Has anyone had success pairing their Galaxy Tab to any bluetooth device using the Serial Port Profile? Description of woes below...
Alright, I went into buying the Verizon Galaxy Tab understanding a somewhat nerfed bluetooth stack, I have intentions on trying to correct this later, but for the time being it doesn't really bother me all that much. I found this page prior to purchasing: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...=2&PROD_SUB_ID=2076&PROD_ID=2083&AT_ID=346816 which outlines that it does in fact support SPP (Serial Port Profile). I got all excited about this, ordered up a BlueSmirf from sparkfun and set out to make a based device for all my electrical engineering serial monitoring needs. I'm sitting here with my shiny red box of parts, and I decided to make sure the BlueSmirf module worked. I powered it up on a bench supply and after RTFM and a couple of Doh moments I had it sucking down 0.030A, happy days. So then I tried to connect to it with my Galaxy Tab... which failed, miserably, I can't even find the device. My Droid 1 connects like a champ, and the serial app I prototyped using the App Inventor hums right along, sending and recieving serial data like its supposed to. A little more investigation (and this may be indicative of an issue on the BlueSmirf end) shows that every time my Galaxy Tab scans for Bluetooth devices the power usage on my bluetooth module drops to 0A. This is my first go with bluetooth (I've worked with ~900mhz rf before and GPS) so I'm not wholly sure what to make of this.

Did you ever get this figured out? I was hoping that it could be done easily via app inventor and a small script attached to a button to issue commands to an Arduino Uno.
What kind of range are you getting with that BlueSmirf? I am considering getting a Bluetooth Mate Gold for a robotics project of mine. I want to communicate using my T-Mobile G2 and also maybe a tablet.
Any help you can offer I would greatly appreciate!

the ec02 update for verizon moved bt support to the HID stack.
you can find the old, dj11 files, which support the SPP stack, in a sticky in the dev section, i believe.

I've been trying to get an older (2007?) version of a BlueSMiRF to pair/connect with my Vibrant running Bionix-v 1.3.1 with absolutely no success. The Vibrant doesn't even see the BlueSMiRF during a Scan for devices. My MacBook Pro pairs and communicates with the BlueSMIRF with no problems, and the Vibrant talks to the MacBook Pro and a Bluetooth headset with no issues.
Maybe there's an issue with Samsung's Bluetooth hardware or drivers?

Bluetooth controllers?

Are there any bluetooth controllers currently compatible with the SGS?
I know I can use the Wii controller, but I don't have a Wii, so that idea probably isn't best.

not really an answer to your post, but...presumably either way you'd also have to buy a Bluetooth controller so it's probably just as easy to pick up a Wii one?
I would prefer something a little more portable and cheaper if at all possible
From what i've seen, the Wiimote is not working on the i9000 yet.

If you can get a Wii controller working, shout me - I've been trying since I got my Galaxy with every different firmware/update combination - it's a no go at the moment.
Ryan Frawley replied to an email I sent saying it's down to samsung's bluetooth drivers being modified as compared to the standard Android drivers.
As I was writing this post, I checked my mail to look up Ryan's reply, and found a reply from Samsung to a mail I sent a few days ago (last friday I think). I will post the conversation in it's entirety here, I hope the employees at Samsung do not mind, as I do quote this without permission:

I will try and contact Android customer service to expand on the query, but I have some more questions I would like to ask to clarify the situation:
- you state that Android is responsible for the applications which connect to the Wii remote. However, the Android version which is installed on the Galaxy will have been researched and developed by Samsung's own technicians.
The applications on the market are capable of connecting to the Wii remotes (and other bluetooth devices) on other Android devices - yet all applications have issues connecting through the bluetooth drivers on the Galaxy. Indeed, I have yet to find even a standard HID device which connects to the Galaxy successfully.
By it's very nature, Android is open sourced - anyone with technical know how should be able to view the internal workings of the operating system and (often in an attempt to fix problems like this) edit the underlying files.
It appears that the bluetooth drivers (along with all hardware drivers on the Galaxy), as supplied by Samsung are not open sourced. Nor do they adhere to the standards which applications on the Android market are able to connect to bluetooth.
This in turn points at problems with the Galaxy, and/or it's bluetooth drivers, which are, of course, designed and supplied by Samsung.
Please, if possible, can this issue be escalated to a technical team - I understand the issues of getting a problem raised within a multinational company; I work for one myself and deal with such issues on a daily basis.
I would greatly appreciate your help in dealiing with this issue, and getting help in raising it to the correct team/department to have the issue resolved, if it is at all possible.

As usual, I don't expect much to come from this to be honest - my previous experience with this kind of query tells me that it'll get shoved under the carpet relatively quickly.
We'll probably be waiting until a proper Cyanogen ROM turns up, or someone gets either Ryan Frawley to patch up the application side (though I'd much rather the bluetooth drivers were standardised to begin with).
PS: Anyone tried a zeemote, mini bluetooth keyboard yet? I'm tempted to throw £30 or so on a keyboard/zeemote combo but I would like to know if it's something that will work out of the box or not.
I feel the need to bump this thread, since I'm so in need of this functionality.
Well, I got an update from Samsung. This sounds very promising, I hope they follow through with what they've told me:

What about connecting a PS3 official keypad (the one you attach to the PS3 controller) to the SGS? It would be useful to use in games like Quake 2 and 3, that need a physical keyboard to play. Has anyone done this? I have tried and have been unable to get it working.
The SGS can see the keypad, can pair, asks for the password but fails to connect.

That's the problem with most devices - the SGS will see the device and it's MAC address when scanning, but won't connect. Usually "0000" gives a very quick refusal, where anything else (the only way I've found to enter a blank PIN is to enter a digit then delete it) gives a rather long wait with "Connecting" then a message telling you it failed to connect.
Most 3rd party apps don't work either, though I've had success with the GamePro app NZTechFreak used - it's the only app I've found on the SGS up to now that does work with bluetooth. I'm pretty confident KeyPro from the same company would work, but I don't have a compatible keyboard to test.
Up to now, i've tried:
Wii remote/classic controller (original) - SGS sees controller, will not pair
Bluetooth "I-Tom" keyboard (ebay) - Despite coming with android drivers, does not work. Same symptoms as other controllers, third party app does not detect nor connect to controller.
Datel Wii Classic Controller - same as Wii controller
Zeemote - Works with GamePro drivers. Zeemote does not pair directly with SGS, it's all handled through the GamePro IME drivers/settings
I'd like to see if a PS3 controller pairs successfully, but from what you've said I doubt it very much
e: The app in the post above only has support for some very specific keyboards. By all means try it, I tried each one on my itom keyboard but nothing worked.

I might start using it after the cameras are fully working and a few other bugs fixed.

Yahh it does work ;D I wonder if there's a way we can build a samsung kernel with the bluetooth modules from cyanogenmod? Hopefully the cameras are fixed soon this is a showstopper bug for me atm

[Q] Tethering options for data connection?

I'm looking to understand what options exist for tethering the NC to a phone for data. I believe the only method currently supported is by creating an ad-hoc wifi network using software on the phone, and joining this network from the NC.
I have a Blackberry 9700, which cannot be setup as a wifi hotspot. With the release of CM7 build 17, it sounds like Bluetooth works (with limited range). My phone supports Bluetooth tethering because I've set it up with my Windows 7 laptop. I'm curious to find out whether this will be possible with the NC as well.. if not, what other options are there for getting online with my NC (besides having to purchase a phone that has hotspot capability). I used to use PDANet with a Palm Treo back in the day.. I'm also not opposed to physical cable-tethering if this is a possibility.

I would like to know this as well. My Evo is not rooted and I'd like to keep it that way for now, so my only options are PDAnet via physical cable and bluetooth (which I can utilize on CM7 but it breaks wifi) or Easytether (physical).

So are you confirming that you've got Bluetooth tethering working with your phone using CM7? Does the build break wifi permanently, or is it only during BT tethering?
Haven't tried it yet but now that you mention it.. I'm going to try it!

Will pair, won't connect
Well, that takes that option out of the running. I really prefer a physical connection though, and so far, I haven't seen any micro-micro (assuming this is because of power requirements anyway).
Even with the phone right next to the NC? That's disappointing.. by micro-micro, are you referring to the type of USB cable needed? I don't have the device yet, so I'm not sure what kind of connections it has available. Tethering over BT is the last feature I'm waiting for before pulling the trigger on this bad boy. I plan to use it as a removable CarPC (using my phone for data and an external Bluetooth receiver for GPS).
Yup right next to it. Now, I've seen some guys report that GPS works though via bluetooth and I plan on trying that next (need to charge my BT receiver.. hope the battery still works!). They said you needed a GPS app to fix your location though.
As for micro-micro, yep USB. But then we would probably need a client side app to be able to recognize that kind of connection.
And wifi seems broken with BT ENABLED (not on, just enabled).. going to revert.
Thanks for doing all that testing. Let me know how the pairing goes with your GPS receiver.. if you get that working, you would need GPS software that has all of the maps built-in (since Google Maps, etc, requires a data connection).
My primary use for the NC will be as a car PC, so the only thing holding me back is the Bluetooth tethering with my Blackberry (uses the Dial-Up Networking feature set).
I've been hoping to BT DUN working for my BB 9700 also. At the moment it appears that ppp needs to be enabled in the kernel for this to work. When I run pppd from the comand line it complains about ppp missing from the kernel.
It looks like the pppd program is being compiled with the CM7 build and that the ppp modules can be found in the kernel sources so there is hope. We could ask to have it added as a dynamic module but I not sure how to go about making the request. (I am a noob to the forums and not allowed post in Dev and there may be a another way to make requested that is preferred in any case. )
I also found this program that claims to set up a BT DUN connection via ppp and it does run without faulting on my NC:

Unrooted Evo and although I am having fun with all the great things we can do to our NC's I am really not ready to root my Evo just yet. Having that phone with me is the only reason I am able to walk away from my keyboard at all and just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I run Fedora on my laptop and can tether to my Evo using Azilink and USB cable without a problem but if I wanted to drag my lappie everywhere then the NC wouldn't be any fun atall!
Weird is when we can pair the Evo and the NC via Bluetooth (yes a few inches apart right now) but neither one wants to do the actual connection. The message pops up on both Evo and NC asking to acknowledge the "secret" code and what else to do but say yes to them both. Then they both try and fail to connect.
I guess there is a fix for AdHoc on CM7 but I am not sure how to get the unrooted Evo to create an AdHoc network for the NC to connect to. If anyone has that answer can you let us know? I will keep searching as well.

Yes, it's a complete crap phone with J2ME. It however, has pretty awesome Bluetooth. Unlimited Data.
Tablet: Streak 7 ofcourse.
Can't do anything with above phone unless an app is designed for that purpose. Plenty of file transfer apps, but, alas...
I want to leech internet off my phone so I can browse the web when on the road. I'm only ever without a hotspot when I'm stuck at Rite Aid for three hours while my mom is shopping (the perks of being the only unlicensed 18 year old). It'd also help so I could use the tablet as a replacement for my sister's tomtom when we go long distance (2 inch resistive screen? I might as well use my Rumor!).
Any tips or app recommendations?
Does the rumor have wifi?
It does not. It has Bluetooth and USB, and when usb connected to my PC, I can use it as a modem, but without buying a dock for the streak, that wouldn't be a viable solution.

Thought it was a MyTouch Android phone; reading comprehension fail on my part.
I don't know if the LG Rumor Touch provides Bluetooth data access via DUN (Dial Up Networking) or PAN (Personal Area Network) profiles, but there is an app on the Market Place (Nook Color Bluetooth Tether) that will enable a PAN Bluetooth profile on some Android devices. It is intended for the Nook Color, but it may work on the Streak7 also. You will need to root your Streak in order to try it out.
Streak's already rooted, I'll give that a go.

I'm curious too.
Running stock 2.2.2 rom (rooted) on DS7 (wifi only), I tried tethering with htc vogue running winmo 6.1 and htc vogue running cm7, no go. I tried using pdanet (both on ds7 and htc vogue cm7) nook color tether, and android wifi thing. No go.
Any solutions would be awesome.
Wifi is a battery drainer. Bluetooth much better as far as battery conservation.

2) What build are you all using with a good Bluetooth stack?

The app does bluetooth and WiFi (it's in the settings). If you want a stable ROM, either stay stock or use something like this (I use it pretty much just to have the black notification bar). DJ_Steve's HC port is an amazing feat, but it's still really buggy (mainly due to it coming from devices completely different than the S7).
Has anyone found a solution to data tethering the Streak 7 to another device via bluetooth?
I've got a Blackberry that will allow tethering over bluetooth, but the Streak 7 (T-mobile 4 G with stock ROM) doesn't have the proper bluetooth stack to do DUN. And it doesn't "connect" to the BB anyhow (although it pairs, and when paired I can send contacts to the Streak from the BB just fine).

Which OBD2 adapter?

I have old OBD2 v1.5 adapter. Chinese, big one. Which pairs with HU and works well.
I wish to buy new one, that call 'mini'. I know I have to look for v1.5 (as 2.1 is a crap) and with PIC18F25K80 chip.
But I read that even much of these new mini are PIC based, that have some strange Mac address like AA:BB:CC:11:22:33.
Anyone has experience with such adapters? Do they pair and work with Torque on our HUs?
If anyone is using such an 'mini' adapter, please post link to eBay/AliExpress where you purchased it. Will be very grateful (and it may help other people here, too, as many have issues pairing/using crap adapters).

I see you both the 'big' one (same as my old one). And they really work very good.
But I would like to buy some of 'mini' models as my OBD2 port is in such place (under steering wheel and just above brake pedal) that big one is too big and my feet is hitting it while driving. Here is obe model I consider

:silly: I do not see the problem there as if you checked both links from my post you would see that I use extension cable that do not have issue with connector position. Mine is located right above gas pedal so I could not drive car normally with any OBD Adapter unless I used extension cable.

PIC is programmed micro controller and not actual ELM327 see https://www.elmelectronics.com/products/ics/obd/ and v1.5 nor v2.1 exist officially as they are clones and you should use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.applagapp.elm327identifier to test actual model and support.
Re which one: I ordered 6 different models and kept two that worked flawlessly with my car 1 was broken (got refund) and resold other 3 to get my money back.

It is fairly simple MOD:
1. Soldered positive wire of lighter connector that have power only when Ignition is turned on.
2. Bought FLAT cable that I can easily cut the wires like in picture s-l1600.jpg
3. Cut Wire on pin 16 BAT power see ODBII%20Master%20Pinout.jpg
4. Connected wire that goes to OBDII to Positive wire I prepared in step 1
5. Connected OBDII to connector from FLAT CABLE
6. Connected USB to HU SINGLE USB CABLE
7. Tested if all works with Toque
8. Used cable ties to secure all cabling behind dashboard
and now I enjoy the all the diags on HU

so I connected it over USB and only thing I've made is HW MOD to get ACC+ instead BAT+ from OBD2 so that it is powered only when Key is turned on.
Resolved pairing issue with no pairing and all works along with BT and WiFi free for other devices.

Thanks for this info, very helpful, just got Android 8 Eonon 2170, and I've been struggling to pair OBD, Kiwi 3 doesn't show (BLE not supported? Don't know), Tomtom unit won't pair, no name unit seems to work, but, I've thought, why not USB, started searching for USB Android supported, luckily came across your post.
To change BATT to ACC, is that just so it's ' done properly'?
Surely battery drain would be miniscule, or not? I guess makes sense to have it not powered all the time.

I just looked into factory settings, there is a CANBUS section, currently set to NONE, should that that altered to car maker's CANBUS ?

It is not the problem that it drains a ot but all small drains can pile up so eventually you have a problem. I have park mode security enabled on my dashcam system so it drains some, OBDII can drain a littl, but it is known that in some cases keeps ECU awake that can drain a lot due teh number of sensors it keeps awake also

All was ECU side due the different pinouts see my pics, I have seen in the past several USB -> COM chips that are not supported on Android due the OEM build and specific drivers like some factory that are not recognized on laptop till you install their licensed software (Usually JUNGO Based Drivers).

Only if you got specific cables with canbus decoder (black little box). even then USB OBDII is used to diagnostic and clear codes. I use Toque 1.83 and it works on one unit that v1.52 didn't worked with. Usually ELM v1.5 works better than v2.1
thanks! I have now got USB OBD unit 1.5 (still need splitter/extender), tried yesterday with Torque as well as with Palmer's DashCommand:
it kinda worked - during first trip, 45min, Torque app crashed twice or more, worked after restart, on return trip, DashCommand also choked once or twice, thenm I relaized, as fuel tank level is not reported, unless I run app 100% of the time, fuel consumption won't be correct - and, realsiticall, I need TomTom on the screen more than gauges....
I see there are OBD spliters that 'allow' two or three OBD devices plugged in, wouldn't you know, is it OK to split/use multiple OBDs ?
like, I have TomTom 'Curfer' OBD data logger - just logs 'quality of driving", thoiught to get splitter to log data, AND, if so desire, call gauges on screen ?

BTW I have MTCE with android 8.0 with KLD MCU.
Torque lite ain't work with android/usb, only in bluetooth mode.
I have torque pro so there is no problem there.
Any way problem solved. Bought Bluetooth version.

Honda, HTC 10. Android Auto turns itself off soon after connecting.

I've given up on the Google Forums, looking for some relief here. Last September we bought a new 2017 Honda CRV. Great car, except...
It worked for several months, now I can't get AA to remain connected at all. I think I have been through everything. I just tried the recommended high quality Belikin 3.1 USB cord, it didn't make any difference. Tried other cords as well. This is so frustrating. One of the main reasons we went with the Honda over the Toyota was the availability of Android Auto. Unfortunately, this has been a real excercise in frustration.
When I start the car (USB not connected at this point), Bluetooth connects and AA automatically starts up on my phone. After a few moments, I plug in the USB cord. On the CRV's home screen the blue Android Auto logo shows in the smartphone field. I tap it and my phone connects to the head. So far so good. However, within a minute Android Auto vanished from my phone's screen and on the car's display I get "Device Not Connected".
Has anyone else had/solved this problem? Any of you using an HTC phone? It's not like the phone disconnects, it seems more like AA on the phone just shuts itself off/crashes within a minute or two of starting, but what do I know? Here is the kicker, the system seems to work fine with my wife's Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, SM-G930V. I just went out for a little drive. The HTC refuses to remain connected, the Samsung did just fine.
Error message: On head, "Device Not Connected". AA on my phone just stops. It's like AA on the phone stops working causing a disconnect from the car. Here is more info about my system.

Developer Options >USB debugging enabled. USB set to MTP and also tried other settings.
Tried changing out HTC cords to no avail. Just purchased new Belikin USB 3.1 cord. It didn't make any difference.
I have done a factory reset on my phone and on the Honda's display unit as well. I uninstalled HTC's Boost+, reset my phone's Bluetooth. I changed the battery settings on my phone to not optimize AA, Waze and Google Maps.
How can I fix this? Is there anyway out of this rabbit hole?
Switch USB debugging off change Bluetooth from 1.4 to 1.6 in the developers settings
Running into the same problem with an after-market Sony head unit (XAV-AX5000) and a Samsung Galaxy S7 (Oreo 8.0). I'll have to give the BT setting a try.

Nope, didn't work. It seems to connect to the phone fine, but then it quickly disconnects, within seconds, or a minute or two. Posting on Honda thread, it doesn't seem to be an across the board problem, I think it's limited to my phone. Having said that on the AA forums there are plenty of complaints about connecting problems. I was hoping against hope that this forum might have a deeper understanding or possible resolutions.

Try turning Dev mode in AA. OPEN app go to About. Click on the title several times.

I'm willing to try anything, I had no idea that setting existed. Sorry to say that it didn't work. Ugh.
