[Q] Faster fix - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just installed the Continuum rom and was wondering what the "Faster fix" app is. I'm assuming it has to do with gps. Should I use it?

If your gps is working then don't bother. If it is choppy give it a shot. I have used it before and did not notice much improvement

cool was wondering same thing

I guess that fix mainly changes the NTP server to one which is closer to your location.

Tips to speed up my phone?

So I am running fresh, and I love it, 2.1 is awesome, but I can't stand the keyboard lag. Turning off optic doesn't help me that much and everything else is off. So my question is, dies anybody have tips for me to speed my phone up? Short of course of overclocking my phone? Also I love and use sense. Thanks in advance!

Some people will say use swype, some will say they don't have lag, some will say no matter what you do there will be lag, some will say "Why didn't you do a search for this"
Do a search in the forum and you will find plenty of threads with possible solutions.
I get very little lag.
Download auto killer, set it to the most aggressive setting and try it out. You can always adjust it from there.
Keeping free memory up helps a ton.

i know this is just a suggestion and ull get a ton of these but im using the original aosp keyboard with no voice to text or anything and get next to no lag. i think its the voice to text that is messing everything up. do a searcvh and find it and try it
i have found a solution to everyones problems, try this keyboard out in the market called thickbuttons it doesnt lag at all and its freakin sick
Yeah I've done the searches and tried all the fixes/ suggestions. I will try the thinkbuttons thing, but I don't like swype. Anyways, I'll look into enabling JIT on fresh, I haven't done that since I was on Darchdroid. Thanks alot! Any other tips for speeding things up? Does a2sd speed the phone up?

Only if you're SDcard is faster then the phones ROM, in which case it will make loading them faster.

on that note i have a question...How can i remove my app2sd, till i get a better chip? my hero was flying till i installed it on my stock chip. Now i need to undo, so what reformat? got to b an easier way??
I think you can make an EXT backup, but I'm not sure how to do it short of manually taking everything from /system/sd/app and moving it to /data/app

Hit up Damagecontrol 2.08.1, he included a new lighter keyboard that doesn't lag anywhere near as bad, the only real problem is the fact that the vibration feedback is sometimes messy, but I just turned it off. Otherwise it types like a dream.
Also, Damageless is customizing that latest 2.1 leak that came from Sprint, and in 2.08.1 there's DCUpdater, which allows you to update directly from the phone itself without a complete wipe. I strongly recommend it, it's got what you're looking for and more.

Sorry bro, but thick buttons has such a terrible learning curve. If you stare while typing, sure it works. But if you type faster than you can process what key gets larger, it isn't for you.
Do you have lag anytime you use the keyboard, or just when sending texts?
I know I had bad lag with the stock KB and the HTC MMS app.. but I have since switched over to the AOSP Mms.apk, and I have no lag in it at all.
Sorry to budge in, but I have had the same problem for a while now, I love the layout and prediction of the HTC keyboard (XDA) but the lag is annoying. For a while I used the AOSP mms.apk and all was well, but I couldn't send pic messages, let alone view them.
Is there a way to get around that and still have AOSP?

I use the AOSP Mms.apk on RegawMOD. Works just fine. Try repushing?
It hasnt been re-released yet, but I love TouchPal. You can still find the apk on rapidshare or hit me up and I can send it to you. You can turn off haptic feedback and make it scream and it has all the functionality of the HTC keyboard and then some.

Load up Zen's latest ROM - I kid you not - any questions?
I finally have no lag. I have no lag period even when I run pandora. I run purehero with the regular htc.ime. that was one of my main goals in finding a faster rom.

As long as you are using it on a low res screen like the hero, the attached apk should work. If you need it for something higher res like the droid, I think I have the APK at home. There are a lot of settings for this, so play around until you find a set that works. I suggest turning of the haptic feedback because that seems to slow down all keyboards on the hero.

Whats new in FRF83 Froyo 2.2

I'm wondering what all we can be expecting, and looking for here.
I've been running the first released Froyo 2.2 that was FRF50 so I know of all the changes to that. I'm wondering what anyone is finding with the new FRF83 that just dropped.
If you see or notice anything, please post it.

I've not had the screen problem at all on FRF50.. really. I think it was fixed. and not used 83 long enough yet to comment
Flash seems to run smoother, (the intro-video of adobe flash site is very nice to view!) but i still only can see flash BETA 3 :S
the crazy screen is worse than ever in 72. maybe cos I have korean keyboard installed i dunno. but it's also playing up in the market app when scrolling now.

trackball wake???? WHere
So far, the major change I see from FRF50 is the web browser. Scrolling is improved on certain (more complicated HTML?) web pages when Javascript is enabled. For example, try browsing Slashdot.org. Scrolls much smoother than FRF50. Seems like mild improvement over FRF72 also.
Edit: That's not all. Scrolling in market is smoother too - I suspect a change in kernel scheduling/interrupts or something fundamental and system-wide. Linpack is scoring 41+ with *default* kernel now - that's a good 6-8% faster than default kernel on FRF50 (I never tested FRF72). Either a side-effect of kernel improvements or further improvements to JIT.
Edit2: One more thing I noticed - something has changed with Flash handling in FRF83 from FRF72. Flash video on NYTimes.com was smooth and awesome (except in fullscreen) 2 days ago on FRF72. Now video quality seems to be significantly degraded (this is all on Wifi so I can't imagine what else would be different). I am still running the same Flash 10.1 beta 3 I was running before. This could possibly be something changed on NYTimes.com or elsewhere, hard to know, but I was really enjoying watching Flash video under FRF72 and I can't say the same now. I also tried switching to UAString Desktop in browser and playing some Youtube video, and they weren't degrading but seemed to be losing audio sync instantly. Definitely a few glitches in the matrix with the interactions between FRF83 and Flash 10.1 Beta3 that need to be addressed.

[Q] Is it safe to run the new "GPS Fix" app released by Samsung on a Cognition Rom?

[Q] Is it safe to run the new "GPS Fix" app released by Samsung on a Cognition Rom?
I am running Cognition v2.3b6, and my GPS works pretty darn well. Get locks on 5-9 satellites within 10-40seconds on a regular basis. When using My Tracks, my GPS never deviates off course and when I use Google Nav it almost always works great.
Yet I am still interested in seeing if using this new app put out by Samsung could further improve my lock times and increase my locks when inside buildings(not that it is all that necessary unless using a "check-in'' app like 4square or Facebook check-in.
So will running this app with my current Cognition rom mess anything up, and could it potentially make my GPS worse?
Appreciate the responses in advance.
My understanding is that all the app does is restore all settings to stock gps. So if you are happy with your configuration do not use it

Answer 1 - no it won't mess up your rom
Answer 2 - most definitely will make gps worse, in time. It's like performing a factory reset, just resets settings as mcord stated

I think samsung should of worded that differently, i don't think anyone wants to use the stock gps settings, its those settings that started this whole gps snafu in the first place.

[Q] FroyoMod vs CM7 RC4

Hello all,
I have been experiencing some freeze-ups on FroyoMod 2.6.0 and was thinking of flashing CM7 RC4 by nadlabak.
If I do end up flashing it, is the performance any better? What about battery life?
Also, is "update-cm-7.0.0-RC4-0.08-11.04.05-Milestone-signed.zip" the file I will need to flash? Or is that only an update?
Thanks in advance!
RC4 is very good. You should try it. The best of all CM7 releases according to me. You apply it just like you applied Froyomod. Place the zip file in openrecovery/updates and apply update in AOR.
I cannot comment on battery life as i have had it only for a couple of hours.
So far so good! I'm liking the different customizations, not much different so far compared to FroyoMod, perhaps a bit zippier.
I'm having issues with the power notification widget in the status bar, it's disappeared on me, but it is enabled in settings. Other than that it all looks very good!
Cm7 seems to have many bugs...
So dare not try....
For froyomod, everything works well except
1. When someone call me, my phone would vibrate for around 10 seconds but with the screen still turning off.
It is nothing to do with the cpu and vsel i set,
The phone dialer and contact list are also very laggy
2. 3d games perform pooer in froyomod compared with shadowmod b3

Just reboot the phone....
Display settings gives me FC
Does anyone have FC when selecting Display settings? Seems to me was working OK right after installing but now I always get FC
EDIT:
Problem found and even partially resolved: issueId=478
I use Email.apk to get access to my corporate Exchange email account, which enforces some policy on my phone that should results in removing restricted screen timeout entries from the Display settings screen, it turned out that the translation files contains less entries than the numeric timeout values which caused an exception (index array out of bound) so I got FC.
A workaround is switching to EN_US language (EN_GB is affected too)
Thx to kabaldan

[Q] Most Stable ROM for G1, that can run oogle Navigation?

Hi, all!
I have a Dream/ G1 with Android 2.2.1 (Froyo). This was the latest stable ROM before Cyanogenmod stopped supporting this device (update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip).
I've recently started to find that Google Navigation 'freezes', whilst following a route. It seems that the voice commands/ directions continue to work, but the map freezes. I find the app really useful and need to get another 10 months out of my G1 before I can get a replacement.
Can anyone recommend a stable ROM that can run 'Navigation'? I don't care about most of the features, as long as it makes calls, sends (and receives) texts, pulls down my Gmail and runs Navigation...... I guess the problem could actually be with 'the 'Navigation' app, so maybe I need to try to identify when this problem started and then regress to an old version and not allow updates...hmmm (thinking aloud).
I've moved as many apps as I can to the SDCard, in order to free-up space.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Chris.
I think CM6 is the only ROM that has the navigation app...Of course CM7 does too, but it's unsupported for your device. And a lot of the unofficial Gingerbread ROMs that also have the navigation app are very unstable.
Thanks, xda<3. Looks like I may have to dig the TomTom out, again.
Chris.
Try biffmod. It's like cm6 but stripped down and optimized specifically for the g1.

if you want stable try a ezterry rom, im currently runniing ezgingerbread(link on my signature)and i havent had one single force close.
Thanks maximo360, I'll have a look at that link now. Biffmod looks interesting, but at the moment, the /swap partition thing looks a bit daunting. I've created a seperate post about the Biffmod installation. As I say, I'll have a look at your link.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
cheers,

I had a look at the link. Interestingly it talks about Google Maps being very resource intensive and to use 4.7. This could be the root of my Google Navigation problem.
Before I test another ROM, is it possible to download the 4.7 version of Maps and just use this instead of the currently installed one, i.e., downgrade? I guess if it's possible, I'll just not allow automatic updating of Maps.
### Just notice the reference to Brut maps, based on 4.6. I'll see if this is on Market.
Thanks,
Chris.

yes u can downgrade i think that is discussed in the thread or just post a reply asking for the most stable navigation app that they used.
Brut Maps downloaded and seems to work. Will need to do a longish journey to prove it properly. Suspect it will be fine, as I used to run this before Google maps, without any issues.
Cheers,
Chris.
Brut Maps is far more stable on my G1 than the native Navigation app; I've been using it for a couple years now.
I guess the downside of Brut is that as a static APK, it may not get map updates. If this is the case, I can live with it.
Cheers,
Chris.
Froyo by Lazslo with Igo-myway working fine for me hier in EU . Is not necessary to have data plan or messing with google maps.
If you are alright with upgrading to Gingerbread, use COS-DS by Roalex. It's a great ROM. Stable, fast, and just great
I looked at installing EzGingerbrea, but due to complications upgrading Radio and Spl, I think I may have to stick with the latest (quite old) Froyo ROM. Thanks for the suggestion. I just don't want to install the Android Dev (SDK, I think) software on my Linux box.

Well ... with your radio/spl combo it should be possible to install EzGingerbread on your phone. Not that I would suggest to do so, because you will have about 14MB less RAM, which is noticable on our phones, but principally it should run .
What sort of complications? And you shouldn't have to install anything onto your computer... unless of course, those are the complications you were talking about :/ (Sidenote, linux = awesome, what distro are you using? I love ubuntu myself...)
And no problem for the suggestion, let me know if you decide to upgrade. Gingerbread, while probably SLIGHTLY slower than Froyo, it brings so much wonderfulness with it :] haha

Slightly off-topic, but I generally prefer Debian based distros, but in the last 12 years of having a Windows free house, I've tried most of them, and particularly like Arch linux. Ubuntu seems to be heading in a direction I don't like, but if I ever use a Ubuntu-type distro, it's always Xubuntu, as it's lighter but still has a feature rich desktop.
Cheers,
Chris.
