So where is the promised January/mid-February NC 2.2 update from B&N??? Here's what I found recently:
"B&N plans to update the OS sometime in 2011. Regarding applications, we are committed to the NOOKdeveloper program and on track to add apps to our store in early 2011, but do not have plans enable Android Marketplace at this time."
It was never promised. Just rumoured. And then pretty much debunked:
http://nookappreview.com/2010/12/31/nook-apps-might-arrive-in-march-2011-developer-mode-in-jan-2011/
Still sounds promising seeing how i'ts March already. But it looks like it's more of a refined update as opposed to a general android OS update. The inclusion of flash would be nice. And if they are in charge of making flash available then maybe we'll get a decent working version of one a little easier.
The current build just feels sluggish. Especially the browser. Hopefully they can rectify that in whatever updates they have brewing.
In general I think BN just needs to get the app store out but maybe they are waiting on actual developers for this? At the very least...Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging, e-mail, Youtube, etc. would be nice. Support for more types of video codecs as well as allowing side loaded content to be added to the home screen would help make those features actually useful. I think they really are a few steps away from the stock, unrooted OS being decent enough where some of us less adventurous people will be dissuaded from going through the trouble of rooting.
Web browsing is a lot worse than on my iPhone 4 at the moment. The video quality on m.youtube is a horrendous pixelated mess. No difference at all between HQ and Normal.
To watch YouTube in HD, dig around for and install "signed_YouTube.apk". I believe this is the gingerbread version and plays YouTube vids in HD on the nook properly

I could see them waiting for more apps... its also possible their riding the hype and waiting for it to die down before releasing it.
However as I + others have said... theres NO REASON for B&N to update the nook. At least from a android firmware standpoint

According to a B&N employee, there will be an update to stock NC to Android 2.2 based firmware which will also support Flash, at the end of March.
Remember that this is third-hand, may be incorrect, and could be delayed even if it is correct.
I really wish there was going to 2.2 update.

That may not be true, it depends upon how "Enhanced NookBooks" will work, which according to their website are coming soon. Flash maybe?
I had not seen this thread and I just got back from BN. I showed the guy my rooted Nookand he was impressed.. although I dont think he liked my kindle app.
He did volunteer that there would be an update by the end of March. What was included .. he did not say.

We can hope and dream can we not?
If a B&N store employee is telling you when the update is coming they are talking out of their anus.
No company is going to give out any information like that to bottom level sales employees. When B&N settles on an official date they will at best give the employees a couple days warning.
Honestly we will probably know when its coming before the employees do.

I've seen some stores have specific Nook "experts" that just hang around the Nook kiosks all day long and they probably have more general knowledge about the product than say the cashiers or regular employees. I wouldn't say its impossible that an employee knows info that we don't. Or they could read forums like this too.

Well you have to remember this wasnt the first time we went down this road. I remember when every employee was saying the app store + 2.2 would come out in January... then it was Feb, now its end of march... I wouldnt be shocked if these people are just relying on luck, and assuming things.
Not everyone, employees included know that theres android on the low... its always possible that they just think were on Nook firmware 2.1, and just say a date for the next update as its possible.
Logically speaking, if the nook was getting an upgrade... and the employees actually knew, and were telling it why wouldnt it get announced? With something like 2.2, its not like B&N is going to just release it without trying to nab sales.

I really respect delays in software releases.
This means that the managers are allowing the programmers to fix the bugs, instead of heeding the CEOs' usual call to "release it now regardless of whether it works right".
I am not referring to any particular company or CEO, but there is always pressure from above to release software before it is stable.
PS How do BN employees know ? Someone has to be doing Beta testing before a release to millions of customers. It is typical for large companies to have employees do Beta testing. It would not be unusual for those Beta testers to get an email with link to "release candidate for public release at the end of the month, so please confirm that you do not have problems with this release". Then when problems are confirmed, release slips to the following month, rinse and repeat.
Hello,
just wanted to share that just the other day, must have been thursday, A Nook rep at my local B&N store and i got to talking and he said that he had been told that 2.2 will be out this month! and that he was told that in January. Looks like we might be getting luck! Just gotta be patient. Always fun... lol

Right.
Although it would be nice to have a B&N rep. mulling around the forum. After all, I think communites like this are best at making products better for everyone else. And forum reading typically are strongly tied and loyal to their device. They also are more likely to spread good PR if they are happy with their product and the company attached to it. Read; OG Droid compared to the Droid X fiasco. Ever wonder why they finally allowed an unlockable bootloader on the Xoom? Something caused them to backtrack a bit...even if we only represent a small percent of the consumer base.

Guyz... Just came across this blog where MS is giving some estimated time frame that you can expect the NoDo or Copy/Paste update to your specific device.
This link is specific to the US devices: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/features/update-schedule-usa.aspx
HD7 Device shows up as "Scheduling". They also claim the status would be updated weekly. So go check it out.
This is the link to the Blog: http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_.../2011/03/23/copy-and-paste-update-status.aspx
I've been holding it in and am a huge supporter. This isn't going to be constructive at all but, **** MSFT AND THE CARRIERS!! It's MSFT fault either way. If the carriers are delaying release of the updates, then they should have enough nuts to say something and get it done. Hell, show them the predicted results of what happens to your market share when they piddle around and piss off customers. I've been one since I bought my Motorola MPX 220 and Ipaq Pocket PC. I've done nothing but brag about WM since it's inception. Posted facts about WM on my Facebook page to shut up people about Apple and them being the first smartphone. And now I'm just plain fed the **** UP!! Sorry to rant, but I could actually keep going. NO custom ringtones, NO Mass Storage, NO multitasking for an alarm clock that doesn't suck, NO threaded email or single email inbox, NO....you fill in the blank now. And I was excusing all these things due to my faith that MSFT will get with the program pretty quickly. Looks like it's time to fix my HD2's screen or buy a freaking Android phone until MSFT catches up in 2015!
I agree. I am so pissed at the way MS is trying to push this update. If MS can define hardware limitations, they could very well define the update rules to the carriers. I think MS should grow a pair and tell the manufacturers/carriers to push the update all at once its ready.
This is so frustrating. No doubt Apple is the master of delivering the updates. In fact, Apple does not even have to announce a software update, every one knows they can expect one every year in March/April.
I thought MS would have learnt something good when they launched WP7.

I have HD2 running android and have less to complain about then with WP7.
I also have HD7 with half an OS on it. It reminds me it is half an OS as each time I want to do something there is no option for it or it says no.
WP7 has potential but the way it is going that's where it is going to stay till XDA developers hack it.
Name smartphone was invented for a reason, it was to be used with phones that were "smarter" then average mobile. Had plenty of functions where everyone could find what they need. Current range of WP7 phones, Apple phones are a retarded version of smartphone but that only makes it an average phone, just huge!!!

You still haven't made your point.
An update every year to all its zillion+ customer base at once with our any issues irrespective of the carrier, across countries and continents. If they are not masters of this, you let me know the word I can use or you think appropriate.
A tiny-ass copy/paste update (which I'm not even crazy about) is taking them forever to deliver to it's customers. The reason I'm more interested in the update is for the Bluetooth fix and the email pictures fix, which when sent form an iPhone is not received.
An Apple or Android for every one of us? I cannot talk for others, but I've been there done that. Not apple of course (except for the 1st gen phone which I was using it on T-Mobile after unlocking it myself). I currently own a N1, HD2, HD7 (my primary device) and Galaxy S (my wife).
I'm not really sure about your devices experience, but you have lot a lot to say with out any point.

One question - How many times in a week do your reboot your phone or flash a ROM. I'm not asking if you are flashing ROM because there is a new one out there, I'm asking about the times you flash because of the hope the next one would be more usable and stable.
I was done looking for a perfect ROM and fed-up with ROMs that require a reboot every 12 or 24 hrs for them to work with out hanging up. I found the level of stability, usability, functionality and ease with WP7 OS. Thats why I switched. Of course the Apps and Games are a HUGE bonus for me.

If you actually stopped to think about what you just said, apple can do that because first of all they make their OWN devices (which are extremely overpriced/battery cant be replaced easily if at all) so yeah they can just send out an update, it doesnt have to be test on all of these different manufactured devices. So.........Apple still sucks..........WINDOWS PHONE ALL THE WAY!!!
You guys have to give microsoft a break. It is illogical and unfair to compare a first year company in the new smartphone age to others (apple and android) which have been around for years. Apple and android had really shaky starts too, maybe even worse. Its just an update guys, give microsoft a break on their new and amazing product! NICE JOB MS, keep the magic coming.

I agree here 100%. I came from WM 6.1 Pro to Android and dont get me wrong... I love my Droid but man did I do alot of *****ing waiting for my FroYo update and for what really? Flash was the biggest upgrade from Eclair and Apps2SD... REALLY??? Apps2SD??? My Omnia i910 could do that right out of the box but I had to wait for an update to do it on my Galaxy S I thought to myself...
This is a similar scenario here and guess what??? *****ing or NO *****ing we still have to wait NO MATTER WHAT!!!
I think MS has done a fantastic job on this OS and although it is lacking some pretty basic functionality as of now, IT WILL COME just like having to wait for Apps2 SD on Android which to me coming from WM 6.1 Pro I thought was pretty basic.
Hold your horses people and let MS do its thing and when this OS begins to mature a bit I have no doubt that it will be an absolute BEAST!!!

If not for the *****ing, we wouldn't even have the schedule they posted in their Blog. If they had took care of informing their customers in a timely manner and with accurate info, no one would've been *****ing. Instead, they were promoting their coming updates and fixes giving vague timings and everyone are frustrated not knowing what and when to expect.
The reason I got this device is because I love the OS. But that does not get away from the fact that they screwed up the update process.
the question now is, how often will ms be updating the website. we need to know cause the updates in the website (for hd7's) says that they are to be scheduled and it says it will take 10 days or less. when will the counting of days start? from the time the website was opened? if this is the case were now down to 7 days of wait time. i think ms needs to start re-labeling the updates. NoDo should be april update not march update

The finger pointing isn't unnecessary. Either they care about making customer's happy (who buy the product) or they can be more concerned about the carriers (which in my case Tmobile) haven't shown that much support for the OS in the first place. And you're right, I waded through all the other stuff because winmo really wasn't that bad if you understood what you were getting. For 2003, viewing movies, listening to mp3's and using Office features on a phone were so cutting edge, that you were willing to deal with the occasional bug, lock up or sometimes slowness of the OS. The only thing they did with WP7 was fix the ugliness, smoothness, and overall stability of the OS. Which is exactly what needed to happen. I applaud them for the fresh start. But, seriously, we're in 2011 now (8 yrs later) and you can't regress so far backwards, and then waste loads of time to re-implement things your previous (and every other OS) does now. I mean, what second or newer iteration of a product have you seen that loses a lot of it's most valuable marketing aspects? And as for my tear being silly. Your disillusioned in your thoughts that you don't need such things as I mentioned. If there was no need for them, then mobile OS's wouldn't have them and no one would care.

What do you mean...? They are doing something they NEVER did. They are not only supporting this OS, but addressing it in ways they never have before. I do agree that some things should not have been left out to begin with, IMO it is unacceptable to leave out something as minor as C&P. But they aren't the only ones who did this, and whoever compared them to apple is missing that this minor update is being given away they aren't forcing you to by another device to get it. You said it yourself, MS is not new to this game... hell in most ways they started the smartphone game the way it exists today.
So take a look at the ways Android (one of the OS's everyone claims is doing it right) went about rolling out Froyo. Or look at the fact that Apple is and has been pushing shiney, brand new feature to the masses that were available on my Kaiser in 2007 (front facing camera) or how they are masters at turd polishing.
With that in mind how are they really messing up?
You are seeing MS do things with it that we saw no signs of in 2003 but you feel they are making that big of a mistake?? I urge you to look past the minor crap and look at the overall picture.
There is no way you can logically look at this OS as a whole and see any real regressions. "Imperfections", hell yes. But regressions?? No way. The worst part about this update is that it has been beat to **** so bad that it can only catch negativity at this point. It has been splashed from site to site, and talked about at length... the expectations and anticipations are so high that people can only be let down. Back the hell away from the keyboard and chill out about something so small people.

They did support windows mobile, there was plenty of new builds just when WP7 project started it wend down. Yes they address update process in a new way but it is a flaud way. What testing carriers need to do? I mean FFS they put their own picture and search engine in, that is it.
I agree MS is more concerned about keeping o2, Tmobile or other carrier happy and as per normal do not care about ned user. We paid for this device and we should get an update ASAP bypassing carriers. Apple 3gs runs software of apple 4 and I think apple 3g also so no they do not force you to buy new device.
Also as said before all apple users get update from apple on apple rules and apple does not care about carriers.
You say you can not look at this OS as regression, you say update is doomed to fail due to high expectations that will never be fulfilled. Did you stop to think where are those expectations coming from. It is only normal to compare new OS to old one to see the upgrades, advantages. With WP7 there is only one smooth interface. People expect the same fitures that were in windows mobile, that all other OS makers copied. C&P, internet sharing, portable storage mode are just few big ones that MS ignored?! Why?! Why there is still no GPS software, it seems no big makers want to make one, that can only be Microsoft fault and do not tell me they care about customers because then they would be insisting for TomTom or copilot do one to complete their platform.
The only things I have read about other Nav software has been sketchy. And one of the reasons (real or not) is because they don't want to compete with whatever Bing updates are coming (whenever that is).
Not sure if its legit or not, but I saw it somewhere.
I will say that seeing Bing be so far superior on the other platforms is horse ****. If they want to do any one thing to make me more satisfied that would be it. Beyond that, as important as the update is I'm not going to cry about it taking this long.
Especially if it has to do with the carriers.
Bing navigation is **** that is it. It might work for US where significant number of people never leave US. However here in Europe, rest of the world as well people take their cars/bikes abroad and want to use GPS. Data roaming costs more then brick of gold so sorry that makes any online navigation ****.
I will not even mention fact that if you have basic gprs connection (the slowest) navigation will not work for sudden change of roads.
I have the dell venue pro TMo US. Just received my pre-nodo and nodo update today. I love you microsoft. Hope this fixes the wifi issue. No problems so far.
I've updated my HD7 to NoDo via the process of disconnecting data while Zune is checking for the update. Worked like a charm. I did this yesterday, couldn't rely on MS anymore to add my device to their batch process. The update is out there approved by most of the carriers. MS is the one that's limiting the update through whatever criteria within the Zune.

Maybe it's time for you to adandon MS all together. Chances are you'll be *****ing about them from here on out so why put yourself through it?
Maybe I'm mising something but I figure by now if it was ALL MS's fault more carriers would have pointed fingers back at them just to save face f nothing else, right?

I don't know why, but Google REALLY should sue. If Microsoft gets $5 for every HTC Android device sold, Google should get $5 for every iOS device sold with iOS 5.
EDIT: LOLOL, THEY COPIED SENSE 3.0 WITH THE LOCKSCREEN WIDGETS THING. They're so ****ed.
EDIT2: Does anyone here think that Apple will try to sue Google for using "their" notification system?
Hey, look on the bright side. They still don't have Flash.

I mean, I have no problem with them having a ton of features that we have already, they need to learn that Android is superior, but the fact that Apple acts like they JUST came up with it is what pisses me off.
Well just saw and its nice to know that Apple is reintroducing android 1.5...
"sometimes to innovate, you have to copy."
-actual Gizmodo quote
They have been doing this for years! I remember back when iPhone first came out and they acted like web and email on your phone was a new thing. I had been doing it on Windows Mobile for years.
Am i missing something? No widgets???

hahah its nice to know jobs running out of ideas....someone suggest him to make an
iAndroid app.....for easy access to android goodies....
On the brightside guys....ppl with iCrap can now actually be a tad happier. Imagine what it would be like if you were stuck wint iCrap and didn't have notifications and ppl you knew had that on Android. It felt almost as if you didn't have a smartphone.
Give them some slack.
Personally I see nothing wrong with taking other people's good ideas. I mean most PC operating systems are all based on the same digital ancestor. If I am trying to rip into an impenetrable bag a chips and see someone else do it well I will copy them and probably show other people something "I learned from that guy/gal over there". However...
Suing people who do something similar to you (especially in parallel research) is effed up. If they didn't go around patent trolling and suing everyone else in the business I would think "cool, good for iPhone folks", which i still believe, but at the same time I see Apple doing all these things and think "Fuuuuuu-!" especially when I think about a few months from now when they start a law suit to say someone pre-copied them or that after Apple copied them they continued doing it.

Apple sued Samsung for a couple of logos, and the box around the logos(app drawer), basically. LOL
I am wondering how an OS that is "open source" and thrives on expansion and adaptation can sue anybody for taking a "feature" that is on just about everything. I think the sue'ing game has gotten way out of hand. Just make make your shot and if people want it they will buy it....
Oh and on another note. As far as re-introducing Android 1.5 features, I think they are just going to perfect it like they have most of their other stuff.

Ok so Christmas is sneaking up on me and I'm thinking of getting my son (almost 3) one of these cheap android tabs. I was thinking of the innotab or leap pad but for its price i feel an android tab would do so much more and would be something he wouldn't grow out of in 6 months time.
So does any one on here know any good child mode apps i could use if i get him one? I wouldn't want him destroying the tab by changing all the settings and buying apps and sending emails to people etc.
I'd like an app that would boot into kids mode upon start up and that would be easy for him to access basic things like games and camera and coloring apps etc etc..and ideally a function where i could monitor his usage and see his progress in games and drawing...
Please help
Ps: for the people that think I'm mad, i am. Don't judge me for giving him a tab. I won't get an expensive one and even if i did, it's my money so no criticism please!

You can't just use any one of the several "kiddy" launchers already in the market?
It took me 3 seconds to find this one with many more available.
Must resist urge to criticize!!.....
Can't help it!! Guy, he is barely three!!! Get him tonka truck or legos!! If he is anything like my three year old, he will have more fun with the box it came with then the tablet.

+1 Why can't people let kids grow up at a normal speed, rather than trying to magically make them become a geek by the time they're 5? Kids spend far too long staring at television as they grow up, give him something that will get his imagination working and get him outside in fresh air.
Yeah ive seen one i like the look of called kytephone. I found that one here on xda.
I was mainly after opinions on what people use for their child. And what they liked about it.
And although he's only 3 he's very clever like his daddy lol and it will hopefully stop him using my note.

Edit: this thread isn't going as i hoped. I will not stick him in front of the tv all day nor will he have access to this tab 24/7.
We do play outside, we do have fun that don't involve technology so what's the harm in him earning an hour or two tab time?
I'm after advice not criticism so can we get back on topic or shall i close the thread?
Thanks
You should probably get him something like this.
Additional link here.
Cheap and has toddlers in mind with it's design.

Children need to play outside and socialize. Its only going to do them good in the long run.
There is a kid's Nabi Android Tablet in the Bestbuy Flyer in the Black Fiday Thread.

Hey, he is 3? When's he going to play with a tablet? Shouldn't he be in school?

I agree with the earlier thread.....
I just bought all 4 of my kids the nabi2. It is sporting tegra3 processor etc..... very rugged. $199. I even play games on it. Extremely easy to root. My oldest is 14. He even likes it. Mainly because he doesn't have to worry about breaking it.
It has nabi mode. In it you control content etc.... and "mommy mode" is just your basic ICS.
Check it out.
Thanks for the replies guys!
As for the haters, yes he will be in nursery, yes he will play out side, i don't lock him in his room and feed him through a hatch!
He's 3, he's clever and if he behaves he earns a reward which will be playing on the tab. It's my money, my child, my house and my rules.

And with that, this thread comes to a close.
Hello everyone
I can no longer read the forum from my Oppo via the tapatalk application, why? does anyone have the same problem?
Tapatalk integration has been removed. It won't work anymore. We have a new XDA app: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...rolling-out-now.4199599/page-37#post-84148669
Now that is a name I have not heard in a long, long time. I was an early Tapatalk user. Bought it when they had a paid version. Thought it was great. Since then, many forums have adopted a mobile view that is more than sufficient for light mobile use. Not quite as good as Tapatalk, though.
Tapatalk had two major issues before it started trying to swindle its own users. One, if you paid (them) for the app, they would stop serving ads from the forums, costing the forum operators money. Two, the forum owners had to install a Tapatalk backend onto their forum, and that always had issues. So forum owners were going out of their way to do something which not only did not benefit them, but it cost them money in ad revenue. Then Tapatalk started cheating its paid users by de-listing the paid app and pushing a freemium one in its place.
Tapatalk can take a flying leap.
That said, sad to see the XDA app that replaced it is not on the iOS App Store. While I still love Android in general, I'm an iPhone guy now. I used to be an iPhone hater, so it's kind of funny, but the whole smartphone wars thing was overblown, it was never really any good for anybody except the corporations, who loved it when people would swear off one brand, only to buy into another, and push the fanboys deeper into their trenches. Today, my tech loyalty is only to myself — that is, "what tech is best for me?". And, this year, a $250 iPhone SE 2020 was what was best for me. It's not the fastest or prettiest thing out there, but it does calls, texts, and music, which is all I really need anyway. (And I got the red one, so it's pretty damn sexy.) And it's an iPhone, so it's gonna get updates for five or six years, because that's how they roll. Still, I never got the hang of forums on phones, outside of Tapatalk, so, I'll probably stick to desktop usage regardless.

Exactly my sentiment. I ditched the Android after more than 10 years... And for good now after getting tired of all the Samsung crap and constant lagging and planned obsolescence... And I'm quite happy with the iPhone despite being a real hater of Apple for the way they did things and their pricing. It seems they got beaten to it at last by Samsung. Anyway I loved Tapatalk for reading the XDA and commenting. And this move is kind of annoying especially as an app for XDA is missing on iOS. I guess I'll have to use the forum only on my PC from now on...

XDA has been optimized for mobile and is excellent on Mobile browsers.
