Can't access /data - JPY - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I've been trying to run Ubuntu on my Galaxy S - Docs rom based on JS3, JPY modem and Hardcore's Speedmod kernel. I solved the loop problem - an app was installed on the SD card which kept the device as busy so I couldn't get a free loop. But now am stuck at accesing /data ... when I try to copy stuff to /data/local/mnt it gives me a "mount: No such device" error and I can't acces the folder /data from inside the phone nor with Droid Explorer. Had Busybox 1.18.3 downgraded to 1.17 still the same...
Anyone got any ideas as to why a rooted phone doesn't have access to that folder?
cheers

[Q] Problems with root [Answered!]

edit: I never did figure out how to backup the original rom. As far as rooting it goes make sure that your phone is in download mode and that you are using a real PC. I am using parallels on a mac and I still have yet to figure out how to get my phone connect to the VM in download mode.
Ok so I just got my galaxy S and I have spent a day and a half searching for the answer to this so if I missed it I am sorry.
I can mount the SD card, copy the update.zip (I have tried all of them I could find), reboot into recovery, flash the update.zip, and reboot
When the phone boots back up the superuser.apk is installed, busybox is in the /system/xbin folder but no "su" in the xbin folder.
My phone is an i9000 8GB
Firmware Version 2.1-update1
Baseband version I9000BGJF1
Build Number ECLAIR.BGJF4
I really want to backup the whole system before I flash a new rom.... any ideas on what could be going wrong?

Permissions /system/csc/

I have downgraded from JPK to JM8. When recovery runs I get an errormessage about "can not access /system/csc", not exact words but I think I've understood it right. I have checked it with ADB and I have permissions set to "drwxr-xr-x root root csc" and in /system/csc I have "-rw-r--r-- root root" on all files. It seems a little strange that my permissions are set to that in the folder. Are those permissions correct?
It's not related to JPK at all. JM8 expects multi-CSC and the XEE CSC is not. There is no problems at all connected to that error, so you can safely ignore it.
If you're like me though, and hate to see it, there's a really easy way to make it go away. Create the following 2 directories (root required):
/system/csc/XEE
/system/csc/XEE/system
Simple as that.
Ok. Will do that. I'm looking for a reason to why I can't flash docs rommod onto my phone. I can't get any further than to the S on black background hearing bootsound but the phone doesn't boot up to a ui. Thought the message could be a clue to that problem
did you do a factory reset in recovery?
When do I have to do that factory reset? I have tried to do it after the slimmod flash. Should I do it before flashing the mod? Now I have oclf installed. Do I have to remove it before trying again?
I have done a clean install of JM8. Installed OCLF, rooted, installed RomManager and clockworkmod recovery. Pushed extreme superslim to internal sdcard. Rebooted into recovery. Did a factory reset and wipe of cache. Installed zip from sdcard. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT MY CLOCK SHOWES TWO HOURS TO EARLY. What am I doing wrong?
Install fresh jm8 push docs update.zip to sdcard and apply it. Then install those rest...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
At last! After to more resets and flashes I have Extreme Slim on my device and I really likes it. Big applause to doc. Happy HTC:ing.

I noticed with this you had to change the permissions for these foders using a program such as root explorer. Tick all boxes. Well, that's the only way I got rid of the error.
Also case sensative..
/system is usually mounted a read-only, you have to remount it like this from terminal emulator (rooted of course)
$ su
$ mount -o remount,rw /system
then run
$ mount
you should see /system mounted as 'rw'

How to reinstall stock application removed in Darky'S

I Have installed on MY I9000 the Darky's 9.2 Extreme edition.
Is there a way to reinstall it?
I would reinstall "write and Go" app.
I Have found the apk but when i try to install it by tap directly on apk file the system respond with "Application not installed"
Can anyone help me?
However, the Darky's 9.2 Extreme edition is fantastic.
go to www.romkitchen.org and select create update.zip select all the apps you want and then generate it and flash it thru CWM easy peasy lemon squeazy will take you less than 5 mins.
Thanks a lot . I have downloaded the generated file but the name is update-AiGIQJ8kLa.zip
I need to rename it in update.zip before flashing?
During the generation of update.zip in the rom kitchen site, if i chose "none" in the boot animation step when i flash remain the current boot animation?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I have tryed to install the file generated for the site but i have a problem.
When i install the update vie CWM i read:
Finding update package
opening update pakage
installing update
Then the procedure reamain bloked with the the bar always gray.
I waited 10 minutes then I removed the battery and put back.
The Phone reboot without the new application.
Help me please.
Thanks. Thanks
when you go into recovery mode what does it say ??
does it say something like clockwork mod recovery or does it say something like 'android recovery system <3e>
you need to be on recovery 2e ( clockwork mod) to flash update.zip files.
oh and yes the boot animation will stay intact
I'm in the Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix.
not in 2E. This is the CWM that start automatically when i choose recovery from the reboot pane on the Darky's 9.2 system.
how do I start CWM 2e?
Thanks
Hello I found the solution using adb looking in the forums.
Adb I unmounted and remounted in r/w the partition /system /app.
Then I copied the application from the internal sd to /system/app
I used the following commands ....
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
cp sdcard/xxx.apk system/app
chmod 644 system/app/xxx.apk
where xxx is the name of application . In my case WriteandGo
Thanks

Fail to mount /data
I have the same problem and have tried various fixes but none have worked so far.
I flashed different combinations of the three .pit files (512, 513 and 803) with GB and froyo roms. I flashed some other files than people said would work (dbdata.rfs.tar and P-SBL.tar.md5.tar) although I don't really know what they are supposed to do.
I also used parted in an adb shell to try and change the /dev/block/mmc/blk0. I printed the partitions (there was a FAT32 one and an ext4 one). Using 'rm' I tried to erase these partitions so hopefully a flash with re-partition would work. But afterwards I printed the partitions again and they were still there, exactly the same.
Does this mean that my problem is hardware-related?
If anyone has alternative solutions please share.

i9000 bricked or something like that.

I have tryed to flash many roms, 2.2.1 2.3.1 2.3.5 .2.3.6, (JVT, JVR, LPY, and new ones) always same issue: "E: failed to mount /data (invalid argument) and then bootlooping.
I`m sure my mmcblk0p2 is broken, question is how to force delete this partition or flash rom in to external SDcard!

Have you tired using a pit file?
flash a stock rom from samfirmware.com with ODIN.(eg. jw5)
to extract the password is "samfirmware.com"
tick repartition and use 512 pit file(included in rom from samfirmware).
check youtube for "flash with odin" if u dont know how.
edit:u are trying to flash from from samsungs 3 recovery.u need cwm(clockworkmod) to flash.
go to CF-ROOT(for i-9000) thread and follow instructions and read all in the OP(1-2-3 posts)
again u need ODIN to flash it.
hey
there is the best wasy to do that...just go to sammobile.com
there sign up first and then download the firmware (in firmware tab) and flash-programs...
the make sure to use oidn3_v1.0 only...
you can also download the flash-guide if you need it...
its simple..
Thanks to everyone for replays, but nothing helped me x_x
if i flash 2.2.1 or 2.3.6 i receiving this error:

If i flash 2.3.3 or 2.3.4:
https://www.box.com/s/f09fd945620c03daffa9
And then it keep showing me GT 9000 logo......
yes i used 512pit and using 1.82 odin
I know there is way to install in to external SDcard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdMhYYdMB08
I had such error and successfully installed rom in to sdcard but i had issue with phone signal, so tried to re install rom and now its keep teling me cant mount data..

Yep, keep shows only gt-9000 logo..
I had a very similar problem earlier this year.
From what I could see the partitions on the phone's internal storage weren't able to be accessed. In adb I tried using parted and rm but the partitions there (/dev/block/mmc/blk0) didn't ever change. I also tried various .pit files and Android versions through Odin but nothing worked.
I took my phone in for repairs after flashing a really old version; as close as possible to what it came with, and they fixed it. The repair was due to 'mechanical fatigue' according to them. I assumed the internal storage was some how broken or corrupted and couldn't be written to.
Not sure, if you manage to solve this.
From you screenshots I can see you are using 3e recovery. I would suggest you to flash a kernel which support cwm recovery mode.
I have heard peoples getting this error while using it on 3e.
Captain_17
Yes Captain_17, i have exactly same problem, cant give it to repair since purchased it from abroad.

3e recovery because i`ve flashed 2.2 and 2.2.1 or any other official roms, i can flash CWM easy but as Captain_17 said i can see but cant touch
files or partitions.
If flash CWM then phone will boot to CWM only, and i cant flash any rom from CWM because i cant copy files to internal storage and external (sdcard) cwm doesn't see it.
Sorry man, wish I could be of more help. I tried every available option I could find online but nothing worked.
Seems to be a hardware problem and replacing the damaged part is the only solution.
Silly question, but you ticked re-partition? try flash 2.2.1 or 2.3.3 with 512 pit and repartition
Also, you could try to flash Darky ressurection via odin, not completely stock rom. I know that this is just tweaked stock, but you could try do that.
And, you could try to use Heimdall instead of odin - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196179
I have read somewhere that heimdall is more preferable than odin in some cases.
