it should still work in the UOT kitchen.

I was hoping after rooting I could change the battery icon easily, but I noticed the note about not working with stock "odexed" roms... which I run. Does anyone have info on how to de-odex the framework-res.apk so that I could just replace the battery icon?
It's literally the only mod I'm really interested in doing since I hate how (even in pics of 2.3) they don't show the battery % which I would think to be a very basic feature people would want!

On my rooted captivate on Rogers 2.2 I did install a battery icon change appt now the phone turns into an vibrator and black screen, any help to bring it back to life.

Do you have a back up of the original framework-res.apk ???

I have backup all my apps a couple days ago through titanium but now I can't even access to my phone v my pc.

If you would go through adding this, then why don't you pick a new ROM that has it included? Cog v3.04 has it on my phone, and my guess is that it is just as easy to flash a new ROM as it is to change up your battery icon. PLUS...you get the benefits of a new ROM too! Just my two cents.....

In my past experience with custom ROMs, it seems that the developers like to toss in too much of their own "personal taste" that I usually don't like. I rather like the setup of the stock Rogers ROM I'm using - I just wish they'd upgrade to 2.3 or whatever the current version is now.
I will admit, the more time it takes before any news of Rogers updating this phone, the more appealing looking in to custom ROMs is becoming.
Besides, going with a new rom containing the mods I'm interested in doesn't help me learn how to do them myself ;P

is there any update on this? does anyone know how to do it and want to help me out? so basically i went back to stock rooted 2.2 kb1 and now i just want to change the battery icon.

the UOT kitchen will work with 2.2 stock. I have tried it.
http://uot.dakra.lt/
you will need something like Root Explorer to extract the framework-res file then it will work.

Dont use the TWFramwork-res.apk. You should be using a file called framework-res.apk.
Should be the framework-res.apk in the system/framework/framewwork. When you go to the kitchen, choose your battery mod. If you do a custom design, make sure you click "generate preview" to make sure it's what you want. remember you can change the colors of the battery mod near the bottom.
You can upload the file on the File Upload tab. click system files, and upload it using the first option. I tried doing a boot animation on stock 2.2 but I couldn't get it to work. I just used the battery mod for stock. I also did NOT change any of the options on the file upload page, and it worked fine.
When done with editing the battery options and uploading file, click summary tab at far right. It will show the options you chose. If anything is highlighted red, there are errors.
When you submit it, it will give you your order number and tell you to go to the pickup page. When your order shows up on that page, just download the zip, and install it though ClockWorkMod. If you don't have CWM, you will need it, obviouosly. Find it on the forums if you dont have it. And if you're on 2.2 without CWM, then you will need to read about getting past 3e recovery so you can install zips through recovery. If you're not famiiliar with all this, it will be a little confusing at first.
Hope this helps.

I havent tried all of the battery choices, but if it works with one, it should work with all of them.

IMPORTANT: remember to save a copy of your original framework-res.apk incase something goes wrong with the custome ones.

Updated uot
in the updated UOT kitchen it says it supports touchwiz based roms....should i upload framework.apk and twframework.apk?

Help combining framework apks

What I am trying to do (on DC v1.1b5) is combine 3 (or more) signed zips (espresso, clear notification bar, and a taskbar) into an unzipped rom so I can sign it later and flash the whole rom with my changes. (NO I'M NOT GOING TO POST IT AND SAY ITS MY ROM lol)
All of these modifications each change framework-res.apk and com.htc.resources.apk in their own way.
Would I have to figure out every single change to each individual apk and merge them into one file? Or is there another way?
I am not only doing this for my phone, but I am doing this to learn.
Any help would be appreciated
Yes, since there's really no way to tell which files were edited in each theme, you have to go through and find it.
Honestly, the easiest way to do this that I've found is to unzip the archive and scroll through the folders with thumbnails enabled so you can quickly see what they all look like.
I know that the statusbar .pngs are in framework-res.apk/res/drawable-mdpi and they all start with statusbar_* or status_bar*.
The .pngs for the Rosie are found in com.htc.resources.apk/res/drawable-port-mdpi/
EDIT: I would also recommend creating a MetaMorph theme when you get all the files you need. (I'm not sure if it works on 2.1/Sense ROMs, I'm about to use it and find out though) that way you can apply the themes while your phone is on, you can easily transfer it between ROMs, and you only need to use the files that you've changed, instead of the entire .apk. For instructions on creating a MetaMorph theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329
on windows 7 you can make one folder called NEWframeworkapk paste all the original file to it, then copy and paste all the files from the others. it will say "do you wish to move and replace "jpg" say yes for all and then you have the changed files.
haha thats what i do? prolly some super easy way though.

I actually prefer MetaMorph over doing a zip file because all you need are the files that have been changed. However, in 2.1 a lot of files are scattered around or in different places and once the Sprint update comes through who knows where everything will be. Once I finally figured out how to set up the folders the rest I have done became easy...and no need to turn off your phone.
Edit: You can also combine more than one folder at a time

As I said before it got lost in the forum crash, I'm pretty sure you just need to copy files from the Captivate version (thread 756627) or original Desire version (thread 756627) into the Fascinate's framework-res.apk and then reinstall that. Will work on it when my phone arrives.

nah already tried that... you have to exit the .xml to update that there is new images for the battery too.... we need an xml person, i promise.
Hello,
I too was interested in this mod so I went ahead and ported it to the Fascinate.
My framework-res.apk is from dh12 I am unsure if this works with the update. There is a readme in the zip file that explains how to install. This is not an update.zip you must push my framework-res.apk using adb or some other method.
I take no responsibility if you brick your phone with this. Make a backup and follow the directions in the readme file. It seems to work ok on my phone, but I'm not going to sit there and watch it drain every percentage point
I take no credit for this I just modified what I found on the OP's linked thread. What I implemented was the battery with the number inside, but you can use any of the other types by replacing the pngs in my framework-res.apk with 7-zip.
If there are any problems let me know.
Enjoy.

Excellent, yea that framework should work, I have switched from both systems without doing the full update and my phone has been fine.
May I ask the names of the xmls you edited, so I can manually pull them, I don't want to retheme the whole framework-res lol.
EDIT: Nevermind just downloaded and saw that you included the files you edited separately too.
My hero right here!! I'm going to have some fun with themes now!! Lol

I will be working with this tonight and hopefully coming out with a flashable version as well..
Yes implementing this into my remix nextheme as we speak.
Problem is I am making each image one by one lol.
What did you use to decompile and rebuild your apk? I'm just getting android developement/themeing and I noticed there seem to be a couple tools.
Thanks,
Dan
It doesn't seem to change the battery charge images...
(Working on this)
Yeah I keep changing the images and try to put them in a update.zip but I fail.. it doesn't keep up with the actual charge of the battery.
I used apk manager 4.9. You will need to get adb and java for it to work. Also I can't get this program to push the modded apks, but I just do it manually. The program is nice because it kind of guides you through what you need to do.
Also I did not modify the charge icons just the battery drain.

Is apk manager's advice that you don't sign system apks correct?

Thanks - I had seen that but was just apkTool 1.2. I have been using adb and have been successful in making some small tweaks to verify what I am doing.
Regarding signing - it was my understanding that the apks should always be signed to ensure the system doesn't run into problems. I have not proofed how not signing effects things or if there are any side effects to now signing or if an app looks for a specific signature.

You don't want to sign the system apks. It is my understanding that it somehow reuses the old signature. This is what is nice about Apk Manager as it will prompt you with this information so you don't have to guess when you are first learning. It also nicely organizes your projects and allows you to easily zip everything back up.
It also has a nice feature when recompiling a system apk to allow you to copy files from the original apk if unmodified (you delete what you have changed from a directory it created). I needed to do this because when I was first modifying framework-res.apk I would get a blank screen when rebooting my phone. When I had apk manager keep most of the old files it worked perfectly, so if you are having problems with modded xml files try using this feature. It will prompt you when you are recompiling the apk.
Sorry to turn this into the noob apk packaging thread, but I am new to this as well and am happy to share what I've picked up to save any other people some time.

[Q] rom porting question

Alright....I've tried searching and searching but I can't find exactly what I need. I'm wanting to try to port blue echo to cm6.1. Now I'm still a little new at this but I've learned how to smali and baksmali, use flashboot, sdk, sign zips, create flashable zips, zip align, optimize, pretty much all the ends and outs of the basic. I've only been at this 4 months but I love android and want to learn to become a dev. Now I'm trying to learn how to theme roms. There are a million guides that I've found but now will tell me how to do this . Could someone point in the right direction to a thread explaining how to port a sense theme to cm6.1. Ive tried replacing the images in the drawables folders from framework-res . Repackaged zip aligned optimized signed and flashed. Nothing took. So I opened the zip all the images had copied over in the cm6 rom zip. So I wiped and flashed the modded zip it still reverts to the original framework of cm6. I don't understand how that is. I need a way to just copy the colors and images. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or know of a how to with just the steps .I already have all the programs on my pc.

Simplest way, if you just want the icons, pics and notification bar things is to use 7zip for PC. Don't extract the theme, just open it. Navigate to the framework-res.apk file of the new ROM you want the theme to work on, open but don't extract, copy all the .png files from the theme into the ROM or new theme you are making. It will ask you to replace, obviously you say "yes" When you are done, just close it all back up, no recompressing or signing needed because you didn't extract anything. Just put it on your SD card and it will flash.
Let me know if you need more help. This by and large the simplest method for making minor edits to a theme.
Download the CyanogenSense theme by mrinehart93 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723224
It's a working Sense-looking theme on CM6. Download it, unzip it on your PC, pick it apart, etc. to see how he changed and compiled it to make it work. Hopefully that will help you figure out how to do what you want to do. Good luck.

I did this but had to flash clockword because i was using ra, it wasn't verifying the update. So i turned off signature verification. But I'm using firerat mtd and forgot that i have to repatch the clockword for this so I did'nt really get to see if it worked yet. But thanks all of you responding I appreciate it. Ill let you know if these methods work.
I fixed the prob. Did everything suggested by copying the png's between the zips without extracting them. Even doubled checked all the png's everything looked like it was a go . But I only got 3 of my new icons. Everything else was still stock cm6 even the notification bar was stock. Do I got to do more than just transfer the png's cause it seems like maybe the xml's are reverting them back to stock?

[REQ] [froyo] BLACK/TRANSPARENT notification pull down bar

Searched and couldn't find just this...a black notification pull down. I think I am one of the few that likes the stock look just want a black/ transparent pulldown and don't want a whole new theme to get it. I am running dl30 BTW. I KNOW THAERE ALOT OF REQUEST BUT HOPEFULLY MINE IS EASY TO FULL FILL WITH A COUPLE OF OPTIONS TO ADD AS A ZIP FOR THOSE THAT LIKE A SEMI-STOCK LOOK. HOPE TO SEE A COUPLE SOON.
THANKS IN ADVANCE
A little FYI...I really like the midnight pulldown and buttons....many others are nice as well..
This can be done by modifying the png images in the framework i believe. If you use 7zip to extract it and then edit with photoshop or gimp and save the png and put back into the framework file.
If i am wrong somebody can correct me though.
bump....seems easy but I am an idiot with this phone?!?
I want it also
I pulled out the files and changed everything and put it back into the apk file. When I put it back on my phone I didnt get any changes. I thought I read that if your only changeing pics, this is all that was needed.
I posted asking if there was something I was missing but no answer.
I have the changes if I could get the phone to take them.

Attach your framework-res.apk & twframework-res.apk and let me look at it. It will be hard to give an accurate explanation without first doing this.
EDIT: Or do what nitsuj said below and it should work. Your probably having problems with .9 pngs

to do what you are trying to do.......grab the twframework-res.apk from your phone by pulling it with adb...or simple version just grab it out the rom you are currently using by moving the og rom file to your desktop and use 7zip to extract it.
now use 7zip again to extract the drawable-hdpi folder from the apk.
swap out status_bar_background.9 for a transparent one you grabbed from another theme...or you can make one by yourself...but its a .9 image so you ll have to patch it in 9 patch.
if you want to avoid that heres a transparent one for you http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15331201/rom/transparentbackground.zip (just extract it and swap it)
open up the twframework with 7zip again and copy this drawabl-hdpi folder over the old one....then you can push this framework back to your phone...or just take one of our theme update.zips and open it up with 7zip...go into the system folder, delete the app and font folders...go into the framework folder and delete whats theres and place the twframework-res.apk in it....put the zip file on ur sdcard...boot to recovery and flash it
Thanks
Thanks for the tips guys. I will work on this today and have something later.
as soon as I get back to my comp I am going to try and fix it...

Hello all, I'm fairly new to the android modding, but I figured out a way to modify the stock battery icon in the status bar to show the percentage.
By default the I927 stock rom is setup to show in increments of 5%. after following CarpeNoctem's guide for rooting the device, I was able to extract the framework-res.apk in the system and change the battery icons. in order to do this you need to have installed on your device, Root Explorer, NinjaMorph, and BusyBox. You also need to have a file manager like Astro, but it's much easier to use the usb cable and insert the icons using the pc.
I have included the complete framework-res.apk file that already has the icons inserted and a compressed file of the icons if you would rather insert them your self. If you plan to inserrt them on your own, just simply overwrite the files in the framework-res.apk with the ones in the compressed file. use NinjaMorph to extract the framework-res.apk then connect the usb cable to your pc and when you are done, disconnect the usb, open NinjaMorph and repack the framework-res.apk. Be sure before you reboot to set the permissions of framework-res.apk to rw-rw-rw- with root explorer. just to be safe use root explorer to make a backup copy of that file and check the permissions to see what they are before making any changes.
Remember there is always a risk of bricking your device. use the information at your own risk.

I would love to, but I'm still new to this, have to figure out how to take a screen shot of my phone to post!
I did find a small bug while testing my own mod. I lost all of my contacts after modding the framework-res.apk file! For now please backup your contacts through google or another app.

Either long press the home button + power or install a screen shot app.
Ok thanks, here are two screenshots.
Losing contacts, I mean the accounts like google and Facebook are removed, and your wallpaper is reset. You'll have to go back and add those accounts back.
this "MOD" is called the "Accurate Battery Mod" you should change the title of the thread....

Agreed, title has been changed.
Here's a couple more shots. If anyone wants a different style icon make some requests, I'll begin some work on different styles. If y'all can find online or extract the framework-res.apk file that has the icon sets you want, post them and I can use them to make custom sets. I believe I can, also change the other icons like the wifi and signal icons too.
Can somebody please make a video guide? I have no idea, or somebody post exactly what I need to do? Do I download the two files on my phone? On my computer? If I download on computer, do I choose "Open to see files"? where do I put it? etc..
extremely helpful mod. I currently have been using a series of widgets from the android store to show the percentage/time left, but this is what I was truly after.
Using a rooted AT&T ROM, and was extremely easy to install and operate.
I commend you on your efforts, and speaking for myself, I came over to the Samsung Captivate Glide from the HTC Tilt2 (windows mobile 6.5.3/various energyROMs), and I look forward to all the MOD's and other goodies that are made for the SCG.
I feel so dumb >_< How did you do it, could you tell me briefly?
