I've recently moved over from Acer's Liquid E phone to the Samsung Captivate. Nice upgrade, however; the stock app News and Weather is not available on the stock Rogers Rom or the Cognition 4.3 Rom that I have now installed.
I have tried several different apk's, but to no avail. They install, but i get FC's as soon as i try to add the widget to my homescreen.
Does anyone have a solution to to this problem, such as a working apk?
Thanks
EDIT: News and Weather widget also known as Genie widget

Thanks for the quick reply. How do I 'grab' it? Do I need to extract it from the rom?

You can't install it, you have to place it in the /system/app folder in the new rom (on your phone, replacing the one that doesn't work)
Use root explorer to place it.
Then restart your phone.

Oh so nice! I used Super Manager from the market to move the file from my sd card to the /system/app folder. Super manager was a little quirky to get root permission, but it worked after force closing.
I didn't even have to reboot!
Thanks for your help everyone.
Now I can keep track of each little article about the playoffs -
Boo yaa!
Best news customizable news app that ive found.
Now, how do I mark the thread as solved?
I moved over from the Acer Liquid E as well. While the Captivate is faster, it runs out of RAM faster since the Acer had the full 512mb available to the user and the Captivate only allows about 340mb.
Otherwise the Captivate is an upgrade in every other aspects!

Hi, do you know a way to remap "rosie customization button" ?
Actually I do not need any shortcut to customize the style and I would like to replace this dock button by another action such as starting a custom app.
Is there any APK for it ?
Thanks
Nico
There already is a thread about this and fortunately also a solution. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887208
You need the LaunchKey app from the market, which will start any application you want.
Afterwards just flash the attached zip file (Rosie-signed.zip).
If it doesn't work for some reason you can also push Rosie.apk to /system/app/
The button will now launch the app you selected in LaunchKey.

After you installed LaunchKey, just push the attached APK to /system/app/ and overwrite the original Rosie. (no time to make a flashable zip right now, sorry, if you need one tell me and I'll create one later)
The button will now launch the app you selected in LaunchKey.

yep, I'm really interested on it, so if you can spend some time on it, it would be great !

Nevermind, I actually had a bit more time than I thought, so I created the zip.
I updated the post so the steps are like this now:
1.) Install LaunchKey
2.) Set LaunchKey to launch the desired app
3.) Boot into recovery and flash zip
4.) Reboot & enjoy

Thank you, it seems to work, as I can see a small star on the right button... BUT... what should I do if I want to use it with my Sense 3.0 ?
Actually I'm using the "[ROM][Jul 04][ACE] Virtuous Unity 1.27.0 Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid" and I would like to keep this ROM...
thanks

Ah sorry, I didn't know you were on Unity.
Could you post your Rosie.apk here? I'll look into it and then we will see.

Ty so much. Finaly someone created rosie remap that look like original with just button that actually do something useful.
(Core have one also, more colorful than I like but it is good one).
I never understand why ppl care more about shiny transparent black or white things than a real functionality. But, c'est la vie.
One thing it is not to much.
Can u also make (if u have time) app drawer 5x5 or 5x4. I can live without that but I also used to it using core mod Rosie Remap.
Ty again,

I know, I try it and it has ugly shadow over rosie.
I follow all rosie remaps from first thread (link is above in this thread) and believe me this is best one for 2.1 Rosie (if u like stock look)
and also CoreMod (if u like shiny colorful stuff with many combinations of drawer and transparency mode).
I must admit I never found Rosie 3.0 remap that is one reason I never try Unity rom.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could explain to this noob (me) how to mod the dockbar layout of stock twlauncher? Currently running UCKK4 (KK2 kernel by corn)....? I've tried using tw4, which is very cool, but found its stability to be inconsistent on my cappy. Mainly i would like to 1 or 2 small details re: the stock dockbar... 1. Replace "email" button with "gmail" 2. Add "messaging" icon to dockbar (having 5 icons instead of 4, and actually like the look of app drawer icon on right side)
Also, was wondering if anyone has working mods for KK4 extended power menu & modded batt icon with 9 toggle? Tried flashing ones i had but wound up having to reflash stock.
Any help, pointers, tips, etc are greatly appreciated. Also, my apologies if I've posted this is the incorrect area.
Thx, tjp419

You can find some TWLauncher mods here. You ll have to port it. The source is available there. I suppose someone might have already ported theme to the Captivate.
thanks for the that link! ok, so have to ask, can you explain what it means to "port"? still a noob, lol, sorry
yahh, don't start with ports, being a noob, start with small easy stuff.

Hmm porting means editing the APK so as to make t work on a particular device. You need to know some Java, smali/baksmali for it. You need to decompile the APK, using a utility lke APKTool/APKManager and make edits to the touchwiz code to make those mods for the captivate.
For the request #1, you don't need mod.
Simply do the following
1. on the app drawer (hit applications)
2. hit menu -> choose "view type" -> select "Customizable grid"
3. hit menu -> choose "edit", then you can drag and move around icons.

The easiest way to get that would be to flash a KK4-based ROM with that already baked in. Illuminance comes to mind because it's one that I used most recently that had it, but I know there are other ROMs that fit the bill as well. Just do your homework first so you don't end up in an unhappy place

OMG, you are my hero! This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out... figures it would it would be an easy fix and right under my nose... though, i would still like to learn how to mod & theme apps in general, not just touchwiz, think it would be fun...
On a different note, have a new question/issue... my contacts keep reverting back even after i edit them (add #, or email, or address, etc); randomly, some contactf will go completely missing; also, in the notification bar, i get a message that says "sync error, too many deletes." In settings, under accounts & sync, i have it marked to sync google & facebook contacts. And lastly, curious if anyone else has had these same issues..?. If so, hpe do i fix this?
Again, any help is appreciated.
Thx, tjp

I would like this also. I found a thread for the Galaxy Nexus where someone was able to port several TW apps to work with AOSP but when I install them they are not formatted for our resolution. Maybe someone will be able to port those from
this thread.

Stock ICS clock is bad, no Stop Watch
There is a stopwatch, but it is pretty poor compared to the Samsung one.
Inside the clock app, where you set the alarm, there is a sort of a title/tab on top-left that says "Alarms". If you click that, you'll be able to go to a stopwatch. Alternatively, you can go there through the menu button. I am on Doc's V4 and haven't tried other ICS roms, so YMMV.
What I don't like about that stopwatch is two things: It does not use a fixed width font, so the numbers keep "shaking". And it does not keep the phone from going to sleep, which pretty much makes it unusable to me.
So, a big +1 to the OP request.
TW clock is ready
Search for Nexus TW Clock ICS. The only problem I have with it - font and buttons are too big. SOmewhere there is a scale - lcd density or something which is wrong.
There is one for Epic 4G - with perfect size and it does everything - World time, timer, stopwatch, but not alarm! Alarm FC'es.
WTF!
Mystery of apktool
I tried combining these two from Epic and Nexus using apktool and baksmali. The code is almost identical - only one class differs and it's Alarm related. The resources are vastly different in picture sizes and xml's with "dip" in Epic vs "pix" in Nexus. So anyway - I copied Nexus class to Epic, and copied Epic resources to Nexus. None of these two after smaling and apktool build (without errors) got recognised in Launcher - no icons in app drawer, no .odex file in dalvik.
Any experts to solve the mystery?
Mystery is solved
New release is coming... Check out my ROM within couple of hours.
Just copied classes.dex from Nexus ICS clock to Epic 4G clock. And optimized it as usual.
I am patiently waiting for that update, but in the meantime just wanted to say "thank you" for the pointer to the epic clock.

Try the ROM or rip the Clockpackage.apk from .zip.
I'm fine either way.
I'm checking Holo Calendar now. First try was disastrous - I had to wipe the data to restore calendar sync.

I pulled the clockpackage.apk from your rom. I copied to the system/app and rebooted. It didn't show up in my app drawer. So I rebooted into recovery and wiped cach partition, dalvik and fixed permissions. It still isn't showing up in my app drawer. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm running ICSSGS latest version.
Edit: Never mind. When I went into All Applications it was disabled. When I enabled it, it is working now.
Smart Alarm Problem
Thank you so much for updating the clock in Nostalgia!
I can't get the smart alarm function to work, though. No matter which smart alarm tone I choose, the "Good Morning" alarm sound plays. Am I missing something, or is there a glitch in the apk?
Thank you!
I installed the app for now, and it works great.
I am thinking about trying out your ROM, though, once 5.3 is out.

I am having the same issue as you were. I followed steps you mention (I copied to the system/app, rebooted into recovery and wiped cache partition, dalvik and fixed permissions).
When I go to settings/apps/all I do not see it there and so I can't enable it as you did. Am I missing something? What is the app named (maybe I missed it)?
I double checked the system/app folder and it is there.

I had a similar problem until I found another thread with a solution. The solution was to add clockpackage.odex to system/app. I can't upload odex files, so it is attached in a .zip.
When you copy apk to /system/app - your permission on apk file get screwed up. Nice touch from FileManager writers. So you gotta fix them from the same Root Explorer or Browser to be 644 - read/write by owner, read by group, read by other.

You should try search and if you did you would find:
SplannerWidget
You will have to be rooted at least with a custom kernel that has cwm or twrp. Lots of information on how to do that available, just use "search" and you will find it...
thanks for the link

if you take your time, do some reading, explore the vast amount of information here, do searches for things like kernels, tutorials, root and that sort of thing and you will do fine... and don't be scared of the thanks button :good: LOL...
You just need to be rooted, you don't even need a custom kernel. A root browser app will do the trick, download the zip file provided by bob, open it and extract the apk inside system\app folder. Move it to your phone's system\app folder and set permissions rw-r--r-- :good:
