[Q] Overclocking Rogers Dream - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I'm fairly new to this, but I've already rooted my Rogers Dream and updated to the latest Froyo 2.2 Rom by Cyonogen. I was hoping that someone could lead me in the right direction to overclocking it, if at all possible. I've used the search and found some information, but it seems to be for older roms, or they don't mention rogers dreams, which I assume are a little different.
Simple link to the proper thread where I can find the info, and I'm sure I could figure it out. Thanks!

2.2 Question

Hi this is probably a really stupid question but I am new and don't really know what I'm doing lol. I was wondering if there was an easy way to upgrade my sprint hero to 2.2. Google offers the official stock android but I don't know how to install it and I can't figure out the search here. Can someone lead me in the right direction? Maybe link to the right thread? Thanks for the help

Here is a good place to start for general questions and answers:

One thing is for sure your going to have to root your phone before you can do anything so here's the rooting guide for 2.1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
The official source code for 2.2 doesn't just install on our phone everything has to be packaged in a rom and if its not supported by htc we have to do it ourselves so if you look around in the forums you'll find a lot of good 2.1 custom roms and darchstar built a 2.2 froyo build from the ground up. Good luck.
What is darchstar's 2.2 rom called
Just wanted to double check, newbie here but willing to learn. You have to get to your phone into a root statues, at which point your going to flash a new rom onto it with either 2.1 or 2.2?

that is correct
its not too hard once you finally get set-up
i suggest trying out a basic rom without all the bells and whistles first
then once you realize you can load a rom and you mess with it for a bit, try flashing a new kernal, try using overclock, try out a new launcher even *adw or helix.....*, then if you're still feeling good you can try jit
by then you should understand a bit more.

[Q] cognition on captivate

I just rooted my captivate yesterday and flashed the latest rom from Cognition. I was looking a post or forum where we can discuess the rom and its features/benefits but i couldnt find one. Hopefully someone can guide to me the right place or we maybe able to start it here. I had some general questions about the rom about apps to sd, tethering, kernels, overclocking, etc. if anyone has some knowledge about these tweaks or has any helpful hints/tips, please share it here. My first android phone was the g1 which i rooted and flashed cyanogenmod and it was much easier back then. although, rooting the captivate wasnt hard, there seems to be much more options/tweaks that can be applied and the methods of applying them vary based on how you rooted the phone and what rom you use. it just seems much more complicted. i used the one click root, un-root method by tga-gunnman and then flashed the lastest congniton rom. but there seems to be another root method by odin. can someone please tell me what i can and cannot do and what would you recommend i do next. thanks in advance, joe
So you got the latest Cognition ROM from [ROM]Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.3 (Voodoo - CogKernel - Bootanimation) *10/29/2010* but you can't find a thread to discuss it?

LOL!!! The thread only has 7209 posts atm, and a large number of posts were deleted at one point.
All discussions about roms are done in the their threads.
I deem this thread closed

Best XDA Custom Rom???

I did a search per the forum rules prior to his post. So, I apologize in advance if this is a repeated post. Q: Where can I find the latest custom rom for captivate? I recently upgraded to the official Froyo 2.2 via Kies Mini and I am very disappointed with the outcome. I never knew what I had until I jump ship. If someone can steer me in the right direction, your time and consideration will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
If by latest you mean Android version wise. Alot of the ROMs use 2.2.1 (paragon, serendipity, etc.) Most the ROM pages tell you what version they are running and what its based off of. If you want something that's based off Captivate 2.2 then your going to have to use Cog 4.1. Just need to look.
"best" is so subjective...
It depends on user preference.
There are many good, stable ROMs available for this device. Your task is to try them out and find out which is "best" for you.

You can find the ROM's in the Captivate Android Development section. As far as which one is best? Well that is a question only you can answer. Each ROM/Kernel/Modem could work a little bit differently on your device than it will on mine or anyone else's. So as to which one's best? Flash it, run it for a while, if it isn't to your liking; try another. That is how most of us find one that we love.
If you haven't flashed a custom before, do a lot of research. Know what you are doing before you jump in. If you run into any problems you'll have an idea how to fix it. Read the threads(It can be a bit overwhelming) MOST of your answers will be there. Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Good Luck and have fun.
By the way; did anyone tell you it's completely addicting?
'Best ROM'
I found that the 'Best' ROM is usually the one I'm currently on. Which has been, in no particular order: Cognition 2bx, Cognition 4, Perception 10.4 and Paragon 5.1. Each one is a bit different and takes time to play with them to understand exactly what is different.
Main thing is to educate yourself, so you can support yourself if things go haywire.
Have fun!
My favorite so far has been Cognition 3.04 but I about to try 4.1 with Launcher Pro. The Cognitions I have tried are really stable and not too much fancy stuff.
Have decided to go with Cognition 4.1 rom, correct me if I am wrong. I read somewhere that one would need Cognition 4.0 first and update to 4.1. If this is the case, can someone drop the link. Thanks.
In my own opinion I would say Serendipity or Firefly...but then again its a personal preference.
As stated in Replies there is no best rom just a best for you rom. Try them and find the one you like best.

Welcome!~ Let me tell you it'll get frustrating at first, but if you have patience and are willing to put in some time to learn things you will no doubt be amazed at what you can do.
I had a similar issue a while back and I started a thread, which blew up with information, so I suggest you look through there as it has useful tips from some really great members about what you're looking for. I see you're looking to upgrade from 2.3.3. The latest in my thread is version 2.3.6 and that one is great. Try that out first and when you're ready I suggest moving onto Cyanogenmod 7.1 as it's based on the latest Gingerbread build 2.3.7
Good luck! Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375971
this thread is useful i reckon. good luck.

Thanks,
Does my phone have to be unlocked? It if so the only way to unlock that I've seen is to use another sim card.
No, your phone does not need to be unlocked.
I'm currently running the JW1 (2.3.6) ROM that was released at the end of January with the Bell phone and modem files.
See post #9 in the thread pk1025 linked to.
It discusses and visually displays how to take pieces of different ROMs and install them on a Bell GT-i9000m phone.
It talks about installing JVT, but the same thing applies if you wish to install JW1 or the JVU value pack version discussed here.
Thanks alot the process is making alot more sense.
What's the most current stable version of 2.3.6. and where do I get it from?

[Q] Rooting or Flashing 2.3.3

Hello,
I would like to try flashing my rogers captivate to ICS. Nothing fancy just a astable bug free ICS. However I am on 2.3.3. I updated through KIES a while back and now I have no idea how to root my phone or install roms. I am afraid the last time I looked into this everything was very different. I have read the forums but am still a little anxious.
Is it possible to root and then install CWM or something to install roms from my current 2.3.3 version? If so how may I do it?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Christopher
By reading all the stickies and reading some more info, you will be a genius at this stuff by the time you're done...
Yeah thats what I am kinda trying to avoid. I have to hack and read so much already it gets really tiring having to keep up with it all. Add to this work and school and its like info overload. I was hoping there might be an easier way than earning another mini phone phD. Thus far I have determined I have to change my kernel... I think? My phone is unrooted. Stock 2.1 to 2.3.3 KIES.
This Site is mentioned for developing. That being said for the rest of us, we are supposed to learn. The reason it's important to read and understand is you can potentially kill your phone.
