[Q] Want to upgrade to newest firmware - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now I have a stock ROM, android 2.2 froyo SGS. I already rooted and used OCLF it. And now, I want to update it thru KEIS using samsung made stock rom, maybe 2.2.1 the latest?
What do I need to do before I can update my phone? Do I need to remove the partition made of OCLF and the OCLF itself? And also unroot?
Another alternative, I'm willing to fully reset my phone, then update it just like having it fresh from store then update. What do I need to do?
Of the two alternatives, I prefer resetting it. Cause I want a fresh phone. Thanks!

You didnt tell, where you live and what your regional settings are.
ONLY if you are in Europe: Reset your SGS to any stock version. (You'll find all of them on samfirmware.com). Use "Kies Registry Patcher" to fake Kies-settings. Tell Kies that your version is the XEU version. Now you will get the official UK english Froyo 2.2.1. AT the first start you may choose any other European language and region.

Sorry about that sir, I'm from the Philippines. Am I able to update to the latest or not? Thanks! And If yes, about the reset phone, Do I need to unroot and remove OCLF? Thanks!

Need to remove root OCLF etc .
Update to your networks stock rom via Kies YES if your network have updated to 2.2.1 No if they have not .
Update to Samsungs stock rom ( not your networks ) yes using unofficial route stock rom from Samsung Firmware and Odin method to flash new rom .
Network rom the rom supplied to your phone customized by your network.
Stock Samsung the rom supplied by Samsung without network customisation .
Factory reset is always best before any update i find .

[Q] Will Kies let me update my phone to official Froyo?

Hi,
Firstly, apologies if this question has already been answered. I tried using the search facility but didn't find the answer I needed.
I purchased my SGS from Malaysia. It came loaded with JG4 and the Singtel (Singapore) branding. I decided to flash the firmware to JP3 in order to get rid of the Singtel apps and the splash screen.
I have a few questions:
1. Will Kies still allow me to update to official Froyo even though I manually flashed to JP3? I'm aware that the official firmware isn't available yet for most of Asia, but want to make sure that when it does become available, Kies will let me update.
2. If I flash an unofficial European firmware onto my device, will I then be able to upgrade via Kies to the official European firmware? How does Kies determine which update is ideal for your phone? Is it based on the current firmware? Or do they check your serial number or something to determine where the phone was sold and only recommend that regions firmware? Do I need to downgrade to 2.1 in order for the Kies update to recognise that I need an update?
I know that if I really wanted to I could update things manually via Odin, but I would now prefer to stick to the official method of updating.
Thanks.
Similar difficulties
Hey,
I am having similar problems. I got my galaxy s from tmobile in uk but I upgraded my galaxy s to froyo 2.2 using Odin3. Problem is at that time I didn't have enough knowledge. The phone got upgraded to 2.2 properly but now a lot of functions like Swype don't work on it and also the Internet crashes quite oftenly also it is a little slow. I came to xda developers also in hopes to find out how to re flash galaxy s to 2.1 or fix my problems.
My advice for you is however, don't rush into anything like I did.
Regarding Swype, mine was disabled after I flashed the firmware too. Try holding down the button in the bottom left of the messaging screen to turn it back on.
Bump.
Can anybody shed some light on either question?
Is the official 2.2 update available yet via Kies?
I updated out of the box (got phone yesterday - unlocked but has some Vodafone branding in ROM) but still no 2.2 update.
Thanks

Well that's sorta the problem for me... I don't even know whether Kies will give me the option for updating to the official 2.2 firmware if it already sees that I have an unofficial 2.2 firmware installed already.
Having done some research (thanks google) I know Kies does not provide Froyo for Vodafone branded phones yet. However it appears to be due very soon.
The easiest way to get Froyo I think is to install ROM manager, then download a custom Froyo, stick it on your internal SD and flash it from recovery mode. Doc Froyo comes highly recommended
Probably not. I remember reading somewhere that kies will give you a message saying firmware not recognised.

[q] can't restore original product code and firmware!

Hello all,
I am an android user from United Kingdom, I have read through threads/forums about the kies registry patcher.
I tried to follow steps to update from 2.1 Eclair, but I cannot successfully patch the registry and fool samsung kies so I can install 2.2 Froyo!
The reason I want to use this patcher is so I can officially and legally update my Eclair to Froyo ! (I was previously on 2.2.1 Netherlends) I was using this Netherlends firmware for a few months, but I decided I wanted to revert to stock 2.1, as I thought it would be easy to just update my firmware officially through samsung kies once I had 2.1, but i cannot do that.
So I've been thinking about it, by upgrading to 2.2 Netherlends (XEN product code) have I made it impossible to upgrade my firmware to a United Kingdom one? Because it does state on Samsung kies that my Current firmware version is:
PDA:JF7 / PHONE:JF5 / CSC:SWC (XEN)
I am confused on what to do next...really, I just ultimately want a non-voided galaxy s and have legit 2.,2 so I can update to 2.3 Gingerbread, as it has a better file system just like rooted phones have.
I have been researching for so long, and I am fairly new to flashing, but I am not totally ignorant with it. I would appreciate it so much if you experienced guys helped me =].
Kindest Regards,
Carl.
Am warning you, cuz always this can go wrong .( The spoofing and checking if you can is safe, applying the new firmware can always go wrong, backup your efs folder before!!!)
have you tried the latest registry patcher (1.8) + latest kies (2.0) and spoof your UK CSC? (like XEU? or what you have)
It should offer your JPY 2.2.1 . And you could install it.
After you install the 2.2.1 you probably will have to change your CSC into XEU(assuming thats what you had?, or you are t-mobile UK user?) again with that code + imei (not sure it wont be KOR after this)

[Q] What firmware use to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1

Hello,
I've a Galaxy-S (was from T-Mobile Uk, but I unlocked it, debranded it and so on), it used to be 2.1, so back in november I updated to 2.2 using the Kies trick (changing the area code and so on). Now I'm finding myself *not-so-happy* about many bugs that are around (sometimes apps just crash... etc..). I'd like to go to 2.2.1 if this would help. But Kies doesn't even show an available update, so I was thinking of flashing one with Odin. Which one do you recommend?
My firmware is XXJPP. I don't remeber how to get other info/codes, so tell me how if you need them.
Also, I'm ready to wipe everything, but I'd avoid it. So tell me how.
Thanks.
JPY or WJS8 in UK with CPW csc .
Build your own in the rom kitchen .

I suggest you the JS8 ROM. Is the last froyo 2.2.1 european firmware. You can use the JS8 rome in the romkitchen to customize your fw as you want
Odin for flashing Kies for orugnal upgrade
Is JS8 an official upgrade from JPY(2.2.1)? For the UK aswell????
Or is it just a general European(including UK) update?
I'm on JPY right now. Upgraded officially from JPO(2.2) in the UK.
Do you think it is better to flash JS8 firmware?
(I have tried 2.3.3 JVK but I would rather wait for the official gingerbread update)
JPY is still the most current firmware for UK. I'm in Australia and have been using it since release. Docs version of course.
JS8 is Nordic I think.

For stock go to samfirware.com, sign up, download Odin and jpy 2.2.1 (for UK). Install with Odin without repartition ticked and you should still have your apps/data.
Site has all the files and instructions you need. Just make sure you have download mode.
2.2.1 is miles better than 2.2. You'll wonder why you waited so long.

The networks do not upgrade all the incremental updates JPY last one in general use and none have bothered to push out the later upgrades preferring to wait for the official release of 2.3 .
Either JPY or WJS8 will work well on UK phones .

I tried both the kitchen and the: stock Rome. Even if the kitchen seems so clever and you don't need Odin in order to upgrade, I ended up with a 2.2.1 Tom that didn't have the market app, and other basic ones. Plus the media scanner was crashing every 10 seconds. Another one started up in Chinese and kept crashing various system apps. That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability. Instead I went to samfirmware got 2.3.2 and it is stable, clean and fast. Using Odin is easy in the end so I recommend this if you want a fully functional phone. And gingerbread is so faaaast
That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability.
You are doing something wrong then as its the safest and most problem free method .

I have 3uk sgs and immediately went for odin for all my flash updates.
First thing is to check u have three button combo working. Just pull the battery to get out of that mode.
I'd go straight to gingerbread JPK. And with the few, clockworkmod zips you can add battery percentage and a few other nice things that aren't included.
I haven't looked back as jpk is such a great rom - memory management is sorted so no need for autokillet or taskmanagers.

[Q][HELP] Galaxy s GT-I9000 Issues with Upgrading firmware. please help

Ok so i would like to update my galaxy to 2.3 gingerbread official using keis.
I live in Australia and based on what i have read the update should be out on my model of galaxy. When i plug my phone into keis it is saying i have the latest firmware. I have done some reading up on this and if i am correct some of the hacks and things i have done to my phone could cause it not to be able to update and i would like to know if this is true and how i can fix this.
Things i have done:
- I am currently running 2.2 froyo
- I have voodoo lagfix and soundfix installed.
- I used sgs tools from market to use the optus apps which came with my phone that where unusable since i was with virgin.
- I applied a 3 button fix i found as well so i could update voodoo easier. But in the end i just used Odin.
One thing i read was that i have to restore the system apps to update it. which i have done with all accept one but the .apk backup for it is not working so i cannot. Will i have to use Odin and revert back to the original firmware and start again? Or is there something i can do from here?
Short answer- You can't.
Gingerbread isn't out officially anywhere at present (there was a brief period where it was out on Kies for Scandinavia- hence all the semi-official "leaked" roms).
On past performance we're likely to be waiting a fair while here in Oz- once Official GB Roms come out from Samsung you then have to wait for all the local carriers to add their garbage to it (and - according to them- "test" it) before it gets released on kies. I'd bite the bullet and just grab a nice rom from here.
Remember if you do decide to wait for the official update, you will have to downgrade to stock for kies to recognise your right to an upgrade.
+ 120 to that NO upgrade to 2.3.3 YET .
All upgrades are unofficial .When Kies has your upgrade it upgrades
Then before update undo lagfix .
Or to be really safe reinstall your original saved rom the one you saved before you started messing with the phone .

I think using odin to flash a stock rom back before updating by kies would be safe way

Depends Kies does not recognize stock rom as product code etc dont match = no update through Kies . Stock is not network supplied firmware as original .

[Q] Stock firmware that works with Kies?

I want to restore my SGS to stock firmware, so it works with Kies etc, as if I've not installed custom roms on it.
Which is the best route to go with this (e.g. which firmware version), preferably Froyo or Eclair.
Thanks!
Use Odin and install one of the Stock, or stock deodexed ROMs. Or if you want to revert back to original Vodafone ROM then check http://www.samfirmware.com to see if they have it. All stock firmware should work with Kies. Out of curiosity, why do you need Kies ? I never use it.

You can use Check Fus Downloader to download lots of stock roms. It depends on what country and carrier.

JPY did the trick, was correctly recognised by Kies and offered me the Gingerbread upgrade

The reason I wanted to install an earlier firmware was just to ensure the phone was correctly identified by Kies, and the Kies firmware update process would complete ok.
I'm probably going to sell the phone, hence need to make sure it's in "factory" working order.
Well from factory, all eu uk sgs phones will be shipping with jvo...

My phone was running a custom rom yesterday. Flashed froyo jpy when I had issues yesterday. connected it to kies and it gave me gingerbread jvo. No spoofs. It just worked. Now back on simply honey but at least I have a route out now!
How about an asian ROM that works with Kies Firmware Update?
I Flashed back to DXJF4 to try to update my firmware to at least DXJPA via Kies but the Update button is greyed out.
