[Q] Troubleshooting - Nook Color General

Hey all, this is my first post here at XDA, but I have been trolling around for quite some time! Here's the background: I have my NC running Froyo internally and I LOVE it!!! Super fast, Quantum score after fresh boot high 1600's, sometimes low 1700's I have pretty much everything working exactly as I would like it, save for a few issues. I've been doing lots of searching, but haven't been able to find anything of particular help, so thought I'd post them.
1. Has anyone else had problems downloading files from within an internet browser, i.e. stock browser, Dolphin HD, Opera, etc.? For me, it doesn't matter what browser I use, I always get a "Download failed" notification. Made sure my "download" folder on SD card is set to Read & Write, still no luck. Any ideas?
2. Not sure if there's been any headway on this issue, but after trying at least 7 times, I still cannot get Market 2.2.11 to work. Is it a lost cause?
3. I have installed Flash 10.1, but can't get ANY Flash to work. I've tried every browser and checked every setting, but no dice. Have also reinstalled Flash several times, using various APKs, to no avail.
4. Tried to use Pandora today, looks like crap and doesn't really work. Does anybody have the Pandora APK from the stock B&N ROM? I didn't think to back it up, silly me. Bigger problem though is that headphone jack will not work, period. NC doesn't detect anything is plugged in (no change in status bar, and no sound through phones); tried three different sets of headphones, and nothing. Anybody else have this problem?
5. Lastly, I've set up my Exchange account several times (on different ROMs) on my Hero with no issues. I can't get it to work on the NC with either the stock email application (which I prefer) or K9. It always has issues with SSL, which is required.
Any thoughts or input, even if just corroboration of issues would be greatly appreciated.

Help with niggly problems on G1

Hello there,
I've tried Googling and searching these threads, and I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problems as me, so if anyone can help me I'd be really grateful!
Basically, I've had a rooted G1 for about 6 months now, started off using JesusFreke, went on to CM and now I'm running the latest ROM with an 8 gig class 6 SD card. Anyway, everything runs smoothly except for a few niggly things. As far as I can remember I've always had most of these problems since rooting, and now they're worse than ever and starting to grate. I don't think it's my particular handset, as this is the second G1 I've had - although as I said, I haven't read of these problems with other people, so I don't really know. The problems in question are:
1. Email isn't very 'pushy' anymore - when I first got my G1, and for a while after first rooting, I was amazed at the push Gmail...I loved it, and it often worked faster than my computer email client could retrieve emails with its 5-minute interval. However, now my G1 seemingly only downloads emails when it can be bothered, and more often than not I'll do a manual refresh to find about 6 emails waiting for me. It's somewhat annoying really.
2. This is another major thing: Locale just won't recognise where it is anymore. I'll go into Locale for a few seconds, it'll snap on to 'home' or 'work', I'll come out and after about five minutes, it'll jump straight onto the default settings again. I'll do this again, and it happens again, etc. My phone knows where it is, as the maps work perfectly, and I'll even tried leaving GPS on all day, but to no avail. This is a major annoying niggle, and it seems to get better/worse with different updates. Has anyone experienced this? At the moment, Locale is virtually unusable.
3. Since I'm asking for help, the other little niggle is that to add shortcuts to my desktop takes an age...I'll do the longpress, click 'shortcut'...and then wait. And wait. As far as I can remember my phone's always done this (even the old one), but if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong it'd be really good.
In fact, if anyone can help me with any of the problems I've described I'd be really happy...the email and Locale thing are starting to become a big nuisance, and I'm starting to think about changing my handset over it, despite my love of Android, the G1 and the excellent CM updates that Cyanogen tirelessly sends out.
Thanks so much in advance,
Mark
I've never had any of those issues the gmail issue is the only one that woulg get me... what rom did you go with this time around?
Hi, I've just got the standard CyanognMod ROM with the latest 4.2.9.1
I have the same Gmail problem.
No idea how to fix it.
I'm going to say it's probably two things together:
1. Low memory. Having had your G1 for a while, you've installed lots of apps. Each app uses RAM. Low RAM makes everything sluggish and buggy. Uninstall anything you don't use regularly. Doing a full wipe and reflash of the htc update image, and then the latest cyanogenmod, will give you a blazing fast phone again, with everything working beautifully (but you'll have lost ALL your installed apps, saved sms, settings, etc.).
2. Task-killing app. You probably use Taskiller, Close Everything, or something like that. It is killing Gmail so it doesn't refresh, killing locale's location service so it doesn't know where it is, etc. Make sure you exclude ANYTHING that runs in the background constantly to work. Basically, anything that does something automatically, or generates a notification, or anything. Email, gmail, messaging, etc.
Not cool
You can't say niggly, only we can say niggly.
gmail push
there is a way to 'Set download frequency' by default.

'Niggly' is a word of Scandinavian origin which in this context essentially means 'irritating'. It is in no way related to similarly spelt offensive words, which is what I think you're getting at.
Anyway, many thanks to all those who posted help, I deleted a load of programs and it helped greatly. I had no idea that having too many apps, even in an apps2sd setup, would impact performance that much.
Still can't get Locale to work properly though. I'll delete a few more apps and see if that helps.

Non ROM Specific Camera Issue

I've been scouring the forums in hopes of a fix for my problem (the G1 Q&A and the Android Development forums). In my searches I have found 10-20 people who have had this similar problem, specifically, a force close whenever I (we) attempt to use the camera.
I'm %90 positive this is a software issue. I have had this phone (my 3rd one) for a few months now, and never have I had any issues with the camera, i actually use the video cam fairly often. Anyways...I decided a while back to root and flash Cyanogen's latest ROM, with the latest radio (posted a few days ago) and the Death SPL. Once i completed this, I was met with an instant force close when attempting to use my camera.
I have actually wiped and installed Cyanogen's ROM 2x, (the 2 latest versions), I have also installed KingKlick latest ROM, neither of these, coupled with countless different configurations has solved the problem. I have attached a small snippet of the last log I pulled. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I also forgot to mention (and this might be completely wrong), I did restore the 1.5 image from the SPL, rebooted the phone, and the camera still didn't work, it didn't force close, just hung like it was trying to boot. I have also used the latest Super D ROM and I'm experiencing the same issue.
With my minimal knowledge, only one thing in the log jumped out at me, or, should I say I only saw one thing that I understood.
"X: /dev/msm_camera/control0 open failed: No such file or directory!"
Please help, this is a major deal for a number of people, every time it's posted, people just seem to ignore it.
Download Camera Magik from the market. If the problem is software related, then using a different camera app could be the solution. I like camera magik because is takes better pictures at low lights then the stock and the ability to zoom, but you can try any other app. Another suggestion is trying a sense based rom and using HTC camera. GL
I guess I should have said Kernel based as opposed to software based. I tried Camera Magic as well as one other new type of photo software, Camera Magic FC's, the other one opens, but, the camera never turns on.
Do you have any other apps that use camera(i.e barcode scanner, shopsavy)? You may have to uninstall and re-install. Did you wipe in-between roms? Try clearing your rotation settings from recovery, that may sort it out (I know it's a long shot). Other then that, email whoever's rom you're using directly with that log, they may be able to help you a lot faster then any of us regular folks can
Good luck
try a complete super duper wipe.
start from rc29, nonrooted. see if the camera works. if it does, start the root-rom process and check at certain intervals. if it doesnt work when your not rooted and on the stock original firmware, then its gotta be the phone. did it ever work before? i know you said this is your 3rd phone. has it ever worked on this particular phone?
First off, the camera/video has worked on all 3 of my phones, the 1st one had to be replaced because the keyboard went out, and, the 2nd one just kept randomly rebooting, the 3rd hasn't had any problems what so ever until my first root, which was Stock 2 Cyanogen.
So, I went back to RC29 unrooted and experienced a different problem. The camera didn't FC, but, it hung indefinitely at a black screen (kind of a dark grey). Unfortunately, for some reason the system option to force update to cupcake wasn't available, so, after 5hrs of waiting, I went back to root SuperD.

Froyo instability?

So I love froyo and for the past week that I've had it (via ota) it has been really great, but today I began having these sudden problems:
I can't install certain apps (market or sideloaded), even though I have plenty of room for them.
Random apps that are normally stable just crash out of the blue.
The phone just keeps slowing down and things are taking longer than they should for both 2.1 and 2.2.
The phone crashed today, meaning it decided to reboot on its own accord, once when I was running a few apps at once (something that I do almost every time I pick up the phone) and was switching between them, the second time was when I had some background processes and I was browsing the web.
I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing these problems, and if you are did it just happen suddenly one day like me or was it from the beginning? I also want to know if anyone has suggestions or a diagnosis that I should consider before emailing google.
Thanks for all the help,
Liam
Try resetting the phone to Factory (Settings-Privacy). Or if you're rooted...Wipe.

Does that wipe apps, settings and all other data, and is there a way to get it all back?

[Q] Opening contacts lag even after lag fix

Hello all, I've been trying to fix this on and off for months, no luck. Any help appreciated.
Problem: Opening contacts often takes over a second.
Conditions: Less than 100 contacts, mostly Google contacts, doesn't matter if Internet-connected or not when I open contacts.
This has been going on through the last several versions of Cognition I've used (currently on 4.3) -- can't remember for sure if it happened when the phone was stock, but I think so. Voodoo lag fix seems to be enabled just fine.
Any ideas?
Try a different lagfix. Speedmod kernel has one built in, as does Onix. I have the onix 2.0.5 on my phone right now (running Continuum rom). Don't forget to read directions on installing a new kernel if you go that route.

A whole second, really?
Initial contact start up does on mine too, Cognition 4.3. Maybe try a different kernel or update to 4.3.1 or report it in the Cognition thread/Q&A.
oh well
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a different ROM, which I'm pretty sure is based on a different kernel (latest Serendipity) but I get the the same behavior (and in my defense, it's really several seconds, which feels like a week when you're staring at the screen).
I guess for now I'll just live with it.
solved
I finally figured this out. Totally random: it was the SIM card. It was old, and it crapped out entirely yesterday so I got a new one (a couple of times over the last month I'd get 'No Service' and have to reboot -- guess that was a warning).
With the new SIM, Contacts opens in a snap. Note that I never kept any actual contacts on the old SIM, but maybe the phone checks the SIM for contacts anyway, and wasn't getting the right response... so the lag I saw could have a time-out after waiting for the SIM.
Anyway, I'm happy now. The whole experienced got me to try a few other ROMs, too. Firefly is pretty slick.

[Q] Absolutely awesome!!!!

Extreme kudos and awesomeness and gratitude to jcsullins and all the folks involved with developing CM10/Android for the TP. Thank you.
I had been watching the forums to figure out a good time to "jump in" and yesterday I took the moments to install CM10.1 (4/18/13) on my TP. I was amazed at how seamless and flawless the installation was. It seemed it took less time to do the install than it did to download CM10 (download was ~100kb (kB?)/s). CM10 came up running without any problems.
Of course, it wasn't without some issues After confirming CM10 was functional (along w/Wi-Fi, etc.) I installed gapps and that's where the problems began. I first tried gapps-jb-20130409-signed (which did not get installed with CM10). After it was installed, I lost the keyboard app (kept getting messages about the keyboard no longer working). I tried suggestions of default/reset and clearing both caches. Didn't fix the problem. Wasn't sure how to uninstall gapps, so I did a complete CM10 reinstall and tried gapps-jb-20130409-signed again. Still no good. I thought maybe it was a compatibility issue (I could never be absolutely clear which gapps would work with which CM version). So, I went with gapps-jb-20130301-signed. Same problems. I then came across gapps-jb-4.2-Gapps-And-Extras-Signed (I changed the name to be sure it would work with ClockWorksMod) mentioned in a posting. This seemed to do the trick. Keyboard remains fully functional.
I'm curious if there are any log files kept on the TP from the install. Each time I installed CM10, I noticed in the messages rolling up the screen that certain directories couldn't be found. And I think a few of them were related to gapps installation. I'd be interested to see what that was about.
The only problem I've noticed in the short time I've played with it is that the Wi-Fi went inactive (and not temporarily). I went into settings and tried to turn it off and then back on. Once I turned it off, I wasn't allowed to turn it on. There are prob'ly 1/2 a dozen or more Wi-Fi sites nearby, but the TP couldn't see any of them. I ended up doing a power down/reboot and that brought back Wi-Fi.
Anyway, I am very pleased with the new OS. And happy to be independent from WebOS, since its future is unknown.
Cheers....Steph
A two years old device with the latest Android, yeah, its definitively a great work!
Log files are saved in the back up and/or in /cache/recovery/last_log . Also do you have the "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" setting set to Never? That might be why your wifi is having issues, because I had the same issue when mine was set to Never. Now I usually keep mine set to Always and it hasn't had that issue and doesnt seem to use the battery too much.
Surge1223
Im curious, were you testing CM10 or CM10.1?
Go and read a guide again, you're installing the wrong gapps. The ones it specifically says not to use.
You need this one:
