Need help with new Nook - Nook Color General

Ok i got my NC now what? I have a captivate and can root/ flash roms so i hope this is not alot different. I try to read through the forums but damn there is alot of stuff. Most of it is a jumbled mess.
Anyone got a quick list of things i need to do?
Back up original software? How?

Welcome aboard! I would say start here at the Nook Color Portal. Plan to do a lot of reading.

Thanks Homer
I will do some more reading. One question. How does this thing update? I see no way so far on the NC itself

Updates are delivered OTA and also can be done manually from with a DL from the B&N site ... current version is 1.1 and by reading at the NOOKColor Portal you can find how to root from any version.

I clicked the link above and I may have missed it (Found it) but I did not see the root instructions for the latest firmware update. Is there a different thread I should start reading for this?
Note: I've been a nook owner for all of one week and I'm in desperate need of Android knowledge as I'm really digging this thing.

Here's a good link with very clear instructions on rooting:
http://community.saugususd.org/jklein/weblog/1345.html
In the post that follows that one (it's a blog) he covers updating while rooted and also speeding up the CPU.
I had to restore my stock NC to 1.0.1 so that the currently available autonooter would work. Here's a link to a great thread on how to do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
Check your version number on your Nook. I bought mine last week but it still had 1.0.0 -- then I manually upgraded to 1.1.0 prior to rooting, which was a mistake!

If you haven't rooted by now, note that an Auto-Nooter version is out that gets you to v1.1 .. it's here ... read thoroughly tho B4 you go and be aware of the changes you will get with this package.

you can also use the clockwork rooting (CWR) method here from TheCubed and then use the Decad3nce rooted 1.1r2 from here. I think the autonooter is easier, but if you can figure out the CWR then you will also build on the knowledge of fixing your NC if you accidently delete the boot/system partition.

How to get my G1 back on track?

Hey guys,
First of all, thank you for spending time on reading this thread, I really need your help.
I wanted to root my phone (G1) etc. etc. So I downgraded it but didn't like it at all! So I descided to move back up again (latest software version).
I spent hours on the internet searching for software, firmware etc. And I managed to set my phone to RC33 and firmware version 1.1 ... Now my phone is not what it used to be, I guess firmware version 1.1 is kinda old isn't it? Strange enough my phone says it already is fully up to date...
So my question is; could you guys help me out, with getting the latest firmware/software whatever?
Thank you in advance!
Well, what you could do is: Go back to the earliest framework specified in say the cyanogenmod rom, which is RC29. Use that to flash your phone to gain root. It will be very odd looking because it the lowest thing. But then you can flash the awesomness of cyanogen onto it and you'll be good to go.
Also what you said you wanted to root it, so you downgraded. That is but the first step needed. i wouldnt want to stay there either. So yeah follow that guide and you should be on your way.
Although I will admit that it is probably the best running firmware for the G1 thus far!

So in "short" you'd advise me to:
Downgrade to RD29 *again*
Get my phone rooted
And install the cyanogenmod Rom
Is that correct? Now I don't see all the applications on the Android Market, some disappeared, will they return?
In short, yes. I know it seems odd to downgrade to upgrade. But to gain root you have to use RC29. To gain root its not too bad. you have to use RC29 to do it. You just install that. start it up. And then download the app "telnet" from the market. and then run a few commands. from there you can upgrade back up. And yes you should see everything in the market. Yeah its kinda annoying but there are some great results possible.
A more in depth set of instructions is located on the Cyanogen wiki. I cant post a direct link due to my account status but google "how to install cyanogenmod" and its about the 3rd result.
Got stuck...

Okay, so here's what I did. I downgraded my G1 to RC29, rooted it successfully. Downloaded the latest cyanogenmod, named it setup.zip, went to recovery mode, did a factory reset and installed the setup.zip. Now my G1 won't get past the load screen (which says G1). What did I do wrong?? I can get still into recovery mode...
Thanks for the help so far!
So I came up with an idea, I need to add a new update.zip how to connect to the computer through recovery mode??

Noob - How To Root DMD64 G1 ?

I've searched for this information high and low, can you post a link to some good instructions or possibly write your own? I wanna root my new DMD64 G1 I just received.
This is what I could find, but nobody has confirmed anything for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=658399
The best place to start:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
i recently rooted a new g1 for my frien that had the new radio update. go to theunlockr.com and follow the procedure dor rooting a donut phone. it worked for me. just be sure to give yourself some time and patience. after you complete that process check your radio and spl. you may need to update radio then flash spl and rom of your choice.

Thanks for this, please respond and let me know how it goes for you... if it works, etc. I will be attempting to do this as well.
I have also been trying to find info on rooting my g1 with dmd... glad someone posted this.
Info about the update:
http://www.mwd.com/2010/03/t-mobile-released-new-g1-and-mytouch-ota-update-dmd64/
I am not trying it until I get at least one confirmation that it is the best course of action.

How's this any different from any other G1? Downgrade to RC29 and root as usual, isn't it?

That's kind of what I am wondering
Peshal's link worked like a champ. Rooted my G1 yesterday, everything looks and works great.

Do's and Don'ts of rooting?

I'll be rooting tomorrow. Any thing I sure make sure not to do? Any certain apps not to try or stuff that's really successful?
Don't Brick it.
Check the firmware that you have .... if it is 1.4.0 or newer, you need to make sure the root method applies.
I don't have a NC, but want to get one over the Holidays. I was reading this information on NookDevs.com

1.4.0?! I think that's for the Nook, not the NC. NC is only 1.0.0 with MAYBE 1.0.1, but that's not confirmed yet.
I followed the Windows 7 guide on the wiki, I think it's the best "complete" guide available and has more information as well as being updated than some of the other posts. Ultimately, you're going to be doing a lot of reading as I don't think there is a definitive guide on what to do post-root. Such as enable superuser, and how to install apps (adb install (appname.apk)

Thanks for clarifying that...
So the phantom supposed root ruining update is 1.0.1
Does that affect new device root opportunities? I'm trying to get all my gifts in B&N giftcards and want to make sure its not all in vain.

There's only been one report of it so far, so no one's sure about details. 1.0.1 was the reported updated version though.
Yeah we really have no idea, and even if 1.0.1 is real and does unroot, we don't know if it's possible to re-root using a different method.
Honestly, nobody can tell you one way or the other. Risk it, and hope the next release gets rooted (as most usually are) or get something more generic, like bestbuy certificates and buy it from there instead.
That way, if it is made un-rootable, you can still get something besides books.

As far as I can tell, the worst that BN can do is make the stock firmware really unpleasant to root. We should always be able to boot into our own custom fw from SD.

It will be trivial to re-root an "upgraded" device. Trivial != legal though.
Trivial == taking a dd image from a rooted 1.0.0 device and applying it to a device that has 1.0.0+ (B&N's attempt to stop rooting).
In less that 10 mins, I can take the nooter image that folks are using to root 1.0.0 devices and turn it into a "flash back to 1.0.0 + rooted" image. It's going to go from 40M to ~5G though since I would need to have a dd image of an already rooted device included.
It's as simple as overwriting the partitions that hold the OS with an image that has root enabled.
The problem here is that there are portions of the image that are NOT GPL but are proprietary B&N software. That makes this very doable but also very illegal which is why the original rooters didn't just distribute an image that would turn your phone into a completely rooted device with all kinds of nifty apps installed, tuned and tweaked for you. Its all about not going to jail ya know!

Thanks to Decad3nce

Since I do not have enough post's to leave a thanks in the Dev forum. I want to thank Decad3nce for the 1.1 update zip. Worked just like a kernel update. All apps continue to work and root was maintained. I will push a real thanks once I get the post number up.

I can't thank the guy enough. He made it infinitely easier to get the B&N update.
I've been waiting for this update as well as it fixes my Wifi sleep reboot issues. I can now actually listen to Pandora with the screen off. OMG!
Buying this device was like buying my G1. I was happy with the package that I received on purchase day, but as my happiness grew tired, new updates and fixes made it more enjoyable everyday. (There was no BT audio or virtual keyboard in Android 1.0)
sounds like it was a piece of cake to set up as well.
hopefully he sticks around as we need all the help we can get around here
thanks again!!
Same here. Flashed his update over my auto nootered 1.0.1 nook. And everything is exactly how it was. No issues with su root permissions or anything. And like first poster i don't have enough post to say thanks in the dev forum. So ill say it here.

100% Agree on the Thanks! Updated mine in no time and had no issues at all!! Thanks!!
Now I need to make some posts so I can actually thank the people in Devs!
Wow! Nice. I was worried if it will mess up my auto nootered 1.0.1. I am going to all his update zip via CWR.
And that was my 10th post. Yay!
I haven't seen an answer to this question. Hope it's OK to ask here.
I followed instructions to block the 1.1.0 OTA update by editing the build.prop file, and everything still works right on my auotnootered 1.0.1. Do I need to" unmodify" build.prop before using Decad3nce's pre-rooted 1.1.0 ROM?
Also I saw some weird behavior after installing Rom Manager and Titanium Backup: my NookColor Tools app stopped working, so I uninstalled both, and the tools app worked properly again. Is there a workaround for this?
Thanks in advance. Great forum - i'm getting a lot more enjoyment out of my rooted NC and I have all you experts to thank.

I agree 100% with all of the posts that give this thanks. It worked well for me also.
Am I the only one getting an B&N authorization problem. It gives me a message saying that there has been an authorization problem and must reset. Resets back into 1.01. Happens a few minutes after the reboot into 1.1 ROM.
Good thing I have backups, so that's not a problem. I guess I can wait for a new Auto-nooter. Anyone have ideas?

Thanks for your comment. I completed the process within about 10 minutes this morning, and everything seems to be working perfectly. No problems or hiccups whatsoever.
Thanks, vinal and another BIG thanks to Decad3nce. Awesome work.
Problem with ADB
I was doing fine with the autonooter 1.01. Used Decadence's 1.10r2 and now can't install SlideIT and can't ADB into the nook.
I have double-checked that USB debugging is enabled.
I have reinstalled the ROM
I have taken off security, thinking that might have impacted it (didn't help)
I have tried using Astro and ES file managers to copy and paste SlideIT from the \sdcard\downloads to \system\apps\ --that didn't work because \system\apps is read only.
Slide it is in my app drawer, but doesn't show up in my list of available keyboards.
Similar problem with SwiftKey. and KeyPurr. With Slide It, I've tried to install the market trial app, and I've also gone the the developers website and downloaded the 15 day trial which (I believe) is the full app only good for 15 days.
Titanium, superuser, and softkeys are working.
Since I can't access the nook with ADB (btw, I'm using Linux), I'm thinking it's a permissions problem in the ROM.
Any suggestions?
I am also a happy customer. Was running 1.0.1 and installed Decad3nce's 1.1.0 R2 and every thing worked great except Wifi reconnecting after sleep.

First Attempt at Modding my Samsung Captivate…..

I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
At the start DEFINITE GUIDE TO BRICKING, LOL.
Its just a joke be sure you read it all.

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062
thanks for clarying.
just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

I would use SuperOneClick to root 2.2, however, the only version that was successful for me was version 1.6.5. The newer versions gave me errors or said FAILED when trying to root. For me, it has always worked with 1.6.5

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.
